Open Thread (with Lots of Content) & GAINZZZ Thread

I figure the thing that's best here is the Making of Red Dawn (the original) featurette, also embedded below, but linked here in case you can't see it below.

Other stuff:

She seems nice.

In Australia, there's a controversy over the Australian Football League putting out a statement that it, as a corporation, supports same sex marriage. The question is, as it is here: Who the hell are these people to tell ticket-buying fans what they ought to think about a political issue?

Shock: CNN is barely covering the Menendez trial on the actual channel (though there is some scattered coverage on its doesn't-even-matter website), and the networks have almost entirely suppressed the story.

Why aren't the media and other leftist propaganda organs actually covering Valerie Plame's antisemitism? They covered the shit out of, say, Steve Bannon's alleged antisemitism, but for some reason have decided that the proven and longstanding antisemitism of a former CIA officer making decisions about Middle East policy, and influencing US opinion, just aren't worth much exploration, for some reason.

Here's the second-most obvious answer, apart from simple tribal allegiance and partisan bias: Because antisemitism has been thoroughly mainstreamed on the political left, far more that it has been on the right.

Go figure: Leftists decree that having a child is the worst possible decision you could make, both for yourself and The Planet.

Amusingly, here's the related story this bullshit site suggests you might also be interested in:

More: Why Greece needs to start having babies again soon or face financial oblivion

But ignore that. For the Anti-Human Left, the Human Voluntary Self-Extinction Project outweighs all other concerns.

They really are Agent Smith -- they really do want an end to the human race.

I meant to link this earlier, but John Sexton has written it up for us: Leaked emails show the full madness at Evergreen State College, with lots of professors complaining they are being threatened, harassed, and stalked by "Social Justice" Warriors. All of whom were permitted to take over the campus, vigilante style, by the administration, with cops ordered to stand down.

And then crazed lunatics had a free hand to impose their own weird "justice" on the Filthy Normals.

Oh, and speaking of college madness, you might enjoy Hilary Clinton Absolver James Comey being disrupted at a (planned) college address for 16 minutes.

Oh, and Jimmy Kimmel, who cheerled John McCain in his latest betrayal and lies, of course got coached up on his Obamacare talking points by Chuck Schumer.

Below, that Red Dawn making-of featurette, and then a short GAINZZZ entry.

What Have You Done to Make the World a GAINZZZier Place Today?

On my front, I've been getting wiped out by too few rest days. Plus, trying to run a low-carb caloric deficit (I think; I don't count calories) while doing so.

So I've started eating more, and eating some carbs, hoping that I'll at least have the energy to do the workouts I'm trying to do.

I don't know if that'll work. I should start taking more Glutamine (which supposedly aids recovery), but I haven't started that yet.

On the GAINZZZ front, eating more, and eating more carbs, has resulted in... well, I do have lifting GAINZZZ, but I'm also putting on fat-weight too. Not a lot, but I'm not seeing any LOZEZZZ.

I've repeatedly read (or heard) it's impossible to try to both gain and lose weight at the same time -- which I realize looks pretty obvious -- and that you have to choose one or the other, and I think I'm finding out that's about right.

I might have to try something like "eat more six days a week, but then fast one day." That's what I'm doing today.

Coincidentally -- I forgot about this guy until today -- this guy suggests doing something like that, which he calls the "Snake Diet" (because you eat a lot, then you don't eat for days) and recommends drinking an electrolyte-rich drink he calls "Snake Juice." Basically, he suggests One Meal a Day plus the weekly 48 hour fast, or some fuckin' shit like that.

He begins every video with the greeting, "HEY FATTIE!," I guess as a motivational tool, which.. well, it kinda works, I guess. Starting off a video "HEY FATTIE!!!" really doesn't sugar-coat it much.

Now, to be honest, I'm not sure that I trust this guy's advice -- though I've done a lot of the stuff he suggests -- but I do find him amusing:

I found this guy when I was searching for the right proportions of electrolytes to water, after my own bouts of deydration.

i'm not endorsing this at all. Just saying, hey, he's... well, he's different, that's for sure.

If you want to know his recipe for an electroylte-replenishing concoction, well then, HEY FATTIE!!!, here's his fuckin' recipe for Snake Fuckin' Juice.

