Brutal We dads do dad jokes because they are a harmless way to channel a wit that can be devastating. TL,DR: Plowboys shouldn't draw on gunfighters Say My Name Progress This is a very interesting article. The world is spending less and less time in the kitchen. This is akin to those articles you see from time to time bemoaning something along the lines of “Adjusted for inflation, wages are flat since 1960!”. Wages are simply a mechanism to convert one's labor into a fungible commodity, money. What these articles often fail to consider is purchasing power: Goods are much cheaper and higher quality than they used to be. It might take a month's labor in 1960 to earn enough to purchase a crappy black and white TV, today one can buy a high def flat panel TV for a week's wages. We are vastly richer in stuff than we were in the past. This is the same thing, but WRT household chores. My grandmother used to have to bake bread almost every day. Today we just buy a loaf for $1.25. The result is leisure time, a concept alien to anyone but the super rich for most of human history. Eclipse Reminder Tonight's ONT brought to you by Science! Personal Note: I'd like to apologize for the cut and paste nature of the ONT tonight, things are pretty hectic around here. As I mentioned a month or so ago, Gingy's father was diagnosed with liver cancer. While it seemed to be a slow growing type that should respond well to treatment, yesterday he finally got in to see the oncologist (and only that soon because there was a cancellation -Yay! Socialized medicine!) and it seems his liver function is compromised enough that there are no treatment options available, all that's left is palliative care. Gingy is crushed, and frankly I am too. I may not be around much tonight (then again, I might, sleep didn't come real easy last night) as I have to get up at zero dark thirty to take her to the airport to fly home. Any thoughts or prayers that y'all have to spare would be deeply appreciated. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The fish thing reminds me of something from a morning radio show I recall (maybe Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw during my San Diego days) in which the guys had somehow gotten a massive lobster. The female on the show simply wouldn't them cook it and wanted to release it back into the wild. Finally, they acquiesced and she took the lobster and released it back into the water. In a freshwater lake.

One day in San Diego I was called out of sickbay by some Commander and told to report to a SDPD precinct as they were in need of a Corpsman. Hokay, I go. There, the Shore Patrol shows me into see a Sailor and some trollop who had obviously been beating on each other. They were the most pathetic couple I had ever seen. Cuts and bruises, a black eye here and there, nothing too serious. I patch up my sailor and start to pack up my kit. Not so fast, the OOD says - what about her? What about her say I - hookers are not USN issue. OOD says, this one is, it's dumbass's wife. Oh. Same tale as the one linked above. When the elite wonder why the serfs don't worship them anymore, maybe it's because "superior intellects" like Wolf Blitzer speculate that the Barcelona attack by a muzzie was a "copycat" attack.
Then you have his peers circling that wagons to say "Wolf never said it was a copycat attack, he said it might be speculated" Yeh brainiacs, I may not have a degree from the best university, but I know that yellow liquid running down my back is not precipitation. So, there is this some ad on television for some product that replaces the pill. They show women in different circumstances suddenly realizing they forgot to take their pill before going on a date or whatever. Seems they are really very, unnecessarily, upset over their circumstances.
Was wondering if things have changed with modern 20 something kids. Have social conventions changed so that should some lady forget her pill it simply means that there is going to be sex but instead of the "normal routine" she will be in for a long night of blowing and anal rogering? Seems in the past that would have simply meant there was going to be some disappointment that evening but amends would be made soon. Posted by: yankeefifth at August 17, 2017 10:29 PM (0wem/) 163
Hey single guys! Are you desperate for a date? Are you also desperately hungry??
Well have we got news for you! To recognize the growing number of American men who are completely and utterly clueless with women, ConAgra brings you our newest dinner design: *Lonely ManWich* Yes, Lonely ManWich is the easy-to-make sloppy joe dinner for today's hopelessly undateable male. It's not only got all the nutrition a woman could give you if there were one on earth who was interested, but it's also specially formulated to taste best with the extra-inexpensive, extra-fatty ground beef that's priced so low, it's the only kind most older single men can afford! Plus Lonely ManWich comes in all these great flavors: - Socially Awkward Szechwan - Creepy Dude Carolina BBQ - Mangled Pride Mexican - Cheap Bastard Chipotle And Lonely ManWich is extra-easy to make. Just brown that pound of fatty ground round, stir in the sauce, and serve on no-name day-old hamburger buns. Serving suggestions: pair your Lonely ManWich with Fritos, ramen noodles, or even just your own tears! Also goes great with deeply discounted lines of tequila and whiskey. Lonely Manwich: Add some sadness to that sandwich! Posted by: ConAgra Marketing Department at August 17, 2017 10:29 PM (eMKNe) 164

