Bradley "Chelz" Manning Hung Up Phone on Harvard Dean Who Told Him He Was No Longer a "Fellow"/
Combo: And GAINZZ Thread

Strange -- I thought he'd been waiting for just that affirmation.

Anyway, still every inch the lady.

Chelsea Manning, the former US soldier who leaked hundreds of thousands of state secrets and served seven years in military prison, abruptly terminated a phone call with the dean of the Harvard Kennedy school in an expression of her dismay at his decision to revoke her visiting fellowship in the face of severe pressure from the CIA.

Manning ended the conversation on Thursday as the dean, Douglas Elmendorf, tried to justify to her his decision to cancel the fellowship only a day after it had been announced.

Oh, and this sweetheart, who taught at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice and bragged that he was happy to be teaching cops who would soon be "dead cops," has been suspended.

"Some of ya'll might think it sucks being an anti-fascist teaching at John Jay College but I think it’s a privilege to teach future dead cops," Isaacson tweeted on Aug. 23.

Below, the GAINZZZ thread. I don't put these up sometimes because I figure 50% or more of the readership just doesn't care, so I'm going to experiment with putting a news post and a GAINZZZ thread in one post. Comment on either (or whatever else) as you will.

The First GAINZZZ Thread About Actual GAINZZZ

I'm doing a slightly modified Stronglifts 5x5, about two months in. This means that I am still Weak AF and cannot answer the question "Bro, do you even lift?" in the affirmative yet.

I hope to be able to say "Yeah bro I do even lift" in maybe two more months.

Still, seeing some GAINZZZ. The big thing of Rippetoe's system or Stronglift's or the Starr strength system both are based on is just adding weight to the load every single time you lift. This sounds innocent enough when you're just lifting an empty bar, but starts to get daunting pretty fast.

Starting out with low weight allows you to train the form, the technique, without having to worry about thinking about it while under a heavy load. The idea is that by the time you're doing heavier work, the technique is mostly hard-wired into your brain/muscle memory.

Rippetoe's program, by the way, is really similar, except he calls for the powerclean instead of a row. I didn't want to do that, because the powerclean seemed scary to me.

However, if you watch this video of Rip teaching the powerclean to a guy from The Art of Manliness blog, it doesn't look that scary at all. (And keep in mind, you're going to start with an empty bar just to ingrain the movement pattern, and then you'll be adding five pounds per lift. So you'll get to do low weight, just practicing the move, before you graduate to a challenging weight.)

One big benefit of Rip's program: he calls for 3 by 5 for most sets instead of 5 by 5. I thought the 5x5 would be better because, you know, it's more, but...

The squats, man.

I'm thinking about going to that 3x5 set up, at least for squats. Doing five sets of five squats, heavy, three times a week (going up by five pounds each time) is daunting and draining, and sometimes I skip lifting a day entirely just because I don't want to do the squats. The other stuff -- fine. But the squats really do suck every drop of cellular energy out of your body.

One good thing about the Stronglifts program is that he has oodles of information, and even an app to track progress and tell you what to lift every day, all for free. The site is very thorough and includes videos for performing each lift, as well as lots of text guidance.

It's a really good beginner's system, with answers to almost all of the questions a beginner would want answered. I hear good things about Rip's system, too, and of course there are lots of videos of Rip coaching various lifts.

So: tell me about YO GAINZZZ, brahs.

13 also, ace, no offense, buddy -- but you're maybe a little too old to get in to heavy weightlifting.

I used to lift in high school. Saw lots of dudes injured. And these are 18 year olds -- you bounce back a lot quicker at that age then at almost 29 (ahem). And, frankly, even in their early 30's, a lot of them had knee injuries, likely traced back to squatting.

(usual caveats: yes, with proper form you shouldnt injure yourself, but still... it's hard to have perfect form 100% of the time. Why risk it?)

I've mentioned this before, but my chiropractor told me that my back was going to keep tweaking out of alignment unless I did deadlifts and put some muscle into my ass. (Apparently the glutes help anchor the spine and building them up will keep it all in better alignment.)

