Massive, Massive Data Breach at Credit Reporting Firm Equifax May Reveal Private Information, Including Social Security Numbers, About Almost Every Adult in America

143 million may now be exposed to full-on identity theft (and theft of actual money, I'd assume).

Credit reporting firm Equifax says cybersecurity incident could potentially affect 143 million US consumers

Equifax said data on 143 million U.S. customers was obtained in a breach
The breach occurred on July 29

Personal information including birth dates, credit card numbers and more was obtained in the breach

Equifax Inc., which supplies credit information and other information services, said Thursday that a cybersecurity incident could have potentially affected 143 million consumers in the U.S.

...

Equifax said it discovered the breach on July 29. "Criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files," the company explained.

Leaked data includes names, birth dates, social security numbers, addresses and potentially drivers licenses. 209,000 U.S. credit card numbers were also obtained, in addition to "certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers."

...

Equifax said it is now alerting customers whose information was included in the breach via mail, and is working with state and federal authorities. Its private investigation into the breach is complete.

You can sign up for credit monitoring at www.equifaxsecurity2017.com -- I assume this will be offered freely to those Equifax has helped harm. But I don't know.

This is enormous.

If a foreign power is discovered to be behind this... I don't even know what would come next.

30 Also... my guess is that if this happened in May, your info is already out there.

That would mean that people have already been a victims of identity theft due to this.

Unless it's a state actor. That's a different story entirely.

And if people don't come out and say they were already victims of this, perhaps that can be assumed.

Also.. my guess is that EVERYONE who has been a victim of identify theft in the past will be so again, because you are told to report said theft to the three monitoring agencies. So if at any time you've dealt with them, my guess is you're at risk.

My guess is that people that were using Equifax are the ones most vulnerable. May be how Equifax discovered the problem. But I'm spitballin'. I doubt we'll ever get the real story. And I see lawsuits.

104 Ace, the whole credit system is a house of cards... everyone is vulnerable. There is no digitized system that is hack proof, and what cyber security is, is trying to keep one step ahead of black hats.

I assume my information is going to be compromised, on a regular basis.

I have had 6 credit breaches in 14 years, resulting in the reissuance of cards and so forth. Not once did I do anything to put myself at risk... besides using my credit.

105 Do not get LifeLock or any other credit monitoring service. Freeze your credit at Equifax, TransUnion and Experian immediately. The freeze process is very secure. DO IT NOW.
My husband and I froze our credit a while back, along with our eldest son, and it works as we have found out a few times while making major purchases.

Easy to be sarcastic, better to take what precautions you can.

Our governor has called for a mandatory evacuation of all coastal counties beginning at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, and they'll make the lanes on I-16 contra going west. be safe, Jane.

It's weird, my marine biologist brother said he was thinking something's just not right a month or so ago.

He installed:

professional storm shutters including a new storm garage door

AND a built-in generator, that he'll lock up from access if he evacuates

The only thing he won't be able to prevent is flooding, and tree falls. But the shutters won't allow any looters in the windows and patio door.

Amazing timing.

We don't have storm shutters, and our biggest fear is trees in the roof, and now storm surge which we didn't have last year. Our driveway and garage is 14 1/2' above sea level, and the house is raised about 4 1/2 feet from that. So the garage would get water if there's a surge.

The "Rachel form card holder services" calls has been going on for years, it's a robocall scam and always on my cell. But I have also gotten a bunch of calls from a few credit collection places looking for a guy with the same name I have who lives about 10 miles away. They also called my wife's cell looking for the other "me". It took forever to get them to quit calling as I had to keep explaining it wasn't me, it was some guy with the same name but like 25 years older than me. They finally stopped but it was a bit unnerving to say the least!

I just bought a car a few weeks ago, paid cash. I wasn't allowed to take the car home, they wanted me to take a loan, get verified though one of their credit agencies, and then if the check had any issues, they could then just process my loan.

I refused that for a variety of reasons and asked if they could just verify funds at the bank, they said no.
After all sorts of hoops, finally was able to process the transaction the next day. But it was a nightmare all because I refused to go through a credit agency.

You and I are pretty much the same on this.

I wish I could be cash-only 100% of the time, but in the modern world it is pretty much impossible to travel without a credit card. Most airlines REQUIRE a credit card to buy tickets, for security reasons. And things like AirBnB and Uber do as well. And many hotels insists on a credit card number as a "security deposit." I suppose it might be possible to exclusively stay in dive hotels that accept cash, but wouldn't be too pleasant.

