Shocker: Maine Socialist Susan Collins "Leaning Against" Obamacare Repeal
Another Shock: JOHN McCAIN, HERO OF CONSERVATISM, WILL VOTE TO SAVE OBAMACARE

What we need to do is protect our most liberal senators by voting in solidarity with them, or cancelling votes so as not to embarrass them, so that the GOP is always defined by its most liberal elements.

It's worked like gangbusters so far.

BTW, I realize Rand Paul is against this bill for retaining many parts of Obamacare. I get that. But that's not why Susan Collins is against it. Remember, she was one of the last to announce she was opposing Obamacare in the first place -- probably only because she knew the Democrats had enough votes and didn't need hers. So she probably voted against it purely as a tactical move.

And Here It Is: John McCain comes in to White Knight for his fellow socialist traveler, and will protect her by voting against the bill too.

Article here. Once again he's claiming his only problem is with procedure.

"McCain Strikes Again," Drudge headlines.

Betrayed by John McCain voting with the Democrats. Never saw this coming.

If it means stopping buying but still reading, fine. If it means buying and, er, "distributing" a la Hillary and her totes okay illegal bathroom server, I'm starting to warm up to the idea of that, too. Laws for everyone or laws for no one, right (D)s?

They aren't satisfied with simple disagreement or well-considered criticism. They want violence against you if/when you don't agree. It's incredible to realize how reserved and non-violent the right has been as an answer to these people.

Hey (D)s, when it occurs to people that you're noticeably more violent than your jew-hating white supremacist / KKK buddies, you may have a problem.

Maine is the oldest state in the country (as in, average age is the oldest.)

The state is made up of retirees (many from MA and other liberal states), then true Mainers, many of whom can't find good work due to a variety of reasons, but fishing and logging have been killed by the federal govt in recent years.

All that being said, the expanded Medicaid is a huge boon to ME, since many of the younger people work seasonal touristy jobs that put them over the bottom limit for traditional medicaid. And most of these jobs dont have health benefits.

Thus, why all pols in ME are hesitant to get rid of O'Care. Because then it becomes Maines problem again to deal with all of these uninsured people.

Oh, plus the opiate crisis is hitting the state hard.

109 It's not a lie or kabuki to assert, and act as though, O-care cannot simply be repealed *solely* through reconciliation. But it's either mendacious or disingenuous or incompetent not to make the "phased repeal" approach both understood and credible.

If either the leadership or the WH/HHS or the likely behavior of such as Collins had, in fact, made the phased repeal approach credible, in terms of their intentions, and bothered to educate and do "politics" about it - then, and only then, would the position of Rand Paul and perhaps others be seen as perverse.

The nominal "phased" approach made perfect sense, and comported with the way the mechanics of Congress actually work. But it relied/relies on the credibility of GOP Hill leadership, and the WH, to actually go through with it. That is, to not just stop at Phase 1 (a reconciliation-based partial repeal).

The credibility of this approach has pretty much disappeared, following WH behavior (continue subsidies, illegally, to avert a very quick and concrete crisis in the tiny, collapsing O-care system, and limp regulatory performance by HHS, which could/should be slashing the system to shreds via waivers etc.), and of course the McCain debacle (and very likely the worse debacle of hidden free "yes" votes that McCain's vote allowed to remain hidden).

So, as some said when the phased approach was first discussed, you get Phase 1, and that's ALL you ever get.

Which leaves the most destructive elements in place, even as the tiny artificial O-care system itself collapses. But note the only discussion, the only issues apparently even at play, that anyone from "moderate" GOP to governors even care about, is Medicaid.

Due to the incompetence of our political class - including the WH and its new unconventional chief - the disaster of O-care continues unchecked, and the only "debate" is over Medicaid (a "program" that's decades old, has spent more than the planet spent on WWII, to little actual benefit, and has nothing at all to do with O-care itself).

(Angus King is one of those 'independents' whose views coincidentally align more with Bernie Sanders; i.e. Better Red Than Dead.) Those fuckers have been decimating libertarian and conservative principles in the state since the 1970s. And somehow they keep getting elected. I love Maine, but overall it's a poor state, and electorally they can't seem to say no to the promise of sweet, sweet government lucre. Never seems to help, though.

Posted by: Marcus T at September 22, 2017 01:35 PM (6fmef)

There's plenty of those for sure - but there are also relatively large populations (compared to the total population of Maine which is approx 1.3 million people) of people who are very poor, very lazy, and very dependent of government cheese in order to survive. Its partially their own fault, partially economics playing against them. Maine basically has natural resources, but we're not allowed to really exploit them. Logging has all dried up. The last real papermill in the state is about to shutter, and so what we're left with is the highly regulated Lobster fishing industry, and tourism. Problem is that, unlike Florida, tourism only happens from Memorial day through this coming weekend.

The tax base is people like me who pay out the nose to live here. My property tax rates are insane, and my income tax is also. My wife and I make over half a million dollars a year in salary but it hardly feels like it at all. You'd think we'd be high on the hog, and while we live in a very nice area, in a nice house, its nothing compared to what we could afford where we're from in NC, GA or FL.

I'm in the camp that any improvement is worthwhile over the status quo. A clean repeal is not going to happen, time to move on and start fixing our broken system.

Well, according to the article:

The Industry is in trouble. Unlike others they have a distribution network only meant to further Marvel/DC properties. For real change to happen, fans have to support indies.

