Progress This is a very interesting article. The world is spending less and less time in the kitchen. This is akin to those articles you see from time to time bemoaning something along the lines of “Adjusted for inflation, wages are flat since 1960!”. Wages are simply a mechanism to convert one's labor into a fungible commodity, money. What these articles often fail to consider is purchasing power: Goods are much cheaper and higher quality than they used to be. It might take a month's labor in 1960 to earn enough to purchase a crappy black and white TV, today one can buy a high def flat panel TV for a week's wages. We are vastly richer in stuff than we were in the past. This is the same thing, but WRT household chores. My grandmother used to have to bake bread almost every day. Today we just buy a loaf for $1.25. The result is leisure time, a concept alien to anyone but the super rich for most of human history.

Personal Note: I'd like to apologize for the cut and paste nature of the ONT tonight, things are pretty hectic around here. As I mentioned a month or so ago, Gingy's father was diagnosed with liver cancer. While it seemed to be a slow growing type that should respond well to treatment, yesterday he finally got in to see the oncologist (and only that soon because there was a cancellation -Yay! Socialized medicine!) and it seems his liver function is compromised enough that there are no treatment options available, all that's left is palliative care. Gingy is crushed, and frankly I am too. I may not be around much tonight (then again, I might, sleep didn't come real easy last night) as I have to get up at zero dark thirty to take her to the airport to fly home. Any thoughts or prayers that y'all have to spare would be deeply appreciated.

IMO, it also has to include how many dishes you have to wash afterwards, and if it takes a whole lot of time to produce. A recipe may be fantastic, but there are a bunch of pots and pans required and/or "make this part, then let it sit for this many hours," I can see people being turned off (I'm looking at you, America's Test Kitchen).
This is not to insult people who like to cook but I can see the modern impatience with making stuff from stratch.

Glassblowing, like blacksmithing, I suspect suffers from the competition from overseas for lower-end products. In previous generations, a young glassblower or blacksmith might be able to learn some basic skills and find entry-level work in a shop, but now a lot of that is made in China or India, and so learning now requires an increasing amount of time spent learning before you can hope to compete for the fewer high-end jobs that there are.

A recipe may be fantastic, but there are a bunch of pots and pans required and/or "make this part, then let it sit for this many hours," I can see people being turned off (I'm looking at you, America's Test Kitchen).
This is not to insult people who like to cook but I can see the modern impatience with making stuff from stratch.

Regardless, I have been using the kitchen, oven and microwave one hell of a lot more than ever before since starting keto. I am not sure how much money I have saved so far, because while I thought I had a decent amount of cooking utensils, I have found that cooking all the time means you find you do not have crap. I had to use an empty bottle of vodka as a rolling pin the other week.

My microwave doesn't have one either. It's 30 years old and has a "stirrer" which is a metal bladed unpowered fan in the top of it which is supposed to disperse the microwaves around in the cavity. It spins around by the blower air from the magnetron.

Doing great, thank you for asking. Leaving for her Senior year on Saturday, although through scheduling they never let them leave in 4 years.
She went into College after Honors/AP classes and testing got her out of 24 hours of Gen Ed. Still can't finish in 4 years.
It ain't the old days, when I finished in 3.5 years.

I use straight glasses for rolling pins. I like them better than "real" rolling pins and they're easier to clean.
I would stick with the vodka bottles and not bother buying an "official" rolling pin.

Pro tip: Use a brand new, full bottle of vodka, fresh out of at least 12 hours in the freezer.
The weight will help make the rolling easier, and the frozen nature of the glass will keep the dough from sticking and from warming up from being "worked".
Replace the bottle into the freezer, as soon as you're done with it for Rolling Pin duty.

Got good news about Mom yesterday. From my oldest sister:
"My mother had a stent placed into a valve on her heart [yesterday]. The thing is it wasn't the one the doctors had planned on , because the valve that needed work a few months ago was totally closed off. But God made a new path for the blood to flow. A new valve grew in place of the old closed one."

America's Test Kitchen drives me bat shit crazy. After watching an episode, all I want to do is take a baseball bat to the TV. Those people can take the simplest recipe in the world and turn it into a four hour endurance trial. Not to mention, they've all got people to wash up the six million pots and utensils they use. I'd like to see one of them make dinner for six in under one hour, then wash up afterwards.
Just as an aside, evidently the cops are scouring my block for a drug dealer who is driving around with a gun pointed out his window. Don't know if I should wake Himself to be ready with our minuscule armory or just enjoy the exceedingly pleasant evening. During high garden season, I make a dish with yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, chopped basil and oregano, parmesan cheese, s & p. It takes an hour to prepare and ten minutes to cook. But I don't do it very often.

The problem is, snacks are impulse food. "Hey a pizza sounds good". If I scratch one out it's gonna be an hour or two. Dough and cookies really need 24 hours or more in the fridge, it makes everything taste better. I don't plan my junk food binges ahead of time.
They sure do charge top dollar for snacks and junk food though. Potatos and field corn used to be the food of peasants, now it's their mist profitable item I bet. Chips.

