Why is Government Trying to Make a Proven Smoking-Cessation Device Illegal?

The busybodies of the government are determined to destroy vaping, which has helped millions and millions of people quit smoking.

In case you're wondering: It's the smoke that makes smoking dangerous, not the nicotine. Nicotine is the addictive agent, but it's the smoke that's the poison. The tar contains the carcinogens; nicotine itself isn't a carcinogen.

Health studies have found that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking, and its harms are mostly stuff about increasing blood pressure and vasoconstriction, stuff that coffee does too. A harm, yes, and something you'd be better off without -- but it's not cancer.

For me, personally, I quit cold turkey, but started vaping when I complained about a loss of mental focus to a doctor. The doctor said, "Well, as a doctor, I can't recommend vaping exactly, but you might try it."

I think his calculation was, "Better you get your nicotine fix via the at-least-95%-less-harmful vape than that you start building a case in your brain for why you should start smoking cigarettes again."

Was he right? Well, I didn't start smoking again. (Which I'd done before after quitting.) And I've gone from 1.8% nicotine by volume, to 1.2%, to 0.6%, to mixing 0.6% with 0.3% for a net of about 0.45%. I hope to get down to 0.3% next month, and then, after a few months of that, maybe mixing 0.3% with 0.0% for a net of 0.15%.

So bit by bit, I'm actually going off the least harmful part of the cigarette too.

Once I get down to 0.3% or 0.15%, I'll be at such a low level that I could probably just stop altogether without even trying.

Or, I could vape occasionally when I wanted a little boost -- and at such a low dosage, with nicotine itself not being a particularly harmful substance (not good for you, but not really any kind of public health threat), what risk would I really be running if I did so?

I know several commenters here have much the same story. I know at least one is vaping currently at 0.0% nicotine -- that is, no nicotine at all, just doing the vape to mimic the physical part of the addictive behavior. (Like a smoker will try puffing on an unlit cigarette to mimic smoking without smoking.)

But for some reason, crazed Progressive Puritans really really want me to go back to smoking. Maybe so that I can start putting tax money into their government again, funding their sex education classes, and also dying earlier so I can help shore up Obamacare's collapsing financing by simply no longer existing.

Instapundit's post urges Republicans to get on this issue:

Republicans have a chance to to combine sound science and good politics by protecting the 10 million American vapers, a demographic that’s projected to double in the next decade. “These contemptuous nanny-state jerks want to take away the products that are saving their lives,” says Grover Norquist, the GOP strategist. “Believe me, this is a vote-moving issue.”

Indeed it is -- Ron Johnson needed more votes in 2016, and was projected to be a likely loser. But he went around to all the vape stores in Wisconsin and promised them he'd protect them against FDA crackdowns -- and he managed an unexpected win, and is still regarded favorably by most vapers even if they're Democrats.

The documentary below is available on Amazon and maybe Netflix. It talks a lot about how a Baptist/Bootlegger alliance teamed up to prohibit alcohol -- the Baptists wanted alcohol illegal because they thought it was an immoral drink that led to greater vices, and Bootleggers wanted it illegal because Bootleggers only make money if liquor is illegal.

It notes a similar Baptist/Bootlegger alliance going on with the effort towards a new Prohibition on vaping. The Progressive Puritans want it illegal because it "looks like smoking" and because Progressives feel that any vice they don't partake in must be Unholy and therefore be made Illegal, and meanwhile major drug companies which make approved smoking-cessation drugs don't like vaping intruding on their turf.

And of course the government has a vested interest in keeping smokers hooked and dying early, because they pay enormous taxes on cigarettes and exit the health care system earlier than others.

8 I think it's 2 reasons.

The moral busybodies had the scalp of smokers and now it's like it has come back to life and people can do it without all the regulations and its not hurting anybody. It's psychologically damaging to them.

Also, because Big Tobacco (the ancient enemy of the Left) might make some money off of it.

I have a good friend that's a lobbyist and he had a meeting with the American Heart Association and how they wanted to stop vaping and do a big campaign, get legislation, etc. He asked why did they care since there has been zero health risk and they basically had no answer and were pissed it was even brought up.

Don't forget, these are mostly the same people who think that smoking tobacco leaves is the worst thing ever on Earth but smoking marijuana leaves is good for your lungs.

17 Vaping robs them of their precious "second hand smoke" argument, right?

I'd say it's that simple: they can't claim vaping is killing the children, polluting the parks, etc. - thus they lose their reason to control smokers' behavior.

18 Interesting anecdote on the lobbying meeting, Maritime.

Yeah, over time I've become less and less tolerant of nanny-state control over every aspect of our lives (well, duh, as now we've reached the point where people are directly and seriously affected by federal policy in a way undreamt of and never seen in our history).

