I remember being too angry to concentrate at work, so I went home to a beautiful September afternoon. I went out into the back yard and looked up . . . the jet contrails that *always* were in the sky were absent that day. And it was eerily quiet, like the whole world had stopped for a while.

My Dad had trained our dog to sit still while he set a treat on his nose. He would sit perfectly still until he was told ok boy! You could also sit three treats on the floor and he would only eat the one you pointed to.But then again, Mom set five pounds of Ground Round out to thaw one afternoon and went to take a shower. She came back to the kitchen to see Dog eating the last of the meat off the kitchen floor.So it goes to show, even the best trained dogs will take advantage if you give them a chance.
Yes, a dog doing what is instinctive to get food has hilarious results when they are not properly trained.

My daughter was a DoD support contractor and in the Pentagon on "that" 9/11 and, as we later found out, had walked the C Ring between Corridors 4 and 5 ten minutes before the plane hit. I was on the road but went home to be with Mrs H and we could not raise daughter on the cell phone until early afternoon. We started breathing again when son H in Florida called to say he had been in touch her and she was safe (DC area cell service was completely hosed for quite some time).

I came home one day to two of my 3 dogs literally leaning against the front door.

Now my dog story, we had a bassett hound named Droopy that was the laziest thing you could ever imagine. Us kids finally talked mom into letting him in the house one night when it was cold. Mom had made cinnamon rolls that night and had put them up on the table overnight. Somehow mr. littlelegs managed to get up on a chair and then onto the table and ate most of them. Mom still talks how she went to let him out the next morning before noticing and wondering why his ears were so sticky....

as for JFK v Nixon. The WSJ had an article about how some southern states transferred non-JFK votes to him. The details are fuzzy but a lot of southerners were hardcore donks but wouldn't vote for that catholic yankee skirt chaser so those votes were all lost. Instapundit had an observation about 9/11 that I totally agree with, which is-

I've often thought the same or similar things.
Why was America in such a hurry to elect a guy with the name, Barack Hussein Obama, cuz that's really all they knew about him.
We, as a nation, literally elected a guy with no accomplishments in gov't, business, the military, anywhere at anything.
The Left had suffered lots of setback in the proceeding years.
The collapse of the Soviet Union proved that socialism/communism was a failed system.
The Clinton sex scandals proved that feminism was a cynical scam to gull the weak-minded.
Then, 9/11 happened.
I think at that point the Left broke. Pretty much every single thing they believed was proven with blood and fire to be completely false,
and they couldn't take it.
They could no longer handle reality. Everything they had been told made them "good people" becuz they believed it, was a lie.
At that point, you can do one of two things:
1) Reassess your beliefs and change them
or
2) Double down on the fantasy
Obviously, as a group, they chose #2.
Or rather, I think, the smart people who finance and reap money from the left, realized that this was a good way to maintain control and money flow.
America was the problem. Not islam. And look! See we elected a guy with a muslim name to "fundamentally change America".
And with each step, they took America farther into fantasyland, where anything was true but reality.

Why is it stated that Harsayni et al dictate with any sort of accuracy what "the coverage" of 911 indicates within our "culture?" It's fucking baffling to me. It's Harsayni's utterly defeatist words that are the depressing element: to think ANY arm of the media has that power to tell us what we believe, what we feel, etc. And in no way does "coverage" of anything determine popular sentiment.

One of the women co-bloggers on Insty's site has a piece up about how she went to France recently, and on the the way back she (and a bunch of other older white Europeans) were stopped and taken out of the line and made to go through extra security procedures. Meanwhile, young Muslim men were going through the line with no problem, nobody stopping and questioning or searching them.

When I was a rookie in the burn house, pulling on my pants crammed down over my boots , turnout out coat, airpack and helmet, throwing the "high-rise pack" on my shoulder and climbing those damn stairs again and again.
Fast forward to 2001.
Working as a computer geek, watching "Drudge Report" and realizing that something was terribly wrong.
We turned on the office tv. And watched those guys throwing the "highrise pack" on their shoulders. And being so proud of these American guys determined to get to that top floor.
And then watching it fall.

