Meet The PetMorons

ALH.jpg

Tom Cat came to our house one day. I believe someone must have set him out in the country near our home.

At first I thought he was a she and so I scheduled an appointment with the vet, but turns out she was a he who had already been neutered.

I don't know much about cats, but I sure do love this one. He's very friendly and this cat will hunt.

Thanks in advance for including him on the pet thread!

ALH

No thanks necessary ALH. We are glad we could post your Tom Cat.

Hi guys. Rich here, long-time lurker, very very occasional commenter, from northern reaches of the Bay Area.

In the foreground is Gordon Setter Luke, 10 years old and of questionable intellect. He eats his own ears for dessert. His primary duty is to serve as chew toy for the Dobie in the background, six-year-old Flirty. Unlike Luke she's highly intelligent.

Thanks for all you do.

Hey Rich, no thanks necessary. It is the Pet Thread who owes you and your gang a big thank you for your submission.

Hi, ive been lurking and occasionally commenting as rumcrook for maybe ten or more years at ace of spades, i think i recall migrating over
For aces news feed sometime after the guy who ran little green footballs went loco batshit crazy and kicked all the traditional cultural conservatives off the board including me.... man that seems like a long time ago now. Any way, i saw the pic of the chihuahua riding the other dog like a pony and thought i would add mine, she was a good dog and unfortunately drowned a couple weeks back just after the 4th of july. although the great pyranese she is riding is still in the back yard. Thier names are goofa (great pyranese mix) and petunia named so by my girls, although i allways called her "little dog" and she always came when i called her. She ended up being my daily quiet companion more so the kids, and it hit me hard. Harder than the kids. As an adult ive learned these attachments to dogs come with an eventual price tag of sadness. The kids are more resilient.

A wonderful photo but a sad story, so sorry for your loss.

I'm mostly a lurker. Here are our two beagles, Houston and Scout. They were waiting for food in this picture, and if I don't get it quick enough they overturn their bowls until I get the hint. We've had Scout since she was a puppy and she's a real sweetheart, unless you have the temerity to walk past our back fence or down our street. We got Houston as a rescue a few years ago. Someone dumped him at a shelter because they thought he was too old. He's a real charmer, too, unless you are a squirrel. As with most rescues, he sticks to us like glue and has brought us so much joy. I love your pet thread!! -JulieC

They surely look mistreated to us JulieC. The next thing you'll tell us that they sleep on the couch. Seriously, nice looking pair of Beagles.

*****

Well that wraps up another Pet Thread. Can we ask a favor of your lurkers and commenters? Believe it or not our photo stash is getting quite low. We could use some photos. It doesn't matter if you have submitted before, send in a new photo of your pet.

So if you have photos or tips or stories, you can send them here to us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Have a great week!!!

15 I finished The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald, about a woman who got married and and her husband moved them to start a chicken farm.

Her husband, Bob, wanted a hunting dog and got one that he claimed was very vicious, but would be safe enough if kept tied up.

The passage about it goes:

"During dinner that night Bob told me how, when I was in the hospital, he and the doctor had been discussing hunting and the doctor had told him about Dog. The doctor didn't finally make up his mind to part with the dog until it had bitten two postmen and three delivery boys. Bob talked about building a dog yard with eight-foot wire, the steady nerves it takes to train dogs, the heinous crime of treating dogs like pampered humans--here, I surreptitiously placed my napkin over the puppy who was lounging in my lap--and other firm manly things to do with discipline and hunting, and then he left for [the neighbor's] to see about borrowing the team for disking.

"Later, remembering I had not feed my goslings and forgetting about Dog, I heedlessly rushed into the feed room and was scooping up chick feed when I felt a nudge at the back of my knees. I turned and there was Dog the vicious, Dog the terrible, offering me his large feathery paw. We solemnly shook hands and I learned from his nameplate that his name was Sport and from him that he never wagged his tail, was dignified and really very shy. Throwing caution to the winds I untied the rope and took him with me to feed the ducks. There I decided to test out the hunting theory to see if it was as ridiculous as the danger theory. I threw Sport a stick to retrieve and he lallopped after it, and tore down to the edge of the orchard and buried it under the plum tree. I confess that I hugged him for this because now there were two of us who seemed to have had no vocational guidance."

17 I was at the county fair last weekend and walking through the goat and sheep barn one of the 4H girls was using the clippers to shave a goat kid for showing.

Next to her was her little brother, clearly bored and squirming around on the bench. I mentioned to the girl that when she got done with the kid she could try her hand on her little brother.

She liked that idea.

21 We lost the older of our rescue dogs last week. Apparently he was older than the rescue folks knew and his health problems caught up with him. But we were able to give him some comfort and love the last few months of his life instead of being put down in a cage at the pound. We miss him and his goofiness but knowing we made his last days better helps.

