The Church Lady Updated: Fat, Blue Haired, Poorly Tattooed, and Full of Moral Outrage (MJ)

Close your eyes and you can picture exactly who I referenced in the headline. Always trying so hard to look like they're not trying hard. The Trigglypuff in the wild, who loves them some preaching, as long as its not coming from a preacher.

Al Gore? He's a saint.

Obama? God on earth.

Hillary? A martyr for the cause.

The Xerson they see in the mirror? Future God, looking to make a name for Xerself.

It's a tough circle to square, but they do it by suspending reality; clinging to incredibly far fetched plots that always cast their enemies as evil and themselves as the hero. Take cartoon merchant Scott Adams'' word for it:

But ask yourself which one of these versions sounds less crazy:

1. A sitting president, who is a branding expert, thought it would be a good idea to go easy on murderous Nazis as a way to improve his popularity.

or...

2. The country elected a racist leader who is winking to the KKK and White Supremacists that they have a free pass to start a race war now.

or...

3. A mentally unstable racist clown with conman skills (mostly just lying) eviscerated the Republican primary field and won the presidency. He keeps doing crazy, impulsive racist stuff. But for some reason, the economy is going well, jobs are looking good, North Korea blinked, ISIS is on the ropes, and the Supreme Court got a qualified judge. It was mostly luck.

or...

4. The guy who didn't offer to be your moral leader didn't offer any moral leadership, just law and order, applied equally. His critics cleverly and predictably framed it as being soft on Nazis.

One of those narratives is less crazy-sounding than the others. That doesn't mean the less-crazy one has to be true. But normal stuff happens far more often than crazy stuff. And critics will frame normal stuff as crazy whenever they get a chance.

The blue haired church ladies are in the grips of mass hysteria and the only cure is some moral scolding and a Twinkie. Or two.

10 Sigh. Adams messes up, bigly, right there.

Law and order leadership *is* moral leadership - that's the only moral question on the table.

It's unserious and absurd to even pretend that anyone, ever, has to condemn invisibly marginal, never-widespread, powerless, freak opinion that they have no connection to. Those posturing to condemn such things make fools of themselves, and insult their intelligent audience.

And there was nothing "clever" about the insane, baseless, bizarre, hateful nonsense from the press, Rubio, et al. Not even close.

Who decided that we need to call Bruce Jenner a "she" now?

It's a Rule, yes. We must refer to people as their chosen gender. But WHO made that Rule? And why do WE allow them to impose that on us?

Why did we give these people the Authority to impose all these rules on us??

30 Appears the racist nutcase murderer of the two FL cops was affiliated with a racist nutcase violent "black nationalist" movement.

I know, it baffles science.

BLM and these lesser-known racist hate and violence outfits now have quite a bit of blood on their hands, and just in the last year.

Where's the "moral leadership" on that - you know, on an actual live issue of life/death, not some abstract meaningless taffy-yank over the "views" of a tiny number of marginal freaks?

Wonder if Sessions has looked at what might be done about BLM, and the others. Might be tricky, legally. But shopworn "back the blue" solidarity stuff is not appropriate for the situation, much more is needed.

What's interesting is 10 years ago these people fought tooth and nail to say it's NOT a choice. It's biological, chemical, people are born a certain way.

Now, the argument is that people should be allowed to choose their identity. So, is it a choice or no? Or does it even matter anymore?

65 Hello horde. I had a list of things to do this weekend. I tackled the weed spraying although 4 sessions with the backpack sprayer did not get them all. Nowhere on the list was 'drive dad's p/u to where he got stuck going to his gun club for sporting clays to pull him out'. Also nowhere on the list was 'change the p/u tire on the way home from that with lots of side fun'.

One of the planned chores was burn the brush pile, and I'd had dad invite the neighbors. We canceled that, I said 'with the way the day is going we'd probably burn the place down if we tried to have a bonfire.' That or someone would have ended up in an emergency room.

