Portrait of Laura Battiferri
Agnolo Bronzino

I think Laura is neck and neck with yesterday's lovely contestant, but the artist seems a bit fishy to me....

26 .If the Fed was serious about reducing the debt they could start selling
some of the friggin vacant land they have all over the Country. While
it won't happen they could start selling off chunks and put those
proceeds against the debt. Some estimates put the value of the land the
Fed owns at over $100 Trillion.
===========
Someone long ago here pointed out why this will never happen is the same reason that there is so much federal land in the first place--because if that land was open for settlement, the central and western states would eventually have greater populations than the coastal states, reducing their power.

We can get it done if the dress it up as reparations--40 acres sold to the highest bidder and 40 acres given to a black slave descendant, land plots and recipients chosen by lottery.

Within 5 years, all that land will be in the hands of the industry and industrious anyway.

29 Willowed from that last thread:

As of 2014, the net financial position of the US govt was -$11.5T.

That does not count the god-awful unfunded liabilities. That is just the sum of it's assets minus it's current liabilities.

State and local govt. together have a positive position of around $7T or some. The whole damn country, private and everything is supposed to sum to about $124T.

But that's just on paper. If one tried to sell all that at once, the price would go to zero.

39 Bronzino was a Mannerist. Mannerism is a style that rose in the mid-16th century, after the High Renaissance played itself out. Mannerism takes the classical rules of art revived by the Renaissance and twists and plays with them. In a Mannerist work, there is always something "off" about it. The term comes from the idea that this art was stylish, chique for the new generation of taste-makers. Mannerism would eventually evolve into Baroque.

Bronzino was one of the style's standouts. He seemed to like hands. Here is one of his more famous works. The meaning of this one is quite arbitrary. While looking at this, keep in mind that Cupid is Venus' son.

It is definitely a deliberate gesture, to spread the fingers that widely. As was noted above, the content is therefore significant to the painter and subject.

In regards to paying off the national debt, along with a lot of other things, the U.S. has trillions of actual hard assets it has no business owning.

Time to get rid of them.

However, it would be impossible to sell substantial amounts of these assets without coming up with a creative way to deal with it.

I suggest a new agency, similar to Freddy Mac, that places realistic values on the assets, sells, holds and administers them for up to 100 years, but makes the capital available immediately for paying off debt.

Yes, it's a bit of transactional magic, but the theory is sound enough for the world to buy it. Money is made available but backed by hard assets.

Of course that's not the point I was making. So I shall limit it thusly: If you are a fopping rich dude or dame, and you want to pay some famous artist to paint your portrait, then that's the artist's day job, what he does to pay his rent. It's not really art.

Art is the stuff he does because he's inspired, REGARDLESS of whether his ego is involved, or the patron's ego is involved.

Further, I am well aware that if I suggest ALL portraits are not art, I am... well, painting with too broad a brush.

Heh. 'zactly. Some of my favorite historical stories revolve around Michelangelo getting pissy when someone criticizes him or his work.

Example: when he was finishing the David, the gonfaloniere of Florence Pier Soderini (basically, the mayor), came into the workshop and admired the statue and was effusive with compliments. At least until he noted that there was only one flaw: the nose was too big.

Michelangelo just nodded angrily (probably hadn't been paid yet), grabbed his hammer and chisel and climbed the scaffolding, after palming some marble dust. Using his body to screen Soderini's view, Mike begins working.

Tap-tap-tap. *drops some dust* Tap-tap-tap. *drops some dust*

The chisel never came within an inch of the statue.

Mike climbs down to stand before Soderini, who grins and exclaims "See? I was right! It looks MUCH better!"

Not to mention the lovely soda tax now in effect in Cook/Crook County Illinois - a penny per ounce adds up fast. Not to mention it is charged on sugar/corn syrup/diet drinks - basically anything besides water or 100% juice.

And the city of Chicago charges an extra tax on bottled water so you can't even get that without paying extra.

https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/275297/

The polls and the Hillary campaign used a voting model that assumed that the lower the education level of the voter, the lower the turnout percentage for them. Since Hillary voters were heavily skewed toward those with advanced degrees this skewed the polls for her.

In their, the polls, defense this turnout model had likely been correct in the previous two (or more) Presidential elections as the candidates that ran had little appeal to working class voters, many of whom have little time to stand in line to vote on a Tuesday and so have to have some good reason to do so.