This anti-vaping thing may be the platonic ideal of this sickness, this alien instinct, that has made America so much less free. Ace's analogy to Prohibition, and the taxonomy of the baleful coalition that imposed it, is perfect.

Snus are little pouches of nicotine crystals that you stick under your upper lip. They're a Scandi invention, but hey, even a blind squirrel fucks a pumpkin twice a day.

You don't get the skank mouth that one gets from dip, nor the need to spit. Girls don't mind kissing you when you Snus. (I imagine boys wouldn't either, if that's who you kiss).

Marlboro makes them, but the better ones are from Camel.

I am still a nicotine addict but I've been smoke free for seven years (minus a stretch during a bad breakup, I needed actual smoking for that).

27 Here's your answer:

"Even though the Tobacco Industry spends up to $6 billion a year on
advertising and promotion, large tobacco companies can deduct up to 100%
of the cost from a their tax bill in the U.S. Meanwhile, congress
provides $40 million a year in tobacco tax subsidies and spends $250
million a year to counter tobacco advertising
with anti-tobacco programs.

In addition the Centers for Disease Control and the University of
California estimated that in 1993 the health care cost of tobacco
related disease was at least $50 billion, or $2.06 per pack, which
exceeded the 56 cents tax revenue per pack earned as income in the
U.S"
So..Big Tobacco supports advertising and, since it kills people, the medical industry. Plus "the jobs."

As I've noted before, whereTF are the zillions of $$$ of public money spent on anti-tobacco ads, for marijuana? And let's see the non-carcinogenic effects included, too.

I give fewer than zero f***s if somebody wants to smoke or ingest dope. Their life, their problem/joy/salvation/whateverTF.

But since I'm enslaved in a country with no more medical insurance, and a billion kinds of welfare and cost-shifting, always favoring the risk-takers and punishing the prudent, then I'd like to see pot get at least the tobacco treatment.

Missouri is around 3.20-3.50 a pack.

Taxes. Sin tax. If everyone in Illinois quit smoking tomorrow, the loss of revenue would be immediately made up for, by an onerous tax on something else.

Yup. And you can bet that you will not get honest stats about pot.
For example, in Colorado the number of auto accidents deaths that involve pot use greatly increased starting in 2013 (when legalized), but then there's this detail included in the story:

State law does not require coroners to test deceased drivers
specifically for marijuana use in fatal wrecks -- some do and some don't -- and many police agencies say they don't pursue cannabinoid tests of a
surviving driver whose blood alcohol level is already high enough to
charge them with a crime.

They don't want to know if/to what extent pot might be dangerous.

Pot smoke is much, much heavier than tobacco smoke. There isn't even a comparison. Further, people who smoke pot actually try to keep it in their lungs, as opposed to cigarette smokers.

You want to meet some real hackers and coughers, check out pot-heads. They are far worse than cigarette chain smokers.

As to carcinogens, pretty much all smoke from burning organic matter is full of them. Are there any particularly insidious ones in tobacco smoke that don't have equivalents in pot smoke? Could be, but doubtful. Of course, no one knows because there's no real research done with pot - which brings up the interesting point that state after state is legalizing pot, and that is the only drug that is being let out into the public with no research, no data, no nothing about it but some stories from stoners and charlatans who tried to sell it as medication in lieu of being able to just get legalized recreationally.

96 Someone brought up Muslims so here goes. I live in NJ where a lot of Muslims live and hookah smoking has become all the rage--even among young, white non-Muslims. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a hookah lounge or a hookah store. They are for sale all over the place--even gas stations. Hookah lounges are thriving--but bars and taverns are not. NJ passed a law in 2006 that banned smoking in bars. Many have closed since, and while some may say that's a good thing---Muslims and hookah lounges are reaping the economic benefits.

99 1. The government is getting huge amounts of taxes from tobacco. Vaping cuts into that.

2. Vaping also cuts into cigarette sales by tobacco companies.

3. Big Pharma was making lots of money from nicotine gum and patches. Sales of those items have cratered since vaping came along.

4. Leftist do-gooders can't stand to see anybody enjoying themselves, and will seek to punish those people one way or another. Vaping *looks* like smoking, so it must be taxed and regulated exactly like smoking.

This is all completely wrong. There has been a lot of peer reviewed research on this topic and it is pretty uncontested that marijuana smoke is not only not carcinogenic in any meaningful way, some studies have actually found it to be beneficial.

Whatever your personal opinions on marijuana the idea that doctors by the scores and state medical boards are not only legalizing its use buy allowing doctors to prescribe it for certain conditions without tons of discussion by both sides and lots and lots of clinical data is absurd. When was the last time you saw a doctor prescribe smoking cigarettes for any type of medical condition?

Yeah, in CO they have no interest in any stats/studies that would mess with their pot-related revenue. Particularly as a test case of sorts for other states.