Posted by: Skookumchuk at August 17, 2017 10:31 PM (8NWHh) Glassblowing, like blacksmithing, I suspect suffers from the competition from overseas for lower-end products. In previous generations, a young glassblower or blacksmith might be able to learn some basic skills and find entry-level work in a shop, but now a lot of that is made in China or India, and so learning now requires an increasing amount of time spent learning before you can hope to compete for the fewer high-end jobs that there are. And vice versa if the group you were opposed to was the local Fascists. Posted by: junior at August 17, 2017 11:13 PM (Q6qiA) 375

A funny thing: This apartment has about the best kitchen of any I have been in. Huge cabinet space, tons of counter top space. It also has, not the oldest, but the most basic appliances I have ever seen (The oven does not have a window. ? I did not think they made them that way. And the microwave does not have a turntable. I know, first world problems.)
Regardless, I have been using the kitchen, oven and microwave one hell of a lot more than ever before since starting keto. We look back at WWII with hindsight and the certainty of Victory that plays out on the History channel, but it was in some doubt for a long time. The Axis seemed like they were on a roll for years prior to Dec 7 1941, the smart money was betting on them to win, it seemed. And it wasn't until 1943 that the Allies were thought to win, eventually. Getting our ass kicked all over the place. Brutal stuff. Remember reading somewhere the German Mark or whatever it was called, traded on the currency exchanges until sometime in 1944
Speak___ of currency there used to be a $5000 bill, I think maybe Madison was on that? And Salmon P Chase on another.. Can still purchase $500 and $1000 bills (and the others maybe) but collectors want a premium. Posted by: Common Tater at August 17, 2017 11:27 PM (EmDt7) 419

I tend to believe it is more cultural and environmental. The Romans
believed that courage was a skill that could be learned like any other (as with most of their virtues.) Proud, vital cultures (or families) produce proud, vital men --- Maybe two World Wars just destroyed them morally and they do not feel proud of their cultures any more? Also... let's say being alpha is learned. Many alpha men died. Perhaps there were no men to teach their sons to be alpha, and therefore, they could not teach it to their sons. That's why we have this problem in europe now. It's actually probably a combination of both. People can be taught to be assertive, however, it might be easier for some than for others. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 17, 2017 11:25 PM (rZ+mb) Pro tip: Use a brand new, full bottle of vodka, fresh out of at least 12 hours in the freezer. The weight will help make the rolling easier, and the frozen nature of the glass will keep the dough from sticking and from warming up from being "worked". Replace the bottle into the freezer, as soon as you're done with it for Rolling Pin duty. Retrieve said bottle, after you've taken the last batch of whatever outta the oven, and pour yourself a reward for a job well done! Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 17, 2017 11:36 PM (8O3HH) And it's doubly funny because large bills have been phased out by inflation, anyway. You can barely buy much of anything for $100 these days. Criminals with hundred dollar bills have more logistical problems - seeing how much friggin paper they have - than anything else. Wiki sez that? Since Nixon era, all bills higher than $100 are withdrawn as received by banks starting in 1969, ostensibly for illegal drug deals. They aren't illegal to own, or use, or purchase though it might raise some eyebrows if you tried to spend one.
There was a guy, he'd get a thick stack of crisp, new sequential $2 bills from the bank, and glue the top edge together into an old empty checkbook. I recall a probably National Geographic documentary discussing the 1920's Princeton prof who couldn't believe that the educated, priestly caste that obviously ran Mayan society (just like Princeton grads back home!) could be bloodthirsty murderers so he deluded himself into believing that the Mayan frescoes weren't literal representations but analogies or myths. (Or was it a NOVA about deciphering the Mayan glyphs?) But different guy I'm guessing. Posted by: andycanuck at August 18, 2017 12:10 AM (mJ8mX) 535

