Gargoyle: an olive-flavored mouthwash

I hate to break it to Misanthropic Humanitarian, but Coffee means "a person who is coughed upon".

These are new "fun words" from a Washington Post Yearly Reader Contest. Of course, WaPo is pretty good at supplying new meanings for words right in their news stories.

Doing anything interesting this weekend? Made up any new words recently?

37 So I was about to retell my vegetarian dish story when the thread suddenly got spiked. I blame Willow. So as I was about to say...

Many years ago Milady and I went to the family reunion. Big gathering in SW Missouri, with mostly manly men and womanly women, and some hipsters.

My younger sister came to us and decried that there was some pot of "mystery meat" on the grill. We said, oh, no, that's ours - it's BBQ tofu. Sis (being the type) hurried back to the grill to get some, but the cowboys had already devoured it.

We realized soy was not people food long time ago, but that was really good BBQ. Even the cowboys thought so.

I don't think it's ever necessary to make a federal case (literally) out of any of this sort of stuff. Use common freakin' sense.

If a kid says he can't/won't say the Pledge of Allegiance, then fine. Have the kid go sit somewhere quietly while the rest of us do. When the other students see him sitting over there by himself, peer pressure will start to gnaw at the situation until it resolves itself.

One way or another.

And I would damn well as a teacher in this classroom reinforce the concept that freedom, including the freedom of speech, means you have every right to express your beliefs as you see fit, but there WILL be order in MY classroom.

109 I received 3 mailers about the Luther Strange campaign yesterday. He's rolling in out of state bucks.

110 Grammie, if it helps, I don't have any problem with the pledge of allegiance vis-a-vis being a Christian. Saying the pledge doesn't mean you are putting country before God, it just means you are loyal to your country.

Growing up going to Catholic schools, we said it every day, with the addition of "God bless America" at the end. That's still the way we say it in our family.

Not so fast. Sometimes there truly are students who have thought things through on their own, and have come to a conclusion based upon their beliefs. I am thinking of my own daughter. She once took a position in 4th grade that would have resulted in her flunking a class, and she knew full well what would happen. She stuck to her guns, and I was proud of her for it, even though I found out way late in the game. It was her decision, not mine, because her line in the sand never even occured to me.

But we can also blame the 80% of Western critics who saw the special first-week screenings. These are failed film-students and humanities-majors; they always figure that if some nerd directs a film, that there HAS to be a point in there somewhere.

No. No, there wasn't. As Rex Reed explained in The Observer, and as Matt Drudge linked. Y'all been had.

193 adding the "under God" part to the pledge (1954) seems necessary, since it indicates our higher allegiance.

It was the Chalcedonian fix. (Chalcedon was the Church council which dialed orthodox Christianity back from Monophysitism.)

The Pledge was a fascist oath designed specifically to force loyalty to a united American banner. Putting "under God" in there neuters that intent.

Whether this results in an oath that still makes sense... well, I dunno. It's hard to explain Chalcedon too.

How about this: only make left turns at intersections where provision is made to accommodate them, like a turning bay with an advance green. Or from a one-way onto a one-way.

Just plan your route to avoid making turns that are dangerous, or unnecessarily delay you. Sometimes driving a mile or two further, and turning where it's easy, takes less time than doggedly taking the "shortest" route.

224 99---Horrifying decision by Clarence Thomas. I lost all respect for him.

Posted by: Mortimer - disappointed at September 16, 2017 12:22 PM (XkSQF)
-----------------------------------------
I don't think so. Let's not make the leftist mistake of confusing "good" or "wise" with "Constitutional."

We are dealing here with minors in a custodial (yes) situation who CANNOT have the full panoply of rights if any semblance of discipline is to be maintained.

For decades the Left has been using the federal courts to set policy on everything from dress codes to "fair" grading under the cover of "civil rights." The results have been disastrous.

Policies should be set by the local school board and, if they are stupid in conception or execution, they should be fought by the citizens. That is what government "by the people" means. It's not about whining to unelected, black-robed priests for a (inevitably leftist) diktat from Washington.

Thomas is a 10th-amendment guy and routinely comes down on the side of state and local authority, especially when it comes to education, a subject about which he is very well informed.

So, while I think there are decent arguments against this particular decision, I hardly think it "horrifying." I have taught in public schools and have the scars, actual physical scars, to remind me how horrifying the impact of the federal judiciary has been on school discipline.

It's complicated, as they say.

253 Actually, Margarita, "ideally" there would be a culture, and prevalent standards and mindset among parents, and a lack of liability-shakedown and social engineering lawlessness from the judiciary, and a prevalence of dedicated and competent non-unionized teachers, and ......

Because when all those things were mostly in place, as they were, not all THAT long ago, in some places at least, public education was usually just fine. Or excellent.

Public education created the country that won WWII, put man on the moon, won the Cold War, and built the greatest prosperity man has ever known. It also mixed social strata in a way that was uniquely American, and healthy, in many places.

And in pockets where some of those critical elements - or vestiges of them - are still in place, public education is still fine (sadly, almost only in the wealthiest jurisdictions). But overall - yep. Precipitous decline in standards and results. And parents fleeing the system, for good reason.

Educational decline is both symptom and cause of national decline.

It could be made to work, as long as the moral backbone of the society is strong enough. I'm thinking of the Puritans, who were the first to found public schools here.

But unfortunately, I agree, we can't have public schools, since liberals and unions will tend to corrupt them, and have thus ruined the possibility. It's like the public swimming pools that used to be a harmless way for communities to enjoy themselves have become unusable because of the "refugees" defecating in them and behaving in an unruly manner.

He and his wife were interested in purchasing a vineyard in Tuscany (where else). Part of the review process was tasting the wine produced by the estate. The wine passed his taste test and he signed the papers.

The next year after the harvest he tasted the wine that the grapes yielded and found it to be unsatisfactory. He called in the vineyard manager, whom he'd retained from the prior owner. "What happened to the grapes?? This year's vintage is terrible!"

Manager replied, "Signor Bono, the wine you tasted prior to purchasing the estate was not from our grapes."

"Right now, I'm just going to be honest, I pray for my city, man," Michael Brown said outside the courthouse Friday morning. "Because my people are tired of this." 307 I enjoy the good Sessions snoozing jokes as much as anyone, but I seriously hope he and his people and the WH are going to take serious action on the insurrection over immigration law.

The federal court injunction yesterday blocking the gambit tying law enforcement grants to cooperation with ICE just underlined how weak and unimpressive the public, known approach has been from the outset. The court might even be right - I doubt there is any conditionality, or all-purpose "public interest" language in such grants allowing post-facto moves.

Hard appropriations language conditioning federal funds on DHS/DOJ certification of full cooperation with ICE. Reciprocal, punitive foot-dragging or non-cooperation by fed law enfarcement with state/municipal authorities. Civil and criminal action against local/state officials directly tied to immigration lawlessness.

Not rocket science. Approaching the point where only logical conclusion is they don't really care, or are incompetent. And they have the political wind at their back on all of this, making it even more mysterious.
