Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The business changes. The technology changes. The team changes. The team members change. The problem isn't change, per se, because change is going to happen; the problem, rather, is the inability to cope with change when it comes. Kent Beck

Quote II

I am not now
That which I have been.
Lord Byron

Quote III

Faced with problems and disappointments, many people will try to escape from their responsibility: escape in selfishness, escape in sexual pleasure, escape in drugs, escape in violence, escape in indifference and cynical attitudes. But today, I propose to you the option of love, which is the opposite of escape. Pope John Paul II

Quote IV

"We know what real democracy constitutes; we understand its implications. It means the rule of law for the leaders as well as the people. It involves limitations on the power of the state over the people. It means orderly debate and meaningful votes. It means liberation of the captive people from the thralls of a ruling elite that presumes to know the people's good better than the people." Ronald Reagan

No one wants to kill you Maxine. We only want to give you a G-D Damn functioning brain.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Wednesday asked terror experts for answers on how to combat the rise of white nationalists, as she has been fielding death threats from extremists.

“What can we do to deal with the KKK, the white nationalists, the extremists, the alt-right?” Waters, who serves as ranking member of the House Committee on Financial Services, asked during a Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance hearing. “They’re on the internet, they’re Breitbart. If you look at the YouTube, you see how much they want to kill me and others. What can we do?”

There is software now that can be used as gaydar.

The program found that gay men and women tended to have gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles. That means that both their chosen features and their biologically determined features are less like straight members of their gender, and often more masculine in women and more feminine in men.

Just thinking out loud here. Presently, they can determine whether or not an unborn baby has Downs Syndrome and abortions take place because of this. Is the next medical advance to develop a test for gayness? If a fetus is aborted because it has Downs I can see a fetus being aborted because it is Gay.

My, my, my what will the Pro-Choice Abortion Lobby do?

What are your shopping choices? Do you ever visit thrift stores? If so, Do you come across prime finds like these?

I've been known to hit up the local St. Vinnie's for paperbacks that run $1.65 and hardbacks that go for $2.65.

My coffee? Black and bitter like my life please. But, some of you like your coffee like you are, SWEET. Do you use sugar? Do you use artificial sweeteners? Debunking the "facts" about artificial sweeteners.

To any of you who have been around here for a while, what’s the first rule of bullshit detection?

Okay, other than ‘if you can smell it on your shoe, get a towel’?

My rule is: If you have to ask, it’s probably bullshit.

Doesn’t it just smell like bullshit that low calorie sweeteners all seem to keep being blamed for the same cluster of problems, and they’re not chemically similar at all? There’s no good reason to suspect they’re causing the same issues solely based on this shared perceived property of making iced coffee taste like a butterfly punching you in the tongue… lovingly.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance. Baffle them with bull shit. 10 tips to appear smarter.

It’s great to be smart, but intelligence is a hard thing to pin down. In many cases, how smart people think you are is just as important as how smart you actually are.

As it turns out, intelligence only explains about 20% of how you do in life; much of the other 80% comes down to emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is a skill that’s so important that 90% of top performers in the workplace have high EQs and people with high EQs make $28,000 more annually than those with low EQs.

Regulatory overreach? Oh no, not with our Uncle Sam.

"RJR and its recruiting agents relied on the resume guidelines under which RJR hired almost exclusively younger individuals to fill [its] positions," the agency said in a brief filed to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. "The Commission has long interpreted this language to authorize disparate-impact-based challenges to practices adversely affecting applicants.

The court rejected that argument, saying the Age Discrimination in Employment Act only applied to current, rather than prospective, employees.

"The whole text of the Act makes clear that an applicant for employment cannot sue an employer for disparate impact because the applicant has no ‘status as an employee,'" the ruling said.

The next time you see some Leftist with a Che Guevara or Fidel Castro t-shirt, ask them why they support the persecution of gay people.