Here's a fuckin' testimonial by a FATTIE who failed his FUCKIN' SNAKE DIET because her fuckin' hormones were ALL FUCKED UP AND SHIT!!!

If you want to yelled at some fuckin' more, here:

By the way, I really, really, really would caution anyone from following his advice on dry fasting -- that is, fasting and also not drinking water.

You need more water when you fast, not less.

I like the idea of his Only Eat Bacon For 30 Days Challenge (and only eat it in that one meal a day 2 hour eating window), and I might try a bacon and eggs only sort of one meal a day challenge, but not dry, as he suggests.

I collapsed from dehydration, and had bad dehydration effects (averted from drinking a lot of water) another time. I'd really go nowhere near the dry fast.

27 Oh cool, I've been saving some gainzz advice for a gainzz thread where ace hadn't almost killed himself lately.

There are two insights that came together for this.

1) I now weigh myself first thing upon waking and evacuating, as I find that I lose about 3 pounds in my sleep. So, sleep is good for weight loss.

B) I was fishing in the tailwater of a bottom-release dam recently. If water spills over the top of a dam it's warmed by the sun and is only good for growing useless fish like bass and crappie. It it's bottom release, you get consistent cold clear trout water year-round.

Yay.

So I was standing in my nice cold trout water until I was tying knots by sight and memory because I couldn't feel my fingers any more and it hit me:

Calories are by definition a measure of heat. So, exposure to icy trout water must consume calories as it sucks out heat.

Ergo: Ace should sleep in a sensory-deprivation ice-water bath.

Massive gainzz and the risk of near death experiences. What could be more ewokian?

50 Or here's a bit of wisdom from Dr. John Beradi, 'Precision Nutrition'....

'I know, everyone wants to talk about the food itself
- the proteins, carbs, and fats. What to eat more of and what to avoid.

But research is now showing that simply paying better attention to what you eat is a key factor in whether you'll lose fat, get lean, and improve your health.

Whether your attention is trained on avoiding carbs, eating more vegetables, seeking out organic / free-range food, avoiding animal foods, or avoiding "non Paleo" food, it's all good.

Because what you focus on may not matter as much as simply caring more about what you're eating in the first place."

No, they don't have that much time and also, kids are expensive to the State.

The average costs of school per student I'm sure exceeds the average yearly pension. And then there's the medical care, welfare, food stamps, etc if they are poor.

It gives me a boost until my day is done. Right now the plan is Monday and Thursday is bench and rows, Tuesday and Friday are squats and overhead presses, and Wednesday is for deadlifts and intervals on the tredmill. Also, I can go on Thursday nights to an evening swing dancing class, and on Wednesday nights to tango classes.

96 The Ponzi scheme depends on more people at the bottom paying in to funnel to people at the top. The problem is the more that base gets squeezed it becomes less financially feasible for them to add to that base through reproduction. Also, as the government continues to strangle the economy, those people at the base don't have anything to pay up to the people at the top, and in fact start having to drain some off from the people at the top. At that point your pyramid is falling apart.

114 I haz some gainz! I did a 14 day ab challenge which included a 24 minute HIIT workout in conjunction with a proprietary "Ab Blaster" workout that you did every day Mon-Fri, then just a run, walk or whatever workout you usually do on the weekend. I still ran on some of the weekdays because I'm training for a marathon in Oct. I didn't do any before measurements because I really didn't think you could change your body much in just 2 weeks. My main goal was to just get some core strength to help me improve my running form. I didn't even do the nutrition part because I wasn't trying to los weight. Well, I lost 4 lbs. and inches everywhere! Lost my little muffin too and my love handles, and my stomach is flat! I did my last long run last Saturday. I maintained not only my form but my foot turnover on a 23.1 mile run! (Which I ran at an average pace of 8:59 minutes/mike. These HITT workouts are legit! It was not a PR for me on that course (but I'm years older than when I ran my fastest time there). It was the best I felt ever doing that run, and I felt fine the next day. (Apple cider vinegar helps too). I smoked hubby (which is always fun, AND I felt great! I'm a believer in HIIT now! I believe!

There's a huge genetic factor in what kind of diet is best for individuals . . .

My wife is of (largely) southern European heritage; she can eat carbs all day long and not gain weight.

If I (mainly northern European) would eat the way she eats, I would guraranteed gain weight . . . LOTS of weight. I can't tolerate too many carbs. She can.

