Stanwood Elkus one pissed off dude.

Twenty-five years ago, Stanwood Elkus checked into a Veterans Affairs hospital in Long Beach, Cailfornia, for a surgery to correct a urethral stricture.
He checked out after a botched surgery with incontinence, a low sex drive, and erectile dysfunction. He spent the next twenty years letting his anger snowball– all the way to murder.

It pays not to wear pants. Especially when they explode.

FEW PROFESSIONALS ASK MORE OF their trousers than farmers. Their rugged, often dirty work no doubt taxes the cleanliness and durability of any garment. Perhaps the least a farmer can ask of his pants is that they don’t spontaneously burst into flames. But in the case of a number of agricultural workers in 1930s New Zealand, it turns out, that was indeed too much to ask.

Fans of Discovery’s long-running science-and-explosions show, Mythbusters, might be familiar with the strange spate of self-immolating trousers that briefly plagued New Zealand farmers in the 1930s. What’s less commonly known about this unusual saga is that it all began with a weed called ragwort.

52 Rumor has it that the Morons who inhabit this Smart Military Blog know a thing or two about guns. I took my 03 Springfield to the range today. Amazing weapon. Action like butter. The ancients knew how to make a machine. Not a weapon I would want in a firefight. Holy Hell- heavy and my shoulder was sore after 20 rounds. I don't know how my grandfather lugged that damn thing across Europe. Anyway the question- How do you use the ladder sight? I get that it has 4 aiming notches. I had pretty good grouping with the battle sight, and peep sight set at 100yds. But the ladder goes up to 2800 yds, I'm not trying to make shots that far, but I'm not sure how I would get a sight picture with it set that high unless I hold my head up high. It almost feels like shooting from the hip. Is this right, or am I missing something. Google is full of explanations of the parts of the sight, but not how to employ it.

I've told this story before. The only time I ever went to a strip club, I walked in, sat down on a barstool, and BOOM, I was on the floor.

Seems the guy two seats down hauled off and slugged the guy next to me and he knocked me off my stool.

It happened faster than it took to type it. Walked in, sat down, BOOM.

I stuck around and had a couple of beers, and the bartender was super polite to me, but I never had the urge to go back.

79 Insomniac, I'm the exact same way.

I can't for the life of me figure out how some people can delude themselves so completely about those women. "Oh no, this dancer chick really LIKES me!!" Uh huh.

I had a boss (now former, of course) who once insisted on dragging me to one of those places, Fritz's in Bellflower (now gone). I lasted all of 45 minutes before finally begging off and leaving.

He also loved a place (still there, I believe) in Norwalk, where supposedly the 'dancing girls' break California law and will *hug and kiss* the patrons. Legend has it they've got performing there of the best-tipped working women in the whole state.

85 My urethral VA story: I once had a pt who came to me on a managed care Medicare plan. He had been getting most of his care at the local VA (because it was free) but came to us because he had had a catheter in his bladder for six months.

Yes. Six months. He had a history of prostate CA and also enlarged prostate, couldn't pee on his own. Had been seeing Urology at the VA and no one would touch him. I referred him to one of our urologists who was a little apprehensive but did the surgery and he did well. He thanked us very much and went back to his free medical care at the VA.

Just a little picture of our future...

He follows that one up with his final video which shows he found to flip up the rear sight and use the bottom of the triangle on the rear sight moved up one notch.

I just flip the rear sight up and use the bottom of the triangle at 50 and 100 yards.

The front sight posts can vary due to different heights I believe so you have to play with the rear sight triangle bottom notch sliding up or down or use the circle in the bottom sight.

I used it with the ladder down (battle sight) it is set for 500 yds, but it was close enough for plinking at 50. I used the peep sight set as low as I could, 100 yards, also good at 50. 50-100yds is as far as I would engage anything anyway. I think the tippy top notch was for volley fire back in the day.

There is a USMC rear sight with slight differences too.

Depending on the ammo and how it shoots, I play with the rear sight picture by sliding the front sight post either buried at the bottom of the notch, or half way or normal.

Loads of fun and a great rifle.

Last night and today was a real pisser. Dear old Dad (89), in an Ambien induced stupor, managed to fall and break his hip.