33 I've been traveling this week, so I've had to make due with the hotel gym. Squats each day, with alternating overhead presses, or bench/rows, and then 30 minutes of fast walking on the treadmill.

Other than that, for the past month I've had limited access to a gym, so I've had to take it easy. Hopefully with the new job I can join the Gold's Gym three blocks away and go on my lunch break. I figure in an hour and a half I can get in squats and either bench, or overhead press, and one day a week I'll do deadlifts, pullups, and sprints on the treadmill. That will leave Saturdays for a longer (2-3 mile) run.

The other nice thing about my new job is that I'm two doors down from the community center where there are dance classes, and if that doesn't work I can make the later evening classes closer to home. So at least twice a week I'll be able to take tango and swing dancing lessons.

Of course, all of this is theoretical since I'll be on the road for pretty much all of October, and then two weeks a month starting in January, most likely.

Re: 3-rep sets, or 5-rep sets

This is great for gaining strength but you also need days when you actually Do Work.

Let's be honest, first of all, these low-rep sets are EASY. Bang-Bang-Bang, and you're done. You're not breathing heavy, and your heart-rate isn't even elevated. You're not "digging deep" to get those reps in to really tear your muscle fibers.

You gain from higher-rep sets, too. I'm not saying do Cardio while you Lift, but you gotta Exert 100% once in a while to gain strength. That means sets of 6-10 reps.

But NEVER ever "grind" when lifting. Never compromise your Form to get reps. That's grinding. When you move and squirm and breakdown your form to get the reps.

78 Ace, I'm curious about your workout environment. You have posted videos of guys building their own workout equipment. The disadvantage to this would be if you're doing all your workouts at home on your own. That would make some of these exercises scarier than if you were working out in a gym with a spotter.

Plus, you just can't max out on some exercises without a spotter. With say a benchpress, you are supposed to take it to the point where you literally can't complete your last set of reps. If you can, you're supposed to up your weight. But, you can't do that without a spotter. It would be scary ending up under too much weight and being too tired to lift it off yourself.

89 No gainzzzz to report. In my case gainzzzz would be losses, small losses, of weight. Don't want more muscle mass, but want to shed about 5-10 lbs. "Thin" by nature, still that way, so maybe that's even 5 lbs. seems intolerable. And still very active, including in gravity sports (where you're supporting your weight), so shedding some lbs. will only help with joints and skeletal issues long-term.

Had a bad bug in August, lost 3 weeks of workouts. And have trouble with dieting. Probably have to increase my output 10% and reduce intake 10% - for months - and hope for the best. Would prefer large increase in workouts and eat/drink the same. Swim/bike/hockey/low-weight-high rep workouts. If I'd just get organized and get into regular ocean swimming I could drop the weight pretty quickly, I bet. And a friend is a world-class ocean swimmer.

Doing chin-ups? They are easier if you move your hands close together. As you improve, move your hands apart more. The back comes into play as you do that, which might help with pull-ups.

I suck at pull-ups and need to make them a priority. My chest is outrunning my back. Not good.

From what I have seen of Rippetoe's stuff, he really focuses on exercises that work as many muscles as possible at once. His argument, iirc, is that the muscles do not function in a normal work situation in an isolated way- so why should you train them that way?

My weight is down to 195, first time below 200 pounds in a decade and 23 pounds lower than I was at the time of my MI. Took my first VO2 test Wednesday and "aced" it by scoring in Cat I. I see a cardiologist on Monday, at which point I'll learn to what extent my heart's ejection fraction has improved from its post-attack level of 40% - 44%. I'll be asking him about strength training during my appointment.

I can stay with linear periodization for awhile.

Except for the overhead press, where I'm plateaued. maybe i'll look up pyramiding for that.

anon y mous,

I have a lame set up which isn't even a power rack, just a cheap set of uprights with some lame "safety arms" (not safety pins, just arms that stick out a bit).

And I mostly work out alone, so yeah, I am always very aware that if a lift goes wrong, I may be in trouble.

When I get up to higher weight, I'll either switch to the floor press or dumbbell pressing, and as far as squats, I have a trap bar and may switch to trapbar squats.

