Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 08-19-2017

The Chess Game -- Ludwig Deutsch - detail.jpg
The Chess Game
Ludwig Deutsch

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Pic Note

Thanks to Skip for today's pic, which you can see entire if you click on it. He pointed me to a miniatures site where someone had incorporated it into a diorama, which you can see on this page.

Endgame of the Week (Endgame 183)

It's White to move. Can he force Black out of his defensive crouch and win, or can Black hold?

20170819 - Endgame.jpg
8/8/3k1K2/pP6/P7/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

A Note On Last Week's Endgame

A number of you morons raised question about my solution for the endgame last week, and I didn't have time to look into it as I had other things to attend to. So let's talk about it now. To refresh your memory, here is last week's endgame:

20170812 - Endgame.jpg
8/8/1p6/4pppP/7r/4k3/4P3/R3K3 w Q - 0 1

And the solution was to force an exchange of rooks which would free up White's h-pawn:

1.Ra3+ Ke4
2.Ra4+ Kd5
3.Rxh4 gxh4
4.h6 h3
5.h7 h2
6.h8=Q for the win

HOWEVER...

Anon Y. Mous, rickl, bradc, and Peter Ciarleglio each noticed that 1...Ke4 isn't forced. Black could instead move his king to f4 and then block the second check by advancing a pawn. Like so:

1.Ra3+ Kf4!
2.Ra4+ e4

And with the e4 pawn now gumming up the works, White has no clear path to victory. Indeed, I'd say it is Black who has the winning chances.

So good work, morons, and congrats to you all for discovering the flaw. I like to think it's kind of like science.

Dress Pr0n For The 'Ettes -- and the 'Rons?

From last week:

12 Maybe sundresses next week, eh?

Posted by: Soothsayer -- Fake Commenter at August 12, 2017 05:05 PM

Sun dresses and big hats.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at August 12, 2017 05:11 PM (Tnhbr)

Heh. Didn't think the 'rons would be interested. But hey, who am I to judge? So, by request:

20170819 dress pr0n 82.jpg

Ha! Didn't expect that, did you? Actually, I think she looks adorable. But here are some older ladies:

20170819 dress pr0n 76.jpg

20170819 dress pr0n 79.jpg

Apart from the little girl in the red dress, Mrs. Muse didn't much like this batch of pics. She told me she thought they were "too showy". Maybe she's right. So it will be interesting to see if they appeal more to the 'rons than the 'ettes.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170819 - Problem 1.jpg
1r6/1p3r2/p1pR2p1/2P3p1/4k3/1PK2pPP/1P6/5R2 w - - 0 1

1.Re1+ Kf5
2.Rde6!

This is the move that may have been hard to see. White is setting up the mate next move, and there's naught Black can do about it.

2...f2

As good as any.

3.R1e5#

When I tried to solve this problem, I figured White's 2nd move had to be a "set up" move, and I thought it was 2.Kd4. Then then 2...f2 3.R1e5#. But my chess app found this line:

2...Re8

Throws the rook away, but stops the mate in 3.

3.Rxe8 Re7

Black: Hey look, I've got one more rook to throw away.

4.Rxe7 f2
5.Re5#

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20170819 - Problem 2.jpg
6k1/4Qp2/6p1/r2p4/r1q5/B5P1/5PK1/R7 b - - 0 1

White's bishop is looking mighty vulnerable. How can Black take advantage?

1...Qe4+

Removes the defender. Black must take the Queen

2.Qxe4 dxe4

The bishop is now pinned, and will be taken.

3.Re1 Rxa3
4.Rxe4 and Black wins with a Rook advantage.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170819 - Problem 3.jpg
r7/pp1bpkn1/3p1rpQ/2pPq3/2P1P2R/2N5/PP2B1P1/2K4R w - - 0 1

1. Qxg7+ Kxg7

If 1...Ke8 then 2.Rh8+ Rf8 3.Qxf8#

2. Rh7+ Kg8
3. Rh8+ Kg7 (or 3...Kf7)
4. R1h7#

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170819 - Problem 4.jpg
3r2k1/R4pp1/1p5p/4p3/6b1/1P1n2P1/P4PBP/4N1K1 w - - 0 1

1.Nxd3 Rxd3
2.Ra8+ Kh7
3.Be4+ g6
4.Bxd3

This is the published solution, White wins a rook outright. However, my chess app pointed out that Black is not forced to recapture the knight White takes on move 1:

1... Be2
2.Nb2 Rd2
3.Ra8+ Kh7
4.Be4+ f5
5.Bxf5+ g6
6.Ra7+ Kh8
7.Bxg6 Rxb2
8.Be4 Kg8
9.Bd5+ Kf8
10.Rf7+ Ke8
11.Rf6 Rxa2
12.Rxh6 Rd2
13.Be4 Rd4
14.Re6+ Kd7
15.Rxe5

So in this line, when the dust settles, White is up 3 pawns.

