I brought this up late on the last thread, so I hope it's okay to resurrect it. 316 Kind of OT: I saw the item on the ONT about Avery Brooks, the first black lead in a Star Trek series. I'm pleased to see, though, that someone remembers him as Hawk from Spenser for Hire.
Hawk in the Robert B. Parker books is such a dynamic and almost mythic character, I didn't think anybody could ever play him effectively. But Avery Brooks nailed it. No one since has managed to come close! A couple of people suggested we could have a Spenser book thread -- or maybe even a general Robert B. Parker thread. He wrote a lot of other stuff too, like the Sunny Randall stories and Jesse Stones (both set in the same universe as Spenser), and the Appaloosa westerns too. Oddly, Lot was spared from the God's wrath against the sexual deviants and reprobates.
Later, he got drunk and banged his daughters. A true testimony to the rebellious and sinful nature of men. In spite of witnessing firsthand the destruction of the city and meeting angels, his wife lamented leaving the perverse and Lot continued his own immoral ways. For those that can't understand how individuals will still be able to deny the Lord's authority when He returns, witness this story to remind yourselves that original sin and the desire to be as God holds a strong grip on mankind and ego will lead many down the path of destruction. Lot and his daughters. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at September 22, 2017 09:41 AM (pNxlR) 65
What's great about this work is the smallness of the people. The scene is filled with blacks, reds and yellows--the colors of violence, fire, destruction and death. These colors are activated by the swirling firestorm that engulfs everything like a whirlpool. Then over on the right you have the only two patches of white. Lot and his daughters were no saints so the color was chosen, not to symbolize purity, but to contrast the others. And it's just enough white. There's even a second dab of white to show the fate of his wife.
But what's also interesting is that, while Lot wasn't righteous, he was when compared to the Sodomites. So the contrast in text is rendered in color. This is a horrific story, full of evil and tragedy. The painting uses dramatic color, line and form to render the awesome wrath of God and our puniness and helplessness against it. There is a lot to write about here. Nice pick, CBD. Posted by: Kris at September 22, 2017 09:41 AM (nwqNw) 66

And they tapped him to complete the unfinished manuscript about Philip Marlowe that Chandler had left when he died. The second book in the series, God Save the Child, was the last one where he tried to do clever, tricky plotting; the others are quite a bit simpler. But it was also the one where Spenser meets Susan. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 22, 2017 09:42 AM (K8zi1) 73

I came back to the US from Europe. It was an interesting time. Had watched the Rodney King riots on CNN and thought I was coming back to a country in flames.
Not so much. Kurt Cobain had also recently blown his head off with a shotgun. Came back and was staying with my (then) BiL - he was young and took Rolling Stone magazine. They had an entire issue devoted to letters to RS about Cobain. I should have taken from that the country was in far worse shape than had it been on fire from riots. I learned from it that Cobain spoke for a generation. That's what a lot of the letters said. The guy rhymed mosquito and libido. The burning times were on the far horizon. I should have known then. The painting is effective although not subtle. The combination of brilliant colors with darker hues is impressive and emphasizes the power being displayed. Like other of Martin's paintings dealing with apocalyptic themes, the human figures are dwarfed by the size and power of nature and how God uses it for His will.
I don't know where this would be hung. It doesn't seem like the kind of painting that would be in a private home. Obviously a coincidence, there is the hint a mushroom cloud in the upper left part of the painting. Posted by: JTB at September 22, 2017 09:44 AM (V+03K) 85

92 And they tapped him to complete the unfinished manuscript about Philip Marlowe that Chandler had left when he died.
Yeah, I read that. It's not bad. His sequel to The Big Sleep is also pretty good, for what it is. Those are what really made me decide to start the Spenser series, after reading praise here and there. Posted by: Lance McCormick at September 22, 2017 * * I think it was Chandler who said that Sherlock Holmes was not much more than an attitude and a few lines of unforgettable dialogue. An uncharitable person (not it, sir, not I) might say the same thing about Chandler's Marlowe stories. Certainly Parker was able to capture that attitude and that style of dialogue for the PM continuation novels. His Spensers are quite a bit different. Spenser likes his work, generally speaking, and is a fairly happy guy with Susan on one hand and Hawk on the other. Marlowe lives for his work and not much more that we're ever shown (aside from working out chess problems and smoking a pipe). Spenser has other interests and has done a lot of other things. That YA Spenser that Parker did was very well done. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 22, 2017 09:50 AM (K8zi1) 110
somehow Lot kept his daughters pure in the rape gang town.
offered to sacrifice their purity to save the strangers (who were actually angels) I presume that was essentially a prophecy, a pure savior would be sacrificed to save strangers (gentiles) that entered his house. JC the lamb of God saves Jew and Gentile alike, that come unto him. So the story goes. But we don't need that now because we have the government. And this painting really shows the future according to Gore, if we don't stop driving cars. /s Posted by: illiniwek at September 22, 2017 09:50 AM (yKAUL) 111