For years, Cuba was not very friendly to homosexuals – i.e., concentration camps for gays and segregation of people with HIV.

About 20 years ago, Reynaldo Arenas wrote his memoirs and reminded the world that homosexuality is a crime in Cuba, and he was one of the many exhibits of that repression.

From masking agent to delicious dessert topping.

At first glance, nothing seems particularly odd about the December 1896 edition of The Druggists Circular and Chemical Gazette, a catalog of products that any self-respecting pharmacy ought to carry. But look closer: Hiding among medical necessities like McElroy's glass syringes and Hirsh Frank & Co's lab coats, you’ll find some more curious finds—including Hershey's cocoa powder.

I've gotten small wooden tables to use as plant stands or lamp stands. I've also bought lamps and planters. I've found small appliances that appeared to be new. My guess with the appliances, such as Mr. Coffee's, is that they were gifts that laid around for awhile, then the owner did some house cleaning and just donated them.

95 Hey everybody. Shared this previously a few threads ago:

Got a haircut at Supercuts earlier today and while I was waiting for my cut, I read their new copy of Star Magazine in the lobby. (Please don't laugh.)

Anyway, interestingly enough, learned two interesting celebrity facts while reading:

- Ashley Judd has had WAY too much botox; so much in fact, her fact looks like Chucky's. Was hilarious to see. Supposedly even her friends think she looks like a freak right now.

- And, Cher, the 98-year old singer and former wife of Sonny, who has Twitter meltdowns on an almost daily basis nowadays, keeps a "Dirty Harry-sized" .357 magnum in her bedroom. Why aren't I surprised that besides everything else, she's a screeching 2A hypocrite??

And finally... didn't hear about this in Star, but I just read at another movie site that Jennifer Lawrence *needs* her new flick, 'mother!', to be a hit... yet it looks like 'It' will eat all its oxygen. Here's hoping it's a yuge flop and that Ms. "Mother Nature" can't get any gigs to save her life other than quickly-cancelled sitcoms within a few years.

Van Halen did do an outstanding cover of You Really Got Me. But the original recording can't be topped, not even by The Kinks live. The VH version goes great, but is let down by the guitar solo, which does not suit the song, even as VH do it. Dave Davies original solo is perfect.

119 The over-arching question is whether America is to be ruled by those who (obviously) have no particular competence in administration or business acumen, nor understanding what it's like to be poor, or raise a family, or serve in the military, a deep understanding of history and Western Civilization. It really is a curious state of affairs. Leadership, and role models is virtually absent. Sure, many "policy makers" have gone to what once were the finest achools - maybe they still are - but.. And of course they are nothing if not credentialed; but they are usually too smart by half. They like to intone about a "concerning" rise of anti-intellectualism - but the fact is the ignorant hick rubes in flyover country aren't as stupid as one might think. Far from it - the self-ordained "elite" are in most cases nothing of the sort, they are quacks, pseudo-intellectuals, grifters and spoilers. And they know it.

It's uncanny. I just thought she was going with that awful short haircut trend that's the hot thing with women now.

My first jobs were working for my Dad's cousin bailing hay at age 13 and working on my uncle's shrimp boat as a deckhand. I never minded working because it made me feel independent and it was nice always having money. And I learned life lessons from my relatives that have lasted to the present. The best part of working on the shrimp boat was eating my uncle's fried shrimp that was swimming in the Gulf just minutes before. He'd tell us about his time on the carrier Lexington in World War dealing with a torpedo hit that nearly sunk her and a Kamikazee hit that killed several. And of corse he told us about the two typhoons.

149 Doesn't it just smell like bullshit that low calorie sweeteners all seem to keep being blamed for the same cluster of problems, and they're not chemically similar at all? There's no good reason to suspect they're causing the same issues solely based on this shared perceived property of making iced coffee taste like a butterfly punching you in the tongue ... lovingly.

