Good afternoon folks. Welcome to the AoS Pet Thread. Put down the pooper-scoopers and take a break. Wash your paws, grab a T-R-E-A-T and a drink.

It appears the worst of the storm is over. However, our island is continuing to receive gusts of wind and is under a tornado watch. From all reports our island came through a lot better than we did last year during Matthew. There are reports of some flooding and trees are down across the island, but from what I heard, there is no catastrophic damage. Power is out and, according to Georgia Power, electricity will probably not be restored this week. The church and offices remain closed.

I have been in contact with most staff members and all are safe. I am planning on heading back tomorrow, depending on road conditions.

Please keep your eye on Hurricane Jose and pray for those who were slammed with this storm. We were spared from the worst when the storm moved up the west coast of Florida, but others were not as fortunate.

As evident by the photo above, we did have a visitor at church. A lot of Florida Gators have sought safety in Georgia and this one appears to be seeking some solace too. Thanks to *************** for the photo.

I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Stay safe and may God's blessings be with you.

Thanks Jane. Glad you GA Morons are safe and sound.

the Stubby one.jpg

This is Stubby,

Found on the double yellow lines of the hwy I live off of.... Cars off the road everywhere. They were all honking. He is mostly deaf so they had little effect on his behavior. I have 3 other found me dogs and will send you pics of them when I figure out how to. Love Ace and all of his merry morons and love to see the moron's pets

Jack is the Brindle whatever dog on the left. I call HER Jack because I cannot hear myself calling "here Anubis". White Dog (I didn't name her) on the right looking Japanese. She does this squint thing that cracks me up. No insult to Asians of any variety.

I am pamazon. (before Beso's made me wary of the name).

Some very lucky dogs. They sure seem to be happy and content.

Dimples.jpg

I'm a long time lurker and the Pet Thread is one of my favorite features - thanks so much for doing it!

Here are my two baby's: the Orange Tabby is BC which is short for Baby Cakes - long story how he, yes he, ended up with that name and not entirely my fault. To help ease the pain and masculinity crisis due to the name I call him BC. He was abandoned in the woods around my job 5 1/2 years ago. I saw him one day and we brought him in, took care of him and he chose me to be his human. I'd never had a pet of my own before but literally got the most loving cat ever in him. Here he is laying on a just-delivered-gift waiting on me to unload it so he can get in the box, natch.

The Calico is Dimples - named after one of my student's with autism who loved BC and knew him from his time at my work place. She was my neighbor's cat as she had adopted him. She was left all alone after he passed away a couple of years ago and I coaxed her in to my house to take care of her. She has been my sweet, funny girl ever since and I couldn't imagine not having her. She is very gifted at chasing and catching her own tail, she wants you to know.

Thanks for letting me share and again for the Pet Thread! - Cindi T.

Hope those cats know they have it made with you Cindi T.

Mostly lurker sometimes commentator WeeKreekFarmGirl especially in the gardening thread. This is our gang of four.

First up is our newest member, Gigi, who just turned one. Rescued from a box in downtown Phoenix. We've had her for 6.5 months. She was so shy and withdrawn when we got her, she didn't even know how to run. Now she likes to run all the time, much to my dismay at 6am before coffee.

Then there is Stinky, don't judge, when we got her she was very small for her age and was being pushed around by the other rescue cats, she only felt safe in the litter box and hung out there to be by herself so when we got her all she did was eat for the first four months, any time you touched her she would pass gas so we got to calling her Stinky and the name stuck.

Katie is the one "in jail" we have had her for 17 years, my husband says she is our only true "rescue" as we found her on the streets of Hollywood, 4 months old full of fleas, ticks and mites. Still going strong, we keep telling her "four more years" and she keeps doing it.

Then we have Binny, he was named Clooney at the animal rescue, we assume because he is salt and pepper handsome but my husband only calls him Clooney when he is bad, otherwise he is Binny which was short for Looney Bin when he was a puppy. He is my rockstar, guards me where ever I go and has saved the lives of small dogs by warding off rampant coyotes. He is with us 7 years tomorrow.

Lastly, a shout out to our dearly departed and greatly missed Trooper. Two years before he died he was diagnosed with a thyroid issue consequently his fur never grew back. He was destined to spend his final years looking like the first day back at school wearing doggie Ugg boots. Still a handsome boy though and made it to almost 17 years which is pretty darn good for an Akita/Border Collie mix. Loyal beyond belief.