Those changes will largely eliminate the danger of lifting without a spotter.

I might start going to the gym at some point too. I felt like a spazz going in there previously but now that I have a plan for each workout, I feel less stupid.

I'm just too small, weak, and inept for the rate of progress Rippitoe maps out. My principle gainzzz appears to be soreness.

But I'm more likely to check out one of the indoor climbing places if I decide I'm actually going to work on leg muscles. 184 Nice that Hahvaaaahd felt shamed enough to cancel (or was it just the ire of the CIA?), ditto for the JJ Law School, but the imponderable remains:

does the willingness of these institutions to pull this outrageous crap in the first place tell us all we need to know, or do the cancellations paint a *slightly* less dark picture of where things are?

I vote for DOOM. When even Motel 6 feels obliged/wants to publicly diss ICE, we've moved way beyond just the alien/fascist tech companies and their totalitarian/racist obsessions.

212 Weasel - 20 lbs? Wow. Is that F Class hardware, or something else (don't know my competition disciplines all that well)? I always think about the weight of my M1s, and their ammo, when I handle them, and what it was like for small/light Depression-era guys to haul those things around the world.

Speaking of boom-sticks, was watching some documentary footage from the eastern front last night, Soviets taking German POWs. The sentries were holding some sort of rifle with a flat, knife-like bayonet attached (not the spike bayonets, so not 91/30s). Did not get a close/clear look at them. Best snippet showed a sort of heat-shield (round-ish holes in an outer shell) over the end of the barrel - but these were long rifles, not PPshs or anything. Doesn't help that my WWII small arms knowledge ain't all that, but puzzling.

246 Love me some thread gainz.

I still run a P90x random workout of the day - I own X, X+, X2, & X3 (rarely do x2 because of all the equipment stuff). I will also add in accessory lifts -
rear flies, band pull apart, face pulls, extra rows because my posture is still a work in progress and the back can take the volume. I follow Dr John Rusin on facebook and he's got a lot of good stuff there.

I haven't been trying to lose any weight lately, I mean I'm 170-175, so it's not like I need to drop anything at 5'11". Just some recomp/maintenance and it's been working. I could get a little leaner, I'm close to seeing abs.

I set a new record for me of 20 chin ups last week. Never had gotten above 18 previously (4 years ago). And started adding in some weighted pull ups, 20 pounds in a backpack for a couple of sets of 5.

Ever since I changed my goal of being a certain weight to a 'goal' of working out 5 times a week, I've been much more consistent. Still do IF, because it's easy for me to skip breakfast (and still workout in the mornings), and I can do without the extra calories. I have trouble getting below that with diet though. I figure I'd rather try to have a permanent change and have a long slow march than drop it all off quickly, but then fight to keep it at some lower level. IDK, I could be wrong. Either way, I think I'm in a pretty good place for now.

259 Place I volunteer got an advance copy of the handsome book that accompanies the PBS Vietnam series.

As Mike H. says, there's a 1% chance any PBS/Burns presentation of such a topic will be solid history. The holy of holies (for many - waaaay beyond the ranks of "liberals" and "progressives", ahemm) is the whole package of myths about Vietnam. I don't do pet theories much, but in this case I have a pet theory (i.e. just spitballin') that the near-universal embrace of myths and suppression of facts about Vietnam, esp. the final chapter, is explained by the "left's" normal embrace of their own b.s., and more interestingly the desire of the rest to not feel any more shame/guilt than possible over the betrayal/waste of so many lives.

Recently decided not to interrupt my eastern front binge with the "Hue 1968" book. Cheated, glanced at the epilogue, and sure enough - the standard myths about the end game. Wasn't the focus of the book obviously, but was enough to sour me (for now) and go back to Stalingrad.

Funny - not ha-ha funny - but WWII "revisionists" almost exclusively must ignore/distort the actual history to make their stupid points, while Vietnam "revisionists" are the ones actually looking at the history, and using the sources that became available (Soviet, North Vietnamese, Chinese) to debunk the conventional wisdom.