There's a couple of problems with the "but look at all the leisure time we have" argument.
1. You can't pay back college loans with leisure time. They also don't give you a card when you retire that allows you to spend leisure time instead of actual money.
2. Leisure time inequality is just as real as income inequality. Leisure time + no money

I recall a probably National Geographic documentary discussing the 1920's Princeton prof who couldn't believe that the educated, priestly caste that obviously ran Mayan society (just like Princeton grads back home!) could be bloodthirsty murderers so he deluded himself into believing that the Mayan frescoes weren't literal representations but analogies or myths. Compare that to American English, where we print:

concrete-abstract talks about facts vs concepts and teh random-sequential is about going abcdef... and getting every element nailed down, versus "a" implies other vowels so then you start working on consonants and diacritical marks and looking for cognates.
One is much more creative and wide ranging, the other GETS IT RIGHT.

My favorite was the Big Five Personality Assessment, when, out of 100 for "Agreeableneess," I scored a 5.

HBO's From the Earth to the Moon, in the episode where they are designing the LEM, and the decide to only have one set of windows for the astronauts to look out rather than a set on the ceiling and infront of them, and one of the guys was all concerned how they would need to remember how turning and yaw would change or however it went. Apollo 14, the one where Alan Shepard walked on the Moon, had a docking problem. I can remember that as a little boy. Just a whiff of a memory of listening it on TV at my grandmother's.
Anyway, the Apollo docking probe was a complicated affair. The CM had a probe that fit into the LM's vagina. Once on cruise to the moon, the CSM had to separate, then turn around and dock with the LM underneath. Once joined, they pulled away, and the S-IVB was fired off to oblivion.
Well, it would catch right with Apollo 14. They would normally close at very slow speed, just a couple inches per second.
Well, it didn't catch. So they backed off and rammed it hard, at about 1'/s. Just bounced off. Still wouldn't catch.
They had them look as best they could and decided the primary latches were stuck. So they had them penetrate the LM's vagina and hold it with thrusters hoping the main locks would catch.
They did, and they mated. But it took them a long time to do it.

What surprised me was finding out how thin the walls of the LM were. I assumed the pressure chamber or whatever would be 1/4" titanium or something. It was .020" or something like that. I went to XVIII Airborne Corps SERE school. Piss drinking came up. The instructor dismissed it out of hand. Evidently the body works too hard to process it, negating the negligible amount of real water you can get from drinking it. I did learn another thing, too: earthworms thankfully don't taste like much of anything.
We ran across a snake at one point. We didn't care if it was poisonous or not. Imagine five guys diving for it at the same time. Poor critter never stood a chance.

I can tell you from personal experience. It's called the Hunt's Point Express, Hunt's Point being the old produce and meat processing area of NYC. Nobody wants to spend any more time in NYC than they have to so it's get in, get out. I remember years ago, there used to be this really crappy, slimy truck stop in NJ. A local trucking firm was real proud that they had put an all woman two person team on a truck hauling swinging meat. Evidently they had stopped overnight before going into Hunt's Point at this crappy nasty truck stop. They had a load of about 45,000 lbs of beef quarters up on hooks. When they didn't show up for their delivery appointment they started looking for them. They found them at truck stop, in the trailer, up on hooks, and all the beef was gone. I have other truck stop stories. Chicago, outside Charlotte, outside Washington DC. Some of them were pretty nasty.

In both your examples the sentences with[/] the Oxford commas are unambiguous. The sentences without the Oxford commas are ambiguous not due to the lack of the Oxford commas per se, but because they should have had colons in place of the first commas, e.g: "To my parents: Jack and Jill." No ambiguity there.

Yesterday, front yard, yearling bull moose was stripping the apples off my tree. Little bastard, eating sweet apples. We normally don't grow them here, but this tree is thriving, and I had visions of apple pie and apple sauce and etc. Instead, I got to watch this pig open his pie hole and then, after eating dozens of them, he slobbers like a St. Bernard all over the front porch, and takes an enormous crap. The dogs are barking, I'm sticking my head out the front door yelling at him to get away from my apples, and all he does is raise his hackles and eat some more.
Now I know the real reason we don't usually grow sweet apples in Alaska.

I've been battling my own stage four cancer for over two years and lately the cancer has been winning. I was at the point on Wednesday where there did not seem to be any viable treatments left but my oncologist, God Bless him, found a protocol we will be trying starting next Wednesday.

I've used coyote urine for deer repellent. It works. For a while.
But after every rain you have to re-apply it. After a while the deer seem to just ignore it - because like 'crying wolf' (or coyote) too many times without seeing a coyote they think it's bogus.
What really works is having a bear in the area. If you can secure one of them, you're gold.

Don't ask why that question went through my head this morning.
But I realized that news media seemed to really insist on the Supremacist label.
Yet most of what I have seen seemed to show a Nationalist bend.
Almost as if it were a discussion about culture, respect for culture, and all the other clap trap that one hears during the cultural appropriation bullshit.
And I know that there is a Black Nationalist movement that doesn't seem to stoke at the SJW's conscience and cause them to screech about racism.
So I guess I was wondering if the devil were in the details, so to speak.