12 After my cat died I couldn't bear to have another kitty in my house. I opted for parakeets. I found a beautiful key lime bird with yellow head. He didn't have any splotches or random markings, just green that shaded into a yellow head. I called him "Limey". I was so happy when I brought him home but then terribly regretted it. He looked so sad in the cage, all alone. He had none of the spark and activity I'd seen when he was with his flock. All of a sudden it dawned on me that these creatures were built to fly free.

I did get a companion for him and that perked him up. Then the craziest thing happened: one day I came home from work and there was another bird in the cage, for a total of three. My brother was living with me, I asked if he'd gotten the bird. He said he heard a chirping racket outdoors, so he went to investigate. This parakeet landed on his shoulder and wouldn't leave. So brother walked into the apartment with him, and placed him in the cage.

So Limey ended up with two buddies, the third one however was trying to steal his girl, which was the second bird I'd gotten from my friend who was breeding them.

All three have gone on to their heavenly reward, and I have to say I'll never get another companion bird because I can't stand seeing them caged. I'll stick to my wild bird feeders and enjoy the avian kingdom that way.

(no disrespect intended to pet bird lovers and owners, they are wonderful little animals to have near)

25 I had a cool male kitty, an orange and white tabby named Sherwood.
He learned how to open the screen door so he came and went as he pleased. One day we sent a visiting friend to the store for more beer. I guess he wanted company and no one wanted to go with him so he decided to take Sherwood with him. Sherwood stayed in the car while my friend went inside the store but when he came out he forgot about Sherwood being in the car and Sherwood got away. He put up lost posters but Sherwood was never seen again.

We have an uninvited house guest here, showed up last night after dark and barged right into the garage. He's a yellow lab, name of Floyd--according to the name tag on his collar.

He chewed his tie out rope in two, he was dragging 3 or 4 feet of it. Nice friendly dog, he and Liz are bestest buddies after just a few hours. Found the phone # plus address on his license but got an answering machine.

If they don't call back before dark, I'll see how he likes car rides, he came quite a distance.

40 Question to cat people - Harli's been drinking more water (and thus peeing more) but otherwise seems normal. Should I worry? She's 9 1/2.

Note that finances are very tight (and I don't want to spend money at the vet instead of the dentist, for myself). She's here in the apartment and out on the 4th floor balcony, no exposure to other animals. But I also want to be a good cat mommy.

44 We finally got some comfortable temperatures and could drive with the windows down. Prince the rescue poodle LOVES that. He sticks his head out the window, squints his eyes and lets the breeze blow his ears and fur back. The faster we go the more he likes it. I'm sure he regrets the car won't do Mach one. We have his harness connected to the seat belt so he can't go out too far. This is good since his enthusiasm often outweighs his brains.

Posted by: JTB at September 16, 2017 03:47 PM (V+03K)

45 Miley the Duchess -- when my Pippin started drinking a ton of water and peeing a lot, it was an early warning sign of diabetes. He's a pretty old bugger, though (15 this November) so I'm not sure how that would apply to a nine-year-old.

Have you noticed that Harli's litter box leavings are more, uh, gluey than before? Excess glucose in the urine can make cleaning the litterbox a daunting task, and it could be another sign of diabetes.

1. All fun and games until someone ends up in a cone. Ain't that the truth. I am in week 4 of puppy with fractured paw/cone of shame/splint. She is still jumping and flying off the stairs. Puppies gotta puppy.
2. I have been listening to Travels with Charley on Audibles read by Lt. Dan AosHQ fav Gary Sinese. Fantastic. I am pretty sure Steinbeck would be on our side if he were alive today. America was very different but in a lot of ways the same then. HIghly recommended.
3. Friend's anxious 30 pound rescue chewed a hole through her hard plastic crate and wangled her whole body through it because she hates it, I suppose. I told my friend I guess she won that round, it is a battle of wills.

Nothing wrong with enjoying the book, but you should know that it is a work of fiction.

Some have carefully laid out the evidence that Steinbeck made much of it up, but I think his son put it best.

He just sat in his camper and wrote all that [expletive].

I have heard so much about The Villages. Sounds like a nice Happy Hunting Ground, but I would not enjoy evacuating for a hurricane in my 60s and beyond.

And to you kbdabear. That knowledge IS hard. People say get another pup soon, but I need to wait a while until I can look at a puppy and not think of the end.

154 Youngest grandson came to visit last week. I was concerned because my old dog didn't adopt the baby immediately. He's an old nanny and he loves 'his' babies. He finally did his snuffle, lick, snuffle, lick routine and laid down in front of the carseat. Youngest kid said that maybe he was holding back because the baby belonged to the granddog, not him. Good an explanation as any, I suppose. I am just relieved because I was worried that there was something wrong with the baby that the old dog intuited. For all the time I spend with infants and kids, I am uncomfortable with babies, so the dog and cat are my backups for something being wrong.