He'd been slightly sick and was more than slightly cantankerous. I got over there and tried to keep watch on him. He wouldn't stay still, and me with this damned RA, I couldn't manhandle him which is what was needed.

Well, I thought he was going to finally sleep on the couch, relaxed, and bam! he was up like a shot and fell right on the floor. Then he was in some real pain.

Hip was broken. Surgery tomorrow. Sometime, yet unknown. At 89, this is not good at all. This is likely the beginning of the end, I'm afraid to say.

I was also about to say Model 12 or possibly 1200. Looks like the bolt may have the characteristic M-12 beveled corner. However -- and I'm certainly no expert -- but I have never heard of a left-handed M-12. Does such a thing actually exist? Seems more likely that the image has been flipped. I tried to see if the logo on the cap would tell but couldn't due to the lack of resoution in the image. A quick bing only found this not very definitive answer:

Tim Tebow. from all accounts, a truly devout Christian, which makes him the guy we can all point at and laugh.

As for kneeling, I think these SJW types just don't get it. I grew up Catholic, and genuflection was a way of acknowledging that you were in the presence of the Lord. It was not an act of defiance. it was an honest, humble request to be a part of the majesty.

Rumor has it that the Morons who inhabit this Smart Military Blog know a
thing or two about guns. I took my 03 Springfield to the range today.
Amazing weapon. Action like butter. The ancients knew how to make a
machine. Not a weapon I would want in a firefight. Holy Hell- heavy and
my shoulder was sore after 20 rounds. I don't know how my grandfather
lugged that damn thing across Europe. Anyway the question- How do you
use the ladder sight? I get that it has 4 aiming notches. I had pretty
good grouping with the battle sight, and peep sight set at 100yds. But
the ladder goes up to 2800 yds, I'm not trying to make shots that far,
but I'm not sure how I would get a sight picture with it set that high
unless I hold my head up high. It almost feels like shooting from the
hip. Is this right, or am I missing something. Google is full of
explanations of the parts of the sight, but not how to employ it.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at September 23, 2017 10:14 PM (BoMuO)--------

Can't get a "good" sight picture with the ladder sight?
First, what kind of "sight picture" were you expecting with iron sights at extreme ranges, anyway?Second, are your sure you're not being confused by the barrel elevation angle and holding the rifle incorrectly? It's a bit like the snap-on plastic sight for the M203 on the M16 -- ignore the elevation angle and the unusual position of the weapon, and rely on the sights -- assuming the range is dialed in correctly....

No car, although I'm sure i can get an Uber. These heavily urban areas always piss me off. I walked to a nice Thai restaurant called "Brown Sugar" (I think). Only .6 miles from my hotel as the crow flies, but almost 30 minutes to walk to go around major roadways and traffic. Thankfully, a nice homeless man begging cars for change redirected me from a dead end. Strange, sudden transformation of neighborhoods I walked through: run down area with what appeared to be European/Russian immigrants, then college students in apartments, then a shopping/restaurant area with a high percentage of Asians.

Harbaugh (the coach of the Mich. Wolverines) for some reason decided to chime in and tell PDT to "check the Constitution".

Uhhh, pretty sure there's a lot of things the league bans players from doing or saying, or face penalties such as fines, suspensions, or possibly firing.

They can ban players from celebrating in the endzone. They can ban players from using Twitter during the games. They can ban them from wearing certain shoe color, or the Cowboys from wearing stickers honoring the murdered Dallas police officers.

They can sure as hell ban kneeling, and fine, suspend, fire those that won't listen.

They do a lot in the name of preventing "conduct unbecoming of the league" to protect their image. But Goodhell is a fucking clown, and won;t say a peep about this. Keep digging your hole, Roger.

As colfax said, my understanding of such things was to be used as massed fire against distant concentrated infantry, sort of light artillery or indirect fire.

I have unusual tastes in these things, I'm only interested that my bolts (or my M1s) allow me to consistently hold torso-sized targets out to 150-200 yds under semi-realistic conditions (movement, cover, some rested, some off-hand). What they were made for.

And at least to me, that's as difficult as achieving groups of such-and-such a size in target mode. Though on Thursday the Mosin delivered acceptable results, even with my rough technique, and dirt-cheap Soviet surplus ammo.

