Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 09-16-2017

chess helps your brain.jpg(click for larger version)

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a food fight on a Saturday afternoon. Unless you're starving.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170916 - Problem 1.jpg
r3rn2/p7/3qp2k/1p5n/3P1p1p/1PPQ1P2/P1B2P2/6RK w - - 0 1

1.Qh7+ Nxh7
2.Rg6#

1.Rg6+ Nxg6 2.Qxg6# is also mate, but Black isn't forced to capture the rook. Ibstead of capturing he could do this

1...Kh7
2.Rf6+ Kh8
3.Rh6+ Kg8

...and there's no easy path to a mate.

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20170916 - Problem 2.jpg
6k1/3q1pp1/3b3B/4n3/8/6Q1/5PP1/5RK1 b - - 0 1

1...Ng6!

Blocks the mating threat and now two White pieces are attacked and so he'll lose one of them.

2.Qe3 gxh6
3.Qxh6

Instead of that, I came up with this:

1... Nf3+
2. Qxf3 gxh6

Which doesn't win material. But it does stop the mate.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170916 - Problem 3.jpg
4r2k/pR5p/6p1/4b3/3B4/2P2K2/1P6/8 w - - 0 1

1.Rb8! Rxb8

1...Rg8 loses to 2.Bxe5#

2.Bxe5+ Kg8
3.Bxb8 and White's material advantage should be enough to win

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170916 - Problem 4.jpg
r1b4k/ppp2Bb1/6Pp/3pP3/1qnP1p1Q/8/PPP3P1/1K1R3R w - - 0 1

1.Qd8+! Qf8

Not 1...Bf8 because 2.Rxh6+ Kg7 3.Rh7#

2.Rxh6+ Bxh6
3.Qf6+ Qg7
4.Rh1 Bh3

Or 4...Qxf6 5.exf6 Nd2+ 6.Kc1 Nb3+ 7.axb3 Bh3 8.Rxh3 f3+ 9.Rxh6# is an alternate line.

5. Rxh3 Nd2+
6. Kc1 Nb3+
7. axb3 Qxf6
8. exf6 Re8
9. Rxh6# 1-0

Endgame of the Week (576)

20170916 - Endgame.jpg
6r1/p1P2p2/3P3p/8/P7/5k2/8/7K b - - 0 1

This is one of those problems I would never be able to see OTB, but only by working through the position a few times. Maybe a GM could see it, though.

White is about to queen one of his advanced pawns, but his King is positioned poorly. Black takes advantage of this by playing

1...Kf2!

This sets up a mating threat. If now 2.d7, then 2...Rg5 followed by 3...Rh5#.

2.Kh2!

Now Black can't play 2...Rg5 because 3.c8=Q Rh5+ 4.Qh3 or instead 3.Kh3 f5 4.Kh4 and Black has pretty much hosed himself. Instead, Black plays

2...f5!

This moves cuts off g4 as an escape square for White's king and also blocks the c8-h3 diagonal in case of White moving c8=Q.

3.Kh3

Trying to escape via h5

3...Rg1

Oops, that won't work, let's try attacking the rook

4.Kh2 Rg5

There's no stopping 5...Rh5#.

My chess app saw all that and instead played 3.c8=Q Rxc8 4.Kh3 Rd8 which avoids the immediate mate but he loses most of his material doing so.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

One of the few things I remember from high school literature was an anonymous poem:

My Love in her attire doth show her wit,

For Winter, Spring, and Summer.
No beauty she doth miss 5
When all her robes are on;
But Beauty's self she is
When all her robes are gone

Nope, nope. All I remembered was the last two lines:
"But Beauty's self she is
When all her robes are gone"

And I looked it up.

Speaking of mental atrophy (in the opening graphic) I think Socrates was *against* written language, because he thought it would cause mental atrophy, because people would no longer get in the habit of memorizing things. I'm starting to think he may have had a point, especially with the rise of the internet. It's getting towards the point where if you need to know how to do something with some tool (say Sybase or perl or whatever), you don't really need to make an effort to memorize it. Just look it up when you need it.

True. Though it's more a swap, bishop for pawn, as queen can move to h row and capture the pawn. That evens the odds up quite a bit then overall. I predict a draw for this game, assuming no bonehead moves.

No, no. Those are only for the bad kind of war crimes.

250 Winners don't usually put themselves on trial.

Someone forgot to tell that Spanish "judge" who wanted to drag General Pinochet to court for his "war crimes". Wonder he never went after the Castro brothers.

And all those Warsaw Pact devils were never tried for anything by the West.

Although the Romanians had the correct solution.

This speaker at the Women's march seems pretty sadistic. Donna Hylton:

255 220 ---......These might be extreme cases, but doesn't it show on a scale that gays are more likely to be extreme than lesbians?......

----------------------------------
Well, MEN are more likely to be extreme than women when it comes to that sort of thing, whether they are gay Dahmers or hetero Bundys.

So yeah, I also find it hard to believe that women of any orientation would be as physically violent as men.

But I hear a lot of stories from ER nurses and clerks about lesbo fights. One week a woman is seen for injuries. A couple of weeks later it's her partner that is seen. Or sometimes both come in after the same incident. It sounds like nasty, mutual fighting more than regular DV. I dunno.

2. Qxf3 gxh6

Which doesn't win material. But it does stop the mate.

The pawn could capture the f3, leaving the mate in play.

264 I'm so proud of kid the elder right now. Her younger sister called her, waking her up from a nap, to ask for help with her math homework.
So she's been helping her with it, and then started teaching her derivatives, which is the next chapter. All while still in her bed, over video call.

Apparently younger sister 's math teacher is not very good.

270 In problem 2, instead of 2.Qe3 White could play 2.Rd1 Bxg3 3.Rxd7 Baf2+ 4.Kxf2 gxh6. Probably still a draw?

272 #2. If Ng6, how does Black meet Rd1?
If bxf3 then Rxd7, and both the White and Black bishops are en prise. But if Black doesn't play bxf3 then there doesn't seem to be any way to defend the bishop. It looks like the best option then for Black is gxh6 but after Rxd6 White maintains the material advantage.
Or am I missing something obvious? It wouldn't be the first time.

275 Problem 1, why is Rg6 mate ? Kh7 is an escape, the bishop is masked by the rook.

My line was rg6+, if Kh7 then Rh6++, and then Qg6+ if Kg7