I don't know. They're all trying to fool your body into the same initial reaction. That is certainly a physical commonality.

Personally, I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners and I am exceedingly suspicious of anything that someone claims gives you something for nothing. Fooling the body causes reactions, no doubt. Everythig has a cost and effects.

But I don't care if people snort Equal by the handful and end up with Super Cat 7 diabetes and grow testicles on their earlobes. That's their choice.

And shits in the academic community have come forth saying that he should be granted bail, because he's "distinguished" and really not such a bad dude. Too bad about that nothing little hairdresser that got stabbed 70 times.

168 So, somewhat long term music related trauma resolved.

When guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple, I really was not keen on Deep Purple any more. And they used to be one of my favorite bands.

Well a week ago I saw part of the Deep Purple concert, and they were... really, REALLY meh. Kind of like a cover band of excellent musicians. It made me sad that I grew out of them.

Then for sh*ts and giggles, I found out the Ritchie Blackmore reformed Rainbow and is on tour in Europe. And covering some Deep Purple songs.

That's when I found out, it's not Deep Purple that I like. It's Ritchie Blackmore. Who, IMHO, is a more clever guitarist than the band's current guy, Steve Morse.

/thank you for your time, please resume your regularly scheduled conversation

Exactly. Your brain can be fooled by many different optical illusions. They all take advantage of certain quirks in how the brain processes imagery. So why wouldn't various artificial sweeteners similarly fool the brain into thinking "Hey, I just got a sugar hit". ? I think research has proven exactly that happens. The body ups insulin production, but there's no damn sugar to process.

231 I've done a lot of reading lately about the Indian Wars in North America.

Atrocities by Indians against settlers are documented copiously. See, e.g., The Great Sioux Rebellion of 1862. However... information and photos about those & similar Indian outrages have somehow been disappeared from the 'Net by and large.

Army atrocities against the Indians are equally well documented, but information and photos of THOSE atrocities are ubiquitous.

In fact, when you search for "Indian massacres of settlers," or some variation of that search, you get "re-directed" to stories about Wounded Knee somehow.

It seems to me that the disappearing Confederate statues may be just the beginning.

Yeah the stuff is out there but its not easy to find. I think it may be a combination of search engines pulling up what people are searching for most (that is, its an algorithm doing its job more than deliberate bias) but a lot of the sources for that kind of thing like museums, universities, and historical societies are run by the radical freakies so... probably a lot being pulled, too.

248 but I just read at another movie site that Jennifer Lawrence *needs* her new flick, 'mother!', to be a hit... yet it looks like 'It' will eat all its oxygen. Here's hoping it's a yuge flop and that Ms. "Mother Nature" can't get any gigs to save her life other than quickly-cancelled sitcoms within a few years.

When are people in the movie industry going to understand that there are already a lot of reasons to not go to a movie theater? When people like Jenifer L and Meryl Streep flip the bird to half the country, it doesn't help.

336 The Indians are torrid right now but baseball is funny. The Dodgers went 43-7 over a 50 game span earlier this year but have now dropped ten straight.

Houston also looked like they were going to walk off with the pennant (the Indians have only now caught them despite that monster streak), but they can't seem to get anyone out to save their lives.

Not sure what to think at this point. And that's not even mentioning Boston and Washington who are also right there.

And succeed, in the end, in turning America into just another country - where history is a lie, mostly, and is buried in favor of things that make dumb people feel better, and/or give power to people with alien values. No doubt at all.

I can only imagine the absurdities that have been created to replace the actual history of native Americans (who of course aren't native, they just walked here before Europeans sailed here) with each other, such as it is known. You know - typical human behavior as seen throughout the world throughout history - conquest, empire, slavery, genocide.

Amazing how much can be thrown away in just one generation.