My wife was a corporate travel agent and had people on those flights out of Boston. Really screwed her up bad. Families are calling her and what's she gonna tell them, the obvious? Ended up leaving the business.
A few years later we're in NYC and take the tour of the Intrepid. They have a 9/11 exhibit on the and one of the items was a wrecked window from one of the planes. And she fell apart. "What if one of my people was looking out that window when they hit?"
So I take 9/11 pretty personally. Mainly because of what it did to her.

Greetings from southeast Florida. Other than some downed trees and losing my backyard fences, we made out pretty well on my block (except for the guy who parked under the old oak tree that went down) 48 hrs without power, got it back on tonight, forgot it was 9/11, puts things in perspective. Here's what I wonder about: when the next big attack in the U.S. happens (not just a few dozen murders at one time, which is something we have sadly become used to), but something on the scale of 9/11 or bigger, how are we going to respond then? Are we going to continue to pretend it's not about Islam? Are we going to keep insisting that "Islam is a religion of peace"? Are we still going to tiptoe around Muslims and treat them as the "real" victims of terrorist attacks?

We can't over-emphasize how destructive it is to have laws inconsistently applied. It is especially harmful that high-profile people have gotten away with serious felonies right in front of everybody.
Couple that with the "three felonies a day" whacko laws where any decent, harmless person could end up on the wrong side of The Law.

The Sunday after 9/11 my (RC) church was full (central NJ). The battle hymn of the republic was sung as powerfully as you can imagine. The priest, an older man, gave the most powerful sermon I have ever heard. It was a war sermon and it pulled no punches about who was responsible for starting the war. The congregation was in tears and we could have taken Tora Bora that afternoon. 16 years later it's as if it never happened.

I remember as a very young child seeing Eid on calendars, sometimes Ramadan, but that's it. That's how I first learned that there was even such a thing as Islam as a religion.
Now it's every damned made up minor provincial celebration, as if it were a straight up orthodox christian liturgical calendar.
As if any Muslim in America A) gives a crap about most of these holidays to begin with or B) needs a damned english-language Kuffir Gregorian calendar to remind them.

I felt so ashamed that I had forgotten it was 9-11. With all the shouting about Irma and our own family chaos, it completely slipped my mind. I made myself watch the video's of the news coverage that day, this morning when I got up. We cannot ever forget that day and those people that died. We cannot ever forget that the evil that conceived that plan is still out there and want us dead. I needed to remember that and the emotion we felt watching it all happen. We saw the people jumping out of the buildings, we couldn't even imagine it. My husband and I cried because we knew nothing would ever be the same for anyone.

Been watching 102 Minutes on history channel. It's weird as we were flying that day from NJ, Atlantic City. We almost chose Newark, but didn't.
We crossed paths w/ the Shanksville plane as we crossed over PA. Was freaky.

Trump needs to understand that the enemy is living right here and teaching at the universities.

I saw your post about Kathy Moran in the previous thread. I wanted you to know she was an employee at my company (long before I started), and she was beloved. People still talk about her enthusiasm, and recall how her laughter filled a room.
In 2002 the company created a prestigious community service/citizenship award in honor of her and three other of our employees who were killed that day while working in our NY field office in the towers. The company also planted a memorial garden. We moved into a new HQ building last year here in Illinois, and they transplanted the 16-year-old maple and the other plants to the new site in an even more prominent and attractive setting. Today we had a rededication ceremony and it was really beautiful. Cynic that I've become, I was floored and nearly moved to tears when near the end of the ceremony a bagpipe issued forth with "Amazing Grace".
It has not always been a smooth ride at our company, but they have always placed a very high priority on this award and honoring Kathy and the others' memory. For that I've always been grateful.