I'm not a fan of either comics, or sports, but I'd imagine killing of the toxic comic branch of Disney is far easier than killing off the toxic sports branch of Disney.

Creating an alternative to the NFL would involve attracting comparably talented players, building stadia, etc. and people who need their "fix" aren't going to wait patiently until that takes place.

But with comics, I'd think acceptable alternatives would be easier to come by, and thus Marvel could be dropped much more easily, once fans realize that they aren't enjoying themselves anymore.

Arlen Spectre came out to Saudi in the 80's when they were building a new Embassy Chancery, American School and Embassy housing on the diplomatic quarter. The Saudis had established the DQ to protect impressionable Saudi citizens from evil ideas from Western Countries.

1. Spectre looked at the houses and said they were too big. When Admin stated that kids/families/individuals couldn't go outside because of the heat, and had to play inside, he ignored them and said it was good for kids to play outside. (Ave spring and summer temp was 110)

2. The Saudis saw the school going in, and decided they wanted it for a prince's school. They offered a compromise by sending diplomatic kids to a school 45 minutes away from the compound. Arlen agreed.

When we were there, prior to 9/11, Embassy school buses going to the American school were getting tailed and harassed. The princes on the DQ were harassing American Embassy families walking to the Chancery from their homes. But Arlen was happy.

I don't much care for the man.

337 If McCain wants regular order, then the first step is to rip out the monstrosity that is ObamaCare. It was past using every legislative trick in the book and forced down the throat of an unwilling populace. First, repeal that obscene offense to regular order committed by his democrat friends. THEN he can spend his dying days as the philosopher legislator as he desires using regular order. YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE RULES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EFFING GAME.

When we moved to GJ, CO in '75, the family car was a 55 chevy 2 door
that dad bought before he went into the service. Column shift. It would
slip linkage in 2nd gear and mom would have to pull over, pop the hood
and do something with a screw driver. One day at the gas station, some
mexican kid came up to her and said 'womens like you shouldn't drive
cars like that.' We still laugh about that. It was shiny red with Earl
Scheib paint and red and white tuck and roll some mexicans in so cal did
back in the 60's. Memories.

I've worked with a lot of fundraising professionals over the years. One of the largest charitable giving ventures is for pediatric healthcare. More charity money is raised annually for this cause than the GDP of several small nations.

I would venture to say there isn't a pediatric hospital in the nation that doesn't have 1. A LARGE donor base just for the "less fortunate" and 2. A special care fund.

These people, yet again, use children and their misery to push their heinous, insidious schemes on the rest of us. And ignorant fucking dickhead assholes like Kimmel are their useful idiots. Um, no. Congress can bring this up at any time. This year, next year, the year after that. Whenever they finally choose to do it. It will happen. The fallout will get worse and worse. Just watch.

Dems aren't going to win next year. If anything, pro-MAGA Rs will appear to primary RINO Rs and pro-MAGA Rs will run against Dems up for re-election.

I'm very confident that Moore will win next week. Kid Rock has a shot at Michigan. It just keeps going from there. There is no chance for Dems to pick up any seats in next year's elections. Only a lot of chances to lose MORE seats.

I'm totally fine with what's happening. It only reveals who is swampy.

559 One thing I don't get is that, purely from the perception point, the Republicans failing to vote to repeal enables the Democrats to have their cake and eat it too. Fancy that, oh brilliant tacticians of the Stupid Party.

The Democrats get to keep Obamacare, which is effectively permanent, AND instead of it hanging around their neck like an albatross - surprise - the R's now have at least partial ownership (hey, if it was as bad as they said, they had every opportunity to repeal or come up with an alternative, and they did nothing).

In addition, it is now a club for Democrats to beat R's with, mocking them for their ineffectiveness, failure of leadership, and incompetence.

Moreover, they will spin it as "Evil Republicans and Trump wanted to take your benefits away, and we (despite being in the minority party) kept them from it."

Total, abject failure.

The problem with failing to resist slippery slopes is that sooner or later you end up in a valley, and it's uphill all around. If the hill-to-not-die-on is a slippery slope, you run out of hills, high ground, and any ability to regain them, and die in the (metaphorical) ditch.

613 OTOH, lack of any ObamaCare bills makes it more likely that some conditions will be attached to DACA amnesty. 614 John McCain made overtures to Democratic Party leadership many years ago, told them he was contemplating switching parties. Thing is, he wanted to keep his seniority. The Democrats were supposedly unreceptive at the time.

I argue McCain did make the switch in fact if not in deed. The way it works now, he can advance the Democratic Party's agenda while keeping his seniority in the Senate.

It's win-win for everybody but us.

The maverick bit & the media...yes. The golden days of old. But I don't understand when people get caught in binary choices. It is the media AND Trump AND his age AND his brain tumor, IMO. It is the perfect storm for bad decision making.

637 So, the great Senator McCain can't support another bill to repeal Obamacare...when are we going to see his most excellent plan that he has spent eight or more years crafting, that will get this wonderful bipartisan support? Oh, yeah. He didn't think it was worth working on because he didn't expect to have a majority and a president who would sign it. So he takes the ball and walks away from the hard working American people who cannot pay their bills once taxes, health insurance, and now those high deductibles come off the top. Misery for all = equality!

The Republican Party is a useless, embarrassing joke, and if they were at all serious about governing and/or doing so with any hint of conservatism they would've cut Collins, Murkowski, McCain, etc off a long time ago. Instead they let these tools hand de facto control of the Senate over to the Democrats.
