Notre Dame De Paris And The Flower Market
Marie Francois Firmin Girard

SheHe is a favorite of mine, and herhis technique is just stunning. I hear shehe makes great sammiches too! [For a dude. Correction courtesy of IllTemperedCur]

Seriously, the confluence of glorious, architect-quality drawing and the realistic yet gentle portrayal of the path along the Seine is delightful, and clearly lands on the "art" side of the line.

For those of you who prefer different art, here is something for you that should be less taxing on your artistic aesthetic.

"it seems Illinois is $16 billion in the hole and still digging. No word of when they'll emerge in Beijing."

Fun fact: the city of Pekin, IL (across the Illinois River from Peoria) allegedly was so named because its 1830s era founders (mistakenly) believed that it was directly on the other side of the globe from Pekin/Peking -- the name English speaking people gave to Beijing in the 19th century. Its high school sports teams were nicknamed the Chinks up until (I think) the 1970s; now they are called the Dragons.

You might like a book called "My Name is Red" by Orhan Pamuk. It is about, among other things, a struggle in medieval Islam as to what kind of art is permitted.

There were strictures on subject matter and things had to be miniatures and our protagonist is trying to break out and do original art. It's an allegory, of course, but it's quite good.

196 136 In my daily email from the NYT, an article says that if only Hillary had offered every American a check each month (guaranteed annual income) she could have beaten Trump....

For $10K a month, I'da considered voting for Her Heinous.
Posted by: BackwardsBoy at September 20, 2017 09:56 AM (tRaq7)

If everyone received $10k per month, the cost of goods and services would increase astronomically, mas would revenue from taxes, so that within one or two production cycles, the money would be nearly worthless.

It would have the effect of both impoverishing the masses and exploding the size of government.

I'm surprised Hillary didn't offer it.

210 Update: After publication Reason received comment from Miami-Dade county, with the following explanation:

We were looking to advise residents of the following hazards on their properties that they may not have been aware of, but that pose a life safety threat: damaged structures that rendered them unsafe, unsecured pools with no barriers, electrical hazards (down lines, damaged meters) and gas hazards (damaged meters). If any of these hazards were found, our inspectors gave out a safety notice, which is neither a notice of violation warning nor a citation. That means there is no fine attached. The safety notices given to property owners identify the hazard, steps that should be taken to correct the hazard, and who to contact for additional information.

Like with Somalia, where *all* sides were muslim, except the tiny Christian minority that was wiped out, global media chose to pretend that decades of violence never happened. Their "compassion" is perfectly satisfied to let millions suffer and die if there isn't a narrative-friendly scaoegoat to pin the problems on.

It's just a notice.

I've dealt with the cream of the crop for totalitarianism, OSHA. They don't give out a warning notice. It costs a business hundreds of dollars per hour as they nit-pick around, writing up everything under the sun.

Newman is delish in that photo. I met him and JoAnn Woodward a couple of times in the 1980s at Kenyon College. He is an alumnus and she was involved in the Kenyon Festival Theater, which ran out of funds after a few years because it was run by a bunch of ignorant liberals.

They were proto-Marxists, there's that. In the 20th century, as far as importing Islam goes, all of Europe has been guilty of importing it, not just them. I think the cause of most of the world's problems was Hitler. People were rightly horrified by what he did, but a lot of people who were never associated with anything Nazi felt a misplaced sense of guilt and decided that western civilization needed to be destroyed, or at least diluted. Hitler's error did not so much cause a reaction that was a *correction* as it did a reaction that was simply another error, equally as bad.

242 This is one lovely, pleasant work of art. The level of detail in the spires and other stonework is intriguing. 249 The comment track on the Slapshot DVD is done by the Hanson brothers. They hardly talk about the movie, or movie-making, and mostly about who could skate. Some of the actors couldn't skate at all and were shot from the knees up. The various goons from the other teams were actual minor league hockey players.

Michael Ontkean played for UNH, so he could skate, and apparently hated the Hansons as much as his character did.

Paul Newman could skate. The Hansons said that as high praise.