155 Bittersweet indeed. Love is about taking that risk, that inevitable loss. But it's so worth it, with pets as with humans.

157 Hard as it is, we always sit with ours so that their last conscious sensations are a soft touch and gentle words.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at September 16, 2017 04:47

Ive told this before but it's very pertinent here. We came home and the wife runs out and says...I think Sally (the cat) is dead.

I go see and she's not breathing, no sign of a heartbeat. Dig a hole in the backyard and as I'm going out thee dorr holding her we hear a noise. I chalk it up to air escaping her lungs since I picked her up.

Place her in the cold ground and her leg moves! (crap, I almost buried my cat alive.) I take back in and sit stroking her. By now you could see her breathing. After a while I realize I am just prolonging the inevitable, it was as if my touch was keeping her barely alive.

So I regretfully decided to stop and within a few minutes she was gone. That is the power touch with loved pets.

I lose my temper so easily. Gibson is never angry with anyone.

--There are countless personality classifications (Meyers-Briggs, the four humors, and so forth) out there, but one of them I learned of (in a workshop at my job, of course) classifies colleagues as lions (proud of accomplishments, get shit done types), beavers (not personable, just wants to find a better way to do everything), otters (fun-loving and all about levity --no, not the Urban Dictionary otters), and . . . Golden Retrievers, who are compassionate, but also can be very sensitive and take things more personally because they feel more.

164 Sorry for your loss Jay. I feel for your kiddo. I watched Marley and Me (never read book) a couple years ago and the end when the oldest son is watching the home videos with him, knowing Marley isn't coming back had me bawling my eyes out. Was at a ride and someone said they didn't like that book, didn't "care about Marley" and all I could say was at least with the movie I didn't think it was about him.

Posted by: PaleRider at September 16, 2017 05:19 PM (8qFZP)

165 Darn my poor phrasing. Oldest son in the movie is watching videos taken of Marley playing while dad is taking Marley to the vet and the child actor did an excellent job of portraying that he knew the dog he grew up with would not be coming home by expression and body language.

Ben Had,

I have and love a 15 year old blue heeler. He is perfect for this little farm.

I would be interested in rescuing a blue or red female, if they are still in your area.

I'm in NWLA. Where, again, in Texas are you?

Posted by: Spun and Murky at September 16, 2017 05:30 PM (4DCSq)

167 Will not watch or read Marley because I had a wild lab, or meth lab as we called him. He started slowing down the last week, but he got his biggest kicks out of making me look like a fool. For all his being such a pain in the neck, he was loved and missed.

Posted by: mustbequantum at September 16, 2017 05:33 PM (MIKMs)

168 Miley the Duchess -- Good luck with your kitteh! For what it's worth, I've found that vets are super helpful with pets who might be diabetic; they want to encourage people to keep their pets rather than dump them in a shelter when they're sick (as happens way too often), so the vets will provide tons of resources and information. Switching to a high-protein wet food is a good start. My kitteh eats two cans a day of Friskies Tuna & Egg, which is a good compromise for him since it's both high-protein and cheap. (And because he's a secret hybrid of cat and monster truck.)

Posted by: Rosa Erik at September 16, 2017 05:33 PM (h7XhS)

169 Our cat Tommy that the vet clinic re-homed when the owner died or got sick does that drink a lot and generate a lot of clumps in the litter box. They didn't ask us to put him on a special diet or anything. I figure if he had an issue they would have known it after keeping him for the weeks until we took him home. We have him on a hairball formula because he also did a lot of puking when we first got him and the hairball formula agrees with him even better than the sensitive stomachs formula did. I just figured Tommy is compensating for some kidney issue and drinking and peeing more is no big deal.

170 Spun and Murky- I'm trying to find out what happened to them. There were some young dogs in the group and they were good looking dogs.

172 167. I understand that. Don't know about the book, but to me the movie was pretty much about the husband and then dad maturing and manning up as he had to step up to wife wanting to be a SAHM after first kiddo, needing to move to a safer neighborhood when Marley goes nuts to get out and goes after dude threatening an apartment neighbor gal with a knife etc etc and Marley being his muse when he needed easy content for his column. But that is just my take from the movie, from what I have heard, the book includes more columns of times Marley was creating havoc or making him look foolish and I don't know that the movie director/producer was even going for what *I* got, its just how I viewed it.