The best word I can use to describe my feelings about Teh Gheyness is "distasteful." I find the concept of two men making out distasteful. I don't want to see it in ads. I don't want it in front of my kids. I don't want to have to "celebrate" two dudes swapping spit (or worse) like they've just found the cure for cancer. I'm fine with tolerance, in its original meaning, which is to say one may only "tolerate" that which one does not like. So, if you want "tolerance" you have to support my right not to like it. Certainly Parker was able to capture that attitude and that style of dialogue for the PM continuation novels. The other thing about the Marlowe novels is that there aren't many of them, and at least a couple are pretty weak. There's a point at which it seems like Chandler said *almost* all he wanted to, or all he could, about Marlowe, but could never get that last bit and put a bow on it. This morning I also thought a bit about how a politician could really get to the heart of the Sanders-Warren-Socialist immorality by talking about what it means "to covet" as in not to covet your neighbor's wife, or house. The whole, evil "99%" vs "1%" theme that has ramped up in many incarnations these past years since Occupy is nothing but pure covetesness, or envy, being endorsed as a positive way of life.
The only logical, moral alternative to envy leads one to equality of opportunity, which leads to things like the rule of law. Which, in a free society, leads to inequality of result. To reject that inequality is to reject equality of law, equality of opportunity and freedom. It's not climate science. Posted by: Long train of abuses at September 22, 2017 10:00 AM (QtQaN) 143

I am looking for a little insight into Moore v. Strange vote this weekend. I am a big PDT supporter, not in the "I support everything he proposes" sense, but in the "he makes all the right people flip their shit" sense -- and I include in that second group McCain, Romney, etc.
On the one hand, I think sending a message to GOPe is a great thing - get your shit straight, and start representing your voters' interests, rather than continuing with the failure theater. If the nominee chosen by the voters of your party from a given state makes you uncomfortable enough to resign, then don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. One of the many reasons I backed PDT, but unfortunately, he threw his lot in with the other guy. On the other hand, I cringe a bit where this chosen hero is concerned. I don't support activist judges of any stripe, and I can foresee the MSM (*spit*) nationalizing Moore as the face of the Republican party and my chosen home state, as well as spinning a Moore win as a defeat for PDT. Like it or not, I don't see that as a desirable result. I will vote tomorrow -- but I don't like my choices! Posted by: New, but not new-new at September 22, 2017 10:12 AM (o+IyF) 183

One of the things I find most fascinating about Turner is that almost all of his major paintings involve a swirling Vortex of some kind. Sometimes it dominates the painting, as in Hannibal crossing the alps, occasionally it's more subtle, but it's almost always there somewhere. (but not in his very early works) Makes me wonder if he ran into a Tardis somewhere along the way. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 22, 2017 10:15 AM (k1TUh) 198

65 What's great about this work is the smallness of the people.
Posted by: Kris at September 22, 2017 09:41 AM (nwqNw) Yes, Kris. Imputed Righteousness. God saves sinners. Turner was a Romantic. One of their philosophies was the majesty of Nature and the dark side of human existence. They were the opposite of the NeoClassicists who believed in the absolute power and magnificence of Man. The Romantics countered that by depicting Man's fallacies and weaknesses. One way to do this effectively was to depict the helplessness of Man against the full power of Nature. The superstorm was a common theme. Turner probably also liked the image because it allowed for a more expressive style. Something that was also the opposite of the classicism. Posted by: Kris at September 22, 2017 10:24 AM (nwqNw) 232

his morning I also thought a bit about how a politician could really get to the heart of the Sanders-Warren-Socialist immorality by talking about what it means "to covet" as in not to covet your neighbor's wife, or house. The whole, evil "99%" vs "1%" theme that has ramped up in many incarnations these past years since Occupy is nothing but pure covetesness, or envy, being endorsed as a positive way of life.