You have to figure out what the issues are indirectly, such as when the local Children's Hospital starts running PSAs on how to identify if your kid has ingested pot and what to do. No stats on this available, but it must be a trend if they feel compelled to teach parents the signs, that sort of thing.

148 Jack, the problem with patches is that they neglect the addition to the *process* . . . the nicotrol-ns includes a process, which is why I loved it so. But, I still smoked a bit, and back to the regular half pack a day when I was priced out of it. But, if you are really committed to helping your mom, it might be worth a try.

Well you know what else is an "annoyance"?

People who buy a damn dog and leave him to bark his stinking head off all day and all night driving the neighborhood crazy.

Bike lanes.

Paying for a car, the tag, taxes, the registration, the insurance, the license, then paying taxes to have roads built and then having fcuking GA DOT use tax money to widen the road by two lanes then CHARGE A G-Damned TOLL FOR USING IT.

Fcuk your "annoyance".

"The Food and Drug Administration has forbidden e-cigarette firms from mentioning any health advantages over cigarettes, and it adopted rules to outlaw virtually all existing vaping devices next year."

The impeding vapocalypse set for next year was pushed back to 2022, so there is some minute possibility that sanity will prevail.

Also, I'm one of the 0.0% nicotine vapers as of a few months ago. I've got a crap ton of PG, VG, wire, cotton, and little vials of flavor concentrate so I'll just keep puffing away for a while longer. I generally leave the ecig at home while at work these days which, in one way, is bad as I no longer get up and walk around every hour.

Posted by: Ace's liver at September 14, 2017 08:19 PM (+azJs)

215 For me, personally, I quit cold turkey, but started vaping when I complained about a loss of mental focus to a doctor. The doctor said, "Well, as a doctor, I can't recommend vaping exactly, but you might try it."

I quit before vapping came out and my doctor definitely recommended using nicotine gum or lozenges or the patch to help me quit since I was a heavy smoker.

Why is nicotine gum OK for doctors to recommend, but vapping isn't?

My sister and brother both vapped. My brother eventually gave it up, my sister still does it after meals, but both agreed it helped them like nothing else had. I'm positive I would have done the vapping thing if I had had the chance.

One of things you miss most about smoking is the lighting up and inhaling after a tough day. There's something satisfying about exhaling and blowing smoke that just isn't satisfied by gum chewing or candy or pretending cinnamon sticks or pencils are cigarettes.

216 Is Big Tobacco really behind this? I thought they were buying into the vape market to cut out their own share. Regardless, if vaping IS ever outlawed, nearly every single vaper will be so pissed that they'll cut their own lips off before EVER buying tobacco again, whether the tobacco industry is behind it or not. I know of no one who both vapes and smokes with any regularity.

So who does this serve, since outlawing vaping isn't any kind of win for RJR, et al. Who wins? Statists who don't care one way or the other about vaping but just want one more degree of incremental control. THAT'S why this battle has to be fought, else vaping goes the way of incandescent bulbs. They want to tell you how to live your life JUST BECAUSE IT'S IN THEIR POWER TO MAKE YOU OBEY.

Not me. Shit, they'll probably be so happy when I die, it'll be a state funeral. And I still find regular light bulbs. And, I did a search . . . the State of Indiana, last year, enacted a law saying they could NEVER ban plastic bags. I got a tingle, I really did.

Yep. I have three more days of work left.

Co-worker is a useless long haired 43 year old SJW male libtard who feels guilty about being a white male. He worships Neil DeGrasse Tyson and hates organized religion. Not ROP; brought up Baptist. Hates cats.

Once he gets married, he'll stay home, play Xbox, masturbate and his wife will support him.

224 Now that we have an open thread, I can link the video compilation SpaceX released today featuring their early landing attempts. A blooper reel, if you will.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvim4rsNHkQ

A lot of us have been looking forward to this for quite awhile. There have been bits and pieces, but now they're available for the first time in glorious HD.

I guess that now that they've had 16 successful landings including 12 in a row, they feel confident enough to show the world the steps it took to get there.

This is in the Top 10 trending videos on YouTube. When I saw it early this morning it had 99,000 views. It is now approaching 1,000,000 in a little over 12 hours.

226 So this is kind of funny... I've heard whispers at the law school (!) I'm in that there should be a smoking lounge now that weed is legal in MA.

No, not cigarette smoking lounge, but a weed smoking lounge.

We cigarette smokers are still expected to huddle on a street corner in the pouring rain.

Don't forget Big Pharma. They were making tons of money with nicotine gum and patches. Sales of those items have cratered since vaping came along.

Both Big Tobacco and Big Pharma give Big Donations to Big Politicians.

228 "Big Pharma"

Now there's the angle I hadn't considered but Big Tobacco loses out no matter what. Smokers will not come back. Maybe in a generation or two, but not ex's.

