Hawk in the Robert B. Parker books is such a dynamic and almost mythic character, I didn't think anybody could ever play him effectively. But Avery Brooks nailed it. No one since has managed to come close!
A couple of people suggested we could have a Spenser book thread -- or maybe even a general Robert B. Parker thread. He wrote a lot of other stuff too, like the Sunny Randall stories and Jesse Stones (both set in the same universe as Spenser), and the Appaloosa westerns too.

But what's also interesting is that, while Lot wasn't righteous, he was when compared to the Sodomites. So the contrast in text is rendered in color.
This is a horrific story, full of evil and tragedy. The painting uses dramatic color, line and form to render the awesome wrath of God and our puniness and helplessness against it.

Parker's work is very much like Chandler. He was an English prof, and did his dissertation on Chandler, I think. And they tapped him to complete the unfinished manuscript about Philip Marlowe that Chandler had left when he died.
The second book in the series, God Save the Child, was the last one where he tried to do clever, tricky plotting; the others are quite a bit simpler. But it was also the one where Spenser meets Susan.

I think it was Chandler who said that Sherlock Holmes was not much more than an attitude and a few lines of unforgettable dialogue. An uncharitable person (not it, sir, not I) might say the same thing about Chandler's Marlowe stories. Certainly Parker was able to capture that attitude and that style of dialogue for the PM continuation novels.
His Spensers are quite a bit different. Spenser likes his work, generally speaking, and is a fairly happy guy with Susan on one hand and Hawk on the other. Marlowe lives for his work and not much more that we're ever shown (aside from working out chess problems and smoking a pipe). Spenser has other interests and has done a lot of other things.
That YA Spenser that Parker did was very well done.

An uncharitable person (not it, sir, not I) might say the same thing about Chandler's Marlowe stories. Certainly Parker was able to capture that attitude and that style of dialogue for the PM continuation novels.
The other thing about the Marlowe novels is that there aren't many of them, and at least a couple are pretty weak.
There's a point at which it seems like Chandler said *almost* all he wanted to, or all he could, about Marlowe, but could never get that last bit and put a bow on it.
But maybe I'm projecting and looking for more depth than is there.

On the one hand, I think sending a message to GOPe is a great thing - get your shit straight, and start representing your voters' interests, rather than continuing with the failure theater. One of the things I find most fascinating about Turner is that almost all of his major paintings involve a swirling Vortex of some kind. Sometimes it dominates the painting, as in Hannibal crossing the alps, occasionally it's more subtle, but it's almost always there somewhere. (but not in his very early works)
Makes me wonder if he ran into a Tardis somewhere along the way.

This guy was saying he bought like $20 of gas on a Friday, then on Monday used his card again, with technically enough cash in the account, but because of the "hold" deal, his account was overdrawn.
They whacked him $38 fee for that.
Unfuckingbelievable.
Why hasn't someone started a class action suit against these thieves?

I wonder that if Strange wins, as the incumbent and the guy Trump backed, the results will get far less play, and will fade into the woodwork just as all the congressional special elections earlier this year did when the Trump-backed candidate prevailed. Very true. In fact the gas pumps around here have a sign saying the gas station is not responsible for holds placed on accounts and you must contact your bank or card issuer.

The Turner isn't a Bible story, it's a depiction of the army of Carthage crossing the Alps to attack ancient Rome during the Punic Wars. Rome's victory in those wars would pave the way to its control of the Mediterranean. Only Carthage was strong enough to hold challenge them.
The Alps was famous for its snowstorms, and Turner is using this story as an allegory for Napoleon. Hannibal and Napoleon crossed the Alps at the same spot--the St. Barnard Pass. There's a famous J-L David painting celebrating the Frenchman's trip.

But something large enough to reach the surface would be pushing a huge shock wave. Like the one in Russia that exploded at altitude, there is a lot of kinetic energy that has to disperse in the atmosphere, not to mention the energy from a surface strike. I should have asked for an intervention here, but I finally bought the 128 GB iPad II (I think is a II, but Apple's nomenclature scheme sucks big time), and I must admit I like it. Much more responsive than the antique first generation iPad that I still use as a backup!

I have an iPad 3 which I got from CowBoom before it went boom at $100 off - refurbed and in perfect condition I paid $199 for a 64GB wifi model. I think they are hard to find at that price even now.
