Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Oh No: NBC Insider Says Network Is in "Total Panic" That Megyn Kelly's Show Will be an Historic FlopYeah, I said "an historic," and yeah, I knew it would bother you. That's right -- specifically you. You know who you are. That's why I resorted to such an historic article choice. You know what you did. Anyway, on to the funny-fun-fun-fun:Four weeks before the Sept. 25 debut of Megyn Kelly Today--the 9 a.m. replacement for the venerable morning show’s third hour, Today’s Take--some NBC insiders are expressing doubts, and even worries, about the network news division’s plan to scrap a reliable long-running program in order to morph the former Fox News anchor and Donald Trump nemesis into an accessible, female-friendly personality for an ethnically diverse daytime viewership. The network is officially chippy and chirpy, of course, but... ...according to network insiders, her new role is prompting "questions internally about who her audience is exactly" as well as a sense of "total panic" concerning the intense media scrutiny that will unavoidably attend the launch of Megyn Kelly Today, to say nothing of the need to publicly vindicate NBC News Chairman Andy Lack’s $17 million gamble (reportedly her eye-popping annual compensation) when he wooed her away from Fox. ... "The Sunday show laid such an egg that any claims that she had automatic star power, to get people in the door to see what she was doing, have been disavowed," television news analyst Andrew Tyndall told The Daily Beast. "The stardom of the celebrity anchor was a phenomenon of the 1980s back when [flamboyant ABC News president] Roone Arledge was around. In this day and age, the shows make the anchors, not the other way around."Apparently the network has been trying to "soften" the image of this chilly Ice Queen and the blue glare of her Aryan Fury by showing her hiking with her second husband and first children and even strumming guitar (!!!) by the campfire. Can she project the image of a coldly analytic (and desperately careerist) "hard news woman" while also pretending to be a regular gal who likes puppies and S'more's and who you'd like to have your morning coffee with? Answer: No. You get one main brand in life. That brand may be false or exaggerated, but it's the one brand you get as far as a public persona. (In fact, you kinda only get one main persona in real life, too, even if that perceived persona is inaccurate and misses a lot.) So Megyn Kelly's attempt at Mom Jeans On/Mom Jeans Off will fail. Not because she's particularly terrible (though she's not terrific, as Trump would say). But just because she's trying to be a feathered fish -- a fish that can't swim, but also can't fly. And also, because she's annoying and she abandoned her core audience for a hostile liberal audience because Fox News personnel wouldn't take her side more in a personal dispute with a major political actor that the network is obligated to cover objectively. Martha has filled in quite nicely for the caustic Megyn. Martha seems to "get it".
I thought at first Martha would be solid but very reserved, tending toward establishment. But she has emerged as no wall flower ... she takes on the smears, seems to stand up for the average Joe. She's also gorgeous, and has added some curls to that too straight hair look. She looked like a fun person in the shot of her at the Kentucky fair, but of course that ring on her finger costs more than my net worth probably, so she's not not quite "the country girl", but still seems down to earth. She's from Buffalo, so more upstate than big city. Probably still a Bills fan. Go Martha go ... Megyn Who? Posted by: Illiniwek at August 30, 2017 07:17 PM (veVl1) 190

Megyn made the fatal error with her FOX persona.
Her Viking Princess Full of the Righteous Fury of the Righteous persona worked pretty well. Cuz who doesn't like a hawt righteous chick, however- she went Full Bitch on Wheels with Trump and though Hollywood/MSM want us, the normal people of America, to love the BOW archetype- we do not. BOWs suck and are unpleasant to be around. By going Full BOW and you never go Full BOW, Megyn appealed mightily to the fymynyst wish castiing bosses of NBC- but not to an audience who finds BOWs tiresome, i.e.. the bulk of Americans. She would be smart to take up a fuzzy fun Mom persona- that's a pony she could ride for years and years. Posted by: naturalfake at August 30, 2017 07:18 PM (9q7Dl) 195

Arrived late to the party on the Pelousy statement, but have to get in my two cents:
Notice that she couldn't do this without resorting to weaselly phrasing. She said the "people _calling_ themselves antifa" leaving it open that they may not have been _true_ antifa. Maybe a bunch of antifa poseurs. She didn't actually condemn them herself, she said they "deserve" to be condemned. She also said "the _perpetrators_ should be arrested and prosecuted", again, not calling antifa by name. * rolls eyes * Posted by: db at August 30, 2017 07:22 PM (1i3zr) 225

Well, not sure what the inside scoop was on the sexual harassment, however, if the only transgression was some filthy comments and some innuendo these silly news readers need to suck up. For the kind of money they get paid someone could send me emails packed with gay porn every morning, which I would open, delete, and then finish my coffee.