Classic moment when the interviewer was struck speechless - best "dead air", and *edited TV* air, for that matter - ever. Absolutely, the past must be changed to comport with modern sensibilities. The basic idea is that presumably a critical mass of people is cultivated that has no sense of history. Years ago they railed (and still do) against "rote learning", memorization of names, dates, and historical facts. They do not want a citizenry that has a command of facts, logic, and reason, people who can think for themselves, and are able to make independent decisions. Much of what's done is retroactive, or killing off the stragglers as it were.

Internet search engines - the whole dynamic changed some years ago. In the first decade of the workd wide web, search engine results were derived by software code that returned the most relevant results, and some other proprietary stuff I suppose. If you had a good web page, a lot of oeople would go there. This had the effect of making good websites even more popular. The first cracks started when websites were able to pay $$ to get their webpages in the first few pages of results. Then a few years later it all went to hell.

Even raw data, just information, is nearly impossible to effectively search, at least the way it was in earlier years. Whatever magic they had in the search algorythm code has been expunged, in favor of page after page of useless advertising. Bahstids.

This is the bit that the left does not grok (and sadly, too many tribals now). The tribes in North America were pretty evil to each other on a regular basis, sometimes even eating each other. There were many, many more tribes in the great plains before certain tribes like the Sioux and Blackfoot, Crow, etc got horses. There is evidence all over the Southwest of peaceful agricultural nations that were obliterated by hostile, warlike ones.

They were awful to each other. That doesn't make what settlers did any less awful but it does give some perspective. That whole "oh the Indian didn't understand lies" "oh the Indian always kept his word" thing was just a bunch of romanticized bullcrap.

It turns out you don't need big brother to subjugate a culture. You just have to convince them that its cool.

433 Yeah what we did to the native tribes in America wasn't genocide. There was no deliberate, systematic attempt to obliterate a race. It was war over land. We won, they lost. Largely because they were stone age splintered tribes with idiotic superstitions and nonsense religions.

If they want to call it cultural genocide, I gently point them to what is being done to American culture right freaking now. Somehow its a grand evil to destroy anyone's culture... except American traditional Judeo-Christian culture.

Indians killed each other just for stuff. Settlers brought civilization. Most Indians existing today through the Americas have nothing but European contact to thank, since without Europeans here the Indians were never advanced enough to have more than the sparsest population on the continents. Now, there are tens of millions - probably well over 100 million. Most of them would not even exist if there had never been contact.

That whole "oh the Indian didn't understand lies" "oh the Indian always kept his word" thing was just a bunch of romanticized bullcrap.

As I've occasionally noted since then, despite the fact that there are plenty of individuals that seem ready and willing to slaughter mutants en masse once the mutants exit the womb, the idea of testing for and slaughtering mutants while they're still in the womb doesn't seem to have ever occurred to anyone.

476 IMHO part of the reason Vegas has been hurting so bad for a while now, is because of all of these new indian casinos here in Southern California.

And it makes perfect sense. Anyone here who's never been to Pechanga or Morongo, I recommend them. They're both very nice places and you'd never know you weren't in Vegas if you played in either one, except that there's absolutely no other casinos surrounding them; they're both basically stranded in exurban environments (though Pechanga is really close to the city of Temecula and right next to both a 2000s-era subdivision of homes as well as a 1970s-era subdivision).

The attitude of most SoCal folks at this stage is, why drive 5 hours to Vegas when I can get to Pechanga, San Manuel or Morongo in less than 2?

500 488 Cicero: I've been to all three major SoCal casinos, San Manuel, Pechanga and Morongo.

I like Pechanga the most. Morongo's not bad, just not big enough IMHO.

But San Manuel? I was disappointed. It is *much* more crowded and everything is packed much closer together, table games, slots, you name it. Ironically, San Manuel reminded me the most of my experience with *actual* Vegas casinos.

-------

I'm still open to trying some of the other ones, Pechanga is probably the most likely candidate.