The tiny, dank conspiratorial side of my mind (okay, not so tiny) believes the medical establishment as a whole is behind it, for much the same reason they continue to push Synthroid for all cases of hypothyroid and downplay/ignore natural dessicated thyroid, which works far better because I'm on it.

230 Remember, low-flow toilets and faucets, incandescents going the way of the dodo, and many other various regulations were pushed thru by republicans (like our fave bikini babe Kate Upton's uncle) or allowed under republican rule, like unchained EPA etc.

They SHOULD get away from these issues, but they just can't seem to keep their hands out of them.

War on drugs for example too..

236 Police around here where marijuana is still illegal don't really care for the vape due to the THC juice you can use in them. You can puff on that right in front of them and they can't even tell you're doing it. I, uh, err, have friends that have them and have seen them use it in a bar that allows vaping. Nobody knows.

237 The Restraining Order, Sherrod Brown, is against them so by definition they have to be good. 238 I left a pack and a half to 2 pack per day smoking habit behind with e cigs a few years ago now.

Jack Straw: I buy Blu brand e cigs. They are disposable, so ready to go when you open the package, throw it away when it is spent. I like the cherry flavor best though I started with their 'tobacco' flavor.

Back when I started vaping, I tried buying the liquid and filling the tank, etc. but I really hated having to mess around with all that. Like your mom, I wanted something as convenient as buying a pack of cigarettes. Blu disposable e cigs fit the bill literally; No cost savings in buying the ready-to-go disposables but just as easy as opening a pack of cigarettes. For me, it is worth it.

My lungs cleared up. I stopped having the smoker's hack a long time ago now, no wheezing, etc. I recommend highly.

240 Hey, look on the bright side. You can smoke all the pot you want! It's "cool" and has the official seal of approval of the progressive left... at least until Big Tobacco starts churning it out.

Posted by: ZonToro at September 14, 2017 10:55 PM (V0pGL)

241 You know when I started vaping? Sometime in late 2012, after reading a post here by Ace. Went out the next day and found a vape shop and bought an eGo kit and a variety of liquids, stopping my 2+ pack a day, 30 year Camel Light habit that gum, mints, drugs and willpower couldn't get me to stop.

I've had five cigarettes since then, and four of them were on either end of a Germany to Vancouver BC trip after my extra vape supplies got lost with my checked luggage.

Since vaping, I haven't felt this healthy in years, I can breath freely, I can smell, I can taste, and I don't smell (or taste) like an ashtray. My house is cleaner, my cars are cleaner, my windows are not semi-opaque.

These days I make my own juice with quality ingredients, wrap my own coils with quality wire, and wick it with quality cotton, partly because its cheaper, and partly because of trust on my part.

Trust, you say? Yes, trust, because the industry needs *some* regulation, especially in the manufacture of coils and liquids.

Until I can trust what's in bottled liquids and pre-made coils (said coils being mostly a product of China), I hedge my bets by going DIY with ingredients and materials I can better trust.

All that said, I feel the level of government regulation on vaping should be extremely limited, and no more restrictive than what the makers and sellers of alcoholic beverages have to put up with.

242 I'm a retired HR manager. When vaping became popular, I was agreeable to people vaping at their desks.mwhy not? No second hand smoke, no fire hazard, no health hazard. The bonus is that it keeps people at their desks working rather than losing 15 minutes several times a day for smoke breaks.

However, senior management decided that it was evil in some sort of a homeopathic way.

243 I quit smoking 5 months ago, after 35 yrs it was easy this time because of vaping, although I wish I had investigated more cause i wasted alot of money on different things, still cheaper than smoking tho, I use an SX mini 200 watt mod with a smok TFV 8 X baby tank, and just started making RBAs and my own Juice, The so called Puritans are really just fascists who hate anyone ro thing they disagree with, it really is that simple.

Posted by: Ed at September 15, 2017 11:19 AM (RCZwi)

244 I smoked for 35 years. The only thing that helped me quit were switching to e-cigs for about 3 weeks.

I haven't touched a cigarette for 5 years. I feel better, and my wife has had about $20K to spend on other things.

Posted by: jrg at September 15, 2017 11:22 AM (RcJUJ)

245 It all comes down to the fact that people smoking eCigs look exactly like they're smoking, and enjoying it too, and that's just too much for the anti-smoking nazis to abide.

Posted by: Random Thought Generator at September 15, 2017 11:53 AM (iOKfQ)

246 It's all about the money. Until vaping is taxed as heavily as tobacco, the government is opposed to it.

247 They'll have to remove my e-cig from my cold, dead hands.
When they raised the cost of ciggies to roughly 1k a carton, I took up vaping and haven't smoked since.
Please, for the love of God, let me keep my little device. I don't kill, I don't steal and I don't covet my neighbor's husband (well rarely). Just LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