So its beer-thirty, I'll try to do a bit more on my list this evening and then peck at it over the week and next weekend.

he never conceded the hypocrisy of being out in the world preaching

15 years, so he could have everything he wanted. I believed, everyone
believed, that he was one of the good guys, committed to fighting for
women's rights, committed to our marriage, and to the women he worked
with. But I now see how he used his relationship with me as a shield,
both during and after our marriage, so no one would question his
relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything
other than feminist.

Just a reminder for the next time some 'feminist' douche explains how he is so much more respectful of women than a conservative, religious man.

Will Andrew Jackson survive?

If they claimed to believe in any policy (ex. ending OCare), they didn't believe it, though. But they needed some platform to oppose what Obama was proposing, in order to get votes. Now that Trump is proposing a platform, they've got to demonize him, even though it might be the same platform they were pretending to propose. And they'll use the same effective techniques the Dems used against them.

I couldn't believe my eyes/ears when a president, from the WH, race-baited and agitated in a mundane criminal case about which little was known (Trayvon).

I couldn't believe my eyes/ears when the US embassy in Cairo apologized to a frothing insane mob for freedom of expression in America - and still can't believe the USG arranged to have a nobody, who did a small video nobody had seen, perp-walked for int'l TV to appease the savage mob in the MidEast. All because of a planned attack on US facilities on the anniversary of 9/11.

179 freaked, last month my range officer buddy and I inquired after a Border Patrol officer who'd come in and joined the club in the summer of '16 - we asked the officers at the checkpoint if they'd seen him lately.

They laughed, and said yeah, somebody had recently "taken him on". The guy in question is about 6-6, 225 - built like a statue, or an NFL tight end (and quiet and gentle as a mouse, actually). Nobody who isn't blind or insane would look at him and say "yeah, I think I'll attack that guy". Of course he's also armed. Anyway, they said our boy was fine, but the perp was ...... hospitalized.

Soothsayer, I couldn't disagree more. Look at what happened when Obama pulled out of Iraq -- we got ISIS. I can think of three reasons off the top of my head why we need to win in Afghanistan:

1. See what happened in Iraq when we unilaterally surrendered.

2. Strategic encirclement of Iran. It is useful to have bases, combat troops, and special operations forces on Iran's borders, especially if we declare the nuclear agreement dead (which we should do).

3. Fight them over there so you don't have to fight them here. We are still going to have to kill a lot of goatf**kers before this is over.

W are actually doing a lot of good over there, although the media will not report it. Think of the Taliban's relationship to the Islamists as just like the post-Civil War KKK's relationship to the Democrat Party. There is going to have to be a political accommodation between the Islamists and Kabul, but the conditions for that can't be established until the Taliban get the message that we are really going to kill them, all of them, and then they will put down arms and go home.

Well, I have no idea how it would be done but when you have to ships of the same design have the same problem maybe it is not just the crew. Lots of people would find having ways to screw with their sensors useful. The chinese certainly have a score to settle with Trump sending in the freedom of navigation ships lately.

Colonel Higgins had been hanged, and we were taking the Carrier Battle group from Singapore to the middle east at flank speed, only slowing from flank to refuel and bottom blow boilers.

But.....we still had to wait till sunrise to weigh anchor and skedaddle out of there.

The state of Ozawa's airwing was known and it wasn't gonna improve anytime soon. Seems like they counted on him being aggressive and when he gave chase, and the Japanese fleet showed up in the north, everyone knew they'd fucked up. WWI for a little over 1 1/2 years.

The Civil War lasted 4 years, and there were plenty of people in the North who wanted to end it with a negotiated settlement.

Given our system of government, wars have to be short, sharp, and decisive. Otherwise we will lose focus, as the government changes from party to party.

Open-ended wars with no clear plan for victory just waste lives and money.

I can't imagine anything more irrelevant than how long other wars fought against conventional nation states or rational actors has to do with how long a war against an international religious based terrorist organization has lasted or will last.

After 9/11, George Bush said clearly and repeatedly that this was a unique enemy that those of us 29 and older would likely be fighting the rest of our lives. Most people acknowledged that was likely given who are enemy is and what they believe.

Wars don't end when one side says they are tired of fighting, they end when one side wins. We can walk away, the odds that Islamic terrorism is going to agree that the war is over will be zero.