So I can in and do some things with a credit card.

Yes, that is what I eventually had to do. The only way I could get the transaction done.

I'm not so much upset at that, but the idea I had to get a loan in order to do a "cash" deal was infuriating.

It was a local, Wells Fargo bank they could have simply called a put a hold on the check. I used to work at a bank and verifying funds was done all the time.

But now you can't even do cash deals without them forcing you through a credit agency.

332 Stupid question. I'm no cybersecurity expert, but I know that there are two types of encryption: reversible (with a key) and a hash (one way encryption).

If Equifax is mainly a back end that other institutions use (rather than something most people would use directly) it seems that they could have stored peoples' information using a one way hash (SHA-256). If the client bank needs to send information to Equifax, they would encrypt the data, and if it matches what is on file, that file would be updated. However, if someone hacks the data (SSN's, Card#s, driver's license, etc.) they would be (practically) unable to unencrypt it. What kind of encryption was Equifax using?

No one wants to deal with cash (dollar bill) transactions over $10k, its a huge pain in the balls -- IRS and FBI reporting and nonsense like that.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear
===

Short and most likely answer?

It doesn't matter. Decryption is hard and requires time and big computing power.

And while they may have encrypted the network traffic that the data traveled in , the database was most likely unencrypted. And there was likely a set of unencrypted passwords somewhere on a drive.

And then there's social engineering.

The weakest link is humans.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at September 07, 2017 06:24 PM (wmaTe)

This had nothing to do with encryption or emails. According to the article they got access through a web form which means that they likely just typed in some SQL code (with the appropriate quotes and such) and when that data was being parsed it unlocked a whole bunch of shit.

This is a standard hack that everyone in the world knows about - it's called a SQL-injection hack, and every website in the world knows that they have to check or clean the website form data before they push it to their database. This is so fundamental that it really defies belief that they built a website without taking this into account - especially for a company that has its fingers all over people's most private data, whether those people like it or not.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair

That's not really how it works (the breach, that is). The web app was most likely simply the initial foothold, allowed the attackers to perform Remote Command Execution, which then allows the attacker to upload an exploit payload of their own which they can then execute, which allows the attacker to escalate privileges, which then allows unfettered access or at least the ability to exfil the data. That's a simplistic summary, but I can guarantee the web app itself was not the only weak link, there were a series of vulnerabilities exploited in a chain.

I look forward to seeing specifically how it happened. I would imagine SANS Institute (sans.org for anybody interested in this stuff) will have a webcast about it within the week. (Also good for CPEs for anybody who needs ongoing annual security education credits, as well, lol).

So, they probably spoofed them into thinking they were a client... got read access to the database ...

Three Equifax Managers Sold Stock Before Cyber Hack Was Revealed
By Anders Melin - September 7, 2017, 5:59 PM EDT

Three Equifax Inc. senior executives sold shares worth almost $1.8 million in the days after the company discovered a security breach that may have compromised information on about 143 million U.S. consumers.

The credit-reporting service said late Thursday in a statement that it discovered the intrusion on July 29. Regulatory filings show that three days later, Chief Financial Officer John Gamble sold shares worth $946,374 and Joseph Loughran, president of U.S. information solutions, exercised options to dispose of stock worth $584,099. Rodolfo Ploder, president of workforce solutions, sold $250,458 of stock on Aug. 2. None of the filings lists the transactions as being part of 10b5-1 pre-scheduled trading plans.....

Equifax Inc shares were down 8.7 percent at $134.16 in after-market trading today after the hack was revealed.

403 damn. does anybody know how to do their goddamned job? After an identity theft scare I spent a full week in late July - five eight hour days = changing the passwords on every account, putting in security questions and credit freezes! If I have to do it again I will scream.

The IRS mailed me that they were fining me SIX times the amount of ACA tax I paid because I filed "totally wrong." (Who writes these letters, high school girls??)
No clarification of what the problem was.

I paid the right amount, on time, to the correct address; I guessed I should have paid electronically, so I called them to check. (Because it would be just like them to ding me for paying the fine wrong and ding me again.)

Guess what, I got to a reasonable person who looked up my records and said, "We made a mistake."