268 I ran 5x5 four of years ago when I was just starting out. It was very good for me, went from squatting the bar to 255 5x5 and from 135 to 315 on the deadlift. I wish I had known however when to quit. After I did that last 5x5 I was so worn out I took a "break" from lifting that turned into a year. I should have had an intermediate program waiting in the wings.
I also never made much progress on the upper body lifts on that program, kept stalling out. When I eventually got back into lifting I used 5/3/1 and was able to break through my sticking points on that one.
I don't powerclean because 1) I suck and 2) I have a home gym in my apartment and don't want to bang on the floor, but when I did try them in a gym they seemed like a great exercise. Maybe if I ever buy a home I can do them in the basement or something.

Posted by: DM at September 15, 2017 08:02 PM (garNZ)

269 I had a tendency to push myself too hard doing SL 5x5, trying to hit my numbers every time. I found that once I started lifting based on how I felt rather than trying to increase the weight every set, I wasn't as likely to hurt myself.

I eventually moved to a big 3 routine. Just squat, deadlift, bench press with a rotating focus on power, strength, and hypertrophy. For example, I'd do squats as hypertrophy (reps), bench press as strength (5 rep sets) and power for deadlift. The next session, rotate the rep ranges for the exercises. http://bit.ly/2h6l6yR

Now that I've developed some basic core strength, I'm rewarding myself by spending more time on aesthetics by doing more isolation exercises.

I give deadlifts their own pyramid workout day (8 reps, 6 reps, 4 reps, 3 reps, 1 rep - increasing weight the whole way up until you hit close to your 1RM- then a few sets going back down). Rather than wearing you out, all the warm up sets help you to be physically ready for the max lift and not get hurt.

Posted by: Xander Crews at September 15, 2017 08:02 PM (fGsuF)

270 Gainzzzz on squats.
Once you have the form and technique down, and you have a competent partner/spotter working with you try this.

Load bar to rweight you can fail safely @ 10 reps (see competent partner/spotter).
Remove 10 pounds per side and lift to failure.
Remove 10 pounds per side and lift to failure.
Remove 10 pounds per side and lift to failure.
Repeat until bare bar and lift to failure.
Get spotter to help you out of bed, car, or chairs next day for 24-36 hours.

And no resting between sets except to remove weights.

Forget the name of this but you're pretty much crawling once DOMS sets in.

Manning gave nothing to the CIA. President Obama commuted Manning's sentence because Manning made himself a member of a politically protected class. Releasing him was very popular among a significant portion of the progressive base.

Looked at from a certain perspective, having his penis and testicles surgically removed and his breasts enlarged was the single best strategic move Manning could make.

I do the 100 pushups (initially 5x10, now 4x25, with a 90 sec walk between sets) every day (before anything else), and I'm half way through. No rest days, but a lot of stretching and protein minimizes the soreness.

I do 2 or 3 days on an elliptical, and 3 days of light to medium lifting; mostly dumbbell curls & skullcrushers.

I rest on Sunday, and most Saturdays. This might be overtraining. I expect to need a week off at the end of 30 days.

I disagree with "you might do it wrong one day so why bother" as a philosophy, though. My hip joints seem to be getting looser (GAINZ?) and I suspect that as my squat form gets better, the deadlift--oy, I still have problems with deadlifts, too, actually--form will get better and the powerclean will get more in my reach.

Despite the finest efforts of all the 'intellectuals' and 'artists' in the world, Israel cannot be convinced that it has a moral obligation to let murderous, subhuman barbarians flood their country and slaughter them at will. But England and the rest of Europe has a deep conviction that they *deserve* for that to happen to them. England is getting what it *wants*. They are the masochists, and they've hired a hairy chested sadist with a leather mask to tie them to the bed and beat them to death. Because that is what they want. Great. 480 Actually, Ace's Gainzzz threads are some of my favorite of the week.

It's nice to not always have to be so intense [and miserable] about the state of politics, terrorism, and America all the time.