267 Hmmm, won't let me copy/paste the text. Needless to say, phrases like:

"Just when everyone thought we had a breather from fighting efforts to cut and cap Medicaid, things have changed once again in the Senate. Medicaid opponents could bring another piece of health care legislation to the Senate floor before the end of September."

"It is crucial that Senate Leaders not bring this bill before the Senate. Please contact your lawmakers today and ask them to oppose this ill-conceived bill."

A lot of our common understanding of history comes from people celebrating or defending and even justifying atrocities carried out.

History is never that simple, and any history of the French Catholic church that rests on the narrative spun by the Jacobins and their adherents should be suspected from word one.
Most of the histories of the Catholic church in Europe are heavily flavored by various pissing from socialists through the last 200 years. Actually the last 500 years including the hatchet jobs starting during the reformation.

Just to point out that these histories have an odd odor at times.

The simple and damning answer is that that would be multiculturalism without a goal, and therefore pointless. Their lips say they want multiculturalism, but it is something they reject out of hand unless they are getting something for it.

Promotion of strife against their political enemies, depredation thereof, and alignment of global politics is one such aim, getting everything they want cheaply is another.

It is clearly *not* an intrinsic good as borne out by their actions. Like everything else, a lie to cover malign intent.

Instapundit linked an article after Harvey about whether L.A. could learn anything from the rescue response that could be applied to earthquakes. The author was, probably legitimately, concerned about the lack of "social capital" in California cities, but I think it goes beyond that. With flooding the water goes away again eventually, in fact I was astounded at how fast it went away everywhere but the dam release areas, but that doesn't happen with earthquakes. You are also right that the advance notice, so that the assistance is available to roll in the instant it's safe to do so, is a big deal as well.

357 "I think something other than the two world wars had to be going on beneath the surface to explain Europe's emerging suicidality."

Oswald Spengler, "Decline of the West", 1912. He saw it while it was just beginning, explained why it was happening, and predicted in detail how it would unfold over the next couple of centuries. Everyone in academia hates his work, and has little good to say about it - because he was right, and because everything that has happened over the last century has proven him right.

He was one of the first I know of to say, in a convincing and well reasoned argument, that the Islamic cultures were mortal enemies of western culture and would always seek to destroy it, until one or the other was finally gone. He also said that this was not really about religion at all, except to the extent that religion reflects culture, but was due to the way that Islamic Culture at its core was created to be the antithesis of Western Culture, and always would be. It is a conflict that can never resolved except by death. (see why everyone hates him?)

My pastor, a couple of months back, had as a Westminster Confession of Faith discussion topic the laws on consanguinity, particularly in the original scriptural sources. So many relationships spelled out as a no-no (grandchild, grandparent), some of which seem to strain credulity... until you get to things like Morgan Freeman discovered which aren't even on the list.

365 357. One of the most astonishing facts about this modern world is that the western nations (and Russia, idiot stepdaughter of the west) more or less had the whole enchilada. ____________________________________

Along those lines, I think all of the best and brightest Germans were killed in World War I and there were no strong or politically courageous Germans with the guts to stand against Hitler and the Nazis.

France and Britain suffered the same generational loss of young brave men and their sin was to become socialists.

Poland did as well in World War II as a result of the Nazi and Soviet purges of the officer corps, academics and businessmen.

In their clownish attempt to prevent misguided national sentiment from enacting horrors, and to ensure the priority of interpersonal care, they've eroded shared English comity, brought about a forced loyalty to tumors on the state in the form of the NHS and BBC, and nearly eliminated intrapersonal fellow-feeling and connection to the past and tradition.

The exact conditions for a Weimar-style revolution and socialist takeove by mere lip service to something better and tradition. Irony, a bit of it.

388 Funny, that view is from the left bank, across the Seine to the south from Notre Dame. But the Quai aux Fleurs (and formerly the Marche aux Fleurs or flower market) are actually on the island, facing the right bank to the north with no water between them and Notre Dame. In other words, the flower market is on the wrong side of the cathedral and the wrong side of the river. I guess an artist can play with composition as he wants.