I'm starting to really dislike Howard Stern since he has turned into the typical liberal douche, but his interview style is what these pseudo celebrity journalists should strive to do. Though this praise is even starting to go to his head because I've noticed he's even started to follow his script and doesn't let the guest finish their answers so he can ask his next question. At least as of a couple of months ago because I stopped listening to him.

Really nothing wrong with the Angels' group wanting to raise extra money to help veterans with rebuilding/relocating etc expenses either, it just surprised me a bit because they mostly send care packages to the troops and do things like buying I-pads or talk to text software for injured veterans. None of them is doing the red cross thing and spending $$$ at FNM and Zuckerberg to advertise for folks to send $10 with a stupid text and then wonder why their cell phone bill is so high next month. The thing they will take from Meagain flaming out will be the wrong lesson though. They probably saw it as a coop to 'steal' her from Fox. They also probably liked that she was hostile to Trump. They also probably figured that some of the viewers she had at Fox would follow her.
Then she burned her viewers from Fox, who did not like her going after Trump like he owed her money and slept with her daughter. They especially did not like her then shedding the mask and showing herself as a liberal. Being hot only gets you so far. So the execs will look at this and see that 'conservatives' don't drive ratings, but what was she really conservative about to begin with? Morons. Spock tried beating the shit out of "Nancy" to prove to Bones that it's probably not a good idea to look up old girlfriends. After "Nancy" sends Spock flying with a casual slap, it finally occurs to Bones that even if this was "Nancy" she'd be a bitch to deal with when he came home late from the bar. in re the sidebar comment about "anti fascist":
The Washington Examiner reporter is an ahistorical fool. The Communists in the Republican government during the middle phase of the Spanish Civil war were using Antifa slogans to isolate and exclude the Anarchist elements prior to widespread purging and jailing them in 1937. It was a ploy to identify the Anarchists as in league with the Nationalist who were supposedly getting massive support from the Italian Fascists -- in fact were accused of engineering influxes of brigades of Italian soldiers to undermine the Republic, or at least undermine the Communists who were getting funding and arms from the Russians. browsing lightly, it looks like the term went further back, but it was mostly focused against the Italians, not so much the Germans. You know, the Italians, the people who invented fascism? Posted by: Kindltot at August 30, 2017 08:34 PM (Gv+zt) 631

Mugatu and Gorn are HQ faves.
Posted by: J.J. Sefton at August 30, 2017 08:28 PM (mbhDw) Costumes so bad they were good. Although with the Mugato I didn't notice much since I was very focused on Nancy Kovacs' very ample cleavage in that mohair halter top and her fantastic ass in those skintight leather pants. The Gorn looked like he should have stomped on a scale model of Tokyo as a warmup. The sight of Sulu running in a blind panic would have made it perfect. I got a kick out of Kirk chucking a boulder at the Gorn and it had all the stopping effect of a wad of Jello. The Gorn then picks up a boulder the size of a Buick and sails it like a Jay Cutler Hail Mary pass, but fortunately for Kirk it was just as accurate. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 30, 2017 09:17 PM (rZ+mb) Not to pick a fight with you ... by no means ... I just beg to differ. Not on the notion that public schools suck. Most do. I teach and do much, much more homework that I ever intended or wanted. But I did not insist my kids memorize tables. I think it's a waste of time. If one's to move onto Algebra - it's counter-productive, in my humble opinion. One must learn to count. Forward and backward. Then by multiples. By twos. Then threes. Then by intervals at random. Under stress - by me loudly insisting. Then one can multiply by counting forward by groups with any set of numbers. Or divide by counting backward, as long as I set up a fraction without remainder. Education majors are the dumbest people in the university.

But I did not insist my kids memorize tables. I think it's a waste of time.
Absolutely not. ONe must have certain operations burned into his memory in order to become "fluent" at math. Multiplication of single digits and up into the low double digits is a very important foundation that should be available to one without thinking. There are certain "facts" that one needs to just "know" and the way you do that is by memorizing them through rote repitition. If one's to move onto Algebra - it's counter-productive, in my humble opinion. Not at all. I simply do not see how those basic functions can be memorized for Algebra ... because how in the fuck does anyone memorize tables for 3A - .5A = 5 ? One needs to be facile with basic arithmentic. Then things you do in algebra become easier because you aren't confused, or don't have to waste time, trying to figure out the basic arithmetical parts. When I taught calculus courses I used to have people who were not proficient at manipulating fractions. THey had passed all the earlier courses and they could figure problems with fractions out if they sat down and took a half hour but they weren't PROFICIENT and, as a result, became lost very easily - not because of the calculus but because of the more basic operations that they hadn't been drilled at enough to just "know". One must understand how the numbers FLOW. How they work - fluidly. How they interact. IMHO Posted by: ScoggDog at August 30, 2017 09:24 PM (fiGNd) Sorry ... but that is meaningless, really. Numbers don't "flow" and no one on Earth "understands" numbers. You have a hard time even finding someone who is willing to define what a number is for you. I'm telling you this from a mathematician's point of view. Kids need to be drilled with the basics, to start. They need to have certain simple operations at their mind's "fingertips", as it were. They need to be proficient at basic arithmetic. THey need to be given simple methods for working with numbers - long division, addition/subtraction by columns, ... This is the foundation for moving on in math, in any way, at all. They don't need to be taught to count backwards to do subtraction. That sort of stuff is beyond ridiculous and does absolutely nothing for the kids. Kids in elementary school are not learning Number Theory. They are just learning a little bit about simple numbers. Number Theory doesn't come until college, and then only if they choose to study real math. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 30, 2017 09:40 PM (rZ+mb) 876