Pretty sure that is yet another reason we got Trump. He seems pretty clear on who the enemy is and doesn't mind naming them which is one reason he is hated so much. Our betters would rather we lose with dignity than win with a leader who speaks bluntly.

It wasn't that long ago that Trump went to Saudi Arabia and cemented a partnership that completely realigned the Middle East. Arabs know and respect a strong horse when they see one.

393 Saturn had five (5) engines that burned kerosene (basically) and LOX, 3 tons a second iirc.

JP8 was basically kerosene as well. The Black Hawk took roughly 2400 pounds iirc. 360 gallons. We'd burn that in a few hours.

Posted by: Common Tater at August 20, 2017 09:47 PM (E9vLe)

394 Looking it up:

The F-1 had two turbotumps, one for each, driven by a single shaft powered by a gas generator. It was 55,000HP total. LOX pump output was just under 25,000 GPM and the RP-1 pump 15,500 GPM.

The gas generator was run rich and the exhaust was much cooler, and was dumped into the nozzle about half-way down, at the junction to the nozzle extension.

This formed a skin of relatively cool gas that protected the nozzle from the heat of the main gas.

If you look at Apollo 11 launch camera E-8 footage, you'll see that exhaust skin looks black compared to the brightest of the main plume. It's cool to see as it lifts off the pad.

Well, I'm not a rocket scientist, but I do believe that RP-1 and LOX are the ideal propellants for a first stage.

They're cheap, easily handled, and mass-produced. Even though they make up most of the mass of a rocket at liftoff, they represent a tiny percentage of the total cost of a rocket launch.

Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are the theoretical perfect chemical propellants, but LH2 is much more difficult to handle and more expensive. Those propellants are better suited for upper stages, where they are used in smaller quantities.

True interplanetary spacecraft should use nuclear propulsion. This has been known since the 1950s, for crying out loud.

415 ECLIPSE SAFETY WARNING: BEWARE THE SHADOW MUTANTS!
Tomorrow's total eclipse is not merely an historical event, a scientific oddity or casual entertainment, but a potentially apocalyptic event.
The threat comes from a little understood effect: The Shadow Mutants. Shadow Mutants, a mysterious side effect of solar radiation, are not normally a threat, as they are normally washed out by normal direct sunlight. Even ordinary cloud layers admit sufficient sunlight to block them out.
However, in the event of a total eclipse, this fringe radiation effect is left unchecked, with horrifying physical effects on once-normal human beings. Shadow mutant radiation swiftly penetrates the skin through soft membranes such as the eyes and nasal cavities, and begins making random, unpredictable and extreme changes in human cognition and behavior. These effects can be potentially life-threatening to indidviduals and those around them.
During the eclipse, if you see a faint or unsual shadow from the peripheral illumination around the moon, especially one in contact with your person, you are at immediate risk of Shadow Mutant Infestation.
The only proven protection from Shadow Mutant radiation is to hide in a totally isolated, windowless room. While there, it is important to make as much noise as possible, shouting, singing, praying, as Shadow Mutant radiation, normally not affected by sound waves, is easily disrupted by it in its tenuous pre-infestation state.
Avoid other people as much as possible, even if they appear to be indulging in this preventive behavior, as it is impossible to differentiate it from early stages of Shadow Mutant Infestation while it reacts to the existential horror of taking human form.
It is difficult to underestimate the dangers of Shadow Mutant Infestation. Germany had a total eclipse in 1932 and look what happened then. Be ready!

H2 and Fluorine would have the highest specific impulse. IIRC, Lithium may be in there as well.
Tripropellant.

But the stuff is so dangeous to handle and toxic, and the exhaust itself it so toxic that it is impractical to use.

The highest efficiency (in terms of specific impulse) would be a photon engine. Pure energy out the ass, no rest mass.

Shining a flashlight in space gives you a specific impulse of c. But a thrust vanishingly small.

Getting high thrust is the trick.

Note that specific impulse is really best measured as a velocity. The definition most often used by the rocket people just divided that by 'g'.

It's the difference between the ratio of thrust per weight per second, and thrust per mass per second.

The later has units of velocity, the former of time. The highest specific impulse relativistically possible is 'c'.