There are a lot of Mike getting pissy stories out there. A favorite of mine was when he was painting the Last Judgement. One of the cardinals complained about all the nudity. Mike painted his portrait as donkey-eared Minos, the gatekeeper of Hell.

And another of Mike's critics was painted into the Last Judgement as St Bartholomew (who was martyred by flaying), holding the skinners knife and a flayed skin. The skin has Michelangelo's face, in fact his only known self-portrait.

The Chinese did that for any businesses employing more than X number of people during one of their downturns, the government was scared of unemployment. Which led to the situation of more than a few business owners secretly wiring all of their funds to Macao and laundering them through the gambling houses there, while they drained all of their companies accounts of cash and bought as many supplies as they could on credit.

Then, the evening before that months payroll checks were to be handed out, the owners and top managers would all bug out for Macao (and presumably Singapore next) while the workers would try to cash their checks and would find out that ever account owned by the company had a zero balance, and everyone connected to management had disappeared. Oh, and there were no orders for any raw materials to be processed, because all the credit had finally been tapped out.

Kind of a real life "atlas shrugged" scenario.

268 Like many, Cleveland State Universitys Turning Point USA chapter wanted to recognize the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. So members of the pro-capitalist student group gathered Sunday evening to chalk a memorial onto the sidewalks of the public universitys campus, an exhibit that included an American flag with the words No day shall erase you from the memory of time under it.

However, the artistic memorial didnt last long. Hours after it was created, the university removed it. An image tweeted by Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, shows a maintenance employee washing away the memorial with a power washer this morning.

When we asked why he was destroying our tribute to the victims of 9/11, [the employee] informed us that he had been ordered to do so by the universitys Director of Facilities Maintenance, Shehadeh Abdelkarim, Roberts said.

Roberts added the employee also told her the memorial was being erased because there is no chalk allowed on campus.

Funny this should come up.

I was in a Six Sigma Green Belt class earlier this year. One of the participants was an employee of CSU Environmental Services. In the course of the class, one had to take a problem from their workplace and Six Sigma it.

According to the guy in the class and the data he presented, CSU's maintenance process were really AFU - things not getting done, long time to get things done, requests being ignored, etc.

But I see they were able to expedite the scrubbing of this memorial. Interesting.

308 ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A Maryland judge ordered the state bar to open an investigation Monday into the three lawyers who helped former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delete her private emails.

Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr. said the complaints lodged against David E. Kendall, Cheryl Mills and Heather Samuelson were egregious and the state bar couldn't dismiss them as frivolous.

"There are allegations of destroying evidence," Judge Harris said at a hearing Monday morning.

He said the state's rules require the bar to conduct investigations no matter who raises the complaint and can't brush aside accusations.

Ah, you see, if you are merely dealing with a capitalist who raises prices, you have several options:
i) go somewhere else
ii) plan ahead so as to avoid the need of going to him
iii) do without (if possible)

This is government. When it goes bad, you are still coerced into dealing with it. This is infinitely worse than dealing with one guy who decides to raise prices.

Nonsense.

You come back here someday with this much vitriol for the House and Senate leadership, and you might be taken seriously.

Maybe.

Well, if you're a white Christian conservative man, you already are.

We're just waiting for them to declare all white Christian conservative women Nazis.

Now, a fun fact I learned in the comments at JihadWatch: according to the Suras, mohammad, along with being a pedophile, is identified as being WHITE.

Which might be fun to use in anonymous facebook arguments.

/if all white men are hitler, then mohammad was hitler too?

428 Here in Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner wants a "temporary" property tax increase to pay for city equipment damaged by Harvey.

431 The House passed bill that includes $15.25 billion in aid for
hurricane Harvey damage. Is it wrong to assume that some portion of that
$15 billion can likely be used by Houston to replace whatever so that
they don't need to implement a temporary (LOL) property tax?
=====

I am ruefully chuckling that the mayor must beg for his very own money. You know those federal and state funds require audits and nitpicky stuff like that. How much did Nagin get out of Katrina?

436 I read an article about sales tricks a little while ago, I forget in what context.

But here are a couple that apply to the Trump deal with the Dems.

People are more willing to buy when they got something free.

And they are more willing to work with you once they have done something for you.

Trump made Pelosi and Schumer deal with him. He gave them something free - their first ask on the deal, 3 months. And here is the thing - the Dems were asking for something smaller than the Republicans were willing to do - they wanted 18 months of CR and debt ceiling increase!

Now they have made a deal with him, they can no longer go on the "we are so totally principled that we could never deal with Not Our President!"