It's the biggest and most successful SoCal casino, and you'll understand why when you get there; it's *huge.* Lots of games at variable limits, and slots from penny to high-limit. And in fact they're working right now to make it even bigger. It's spooky to think how much money it's making.

Probably, since many more French men crossed the Atlantic than French women.

I remember reading about early settlers in New Orleans complaining about the lack of women. The mother country sent over a bunch of girls who had been in a convent and apparently none of them were exactly dead ringers for Brigette Bardot

Kinda sucked from the women's POV too - here, we're putting you on a ship and sending you to a hot, humid, swampy backwater. But hey, you'll get husbands there!

Well, I guess both the men and the women settled for what they could get....

In New England there was a preponderance of settlers who were looking to practice their non-conforming religion on their own. New Hampshire I believe was started as resettling area for English Catholics. Virginia and the Carolinas were settled as commercial ventures - to begin with for tobacco and later for rice and indigo.

What I find surprising is how many of the great lights of American colonization were also great lights in the protestant reformation and later in the parliament and protestant side of the English civil war, and how little involvement the colonies had in that war.

Because, "they say": Bass Notes go directly to primal lizard monkey brain, and Barney Miller's theme song was pretty much built on one of the most driving bass riffs of any sitcom, ever!

That said, the one song that made my summer vacay between 1st & 2nd grade brains go *click* as to MUSIC, was Petula Clark and her tunes, "Downtown", and "Don't Sleep on the Subway" songs.

For the life of me, I canna 'splain. But I then, at that moment, realized WOMAN as a thing different than "little boy", and was, and have been, entranced ever since.

Juice Newton, in her prime, would've done it righteous.

Kelly Clarkson, leftie that she is, would KILL it.

But, the one I'd like to hear?

No argument, vocally. But, Gwen does not push the buttons.

Ms. Clark did, and at a young age when I was not supposed to know what "buttons", were.

Ms. Stefanie would lay down a studio effort, from which I would recognize the tune and appreciate the song. And instantly, forget.

I cannot name one single Stefani song, and I know her from The Voice. She's likeable. But she's far from memorable, at least to me.

That chick from Paramour? I'd pay to hear her sing the alphabet. She has THAT kind of voice.

Remember Alannah Myles singing Black Velvet?

One hit wonder. No other voice could've sang that song on that arrangement, and made it a hit.

She did.

That song might not have been explicit. But, it was DIRTY! In every good way, that.

Sometimes, an artist records a track that really, cannot be "covered".

This is almost a gospel truth, until one trips across Cash's cover of Hurt.

Have a safe day, y'all!

Are 110-180 winds really bullcrap ? How 'bout water effects (rain, surge, etc.) ?

Are you implying man has built so good, we can negate natures effects?

How much hype in too much ?

We can do a lot with reinforced concrete, but the rest of our infrastructure is not as strong.

Our models are weak. Look at the retrospective true path and the predictions. It should be humbling.

As always, human nature is the weak link. A community of 100% Amish would not have a problem after a disaster, because they are a strong trust society with great values. Most of America used to be like that, before the march through the institutions.

Appreciate response. And agree. Not the argument I saw put forth.

Impact of nature is always questionable. Location, duration, intensity, etc. To call it bullcrap is not a good place to start trying to make it through.

Perhaps Most of America used to be like that, before the march through the institutions.

My, my, my what will the Pro-Choice Abortion Lobby do?"

There'll be two answers:

1. Some abortions are more choice-y than others.

2. Homosexuality is an autonomously chosen lifestyle choice. Totally undetermined. (This is already becoming more common; since Obergefell they no longer need the "100% innate" myth.)

I see the Googlez has a tiny 9-11 remembrance ribbon up.

I still have the red white & blue ribbon, fastened with a small flag pin, that I wore on 9/12 and for weeks after. A lady who worked afternoon shift in another office in the building I worked in at the time brought in reels of the ribbon and made them for everyone in the building.

The problem with coffee is that you need coffee before you make it.