267 Cracked has an actual interesting article for once;

http://www.cracked.com/article_25082_the-horrifying-easter-egg-everyone-missed-in-indiana-jones.html

The gist is that the the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and Last Crusade was protected from Muslims specifically.

Now, the movie also established that Christianity is basically real. The Grail exists, it comes from a Jewish carpenter, and it grants eternal life. So why the fact that Crusaders would be wary of Muslims comes as a shock I don't know.

Of course this also sheds light on how much we've drifted in the last few years. I'm sure Indiana Jones and Last Crusade wouldn't be made by Hollywood liberals like Spielberg anymore...even though it wasn't considered to be politically questionable at the time.

288 Valid points about the WW1 trench aspects. I was going to mention the Germans using massed-troop movements very early in the war against the BEF but thought it was too narrow a time period to mention and hadn't thought of the trenches after tying into accurately shooting at an area rather than at individuals.

I don't know if the French used massed movements early on; I could see that as being a "Continental" thing contrasted with the BEF's more linear take that had been doctrine even in the musket era let alone after learning the lessons of the Boer/South African Wars.

Currently, none of the eight owners who are known to have donated $1 million each to Trump's inauguration - Robert Kraft of the Patriots, Woody Johnson of the Jets (who was Trump's appointee as ambassador to the United Kingdom), Ed Glazer of Tampa Bay, Shahid Khan of the Jaguars, Stan Kroenke of the Rams, Bob McNair of the Texans, the Cowboys' Jerry Jones or Washington's Daniel Snyder - have released statements, though obviously they are not alone, as there are 18 others who also have not weighed in.

Was just looking at that last list of obvious white supremacist klansme... hey... wait... Shahid Khan of the Jaguars?!

He's going to get pummeled by the SJW mob.

312 Ann Barnhardt and others argue that he is still Pope and that Frankie is an antipope.

Unfortunately Benedict / Ratzinger has said nothing against the Frankie-Goes-To-Hollywood Papacy.

Wish I knew why Raztinger accepted the job in the first place. Did he foresee that he was going to be succeeded by a nincompoop?

Maybe his plan was to sit in the chair for a few years, then let an antipope sit there, wait for him to keel over or get impeached for heresy, and then come back and pretend the antipope didn't happen and that all his papal proclamations are, er, bull.

Sort of like what Jewish legend and the Qur'an say about Solomon.

Wonder whatever happened to those. Think the reports said 5,000, unissued (surely Soviet 1945 captures later sent to Syria in the 60s/70s as military aid).

A good actual story, or a decent fictional one, could have been built around high-end arms collectors commissioning some former spec ops guys to go in and get those guns from amidst the chaos.

Is it another case, like the NFL, and Comics, and other lesser endeavors; that The Church is trying to expand it's membership by appealing to those outside it but alienating the existing core by apparently taking it for granted?

Vatican II did a lot of good things (Mass in local language for one), but sometimes I think it went too far to encourage a too touchy-feely catechism.

I'm not sure. It does seem to be a relatively recent trend. It reeks of "style" over substance and is used way too much, to the point where it seems like it's what they're actually showcasing... their "amazing voice" as in their range and how many times they can shift in a couple of bars... rather than the song and it's execution. Here's a word of advice singers- If that is your selling point, it's a shit song and the warbling won't disguise it. Enhance the song, don't use it as an excuse to show off your fluttering technique.

Back then (WW I), armies still did massed rifle fires by entire units (platoon or company) to engage area targets.

When you are shooting waaaay out there, you are essentially pointing in a direction and using the sight to elevate the piece to get the range desired. The soldiers might be told to basically "aim at that hill, 2000 yards".

My most epic winter drive story, one of a few cars behind a snow-plow (road was closed just behind us) going up over Berthoud Pass in a blizzard. Friend's borrowed car - defroster didn't work, so that added to the excitement.

But coldest was up in Quebec (of course), and Vermont, one time (skied at 5 degrees - no wind - snow squeaked in a funny way).

What is happening in Mynamar is so sad. That country fought to become a democracy for 55 years. They were under military rule and headed toward being another North Korea, and then suddenly all their efforts bore fruit and they dramatically changed.

They are such a young democracy, and they have fought so hard, and the Buddhists don't want the Muslims there. Even though I think it was a peaceful sect - Rohanyi or something. But then there was vandalism of some sort & the whole thing combusted.