Endgame of the Week

20170819 - Endgame.jpg
8/8/3k1K2/pP6/P7/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

1.Kf5 Kd5
2.Kf4 Kd6

Black mustn't fall for 2.Kf4 Kd4 since 3. b6 wins outright.

3.Ke4 Ke6
4.Kd4 Kd6
5.Kc4 Kc7
6.Kd5!

If 6.Kc5 then 6...Kb7 7.Kd6 Kb6 8.Kd7 Kb7 and White cannot make progress.

6...Kb6
7.Kd6 Kb7
8.Kc5 Ka7

8...Kc7 9.b6+ Kb7 10.Kb5 Ka8 11.Kxa5 wins

9.Kc6 Kb8
10.Kb6 Kc8
11.Ka7

White seizes control of the queening square and wins.

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Mrs. Muse is correct. The point of the sundress and hat combo is its naturalness. The sundress is just a shift she's thrown on to go outside and pick strawberries.

Better yet, you're in Maine and she's leaving the cabin to pick blueberries, which are in season just now. The hat is also practical. She's a strawberry blonde verging on ginger, even with the protection of the big hat you can already see freckles sprouting on the bridge of her nose.

It's a more innocent time. Even if it's present day the simple innocence of the setting is of another era. You notice that the freckles are also forming on her breasts, which sway, only lightly restrained, under the sundress and show themselves completely when she bends to reach the bottom of a bush.

Squatting, she removes her hat and wipes sweat from her eyes and brow with the hem of the sundress. She stands, collecting herself under the bits of clothing as they were designed for, and replaces the hat.

She looks you straight in the eye and doesn't blink.

He broke down today worried sick about his dog. It's a mix breed, about 10 years old named Cruiser. Thanks for any help.

70 I like that Russian chess set, and I'm not a chess person. It's so *Russian*.

Local media here in Boston turning itself into a pretzel trying to describe heroic Antifa and their fans as counterprotesting a "So-called 'free speech' rally", instead of protesting against Free Speech, which is what they were doing. Feeling really awesome about themselves for doing it. It is amusing, enraging and stupid at the same time. Wondering how this is playing outside of the deep blue bubble I live in.

145 22 Did the Arabs steal chess from India?
Posted by: Grump928(c)

Nope.

They stole it from the Persians, who stole it from India.

Actually, "stole" isn't really the right word here, to be honest. More like "learned from."

The history goes like this:

Chess invented in India, sometime around the 5th century AD.

The game spread along trade routs to Persia, which at that time was a Christian nation (converted from Zoroastrianism.)

Then when the Arabs invaded and conquered Persia, they learned of the game from their victims.

Chess for a while became very popular in the Arab-speaking world, during what was the "Early Medieval" era in Europe. For a while, all the best players were Arab -- because they were the only ones who knew the game!

From there, it spread at first to Spain and Italy, and very quickly the Spaniards (people like Ruy Lopez) and the Italians (Lucena, etc.) became the best players; meanwhile chess was banned (as a form of gambling) in the Islamic world, and was mostly forgotten henceforth.

From Spain and Italy it spread to France -- and once again, the new players soon became the best players.

And from the there to Germany, England and Russia, and you know the rest of the story.

Some of the most basic terms in chess comes from its pre-Arab Persian phase -- i.e. the Persian phrase "Shah q'mat" ("The King is dead") became our word "checkmate."

Other early chess terms come from other phases -- i.e. "fianchetto" (developing your bishop to the side instead of toward the center) was first tried when the game came to Italy, hence the Italian term for it.

You can actually trace the whole history of chess through its words and the name of its openings.

153 Heartbreaking story of a parent's pain at losing a child:

It's been a difficult week for parents Temia Hairston and Michael Grace Sr. Their son, Michael Grace Jr., was shot and killed during an attempted robbery early Sunday morning.

Police said Grace Jr. and two other people tried to rob a Pizza Hut in the 3200 block of Freedom Drive. During the incident, an employee fired his own handgun and killed Grace Jr.

Hairston said she learned of her son's death on social media, and only got confirmation from police after contacting them first. The grieving mother said she has been left with dozens of questions about the situation that have thus far gone unanswered.

"If there was to be a death, it was not the place of the employee at Pizza Hut. That is the place of law enforcement," said Hairston

. . .

The parents are angry that their son was shot and killed by an employee. They don't believe the full story has been released to the public.