All diets are not equal, because all people are not equal.

Advocating moderation without recognizing the individual, genetic element is, to be blunt, an evil, cruel lie.

Find out what your body reacts to, positively and negatively, and eat accordingly.

There isn't One True Diet That All Should Follow. More's the pity.

No, it's not. It really isn't. There may be some minor variation, but generally people all need the same nutrients, and do NOT need the crap that everyone knows is crap.

The truth is, nobody really knows what anyone else eats. We think there are people who can eat all the [fill in the blank] they want, and be healthy as a horse.

They don't eat as much as people think they do.

Anybody consuming 3000 calories a day (assuming they are not world class athletes), with a large percentage of them being carbs, is going to be big as a house.

This was about the time we joined the Y. I mostly walked on the treadmill until one of the instructors there suggested that light exercise on the machines that work the arms and shoulders might help.

I decided to give it a try as I did not want surgery. For about the first month or so, I couldn't even grab the grips. By spring, I was using the equipment like a normal person and putting on my own coat. You'd be surprised how good it feels to be able to put on your own dang coat.

"Moderation" varies widely depending on genetics. Carb tolerance varies widely depending on genetics (and to some extent on previous life history).

"Moderation" means wildly different things to different people. Some people can tolerate 200 g carbs, some 20. What level of carb consumption then is "moderate"? Answer: It depends on the individual.

That was a good one. Barney and the others were in the barber shop, watching her -- she was a manicurist, I think -- and they were just babbling with no idea what they were saying.

242 There absolutely is.

Eat a bit less than you do now, do a bit more aerobic exercise than you do now. Slowly increment until you start shedding some weight.

Don't expect to lose years of weight gain by temporarily changing habits. Build new habits and maintain them permanently.

Nope (in part).

There are studies showing that increasing exercise doesn't necessarily result in weight loss . . . in fact in certain individuals it will result in an increase in caloric consumption.

But yes, the only long-term way is to (after finding out what you can and can't tolerate, food-wise) to re-build your life habits to conform to what your body can tolerate.

This is an incredibly hard thing to actually do.

There are essential fatty acids and amino acids, which means fat and protein (that contain those constituents) are required.

There is no such thing as essential carbs. You can live off fat and protein (but not too much of the latter). You'll go into ketosis, of course, but you can live without any carbs.

Now, plants have fats and proteins into them as well, of course, but you've got to get the essential fatty acids and amino acids.

And that's where "balance" comes in. The proteins and fats in some foods don't have all the essential ones in them.

i hear ya, but the pangs do pass. Right now (at about hour 24 of a fast) I'm hungry from time to time. In my experience it does not interfere with sleep, though.

What I found was that I had gotten used to using late night eating as a way to help fall asleep (cheese tended to make me sleepy), and stopping that habit did make me have trouble sleeping, just because i'd made it a habit.

But once that habit was kicked, fasting didn't interfere with sleep.

Even thin people are carrying 30,000 spare calories on their frames. Fat people are carrying 100,000 or 200,000. Very fat people carry 500,000.

It's not like people do not have the energy stored on their bodies. And the body will start burning it, eventually.

326 >>>
The fast plan I heard our friend Kimmel used to lose his weight allowed for up to 500 calories consumed on the fast days. I forgot the plan name. Heard him a awhile back on Stern.

a lot of plans are like that. This is called the "fasting-simulating diet." The idea is that if you have a low enough number of calories on "fasting" days, 600 for men, 500 for women, you're effectively fasting (though not actually fasting).

many of the fasting plans -- like Fast Five (fast for five days), 5:2 (eat for five days, fast for 2) or alternate day fasting permit that kind of low level of calorie intake on "fasting" days.

i've done that sort of thing as well as genuine fasts. Some will find that, as Lewis Sinclair said, eating small amounts of food will stimulate the appetite rather than satisfying it, so that the real honest fast turns out easier.

For me it's six of one half a dozen of the other. I do think that maybe the Bone Broth fast is a good idea, just to make sure you're getting some electrolytes in your body (which you shed when you fast or lose weight due to any means).

older doctors still believe this, younger doctors do not.

what many of you keep pushing forward as "the settled science" is in a period of rapid rejection by the medical community. If your doctor is 60 or older, he still probably pushes this snake oil. If he's 45 or younger, he probably doesn't.

a lot of people think the stuff I talk about is weird. But I have younger doctors, one who is explicitly keto/paleo and one who isn't explicit about that, but he seems cool with my choices.

