On the sixteenth anniversary of 9/11, David Harsyani writes that the country is divided and may never feel again the same (largely fictive) unity it did post-9/11.

So here's a depressing thought on the anniversary of 9/11: What if those two or three weeks of harmony 16 years ago will be the last we experience for a very long time? Considering our trajectory, this seems more likely than not. After all, surveying the coverage of the anniversary of 9/11 this morning, it's difficult not to notice that Americans don’t really share a coherent, unifying cultural or idealistic value system anymore.

"Never forget" feels like a hollow slogan when much of America began the effort to forget 9/11 weeks after it happened.

And on that, Ed Driscoll has additional thoughts.

A couple of pieces on 9/11: one from Esquire last year on the shocking Falling Man picture (and its eradication from the record), and remembering a fireman killed by one of the 50-200 falling bodies on 9/11.

A reader asks you take a moment to remember FDNY Battalion Commander Brian Hickey, lost on 9/11.

...

Other topics:

Via Mark Hemingway (@heminator on Twitter), this review of a movie about Chappaquiddick (called "Chappaquiddick") seems... a very odd choice for Hollywood.

Forty-eight years later, let’s be clear on what the meaning of Chappaquiddick is. Ted Kennedy should, by all rights, have stood trial for involuntary manslaughter, which would likely have ended his political career. The fact that the Kennedy family -- the original postwar dynasty of the one percent -- possessed, and exerted, the influence to squash the case is the essence of what Chappaquiddick means. The Kennedys lived outside the law; the one instance in American history of an illegally stolen presidential election was the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960. He in all likelihood lost the race to Richard Nixon, but his father tried to steal the election for him by manipulating the vote tallies in (among other places) Illinois. That’s the meaning of Chappaquiddick. too.

I don’t say any of this as a right-wing troll. But those are the facts, and they are facts that liberals, too often, have been willing to shove under the carpet. And they have paid the price. Ted Kennedy became known as "the Lion of the Senate," and did a lot of good, but when you try to build a governing philosophy on top of lies, one way or another those lies will come back to haunt you. (Hello, Donald Trump! He’s an incompetent bully, but his middle name might be "Liberal Karma.") As a movie, "Chappaquiddick" doesn’t embellish the incidents it shows us, because it doesn't have to. It simply delivers the truth of what happened: the logistical truth of the accident, and also the squirmy truth of what went on in Ted Kennedy's soul. The result may play like avid prose rather than investigative cinema poetry, but it still adds up to a movie that achieves what too few American political dramas do: a reckoning.

Republican Senator Bob Menendez, a man so Republican he once shot a man just for snoring in Spanish, had a bad day in court today, by which I mean, "Evidence was presented."

I think this news might be more important for readers of this site than others: Beware, your sex robot may one day murder you.

Finally, watch the dog in the extreme lower right of this video:

But if they want to push, and they want to destroy our peaceful, democratic society as we know it, my capacity for violence is beyond what Antifa could possibly imagine. And I am certain I am not the only conservative or war veteran thinking this way.

Which would have led to a probably 2008 win by McCain because the market would have still crashed through the floor then, to a 2012 win by Obama or Clinton because McCain is just an utter fuck of a loser, to 8 years of Obama/Clinton because the country is just that fucking stupid.

So technically sans 9/11 we'd still be under an Obama presidency, lolz, and maybe Trump would have run after being disgusted with everything in 2020 instead.

Ted Kennedy was born and raised in a poverty-stricken hardscrabble family. While at Harvard he showed an aptitude for strikingly original thinking. His awe-inspiring list of accomplishments before his election to the Senate made the voters impatient about the Constitutional age limit for members of the Upper House.

When faced with a grave personal crisis, he stirringly said, "Let Justice be done though the heavens may fall!" His vision of why he should be President was so incisive it was only through the machinations of his opponent that he was denied the Chief Magistracy.

His green-eyeshade view of government spending and his careful respect for the Constitutional limit of the reach of government earned him the affectionate sobriquet "The Taxpayer's Friend".

