...according to network insiders, her new role is prompting "questions internally about who her audience is exactly" as well as a sense of "total panic" concerning the intense media scrutiny that will unavoidably attend the launch of Megyn Kelly Today, to say nothing of the need to publicly vindicate NBC News Chairman Andy Lack’s $17 million gamble (reportedly her eye-popping annual compensation) when he wooed her away from Fox. ... "The Sunday show laid such an egg that any claims that she had automatic star power, to get people in the door to see what she was doing, have been disavowed," television news analyst Andrew Tyndall told The Daily Beast. "The stardom of the celebrity anchor was a phenomenon of the 1980s back when [flamboyant ABC News president] Roone Arledge was around. In this day and age, the shows make the anchors, not the other way around."Apparently the network has been trying to "soften" the image of this chilly Ice Queen and the blue glare of her Aryan Fury by showing her hiking with her second husband and first children and even strumming guitar (!!!) by the campfire. Can she project the image of a coldly analytic (and desperately careerist) "hard news woman" while also pretending to be a regular gal who likes puppies and S'more's and who you'd like to have your morning coffee with? Answer: No. You get one main brand in life. That brand may be false or exaggerated, but it's the one brand you get as far as a public persona. (In fact, you kinda only get one main persona in real life, too, even if that perceived persona is inaccurate and misses a lot.) So Megyn Kelly's attempt at Mom Jeans On/Mom Jeans Off will fail. Not because she's particularly terrible (though she's not terrific, as Trump would say). But just because she's trying to be a feathered fish -- a fish that can't swim, but also can't fly. And also, because she's annoying and she abandoned her core audience for a hostile liberal audience because Fox News personnel wouldn't take her side more in a personal dispute with a major political actor that the network is obligated to cover objectively.

I thought at first Martha would be solid but very reserved, tending toward establishment. But she has emerged as no wall flower ... she takes on the smears, seems to stand up for the average Joe.
She's also gorgeous, and has added some curls to that too straight hair look. She looked like a fun person in the shot of her at the Kentucky fair, but of course that ring on her finger costs more than my net worth probably, so she's not not quite "the country girl", but still seems down to earth.
She's from Buffalo, so more upstate than big city. Probably still a Bills fan. Go Martha go ... Megyn Who?

Yes, kind of came out of the blue for me. I did get emails from SP and Sal Army right away which I am fine with because I donate to them after disasters. Really nothing wrong with the Angels' group wanting to raise extra money to help veterans with rebuilding/relocating etc expenses either, it just surprised me a bit because they mostly send care packages to the troops and do things like buying I-pads or talk to text software for injured veterans.
None of them is doing the red cross thing and spending $$$ at FNM and Zuckerberg to advertise for folks to send $10 with a stupid text and then wonder why their cell phone bill is so high next month.

That was actually an interesting episode. The guy who set the thing up argues that Nazism was one of the strongest political philosophies of old earth. Spock supports the idea. Then Kirk points out that DEHUMANIZATION AND REPRESSION ARE INHERENT PARTS OF THIS SYSTEM (and socialism in general.)
It was a great episode that got to the heart of the matter, back when we knew who the real enemies were.

Costumes so bad they were good.
Although with the Mugato I didn't notice much since I was very focused on Nancy Kovacs' very ample cleavage in that mohair halter top and her fantastic ass in those skintight leather pants.
The Gorn looked like he should have stomped on a scale model of Tokyo as a warmup. The sight of Sulu running in a blind panic would have made it perfect. I got a kick out of Kirk chucking a boulder at the Gorn and it had all the stopping effect of a wad of Jello. The Gorn then picks up a boulder the size of a Buick and sails it like a Jay Cutler Hail Mary pass, but fortunately for Kirk it was just as accurate.

The thing was in TOS Shatner did not seem that hammy. The character was well written, so he came across as a passionate leader. It was contrasted by Spock and McCoy (and lets not forget the walls that Deforest Kelly picked out of his teeth in the old days.)

Shatner liked to speak dramatically. But yeah his character was much more rounded than what JJ-Trek created. Meyer talks on the TWOK commentary about how he would have Shatner do a scene repeatedly until Shatner wore down and wasn't punctuating every word.