The things some people think are "radical new ideas" are in fact rapidly becoming the mainstream, bog-standard sort of advice.

There has been a longstanding debate on this since the mid 2000s, and the Calories In Calories Out model is losing, and in fact is coming to the point where we can say "has lost."

Having kids sounds awful in the modern Western world where endless fun is out there if you live in the right place. I'm in rural America where nobody has anything to do so they still have kids, but meh. What am I gonna do, have some kid and try to teach it to fish, or share great art with him, when all he wants to do is play Minecraft or some other nonsense kids waste their time on these days? God it's a miracle anyone bothers anymore. 405 Cal in/out doesn't really govern whether those calories are converted to stored fat or not.

It's like saying that a given car will always get the same mileage if driven the same way, and that all cars that are roughly comparable and capable of the same or even similar mileage will get the same mileage driven the same way on the same drive.

Anyone who knows the first thing about automobiles will recognize this as horseshit, and that's without autos being as able to regulate their own usage of fuels and power output as the human body. Hell, a car has to stay close to a really tight lambda per amount of air ingested to even run, and that amount of air ingested is pretty damn similar on a similar drive driven similarly. But no. Simply not the case.

Now assume that the fuel system can run on gas, kerosene, whiskey, thinner, leaded avgas, coconut oil, even butter. Joules are are joules out, right?

Well, no. That assumption assumes that the hypothetical car, or rather, human body is actually magic. That is a very dumb assumption.

How much of the "calories in" is being excreted unused rather than being digested and used by the body?

Go take your "lack of willpower" and stick it. "Willpower" has very little to do with obesity, because the hormonal urges will easily overpower someone's will. Trust me. I've felt it happen to me. Right, right, right. And if your carbueretor is faulty, and doesn't burn gasoline properly, then that car will, per the law of thermodyamics, pump out the same amount of energy as a well-functioning engine? Right...?

You don't know anything. When someone eats, the body can use that energy for three things: Moving the body around, *slightly increasing core body temperature* (which really burns up a lot of energy-- maintaining basic core body functions uses 10x as much energy as even a hard workout), or storing it as fat.

What does the Law of Thermodynamics dictate that a body do with the energy, bub?

Oh that's right -- it doesn't say a damn thing about it. Whether you fritter away calories with fidgeting and puttering, or your body just gooses your core temperature by 0.1 degree F, or if it puts it all into fat -- the Law of Thermodynamics is followed.

But the first two will result in maintaing the same weight, and the last will result in weight gain.

And which the body does is not dictated by the law of thermodynamics but one's hormonal response to food.

People who are ignorant like to simplify things down to their low level of understanding.

If the energy consumed by the body exceeds the energy introduced over a long period of time you will lose weight.

You're focusing on short term effects, I'm talking long-term. As long as your body is healthy, it cannot keep storing energy while maintaining an energy deficit. Homeostasis won't allow you to drop your core temperature 5 degrees over a year in favor of consuming fat reserves.

452 I never talked about calories, I spoke in terms of energy.

Which is the same thing.

453 >> I never talked about calories, I spoke in terms

I'm sure you know that a calorie is a unit of energy, most commonly used in dietary things. What are commonly called "calories" is in fact the kilocalorie, which is defined as the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kilgram of water by one degree Celsius (at one standard atmosphere pressure).

454 on that cold thing, just drinking cold water requires the body to burn calories to warm it up.

I used to do a thing called 'tempering'. I was overseas on a warehouse job. Bone-chilling, damp cold. At the end of my shower, I would turn off the hot water and stay under as long as I could take it. (These guys had some seriously cold water!) Thirty seconds may have been my record.

Anywho, for the next six hours or so, I was warm as could be. Metabolism was thru the roof. A fascinating technique that I don't ever want to have to do again.

455 I don't do the cold thing all the time, but often carry a 1.5 liter bottle that I freeze half way, laying the bottle at an angle. That makes it cold for quite a while. I've never noticed the energy drain, but I spread it out over a couple hours.