A faithful husband and the father of another upstanding legislator, Kennedy was the living embodiment of his Catholic faith. We shall not see his kind again.

84 Speaking of movies, I don't think I'll patronize the apparently PC-version of Vince Flynn's "American Assassin."

This is from an interview with Dylan O'Brien (apparently another ignorant Leftist idiot, BIRM twice), the actor playing Mitch Rapp (http://tinyurl.com/yakr2oee) -- Gag Me With A Spoon:

O'Brien connected with the role of Rapp and saw it as an appropriate step for him at this stage of his career. But before production began, he made a point to ensure that the movie handled the delicate subject of terrorism with sensitivity, and didn't hone in on just one group of people.

"I wanted to make sure we were going about it in the right way, and not being black and white about something that is such a gray area," O'Brien said. "Especially now, with terrorism and how it's everywhere, and it is a fear that everyone is currently living with."

To address this concern, O'Brien says the film's creators worked to make the script as up to date as possible. "American Assassin" is based off of a 2010 book by the same name, which was written by author Vince Flynn.

The film pits O'Brien against terrorists from different countries and backgrounds -- and the main villain, Ghost, is an American who schemes to carry out a heinous attack on the United States.

"With Ghost being the primary antagonist, I feel like that sort of displays what's going on now in terms of terrorism being everywhere, and not specifically secluded to one group or place," O'Brien said.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "political solution", in the abstract.

What we need is a "cultural" solution.

Not all, but most, people must get back to grips with reality.

Shut up. Go to work. Leave your neighbors alone. Stop blaming others for your misfortunes.

We'll no longer be "divided" then, just a bunch of people who disagree about a few things here and there, with a small handful of loud-mouthed nutters who can be safely ignored.

Our "divisions" are not political, really. They are existential. The leftists/barbarians actually want to live in a different existence that is incompatible with normal human reality. There is no negotiation or middle-ground or compromise with Marxist-Leninism. They've done some serious damage to anglo-american culture over time, but I don't think it's game over just yet.

(But to your point a catastrophe would indeed be one way of short-circuiting the process of cultural restoration)

The most dangerous single Islamist network in the US is the formal diplomatic arm of the KSA, through which terror funding has flowed like a wellspring, and which is now reported to have coordinated "dry runs" for 9/11 using its own official consular personnel.

Plus the Kingdom's various registered and unregistered lobbyists, flunkies, stooges, co-investors, business partners, and ideological allies within Fedzilla.

I think the "Nixon really won 1960" thing needs to be put to rest. Besides, it's not as if we were deprived of a Nixon presidency and never got to find out what he'd do.

On the Teddy front, though, good god. He didn't even have a valid driver's license at the time. The book Senatorial Privilege is a very comprehensive minute by minute account of how cravenly he acted and how thoroughly he was enabled.

True.

As an aside, two nights ago, I was getting dinner on the kitchen table. I turned away for a few minutes to do something else, and when I glanced at the table, Mike Hammer's Cat was drinking out of my water glass.

While I was standing there pondering this, he dipped his front paw in the water and licked it. You know...the paw he uses to scrape his litter.

I scooted him off the table, got a fresh glass, and thought, "That's odd, he's never done that before". Then I began to think back about times that the water may have tasted funny...

A political blogger says the election of President Trump will go down in American history as an event at least as disastrous as the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The 9/11 attacks were a horrific event in US history, but the election of Donald Trump will be seen as equally disastrous, if not more so, Charles Johnson, founder of Little Green Footballs, said on Twitter Monday.

In subsequent tweets, Mr. Johnson stood by his claim, arguing Mr. Trump has already destroyed much of whats good about America, and its getting worse every day.

I was living in LA when 9/11 happened. Strangely, I was in NYC exactly a week before. Whenever I came to town, I stayed at my brother's place in Qeens, and then went over to my folks who lived a few blocks away to have an early breakfast, and then take the E train down to the WTC. From there, I'd go to J&R Music, a cigar store, Century 21 (clothing) and then walk back up through Tribeca to the Village. In fact, I used to refer to the WTC as my "ground zero" as that's where I usually began my walks uptown.