One thing that helps me a lot on motivation -- [I'm a trail runner and I like to run alone] is the two times a week I get into the gym to lift, do a little light elliptical, and stretch. Even though I'm still a loner, I really like to see everybody else working out and if I watch between sets, I can learn a lot. Every time I go [for years now] I can see people trying different things [much better than me] and I can make mental notes to try it too [when nobody is looking]. That got me into different stuff -- like the plyometric jumping for instance.

When you see other people Doing Things you think "okay, it's really really not physically impossible -- I just *thought* it was."

I do think that in general most people are "timid" about trying stuff.

And I don't think weightlifting is *ever* just for young people. I'm in my 40s, and it's *great* for me -- it especially helps me to balance out muscle and also work some things that don't get as much work when running. The loss of muscle mass is a huge problem for people who are aging and it's best to work out to avoid that.

In my mind the absolute key to it has been the squats. I went to the gym for years but I never squatted because it hurt. But that right there is the key. You aren't going to the gym for warm tingles. ace,

I have lost 13 pounds in about two months that I largely credit to my casual experiments in mini-fasts on a 'most-days' basis where I only eat about 1.5 meals per day.

It's actually been a pleasant experience.

As you said would be the case, I often enough slide right past a vaguely intended break-the-fast meal simply because I forget or because my schedule requires another priority's attention.
On at least three occasions I've found myself just naturally slipping into a true 24+ hour fast.
I have found that in _some_ small ways my general discipline has improved.
For instance, I'm far more conscientious of when I eat. And it's fairly easy to make adjustments in my schedule to eat when it best suits events in the day.

Assuming I keep at it, I look forward to hitting my target weight of about 175 in about two and a half to three months.

Because of the modest weight loss, going for runs (about 2.5 to 3.5 times a week) has been MUCH easier on my knee - which is sometimes prone to strain/tendonitis or some such minor annoyance that can deter me from kinetic exertion.
If I can hit that target weight, it's conceivable that I might not have much of a knee issue left to speak of. - - - That would be SWEET.

Your sharing your research and experimentation into fasting has been a significant help in my health life regarding weight loss and exercise. (And I have not yet even attempted a fast longer than about 34 hours.)

So thanks again, and please keep up the great blog.

524 Not being entirely sure how old you are, another argument for Rippetoe's program vs Stronglifts is volume. The older you are the more volume sensitive you get. at almost 50, I have a hard time recovering sufficiently from doing 5 work sets on top of all the warmups. This is really well covered in "The Barbell Prescription" by Sullivan. He's a Rippetoe disciple that wrote a book targeted directly at the 40+ lifter. I highly recommend it. Very detailed and an excellent guide for the hows and whys of lifting for foagies.

525 Ace, I've done Rippetoe's plan for beginners and it absolutely works. Forget the 5x5, it's too much stress for a beginner to recover from in a 48 hour period. The 3x5 system every other day is the ideal amount of stress for a beginner to recover from. Follow his program exactly as written, eat an excess amount of calories and get your 1 g/lb protein requirements. Get 8 uninterrupted hours of sleep a night (lifting should help with insomnia), work on perfect form. Watch Rippetoe on Youtube and learn. Check out the startingstrength.com website -- lot's of resources. Resist the urge to do cardio on your rest days or go on a cut. If you do the program as planned, you should be squatting 300 lbs in three months and every aspect of your body will be orders of magnitude stronger. You might be a little doughy after three months, but you're strong and vastly improved in all areas of health and performance. After you're strong, then you can start dialing in the nutrition and focusing on aesthetics. My experience is once you have a three plate squat you don't really care about having a six-pack anymore. Not-strong guys care about six-packs. Go get strong, Ace.

526 Hi
Get a fucking trainer, you do not know what you are doing
Get a good trainer via the starting strength website, they now offer online training as well
Learning to play tennis, shooting a gun, those horses from Spain that Patton liked all require teachers. Are you so fucking stupid to think weightlifting is different? Do you actually want to make progress or just fuck around?.
For reference I went from a shaky squat of 115 to a solid 405 x 5 in 2 years with a starting strength coach, at 40 years old
I hope you are not too fucking stupid to understand this, maybe next time I will draw you a picture you dumb cunt
Have a nice day