Did you know that I like meeting new people, am very outgoing, I enjoy
meetings and really like working closely with diverse people and helping them solve their problems? Sort of took it for granted that you're all of those. But only when necessary. -- Well.. I do enjoy meeting new people, since many are effed up in interesting ways, and occasionally tell me entertaining stories. As for the "enjoy meetings" and "working with others," hell no. I've hated group projects since grade school. Actual thing that happened in Shibumi's life about a month ago: Shibumi's Libtard Male Co-Worker: Let me tell you about this really weird thing that happened at the bar once. Shibumi: You almost had sex with a cousin you didn't know you had. Shibumi's Male Co-Worker: How did you know? /it was possibly a distant relation, and they could have done it without moral implications. But the girl was looking for strange dick and, as a potential distant relation, my co-worker was not strange enough. Posted by: shibumi at August 18, 2017 12:12 AM (aT+Bx) 538

Rusty Nail, have you ever seen a lubber grasshopper. Those suckers are, no kidding, three inches long. My daughter picked one up while we were touring Avery Island and the Tabasco plant and put it on my mother's back. I thought she was going to lose the shirt trying to get the dang thing off of her. It was hilarious and horrifying all at once. My daughter had no idea the kind of fire she was playing with. My mom doesn't like bugs AT ALL.

concrete-abstract and random-sequential are the four quadrants of a test, I think Gregoric test or something like that. It is often layered on top of the Briggs/Stratton test and it talks about how you process the world.
concrete-abstract talks about facts vs concepts and teh random-sequential is about going abcdef... and getting every element nailed down, versus "a" implies other vowels so then you start working on consonants and diacritical marks and looking for cognates. One is much more creative and wide ranging, the other GETS IT RIGHT. Posted by: Kindltot at August 18, 2017 12:32 AM (mkDpn) 582

The program also covers an earlier generation of scholars, such as English archeologist J. Thompson depicted the Maya as an empire of peaceful people ruled by wise astronomer-priests. Andy - Yes they did. After many long years of Puebloan denials that their ancestors were cannibals. Corprolites were found amongst the scattered skeletal remains of people that had been massacred.
Before this anthropologists had presented proof of flensing marks and pot-polishing on human bones. The Puebloans argued that this evidence didn't put human flesh in anyone's mouths. Testing of the corprolites revealed the proof that human flesh had not only entered the mouth but traveled the length of the digestive system and exited it's terminal orifice. Apollo 14, the one where Alan Shepard walked on the Moon, had a docking problem. I can remember that as a little boy. Just a whiff of a memory of listening it on TV at my grandmother's. Anyway, the Apollo docking probe was a complicated affair. The CM had a probe that fit into the LM's vagina. Once on cruise to the moon, the CSM had to separate, then turn around and dock with the LM underneath. Once joined, they pulled away, and the S-IVB was fired off to oblivion. Well, it would catch right with Apollo 14. They would normally close at very slow speed, just a couple inches per second. Well, it didn't catch. So they backed off and rammed it hard, at about 1'/s. Just bounced off. Still wouldn't catch. They had them look as best they could and decided the primary latches were stuck. So they had them penetrate the LM's vagina and hold it with thrusters hoping the main locks would catch. They did, and they mated. But it took them a long time to do it. At the risk of sounding uncharitable, the black math ladies sounds like BS. I'm willing to be corrected, I guess. Improbable it seems, and had never heard about it till a couple years ago.
What surprised me was finding out how thin the walls of the LM were. I assumed the pressure chamber or whatever would be 1/4" titanium or something. It was .020" or something like that. They could hear it "beer can" at night. The bidding process alone was interesting. It shows what business can do, what government can do - when they really want to - and cut out the bureacats. Wow - lots of interest here. For those who desire more basic background data let me recommend 'In Search of the Old Ones' by David Roberts. There's lots more stuff out there but it tends to be highly techical. 'In Search of ... ' is a great introduction.