So, on Tuesday, September 4th, I got out of the train at the WTC, exited and for some unknown reason, I turned around and looked up at the top of the buildings. I stared at them for about a minute or so before turning and walking away. To this day, I cannot for the life of me explain why I did that; I never did that. Precognition? Who knows.

179 As an American who watched the horror of 9/11 from the safety of Arizona, I feel as if I should apologize to all the 9/11 victims. We failed you, in every possible way. Instead of standing up against the insidious ideology whose demented adherents viciously murdered you in its name, we completely surrendered to it.

We responded to your horrific murders by inviting millions more Muslims to come here, some of whom have already committed more terrorist attacks here, and others of whom undoubtedly will commit even more terrorist attacks here in the future. We even allowed them to plan the erection of a victory mosque at Ground Zero. We now condemn as "racists" or "Islamophobes" anyone who dares to criticize Islam or the violence and hatred for non-Muslims that it instructs its believers is their duty.

We treat Muslims as the victims of 9/11, instead of the actual victims. Worst of all, a mere 7 years after we watched you all die horrible, horrible deaths, we elected as our president a Muslim appeaser and apologist who still insists to this day that Islamic terrorism is caused by a lack of jobs and education. He emboldened Muslim terrorists across the globe, and even flew planeloads of our cash and gold to the mullahs in Iran, so that they could develop nuclear weapons quicker.

So to all the victims of 9/11 -- and Boston and Ft. Hood and Chattanooga and San Bernardino and Orlando and all the other cities that will one day be on this list -- I apologize.

I asked my brother if it was wise to leave a bowl of Hershey's kisses on the coffee table where the dog could reach them. "Oh, he's really well trained, he doesn't touch them"

One evening we were watching TV and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the dog sneak up to the table, look at us, and then take a kiss from the bowl and run into the kitchen, where his bed was. I went back there and found little pieces of tin foil all over his bed.

Now that was a smart dog. he was sneaky because he knew he shouldn't be doing it and he was smart enough to only take one at a time, not shove his face in the bowl and gobble.

213 Here are my thoughts on 9/11 from this morning:

Instapundit had an observation about 9/11 that I totally agree with, which is-

immediately after 9/11 the one thing I never thought would happen is that America would elect a feckless leftist as president, who would proceed to flush away America's position in the world and security over eight years,

as America stood around and let him.

I've often thought the same or similar things.

Why was America in such a hurry to elect a guy with the name, Barack Hussein Obama, cuz that's really all they knew about him.

We, as a nation, literally elected a guy with no accomplishments in gov't, business, the military, anywhere at anything.

The Left had suffered lots of setback in the proceeding years.

The collapse of the Soviet Union proved that socialism/communism was a failed system.

The Clinton sex scandals proved that feminism was a cynical scam to gull the weak-minded.

Then, 9/11 happened.

I think at that point the Left broke. Pretty much every single thing they believed was proven with blood and fire to be completely false,

and they couldn't take it.

They could no longer handle reality. Everything they had been told made them "good people" becuz they believed it, was a lie.

At that point, you can do one of two things:

1) Reassess your beliefs and change them

or

2) Double down on the fantasy

Obviously, as a group, they chose #2.

Or rather, I think, the smart people who finance and reap money from the left, realized that this was a good way to maintain control and money flow.

America was the problem. Not islam. And look! See we elected a guy with a muslim name to "fundamentally change America".

And with each step, they took America farther into fantasyland, where anything was true but reality.

Hey that socialism stuff works!!! And if you don't agree, we'll beat you up.

Men can become women and women can become men and both can become pretty pretty ponies!!!

The solar cycles have nothing to do with weather on Earth. It's all stuff man does like barbecuing steaks! Yeah, mostly bbq and driving cars. Oh, and air conditioning. And industry. But, not the sun.

And even after 8 years of "there there here's you binky" politics for the left, they as people are still broken.

And that's why we have the NeverTrump insanity -

they were all set to make Their Fantasy the law of the land with the full majesty of the US law-enforcement behind it.

But then.....Trump.

But everything- Antifa, everything I now believe flows from 9/11-

the day reality broke the Leftists' minds.

