16 Late today, but I want to comment about a thread below. A woman from Honduras snuck into Florida a couple of years back. IIRC she had her child born in a Miami hospital. The child was a Zika baby. Because the child was born in the US it has citizenship. Because the child is crippled it now qualifies for SSDI. So now the taxpayers of the US will be responsible for that child's care for the rest of its life, and the mother will likely be eligible for welfare for the rest of its life.
I really don't want to sound heartless, but as a nation we cannot care for every country's welfare cases.

32 Moore, to me, is like Alcee Hastings, though on the Repub side of the ledger. An embarrassment. Removed from the AL SC bench in 2003 for ignoring a federal court order, he took a couple of losing swings at other AL offices before getting reelected to the AL SC, a job he didn't manage to hang onto long the second time around either. Suspended for ignoring yet another federal court ruling, he resigned finally in April this year and decided he wants to be a Senator, a job he ain't fucked up yet.

Strange's biggest drawback is the GOPe likes him. That's a black mark in my book. Trump's support? A mystery. Maybe he will explain it at the rally.

47 RE: anchor babies and illegals-- my guess is that if you show up at a hospital right now, you'll be treated better as an "undocumented citizen" and not required to pay for any treatment, no matter how expensive. However, if you're a citizen and on an Obamacare high premium policy, say hello to bankruptcy.

Conversely, I think it's easy for illegals to get social benefits, but if you're a "white citizen" it's much, much more difficult.

So... white Americans must work to support illegals and minorities, no questions asked. We're white slaves.

51 "Can anyone provide a rational reason for the original restriction on healthcare companies operating across state lines?"

History. Which often explains things that don't make rational sense.

In a time when federalism meant something, the Federal government got into the banking business in the 1800s but never had the same compelling interest to get into the insurance business, which remained a state prerogative. In time, the special interests in keeping insurance a state-by-state thing have only gotten stronger.

Health insurance is no longer Insurance, and the Federal involvement in healthcare is so extensive, that I see Healthcare Insurance as an exception to any States Rights argument. Only the crazy "Conservative" Purists will disagree.

State's rights. State insurance commissioners can require insurers to meet differing levels of standards, especially including financial standards. If you force states to accept all insurers from other states, you will essentially federalize the industry. Insurers on the federal approved list will be forced down the states' throats.

This is not a move that inspires a lot of confidence for me. More power accrues to the feds. Eventually, the feds will abuse that power.

They always do. That's the downside imho.

From wiki:

Moore was elected to the position of Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in 2001, but removed from his position in November 2003 by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments commissioned by him from the Alabama Judicial Building, despite orders to do so by a federal court.

And:

Moore was again elected Chief Justice in 2013, but was suspended in May 2016, for directing probate judges to continue to enforce the state's ban on same-sex marriage despite the fact that it had been overturned.

Like it or not, same-sex marriage is law of the land. The SC has said so (wrongly, imho, but still...).

She was utterly hapless. She could not take care of herself. Could not even clean herself. Got beset by fleas. God bless our mutt, he somehow boded with her, occasionally picking her up by the nape, and licking her over, but I recall a bath we gave her when the water turned red from the blood of all those fleas sucking at her. She was not long for this world.

91 Can the Washington Generals gin up Democrats to go vote in the primary and push Strange over the edge?

I'm unsure that tactic would work in this race, given that Moore hasn't been a Confederate nostalgist as far as I know. (Like McDaniel was. Which gave Thad "Mmm... sheep" Cochran his primary angle.) Also Moore got where he is from religion, which is important to black Democrats too.

I think the Washington Generals are going to lose, and this time not in the way they want.

188 To people wondering why health insurance cannot be sold across state lines: It is stated in the Constitution. Insurance companies pre-dated the USA and were its biggest industry, underwriting shipping for everything that came here or went. Constitution says "only states may regulate insurance." 192 I live in Alabama.

Some years back, Judge Moore, while Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, snuck a large granite "10 Commandments" monument into the Supreme Court building one night. The ensuing stink allowed the MSM to paint Alabama as a land of mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging whacko fundamentalists. I for one did not appreciate that, and for that I would oppose him for further office from fear of him pulling another self-aggrandizing grandstanding gesture.

Having said that, Mitch McConnell came out in favor of Luther Strange. Down here, that's the kiss of death. I don't care that trump endorses Strange. I'll vote for Moore just to stick my finger in McConnell's eye.

Maybe Trump is backing Strange because McConnell recommended him, knowing that Strange is now a long shot, and his loss will then embarrass McConnell. "Hey, I backed your man and he lost. Remind me what good you are as senate leader..."

194 I'm getting to the point where I'd prefer to have Pence in the White House.
===

Oh yeah.
signed into law the state's first pre-K funding program and steered funds toward infrastructure improvements.
Pence found himself in the national spotlight and on shaky ground after signing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in March 2015. Intending to protect business owners who didn't want to participate in same-sex weddings, Pence instead encountered resistance from moderate members of his party and corporations that threatened to pull out of the state, and he was forced to alter the bill to provide exemptions for LGBT communities. Similarly, he came under fire in the spring of 2016 for signing a bill that prohibits abortions when the fetus has a disability.

TOTALLY different.

A government employee for 12 years in Congress and 5 years as a governor who altered bills due to political pressure. No doubt we certainly are looking at a completely different situation.

Let's put the experienced bureaucrat in charge so the bitchy little girls can get what they want.

After he wins he can flip the Alabama Supreme Court the bird all the live long day. Twice elected to the court. He'll get elected and re-elected and re-elected . . . Need backbone in the Senate.