"Why in the hell did this guy have a gun?" questioned Hairston about the employee who shot her son.

She said her son was shot in the head, and she thinks the shooting may have even been personal, citing past conflicts Grace Jr. had had with other employees at the restaurant.

"This wasn't a body shot. This was a head shot. My son was shot in the left side of his head just behind his ear. A head shot is personal," said Hairston.

Even though their son was in the process of committing a crime, the family thinks his death was undeserved and unjustified.

157 Anonosaurus, cool! I knew Allen's outfit had located Musashi, sunk in the early rounds of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. This is really big.

Somewhere I think I had read recently that the big breakthrough here was discovering the long-unread reports of the LST that had passed Indianapolis - looks like that was the key in redefining the search area.

So Yamato, Musashi, and the Indianapolis have been found. At least one of the four Japanese carriers lost at Midway, Kaga, I think, has been found. How about Bismarck and Hood? That would about wrap up the most famous WWII sinkings. Well, once/if they find the other 3 Japanese carriers near Midway.

I'd argue not. It was more a product of an unsustainable economy and low population densities in the west leading to an undefensable border along the Rhine. Along with about a thousand other factors. One should be careful about using Rome as a parallel to the modern west. Vastly different worlds and circumstances. Now, one could argue demography played a role in the decline of Sparta, however.

171 So Romans had birth control, promoted homosexuality and left unwanted babies on hills to die. Did they commit demographic suicide as well? Is that the reason behind their fall?
Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear

The story is way more complicated than your simplified description.

1. They "had" birth control, but it was usually pretty ineffective. Fish-skin condoms tend to break and wool diaphragms are so great at keeping sperm out.

2. They didn't "promote" homosexuality, but instead tolerated it as a sexual outlet for unmarried young men. The ultimate goal for all men was to find a wife, eventually. But at the same time, the goal of all fathers was to keep their daughters virginal until marriage. So there was a big conflict -- post-pubescent males usually had very little luck getting random chicks into bed. So it was expected, or at least tolerated, that they got their rocks off homosexually, until they could get a wife. But once married, one's young "homosexual" phase was supposed to be abandoned and forgotten. Those who stayed homosexual after marriageable age were actually considered deviants.

3. They"'exposed" babies, sure, but no more than any other culture or civilization back then. The Romans were not noteworthy in this regard.

4. The decline of the Roman Empire is one of the most analyzed aspects of history. We still don't know the definitely reasons.

Good thumbnail history, zombie.

Of course, the spread of chess into Europe was a side effect of Muslim conquests.

An interesting aspect is that the early Indian and Persian sets consisted of elaborately carved figurines. It was a war game, after all, with pieces depicting chariots, cavalry, elephants, and infantry.

Since Islam prohibited likenesses of people and animals, the pieces in Arab chess sets were abstract shapes. Once the game spread to Europe, though, they started making figurines again during medieval times.

Many 18th and 19th century European pieces were turned on lathes. I guess they were easier to make than carved figurines. Then the Staunton design was introduced in the 1840s, and is the standard today. So we're back to abstract shapes, except for the knight.

A bit of an oversimplification and the circumstances are sufficiently from ours that its hard to draw a parallel. 191 Zombie, the book The Collapse of Complex Societies by Joseph Tainter (198 examined this.

Taxes and regulations were lower under the barbarians. The last great Western Roman General was assassinated by a weak Emperor.

There were few defenders of the Empire and the status quo, as everyone but a privileged few disliked the government of the time. Plus education, for the elites, was out of wack with what was needed for the time. Defiantly an oligarchy, with a classic eduction and manner of speech needed to be considered an elite. Not as open to new talent. And after the barbarians took over, the elites were shunted aside within two generations.

The definitive mechanism for a societal collapse is The Law of Diminishing Returns. Go long enough taking more effort to get similar results and that society will collapse.

So we're good, right? Right?

Could be useful. A truly historic change is required in the Senate, and in GOP leadership, for the country to have much chance of progress, but a backlash against the racism that has for so long been tolerated and mainstreamed might in some cases be the boost that dooms some Dem incumbents.

Difficult business. GOP generically may benefit from a backlash, but GOP is not "generically" worth anything any more.

________

There truly is no hope for many, but there's plenty of reason to be optimistic. One major premise of the race baiters is that white people have no idea what it's like to be black in America -- true enough; I sure don't -- so it follows that we must defer to people who know what they're talking about on the matter.

The thing with Kaepernick is that a lot of people who may not know about race do know about football, and they know the real reason Kaepernick is out of work is because he sucks. Then there's Trump calling BS on practically everything we consume from the media, and *light bulb* the picture becomes clear to people. I predict this dynamic will cascade over the next few years.