I know TL?DR, but I've been thinking a lot about this lately cuz-

I don't know how we find our way back cuz it seems we are dealing with a mass hysteria and functional insanity in large groups of people.

And we absolutely cannot give the Left the Power Binky, which they so crave. To do so would destroy our future and the future of our children and grandchildren.

It is a quandary.

239 Chappaquadik was one of the definiting moments in the 20th century and one that is still resounding today. It was decided that a young woman's life was worth less than a politician's career.

The only way to come to that conclusion is completely remove morality--the sense of "right" and "wrong"--from the equation. The conclusion then becomes obvious.

Look upon the left in the decades since. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton. They all learned the lesson of Chappaquadik well--power justifies everything. Power justifies everything.

That sort of thing has leaked into the rank-and-file left as well. Look at the SJWs--if you can stand to do so. They are Kennedy's children.

249 "@81 Illinois dead voters/papa Daley won it for him I believe"

Years ago, a now-deceased conservative Catholic blogger from Chicago (Tom Roeser), who was old enough to remember this and possibly in a position to know, claimed that Daley Sr's massive GOTV drive in 1960 was NOT actually aimed primarily at electing JFK, but at defeating a Republican candidate for Cook County state's attorney (prosecutor) who had once been a friend of his, but now was vowing to aggressively pursue corruption in City Hall and elsewhere, and actually had a good shot at winning. Not sure how true that is but given that genuine Chicago Machine pols consider mayor or alderman the highest office one can attain -- to which state or federal office is secondary and merely a steppingstone -- I have to wonder.

252 Why is it stated that Harsayni et al dictate with any sort of accuracy what "the coverage" of 911 indicates within our "culture?" It's fucking baffling to me. It's Harsayni's utterly defeatist words that are the depressing element: to think ANY arm of the media has that power to tell us what we believe, what we feel, etc. And in no way does "coverage" of anything determine popular sentiment.

281 253 The saddest thing about 9-11 is how much the terrorists have won. Criticism of Islam is "hate speech." Western governments turn a blind eye to rape and genital mutilation. An American president declares "The Future shall not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam." The Muslim Brotherhood on the march. Iran given billions to continue Islamic Terrorism. Lots of winning for the Islamic Supremacists

One of the women co-bloggers on Insty's site has a piece up about how she went to France recently, and on the the way back she (and a bunch of other older white Europeans) were stopped and taken out of the line and made to go through extra security procedures. Meanwhile, young Muslim men were going through the line with no problem, nobody stopping and questioning or searching them.

Oh, and the people doing the security checks on the older white European passengers? All Muslims.

286 I remember 9/11.

When I was a rookie in the burn house, pulling on my pants crammed down over my boots , turnout out coat, airpack and helmet, throwing the "high-rise pack" on my shoulder and climbing those damn stairs again and again.

Fast forward to 2001.
Working as a computer geek, watching "Drudge Report" and realizing that something was terribly wrong.

We turned on the office tv. And watched those guys throwing the "highrise pack" on their shoulders. And being so proud of these American guys determined to get to that top floor.

And then watching it fall.

297 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

301 I made it a point to get up early today and watch the remembrances on C-Span. All those names.
My wife was a corporate travel agent and had people on those flights out of Boston. Really screwed her up bad. Families are calling her and what's she gonna tell them, the obvious? Ended up leaving the business.
A few years later we're in NYC and take the tour of the Intrepid. They have a 9/11 exhibit on the and one of the items was a wrecked window from one of the planes. And she fell apart. "What if one of my people was looking out that window when they hit?"
So I take 9/11 pretty personally. Mainly because of what it did to her.

Several of us who were secularist learnt, on 9/11, that there were worse fundamentalists out there. Johnson got out there early as a secularist who realised this.

Also his site was very well-coded. (By 2001 standards). So it looked professional.

Also also he had curated a community of very well-informed and intelligent people. (This was long before that fuckwit 'zimriel' showed up...)

We have Ace now.