253 That doesn't make much sense, at least not if Moore wins. Trump could do as well by not endorsing Strange at all and just taking a hands-off approach.
Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at September 17, 2017 09:02 PM (J2oJa)

If Moore wins then Trump gets a Senator who will vote for his agenda even if there's personal dislike.

With the GOPe, a lot of this opposition is fueled not just by ideology but by the belief of the establishment that Trump is beneath them. They don't want acknowledge that he's the leader of their party. Having to admit that he owed his position in the Senate to Trump would make Strange a bit more compliant when it comes to Trump's agenda. It's pretty standard politics.

Not really nine-dimensional at all. Trump is expending political capital to help Strange, which means Strange owes Trump. However, it's not a big risk for Trump, because Moore is likely to support much of Trump's agenda, even if there's personal animosity over the primary.

326 Does the application for a visa to travel to America include the
statement, "As a citizen of a nation other than the USA, I agree not to
seek citizenship for any child born on US soil for the duration of my
visa, or for any extended stay beyond the limit of my visa"
==

Short answer? No. But the class of visa is SUPPOSED to control that.

An unskilled work visa is an NIV . Non-immigrant visa. No citizenship should be implied or derived until the immigrant returns home and gets in line.

A tourist visa is an NIV. A Business visa is an NIV.

Spouse visa is an Immigrant Visa.
So is the "E" visa Professionals Holding Advanced Degrees and Persons of Exceptional Ability , "Best and Brightest".

Immigration law functions when it is used.

It isn't used.

And his grandson Benjamin Bache ran a newspaper, the Aurora, which fought hard against John Adams' attempt to turn the Presidency into some sort of elected monarchy whose office-holder could never be criticised.

The 1998 book "American Aurora" was all about this, but for some reason it didn't get a lot of "retweets" as we'd say today. Robert Spencer has brought it up again in "Complete Infidel's Guide To Free Speech".

Now imagine Trump having to deal directly with a newly minted Senator Roy Moore, who is an absolutely rock solid socon and who sticks like a steel barnacle to his principles even when howling hellstorms erupt.

This has to be made to happen if only for the comedic potential.

Yep. Most of the 90's is 20 years and more now. As you point out, in the mid 70's, that meant the pioneering rock n roll records. Oldies. Also, stylistically, the 90's has more in common with the 70's, than with the music (or "music") of today. It's not just time, but sound, also.

365 "for my part, I wanted to give Trump the benefit of the doubt"

I gave him none such. Never was tempted to.

I tend to refer to Trump conversationally as "President Hobson", as in the classical "Hobson's choice", which isn't a choice in any meaningful sense of the word.

I thought the guy was unstable, unpredictable, philosophically unmoored, dangerously ill-informed, and temperamentally unfit. On that last point, we just HAD a pathological clinical narcissist in the Oval Office for two terms. Another one? Oh sweet Jeebus. Someone with some healthy humility would have been a welcome change.

But... a choice between President Hillary Clinton and President Donald Trump, despite all of his bigly manifest faults, wasn't a choice at all. It goes to show that no matter what a rolling dumpster fire Trump was, that I and a whole bunch of other people simply wouldn't consider either voting for his opponent or sitting it out. And here we are now.

At the end of the day, I increasingly figure this will be a second George W. Bush presidency. To wit, one which then results in the election of someone from the opposing party who would previously have been viewed as too unthinkably odd and extreme to even be considered at all as a primary candidate, much less in the general election. Say hello to President Kamala Harris, or worse. And then that's the ball game.

So your options are limited, like mine are limited. You can support candidates to Trump's Right. You can write articles proposing policies which Trump can take. You might even point out a specific bad policy (like DACA) and suggest ways we can make a stink about it.

But bringing up shit from three decades ago and running Trump down personally... again, what does this accomplish?

I get it. For what it's worth, I've always been happy with Brownell's. I even called with a question one time and spoke with an actual human being who apparently was a native speaker of the English language.

How come I get an error message "post failed" when I try to use those adorable little (/s) smiley face symbols?

Does that suck or WHAT ? Why are the damn things THERE if I can't USE them to mock people, huh?

Social injustice, that is.

409 Tourqewrench, I love your comments. But...

There's a difference between having political opinions and desiderata and seeing the difference to coalition building to what's actually achievable.

For what it's worth, Fearless Leader Ace actually sucks at this too.

But I never suspect that you do for it the web traffic.

413 401 One day, every state could decide for itself if two
men could "marry", the next day it is an abomination against the law,
without the citizens even voting on it.

If the Constitution produces that kind of outcome perhaps it isn't worth defending.

Posted by: MAGA

In such a case, the states could convene an Article 5 convention, and pass an Amendment. Or, we can continue electing conservatives to Congress and the Presidency, and eventually the balance of the SC will shift, and so can the law of the land.

There are remedies, but they are painfully slow.

I really don't want to sound heartless, but as a nation we cannot care for every country's welfare cases. >>

Former welfare caseworker here. Actually the child would qualify for SSI, not SSDI...unless he or she worked the required 40 quarters for Social Security Retirement, Disability or Survivor's. SSI is currently $733/month (unless there is some modifying factor), plus it covers medical care and the recipient usually gets food stamps.

I have what I think is a worse example. I had a case of a child receiving medical assistance in spite of the fact that every single member of the family was here illegally. Usually people claim that this is impossible. However, the child had a disease or condition (can't remember now) that rendered all of his care to be necessary or he would die. This is the same loophole that pays for a pregnant woman to have care in a hospital while she gives birth, even if she is undocumented. I remember speaking to an incredulous health care worker and saying, yes, you understood that correctly. One can't help but feel sorry for the child, but sheesh! If every seriously ill child came here, even without permission, well...I guess we'd be on the hook for them.