The Turner isn't a Bible story, it's a depiction of the army of Carthage crossing the Alps to attack ancient Rome during the Punic Wars. Rome's victory in those wars would pave the way to its control of the Mediterranean. Only Carthage was strong enough to hold challenge them. The Alps was famous for its snowstorms, and Turner is using this story as an allegory for Napoleon. Hannibal and Napoleon crossed the Alps at the same spot--the St. Barnard Pass. There's a famous J-L David painting celebrating the Frenchman's trip. Posted by: Kris at September 22, 2017 10:38 AM (nwqNw) 295

Climatistas go ballistic when anyone points out that the only reason Hannibal could take Elephants across the Alps was because average temperatures were about 4 - 5 degrees higher then than now. A Republican senator wants to know whether the FBI warned the Trump campaign about Russian attempts to infiltrate the campaign.
Bombshell revelations this week about former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort are what prompted the inquiry, made by the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley to FBI Director Christopher Wray. In a letter to Wray, Grassley asks whether the FBI ever provided a "defensive briefing" or any other warnings about "attempts to infiltrate the campaign by people connected with, or compromised by, Russian intelligence." "Such a briefing allows innocent, unwitting organizations and individuals to take defensive action to protect themselves," Grassley wrote to Wray. He pointed to a report out earlier this year that in 2008, U.S. intelligence raised concerns about Manafort's foreign consulting work to Arizona Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign.
Manafort's business partner, Rick Davis, was McCain's campaign manager. At the time, Manafort and Davis were working on behalf of then-Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych. The business partners also arranged two meetings between McCain and Deripaska, the Russian oligarch who Manafort offered to brief last year. Grassley told Wray that the circumstances that prompted a defensive briefing to McCain's campaign about Manafort's work "seem substantially similar" to the situation surrounding the Trump campaign. If you enlarge the painting (by Martin) and zoom in on just the building being destroyed, it does, almost, look like a meteor strike.
But something large enough to reach the surface would be pushing a huge shock wave. Like the one in Russia that exploded at altitude, there is a lot of kinetic energy that has to disperse in the atmosphere, not to mention the energy from a surface strike. You wouldn't want to be anywhere near such an event. Fascinating to think about, and try to imagine. Posted by: Skandia Recluse at September 22, 2017 10:48 AM (m9X4Y) 320

I should have said that the the Alps were famous for their snowstorms in Turner's time. He's not going for historical accuracy here. I doubt he even knew about the climate fluctuations over the centuries. He's using a common, contemporary image of danger and a well-known story from European history to aid his message about world events and human existence. After she read the script she threw it across the room and told him he had 'sever psychological problems.' Yet she's pissed at the critics that panned it? Well, alllllrighty then Jlaw. You're extremely stable. #eyeroll. Posted by: Tami at September 22, 2017 11:32 AM (Enq6K) 439

Much to my surprise, dotard is a real word. It means old fart.

I mean it would show a bit more maturity to say, "Oh, well, some people don't like the film "Mother".? That's the way it goes.

Now, I'd always felt bad for Lot on account of the wife getting salt-pillared, but it looks as if there was a ready handmaid there to salve his wounds.
As it were. Do you think Mr. and Mrs. Lot meet in the afterlife with Orpheus and Eurydice to compare notes? Do they argue about who's the poseur and who ripped off whose story? Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 22, 2017 11:34 AM (gIRsn) 444
Romantics.
Sodomy. Is that the connection? Or maybe I'm just a moron. No, that's the connection. No one was gayer than the Romans. Posted by: Shep Smith at September 22, 2017 11:35 AM (BUakI) 445

Well, for one thing, Roman numerals. Posted by: Cicero "Many machines on Ix" Posted by: Some Third Stage Navigator at September 22, 2017 11:35 AM (di1hb) 446
Has anyone ever heard of that?
Yes - they've been doing that for years. Never pay at the pump with a debit card. Posted by: Lizzy at September 22, 2017 10:27 AM (W+vEI) Yep. It's been common practice for a long time. There's usually a notice right on the pump. Posted by: Insomniac at September 22, 2017 10:28 AM (NWiLs) Not here in my part of NJ. I pay with a debit card at Quick Check for gas, go home (10 minutes away) and check my account on line and the exact amount I paid for gas is already on the statement. I'm not sodomite, but I have been a frequent visitor in Gammora...in my mind.

Sorry I'm late! This one's OK, but I like Henry O. Tanner's painting of the same subject much better.