We're both probably being overly generous with the 400 estimate. Education majors are the dumbest people in the university. They are even dumber than the sociology majors, which is pretty friggin dumb.
My nephew has been getting this common core shit. I've told him that his teachers were a bunch of retards who couldn't count to twelve with their shoes on but he thinks they are geniuses. Meanwhile, he was never forced to learn multiplication tables by rote and, basically, can't do shit in math. It's embarrassing. I tried to give him some private classes but he refused to do anything they weren't doing in that shit public school of his so I finally just gave up.

But I did not insist my kids memorize tables. I think it's a waste of time. If one's to move onto Algebra - it's counter-productive, in my humble opinion.
One must learn to count. Forward and backward. Then by multiples. By twos. Then threes. Then by intervals at random. Under stress - by me loudly insisting.
Then one can multiply by counting forward by groups with any set of numbers. Or divide by counting backward, as long as I set up a fraction without remainder.
I simply do not see how those basic functions can be memorized for Algebra ... because how in the fuck does anyone memorize tables for 3A - .5A = 5 ?
One must understand how the numbers FLOW. How they work - fluidly. How they interact.

After I had been out of school for about five years, I decide to go to grad school. Local university was offering a GRE refresher, and so I signed up.
Damn near the entire class was graduating Education majors. I was at least surprised. I mean hell, I'd been out of school for years, and a refresher made sense, but these people were just finishing up.
I know that we have teachers among us, so I'll except current company, but that was the least educated group of people I have encountered in educated company. It was...appalling.

Absolutely not. ONe must have certain operations burned into his memory in order to become "fluent" at math. Multiplication of single digits and up into the low double digits is a very important foundation that should be available to one without thinking.
There are certain "facts" that one needs to just "know" and the way you do that is by memorizing them through rote repitition.
If one's to move onto Algebra - it's counter-productive, in my humble opinion.

One must learn to count. Forward and backward. Then by multiples. By twos. Then threes. Then by intervals at random. Under stress - by me loudly insisting.
Then one can multiply by counting forward by groups with any set of numbers. Or divide by counting backward, as long as I set up a fraction without remainder.
I simply do not see how those basic functions can be memorized for Algebra ... because how in the fuck does anyone memorize tables for 3A - .5A = 5 ?
One needs to be facile with basic arithmentic. Then things you do in algebra become easier because you aren't confused, or don't have to waste time, trying to figure out the basic arithmetical parts.
When I taught calculus courses I used to have people who were not proficient at manipulating fractions. THey had passed all the earlier courses and they could figure problems with fractions out if they sat down and took a half hour but they weren't PROFICIENT and, as a result, became lost very easily - not because of the calculus but because of the more basic operations that they hadn't been drilled at enough to just "know".
One must understand how the numbers FLOW. How they work - fluidly. How they interact.

Sorry ... but that is meaningless, really. Numbers don't "flow" and no one on Earth "understands" numbers. You have a hard time even finding someone who is willing to define what a number is for you. I'm telling you this from a mathematician's point of view.
Kids need to be drilled with the basics, to start. They need to have certain simple operations at their mind's "fingertips", as it were. They need to be proficient at basic arithmetic. THey need to be given simple methods for working with numbers - long division, addition/subtraction by columns, ... This is the foundation for moving on in math, in any way, at all. They don't need to be taught to count backwards to do subtraction. That sort of stuff is beyond ridiculous and does absolutely nothing for the kids.
Kids in elementary school are not learning Number Theory. They are just learning a little bit about simple numbers. Number Theory doesn't come until college, and then only if they choose to study real math.

These are two techniques that one could teach kids to ape.

What point are you trying to make? Of course kids in elementary school should be learning other bases. When did I say that they shouldn't?
What I said was that there were things that have to be learned to the point of being ingrained in their minds and then it makes moving on to more complicated concepts that much easier.
You can change bases all you want but if the kids can't do regular arithmetic and aren't clear on simple ways to figure out arithmetical problems that they can't do in their heads then they sure as shit aren't going to be picking up artihmetic in base 7 very quickly. They'll be confused by the simple arithmetic that they don't really know and will never really get to understanding the new concept they are being taught.
The proof is all around. Math scores of Americans have not gone up while money has poured into the programs and they have been changed to all this "new math" bullshit. Guess what, at the grade school level there hasn't been any "new math" in hundreds of years. All we have are a lot of teachers who couldn't pass the math tests, themselves, having fun trying to confuse the kids with silly ways of calculating that they don't, themselves, thoroughly understand. And if you doubt me on this just go and look at the average GRE scores for intended education grads. You'll see how proficient they are at mathematics. I used to teach a lot of math ed majors. I've seen them, first hand.