Are we going to continue to pretend it's not about Islam? Are we going to keep insisting that "Islam is a religion of peace"? Are we still going to tiptoe around Muslims and treat them as the "real" victims of terrorist attacks?

What is it going to take? How many more Americans are going to have to die before we face reality?

317 On naval antiflash:

Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward, who commanded the Royal Navy force which took back the Falklands, described the combat scenes in his CIC as otherworldly.

Everyone, including Woodward himself, was wearing Nomex hoods and smocks, gauntleted gloves, goggles, and protective cream on any skin that might be exposed by movement.

And as accounts of the RN ships that were hit by Argentine bombs and Exocet indicate, everyone bitched bitterly about having to wear that heavy clumsy weird stuff, but they were happy afterwards that they had worn it.

Not to mention legally harassing people when it suits those in power.

Like me in Las Vegas. I would offer to let SMFH bunk with me but I have queen beds.

355 I felt so ashamed that I had forgotten it was 9-11. With all the shouting about Irma and our own family chaos, it completely slipped my mind. I made myself watch the video's of the news coverage that day, this morning when I got up. We cannot ever forget that day and those people that died. We cannot ever forget that the evil that conceived that plan is still out there and want us dead. I needed to remember that and the emotion we felt watching it all happen. We saw the people jumping out of the buildings, we couldn't even imagine it. My husband and I cried because we knew nothing would ever be the same for anyone.

372 "At Newark airport today waiting for my for my flight. An F16 took off. From Newark airport."

There were a couple of F/A-18s parked on the apron at Moffett Federal Airfield the other day. I didn't get the tail flashes so I couldn't make them as Navy or USMC. Since the Marine Hornet fleet is barely airworthy, I presume Navy.

I notice from time to time certain strange air movements around here by dot-mil metal, but that's the only thing I have observed recently.

375 "A repeat lesson we should have learned from Viet Nam!"

The average liberal at the time of Viet Nam thought that even if we have political disagreements at home, the Communists were so clearly odious that we should be able to unite against them.

The average liberal at the time of 9/11 thought that even if blah blah blah, the freakin' Taliban etc etc.

Trump needs to understand that the enemy is living right here and teaching at the universities.

For all our troubles, we are still the most free and most prosperous and most wonderful nation in history. I am grateful to God that I was born an American. I hope I never take this great treasure for granted. Love you all.

From Newark airport. I think I was the only one near me who reacted.
Prolly the NJ airguard. Flew over my house at tree top level on 9/11.

The evening of 9/11 I was cooking on the grill (ya still gotta eat right?) and an F-15 took off from Otis AFB on the Cape on full afterburner. One of the loudest things I've ever heard. Finally saw him about a minute later, climbing and headed west. Glad he was up there.

382 Hey J.J. Sefton-

I saw your post about Kathy Moran in the previous thread. I wanted you to know she was an employee at my company (long before I started), and she was beloved. People still talk about her enthusiasm, and recall how her laughter filled a room.

In 2002 the company created a prestigious community service/citizenship award in honor of her and three other of our employees who were killed that day while working in our NY field office in the towers. The company also planted a memorial garden. We moved into a new HQ building last year here in Illinois, and they transplanted the 16-year-old maple and the other plants to the new site in an even more prominent and attractive setting. Today we had a rededication ceremony and it was really beautiful. Cynic that I've become, I was floored and nearly moved to tears when near the end of the ceremony a bagpipe issued forth with "Amazing Grace".

It has not always been a smooth ride at our company, but they have always placed a very high priority on this award and honoring Kathy and the others' memory. For that I've always been grateful.

Thanks and it's good to know Tillly's Story is still out there.

It's also good to know your company is honoring the memory of Kathy Moran and the other 9/11 victims.

The only good thing the NY Times has done in a long time is publish those brief obits of the 9/11 victims.

384 373 And the worst part of it all is that I can't comprehend that all of our betters don't react the same way that I do."

Imagine this: there are more New Yorkers who hate Trump more fervently than they do Islamic terrorists - after 9/11. there are New Yorkers who think Confederate statues and "white supremacists" are a bigger threat than ISIS - after 9/11.

The mind boggles.