But the country Muslims have been pushed into doesn't want them either.

So you have this new democracy & President trying to get a handle on all this. Since solid democracies in the West can't handle the Islam multicultural problem, it's awfully hard to think how a new democracy can handle it.

I've such sympathy for the President. For the country. I don't think how the Muslims esp. women & children were treated was right. But I also understand a people who just won a democracy after a 55 year hell under military rule doesn't want to lose that. And they are seeing Western Europe dissolve.

30 police stations? I believe it. Since Sweden was welcoming & yet has some 55 no-go zones & have had to close police stations, it's not a stretch to imagine it.

You don't say?

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

441 I've said it before and I'll say it again - because it's the simple truth - all threats from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with control of the gulf oil fields. Without those fields (that the arabs just stole in the forced nationalizations of the 50s and 60s) the APM world has no power of any sort. None. They will be totally neutered.

We can retake those fields and render the APM world totally defanged - which would be about as bloodless as anything ... or we can let them keep the stolen fields, make ridiculously dangerous threats of themselves to civilization around the world thanks to the huge powers they derive from being in control of much of the lifeblood of the civilized world, and, eventually, be forced into doing some very bloody stuff to put an end to it.

After weeks of silence on the violence against Rohingyas, Mynamar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi delivered a controversial speech earlier this week in which she defiantly said that she does not fear international scrutiny.

The leader has asked for patience from the international community, refuting claims that more than half of the Rohingya villages had been destroyed.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner drew widespread criticism for her remarks, with many seeing it as reluctance to address the crisis and her government's role in it.

You guys have certainly done an admirable job - and done it while Barky was trying everything he could to kill the fracking industry and help his muzzie allies ... but the gulf fields are still very sensitive strategic resources that only the dumbest people would let the most savage lunatics steal control of. And the arabs and the persians don't even give a shit about the fields for themselves (outside of the power they get from them). In the Iran-Iraq war they were blowing those fields up as fast as they could, and then the other hussein showed what the arabs care about oil when dumped over 40 million barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every well in Kuwait on fire.

Yes, you frackers have been awesome but the fields still need to be retaken from the savages (who are just as happy to destroy the fields as they are to destroy us).

472 I have been paying attention to Mynamar for years, i have seen the video recordings smuggled out. I have a heart for them. National criticism...fuck off world.

After the Arab Spring, when Lara Logan was surrounded and sexually assaulted by 200 men, it was the Muslim women who saved her. At first, I was upset they did not intervene sooner. But then I realized they put their lives on the line to save her. A stranger. The crowd could have turned on them. It was less than 10 women I believe. And they protected her.

Again, I hate Islam. I want no more muslims in this country, and I'd like to evict most. Little girls are being sexually mutilated every day & a blind eye is turned b/c Islam. It's evil & should be prosecuted. What happened in Europe is happening here, and my heart has been breaking for years.

508 interesting nfl post at 4chan:

Work with the NFL; some inside information of the shitstorm currently going on.

1.
Some NFL teams have been looking into firing players who are pulling
this protest shit. But their lawyers have all told them, while they can
do it, the fired players could then take them to court and win. The
49ers were among these teams, who have consulted their lawyers; hence
why CK never got fired. Their lawyers told them it was cheaper to just
let him do his bullshit.

2. Goodell knows he has fucked up big
time, but can't do anything except tacitly let the teams blacklist
players who pull this shit. Goodell and most of the coaches, know that
the players throwing these tantrums have them by the balls. The player's
union has sided with them, creating more problems, and you have hate
machines like ESPN further making it impossible to do anything to reign
players in.

3. That being said, Goodell is seriously considering
the "Activism Month" promotion some of the players are pushing, to try
and reign in the shit storm that has been unleashed. Basically
officially sanction November for players to do this kind of crap, but in
a tightly controlled way orchestrated by the league to keep some sense
of control over it.

Oh, I know that.

I guess the point I'm making is that there is a big difference between muslims in name only and jihadi.

From the 70's to the 90's, a lot of muslims came to America to escape the horrific regimes in the middle east. They wanted no part of that life, and consequently, came to America and:

1. opened a middle eastern restaurant
2. opened a gas station
3. worked in a convenience store
4. opened a middle eastern grocery store

Note the "work" portion of it, rather than "stay on the dole for life."