An inelegant approach to the brute force approach which indicates that you are really decomposing the numbers, but the rote multiplication approach just seems far more efficient when all you want is the basic answer!
As an aside, I thought some aspects of common core were rather neat but the straightforward mechanical approach is still very useful in day to day life, which is where most of the students will be!

Multiplication tables should absolutely be memorized through at least 10-12 or so. Not being able to instantly know the answer to very basic operations involving small numbers will substantially slow down longer calculations. Memorization is a necessary skill that needs to be developed too. There are countless equations that students need to know and most of them will never even continue with math long enough to learn how to derive them.
You give basic algebra as an example, but that is honestly one of the perfect cases for having those tables memorized. Stopping to think for every little multiplication, division, or root reduces the time spent on understanding the new concepts being introduced. There's no reason that by the age of 10 a kid shouldn't be able to do simple multiplication faster than hitting a calculator.

My kids had Homework where they had to solve using traditional format long multiplication, then another set of problems similar to what you did (inside, outside, criss cross both ways, add them up), and another set using a diagonal matrix.
Forcing kids to do long multiplication using (at least) three different formats is not efficient.
And the criss cross method only works with two two digit numbers.

A deep understanding of the basic relationships of mathematics is not predicated on pure memorization. Nor is pure memorization a sure-fire path to understanding. One may skip basic wrote memorization of tables - if one is dedicated to counting by multiples before adding, or subtracting by multiples before attempting to divide.

The basic properties and rules of arithmetic are something else that needs to be drilled. They are taught them and then learn them by doing umpteen actual problems and seeing it all in action. Nothing in math is better than solving problem after problem after problem - by hand. That is something else that is lacking in the way they teach it these days. Shit, in France they declared homework "unfair" because the kids who did it had an advantage over the ones who didn't. That's no joke and we are moving very quickly in that direction.

They forget the basic rules of logic due to pressure? That's pretty much the entire point behind grade school math. If they don't understand that then their time was wasted.
Substitution is a good resource for verifying that you have the correct answer or when you don't know how else to proceed, but students should be drilled until they understand basic logic. It applies to far more than simple calculations with numbers.

Good for you. Sadly, any kid who wants a decent education from the public schools, these days, needs to have additional instruction at home. What they learn in the schools is close to worthless.

But they learned how to count quickly, by multiples. Because that's all that multiplication is.

That was one point I was making - it was an example. Don't even make pretend that you think that I was saying all of math comes down to learning multiplication tables by rote. I mean, really ...
But every crack in ones proficiency in math makes it that much more difficult to understand the next concept, which leads to more, larger cracks, which makes it harder to move further ... This ain't rocket science. Shit, it ain't even model rocket science.

My kids got it from the time I said "Quit worry about two times two ... count by twos. Now begin ..."
"Two ... Four ... Six ... Eight"
"Now count by twos for the first two numbers"
"Two ... Four"
"That's all 2x2 is baby. It's two plus two. Count by two for the first two."
It all gets real damn easy after that, Pop. Not my fault that it's not taught that way. But it works. Because that's all it is.
Drill the kids you teach however you want. But my way works. It worked with my kids, the two neighbor kids, and every other kid that ever asked for help.

That's not all multiplication is. That's merely one way of calculating - and not the most efficient or obvious, either. That is not a substitute for learning the multiplication tables. There's a huge difference between a kid who can tell you what 8*7 is in 1/10 of a second and one who needs to start at 7 (or
and count up multiples of 8 (or 7). HUGE.

Memorization should some either before or at the same time. You learn what multiplication is, you are shown some examples - i.e. the tables are built - and you are then to memorize them. ANd you are grilled, by time, on the tables. Not on doing multiplication but just knowing the tables. THere's no reason to put off memorizing the tables. You can do all the other stuff at the same time or right after.
But what we have in COmmon Core bullshit is a totally bullshit idea that memorization is EVIL and that's just totally retarded.