Using 2^5 * 2^6 = 2^11 to solve 32 * 64 is a technique that can only be used by someone familiar enough with math to recognize that 32 and 64 are both exponents of 2 and have 2^10 memorized by use.
Or, one might recognize that both 32 is some multiple of 2 and rephrase the problem as 32 * 64 = 16 * 128 = ... 2 * 1024 = 2048. Again, one must be well versed. These are two techniques that one could teach kids to ape. Time and the kids would be better served teaching long multiplication after teaching them how to construct their own multiplication table. You can change bases all you want but if the kids can't do regular arithmetic and aren't clear on simple ways to figure out arithmetical problems that they can't do in their heads then they sure as shit aren't going to be picking up artihmetic in base 7 very quickly. They'll be confused by the simple arithmetic that they don't really know and will never really get to understanding the new concept they are being taught. The proof is all around. Math scores of Americans have not gone up while money has poured into the programs and they have been changed to all this "new math" bullshit. Guess what, at the grade school level there hasn't been any "new math" in hundreds of years. All we have are a lot of teachers who couldn't pass the math tests, themselves, having fun trying to confuse the kids with silly ways of calculating that they don't, themselves, thoroughly understand. And if you doubt me on this just go and look at the average GRE scores for intended education grads. You'll see how proficient they are at mathematics. I used to teach a lot of math ed majors. I've seen them, first hand. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 30, 2017 09:53 PM (rZ+mb) 922

Common Core attempts to teach the associative property to break down problems into smaller chunks. Eventually everyone does it that way to solve problems, with enough practice. The problem is teachers nowadays let children solve problems in small groups, don't really drill the method down until it becomes second nature AND also teach alternative methods which invariably confuses the student.
My own thoughts are that students should be taught math confidence, that is, ensuring foundational work is mastered before moving to next steps. Posted by: MAGA at August 30, 2017 09:54 PM (Tyk2V) 927

x32 = (2x64=12 ![]() (30x64=192)=2048 An inelegant approach to the brute force approach which indicates that you are really decomposing the numbers, but the rote multiplication approach just seems far more efficient when all you want is the basic answer! As an aside, I thought some aspects of common core were rather neat but the straightforward mechanical approach is still very useful in day to day life, which is where most of the students will be! Hopefully their math teachers are competent enough to at some point explain how multiplication and addition are related.
Multiplication tables should absolutely be memorized through at least 10-12 or so. Not being able to instantly know the answer to very basic operations involving small numbers will substantially slow down longer calculations. Memorization is a necessary skill that needs to be developed too. There are countless equations that students need to know and most of them will never even continue with math long enough to learn how to derive them. You give basic algebra as an example, but that is honestly one of the perfect cases for having those tables memorized. Stopping to think for every little multiplication, division, or root reduces the time spent on understanding the new concepts being introduced. There's no reason that by the age of 10 a kid shouldn't be able to do simple multiplication faster than hitting a calculator. Forcing kids to do long multiplication using (at least) three different formats is not efficient. And the criss cross method only works with two two digit numbers. Nor is pure memorization a sure-fire path to understanding. One may skip basic wrote memorization of tables - if one is dedicated to counting by multiples before adding, or subtracting by multiples before attempting to divide. And GOULD ... who seems to love memorization ... justified his position by giving me a lesson in EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE !!! He pieced factorals together to solve a question that one simply ain't going to memorize. And there are how many Algebra teaching out there wondering why these fucking teen-age idiots can't get 3A - A = 2A ? Because the kids don't understand that 3*3 - 3 = 6. The basic properties and rules of arithmetic are something else that needs to be drilled. They are taught them and then learn them by doing umpteen actual problems and seeing it all in action. Nothing in math is better than solving problem after problem after problem - by hand. That is something else that is lacking in the way they teach it these days. They forget the basic rules of logic due to pressure? That's pretty much the entire point behind grade school math. If they don't understand that then their time was wasted. Substitution is a good resource for verifying that you have the correct answer or when you don't know how else to proceed, but students should be drilled until they understand basic logic. It applies to far more than simple calculations with numbers. Posted by: Sjg at August 30, 2017 10:27 PM (gDSJf) 959