Also.. the vast majority of muslim businesses in the area celebrate Christmas, Easter as well as American holidays.

John Rhys-Davies, one true Welshman. He also made the show 'Sliders' fun while he was on it. Rhys-Davies is everywhere, but he's so good at being an actor, you never know it.

Rhys-Davies being 'everywhere' reminds me of another actor, Saul Rubinek. Now there's an actor everyone recognizes when they see him, though he's never really been a 'star'. But he's 'everywhere', too, 'Warehouse 13', 'Unforgiven', 'Leverage', The Jesse Stone movies. So many good roles in a lot of good productions.

534 The Hanafi strain of Islam which is dominant in Bengal (them again, I know, I'm kind of a Razib Khan fanboy) and used to be dominant in the Sunni parts of Iraq were often converted Nestorians. They observed Christian holidays as Islamic saint days. There was a celebration of Zechariah from the New Testament for instance. I remember Salam Pax's blog mentioned this.

Also the Qur'an itself in sura 19, as well as the Dome of the Rock, seems to approve of blessing Jesus "the day he was born [Christmas], the day he died/dies [Good Friday] and the day he is raised alive [Good Friday again - hey, they's still Muslim]".

For the last 14 years I was employed, if I had done an over the top political statement, HR would have given me fifteen minutes to clear out my desk. If I would have been a team owner, those asshats would have had fifteen minutes to clear out their lockers. You want to be an SJW? Good. Do it on your own time, not mine. All the COW shit has the owners and the organization running scared. And they will destroy the brand to kowtow to them. (I can't remember who came up with COW, and I can't remember what exactly it means, but I liked it. It was on a previous thread)
I sent an e-mail to the NFL telling them as a Vietman era vet that they could basically go f*ck themselves. Until they put on a uniform and put their asses on the line, they can all go suck a bag of dicks.

540 534 The Hanafi strain of Islam which is dominant in Bengal (them again, I know, I'm kind of a Razib Khan fanboy) and used to be dominant in the Sunni parts of Iraq were often converted Nestorians.

Actually not ... a bad idea.

Later the Portuguese showed up in Kerala, where they had Christians literate in Aramaic and in several Tamil dialects. The Portuguese were horrified that they were "doing Christianity wrong" and went and taught them Portuguese-flavoured Catholicism. Doctrinally just about exactly what Nestorians have been teaching the whole bloody time BUT THIS TIME IN LATIN!!

So a lot of books got burned and the Christians in Kerala ended up in schisms amongst themselves. Because once the Portuguese were gone who the hell over there spoke any Latin?

Also some links I'd followed from there, and from looking stuff up. I wanted to find ancient Tamil references to Nestorian doctrine and witnesses to early Islam. I wasn't successful apparently because the Portuguese burned most of the texts :^(

I would have to disagree 1000% with that - as pertains to British colonization. The colonized societies reaped benefits that they NEVER could have gotten on their own. It's only their own fault that if they didn't take advantage of what they were shown ... but some societies just can't handle civilization, which is part of why they weren't civilized to begin with.

That was true of most Americans. Joseph Farrah, from World Net Daily, started out as trying to educate Americans on the difference between Christian and muslim arabs (which most weren't really aware of). Farrah did very important work on explaining all that, and he was one of the only people doing so at the time, that he is rarely recognized for.

Christians are nuts for this. Moslems are wolves in sheeps clothing. They have stretched verses out of context to justify what they are doing. Christ was a lot of things, stupid was never one of them. I know of no verses that say if a people want to rape & destroy you, invite them in. There has been an over focus on some areas of the bible at the expense of others & Christ's example as a rebel & fighter & His words of warning.

569 So on a Catholic note...

Instapundit has a link to an article that talks about how a group of Roman Catholic clergy and lay scholars signed and issued a "Filial Correction" to Pope Francis, claiming that the Pope is "propagating heresies" (not that the signers have noted that they are not in a position to judge whether the Pope himself is guilty of heresy).

The focus of the whole thing is apparently "Francis' exhortation on marriage and the family, Amoris Laetitia". Among other things, the letter claims that the Pope has advocated a position that "Catholics should sometimes accept adultery as compatible with being a follower of Christ."

Can anyone provide some insight on this? In particular, what exactly is the Amoris Laetitia?