456 I never talked about calories, I spoke in terms of energy. I am well aware that calories are not a perfect measurement of energy storage for your body.

I am aware of hormonal responses in the body to regulate glucose and glucogen which is why I mentioned homeostasis.

I respectfully suggest that now would be a good time to retire gracefully from the field.

Here, have a Snickers.

458
I remember reading something about "cold stress". In modern First World countries, we're getting pussified with the climate control.

And it was about how doing "cold stress", getting out in cold weather and making your body do more work to maintain temperature was a good thing, and could help shift things back to the fat burning side.

Then there was something about "whole body cryotherapy", which is exposing the body to extremely cold air ( -100C) for a couple minutes.

That has other uses, but I remember something about weight loss studies with it.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at September 22, 2017 10:48 PM (8O3HH)

459 ace have you read Lyle McDonald's books?

"Ultimate Diet 2.0"?
"The Ketogenic Diet: A Complete Guide..."
"Rapid Fat Loss"
etc. etc. ?

You should.

You really should.

Yes, but obviously the calories present in what is consumed do not equate to a 1-1 conversion of energy stored and used in the body since it is dependent on digestive properties which is why I avoided discussing calories.

I know someone who does it for Olympic athletes' recovery after training. Similar to the ice baths that many, many sports use. Have also seen studies that it's purely in their heads (which is fine, as long as it works, right?)

Why isn't the conversion rate at least constant? Laws and all being so?

463 The combination of caffeine with Ephedrine will boost metabolic rate.

DNP will too.

I was fond of my nicotine.

So, less in does not necessarily correlate to more out? There's more involved than the "thermodynamics" that you invoked in yet another comment?

What, precisely, are you arguing for, or against?

467 I guess if one could measure every process in the body, examine all the pee/poop/sweat, examine every exhaled breath, kept a record of total body temps and external temps, work done (resting and active), measured body fat ... one could maybe work out how all the energy was conserved
(i.e. calories in = calories out).

But it seems clear the body can do different things with the inputs, and it is possible to manage that to some degree. And each body is probably predisposed to some different responses. The ketogenic diet thing sounds interesting ... certainly one approach.

468 Ahhh...Valerie Plame!

I had a nickname for her : Greasy-Face!

I'm sure men look at bleached blonde basic give-it-outs differently, but I noticed that she always had a greasy film on the top of her skin.

Yuck.

469 For leftists, having a child is the worst decision they could possibly make.

Either the child turns out normal, in which case the poor kid has to deal with their crazy useless idiot parents, or they turn out like mom and dad, in which case the world has yet another oxygen thief.

470 This whole "stand-down" order is complete CAOS.
Since when did cops ever have "orders" that superseded their oaths to order and their sworn allegiance to the Constitution, Law, and Order ?!!!
Very disrecpectful to fantastic police people, worldwide.

472 This is comment no. 472, so no fucking way Ace of Spades HQ will read it. But he/she/it should know that he was billed as this counterpoint to the bullshit left, calling them on their hypocrisy, etc., etc. And yet, he fails at every attempt to equate truly shitty behavior on the right with snowflake reactions to stupid but not racist/bigoted/assholish behavior (the province of the right) on the left. "Valerie Plame is an anti-semite, far worse than Steve Bannon." Bull-fucking-shit, and you know it. Bannon not only sucks his own cock but also runs a full on media platform, which is NOT EQUIVALENT to a tweet by VP." Or how about, "Obama say he would 'destroy North Korea' so ding ding ding hypocrisy!" Re-read the context, mother fucker. Ace of Spades HQ is so full of shit. I thought he might be able to offer an intellectual antidote to the bullshit I see on the left. Instead, he just diddles his fingers and pretends to be an intellectual heavyweight. What a fraud.

473 Ace, Cole doesn't recommend dry fasting for overweight folks. I followed your link, watched a bunch of his videos, and he says that in the "WHY FAT PEOPLE NEED SNAKE JUICE FOR FAST WEIGHT LOSS" video.
Thanks for referencing his stuff. His McDonald's challenge was fun.

474 Meet a couple who did just that.

Never...ever...post a waste of time article like that again. Please. I think in France it's called enui. Here in the US it's called a 10,000 word POS. By the time I got through 7500 words I wanted to vomit projectile. This has nothing to do with what the couple did. It was the writing.