Ah, yes, "corprolites" was the word they used in that documentary; to go along with the butchery etc. marks on the skeletons. I remember the tribe denying it too. I remember years ago, there used to be this really crappy, slimy truck stop in NJ. A local trucking firm was real proud that they had put an all woman two person team on a truck hauling swinging meat. Evidently they had stopped overnight before going into Hunt's Point at this crappy nasty truck stop. They had a load of about 45,000 lbs of beef quarters up on hooks. When they didn't show up for their delivery appointment they started looking for them. They found them at truck stop, in the trailer, up on hooks, and all the beef was gone. I have other truck stop stories. Chicago, outside Charlotte, outside Washington DC. Some of them were pretty nasty. Posted by: Old Blue at August 18, 2017 01:54 AM (FAo3p) 685

They went on the trip with Rosita, a maid, and a cook. In the former, Rosita is maid and cook. In the latter, they went with three people, Rosita, and a maid, and then a cook. The Oxford comma or lack of it can both create and resolove ambiguity. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 18, 2017 02:03 AM (8O3HH) 690

Let's bring the music on down and get serious for a moment.
Theology means never having to say you're sorry. Oh, wait, serious I said. Um... ♥ Theology means, presume God Is. That's axiomatic, unquestionable, the lynchpin without which all else comes unwound, pointless. Like a=a in math, without which there is no math ("they said there'd be no..."). All the "If God is [thus-and-such] then how come [so and so]?" questions which derive from the presumption are not a means to disprove God, but matters which believers must resolve to understand Creation and the Creator and our relation thereto. If God is, then, why, oh. Theology -it's not for sissies. ♥ Seriousness meter expires. Posted by: mindful webworker - nobody asked me; just volunteering at August 18, 2017 02:10 AM (geVJ9) 698

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that a serial [Oxford] comma is used in lists. Not all conjunctions are used to connect items in a list. Commas are universally used to replace "and" and "or", but not "but". Except, possibly, in some arcane usage that I am not aware of (or, rather, of which I am not aware).

In both your examples the sentences with[/] the Oxford commas are unambiguous. The sentences without the Oxford commas are ambiguous not due to the lack of the Oxford commas per se, but because they should have had colons in place of the first commas, e.g: "To my parents: Jack and Jill." No ambiguity there. Damn, I'm pedantic. Sorry Posted by: Average Guy at August 18, 2017 02:28 AM (LMcFk) 716

I've been battling my own stage four cancer for over two years and lately the cancer has been winning. I was at the point on Wednesday where there did not seem to be any viable treatments left but my oncologist, God Bless him, found a protocol we will be trying starting next Wednesday. There is always hope. I pray everyone has a blessed, peaceful day, filled with all God has to offer, and then some.. Posted by: Ritabootoo at August 18, 2017 06:08 AM (oI7zd) 789

That is interesting. Some use coyote urine (apparently you can actually buy it) to scare off deer. Makes sense.
Posted by: OldDominionMom at August 18, 2017 05:26 AM (GzDYP) I've used coyote urine for deer repellent. It works. For a while. But after every rain you have to re-apply it. After a while the deer seem to just ignore it - because like 'crying wolf' (or coyote) too many times without seeing a coyote they think it's bogus. What really works is having a bear in the area. If you can secure one of them, you're gold. Posted by: Slippery Slope Salesman at August 18, 2017 06:42 AM (EgwCt) 812

"I think the Separatists by definition, want nothing to do with the other two."
You could be right. Don't ask why that question went through my head this morning. But I realized that news media seemed to really insist on the Supremacist label. Yet most of what I have seen seemed to show a Nationalist bend. Almost as if it were a discussion about culture, respect for culture, and all the other clap trap that one hears during the cultural appropriation bullshit. And I know that there is a Black Nationalist movement that doesn't seem to stoke at the SJW's conscience and cause them to screech about racism. So I guess I was wondering if the devil were in the details, so to speak. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at August 18, 2017 06:59 AM (J+eG2) 834