Our other rescue poodle is doing better every day. He is the ultimate cuddle bug, loves to go for walks (there's a big world of stuff to smell out there) and chase squirrels. There are times when I swear he is channeling one of his predecessors, who was the ultimate puppy. With luck we will have him around for many years.

Shibumi's cat eats kibble made of unique proteins like "duck" and "quail" and limited ingredient wet food that smells like it could be sandwich spread.

28 +1 on Thundershirts.

Our terribeagle mix is so afraid of storms that she attaches herself to me and vibrates like one of those sketchy old motel beds. The thundershirt with a dab of lavender oil on the little scent patch cuts her distress down hugely.

30 Our cat is two years old, not declawed. Over the last month she has taken to clawing me at night when we are sleeping. Usually this just wakes me up with no damage done. Last night I woke up with something wet on my nose. She was sitting on the bed looking at me like, "yeah I did that".

She had put a hole in my nose, and 3 small rips. Took about 5 minutes to stop the bleeding. We often have to put her out of the bedroom at night just due to being rambunctious and waking us up. Wife thinks she wants food but she had plenty in the bowl last night. I said she gets shut out when I come to bed from now on.

Damn cat.

Is your cat indoor only? If so playing with your cat before bedtime to burn off that energy may help.

I actually hired a cat behaviorist for my little cat Reagan and I learned a lot. The cat expert was like the guy on my cat from hell.

She was a liberal and didn't like my cat's name.

She said the worst case she worked was a cat (bengal cat) that was attacking it's owners eyes while they were sleeping. REM sleep when their eyes twitched. The cat could open the doors too.

The cat needed something to scratch and they started a bedtime ritual where the owners played with the cat before bedtime.

It takes work.

52 Dogs and cats are responsible for 25 to 30 percent of the impacts of meat production in the United States, said Orkin. Compared to a plant-based diet, meat production "requires more energy, land and water and has greater environmental consequences in terms of erosion, pesticides and waste," the study found.

And what goes in, must come out. In terms of waste, Okin noted, feeding pets also leads to about 5.1 million tons of feces every year, roughly equivalent to the total trash production of Massachusetts.

Now this immediately brings a question to mind: there are carnivores that are not pets, yet they eat meat and defecate. Should there be an attempt to exterminate all carnivores on the planet? The article is a bit vague, but you can see the subtext is a familiar one:

A lot of liberals (like John Holderin, science czar) buy into the theories of Paul Ehrlich. They think humans are a plague on the planet and use too many resources. They think there should be forced sterilizations in order to reduce the population. They are enamored with third world shitholes because the people there use less resources per capita. They deliberately want to turn us into a third world shithole and prevent third world nations from having a higher quality of life, in order to keep resource usage down.

My littlest cat (maybe 20 weeks old now) is a menace too. Terrifying the older cats, jumping and racing around the house.
She's a little wild (well, a lot wild), but very entertaining.

Poor Cinnamon went to vet today, cried from the second the carrier went outside all the way there and while waiting for her shot. Calmed down a bit until back in the truck . Have her on a special food for urinary track. She seems no worse for the wear.

I had a cat who did something like that, but milder. Just in the morning: she would gently bat the side of my face and stare intently at my eyelashes. When I'd open my eyes, her eyes would be about two inches from mine. Good morning!

Another report said the protest took place but shut down early due to worries. Haven't seen anything about violence.

I got a Feist from a local pound, a yearling.

In June she only weighed 16 pounds, but I've got her to 28 now and she's looking good.

Can we ask a favor of your lurkers and commenters? Believe it or not our photo stash is getting quite low. We could use some photos. It doesn't matter if you have submitted before, send in a new photo of your pet.

I've been waiting to send in the 'Perfect Pet Portrait' for the thread, but knew there was a huge backlog.

Got a new phone a few months back and apple has decided to organize my pics for me!

Screw you, Apple! I can't find that pic.

I may have to resuscitate the old phone to find and post...

116 I was too depressed to comment on this thread earlier, but I've got a couple of beers in me so I'll give an update on my cat Kira.

I still can't get her to eat more than a nibble or two. She's just sleeping in the hall wasting away. For the last couple of days I took her to the vet where they gave her medication to stimulate her appetite, anti-nausea medication, injected her with fluids, and force-fed her. We'll do that again tomorrow morning, then on Monday night they'll do another blood test to see if there has been any improvement.

I'm not at all optimistic. I remember that both of my parents lost interest in eating when they went into the hospital for the last time.

121 Thanks, caligirl, palerider, she was a fine dog. its funny, i never thought i would like small dogs, or children. over the last 30 years ive had many big dogs, mostly rottweilers, then several years ago I started a family and have 3 kids I adore, and now i cant stand to be apart from them. Little dog always came along for the ride when we would go out to home depot or wherever, and when i took a nap there would always be a 5 year old or 3 year old climbing on me and napping too, and of course little dog. So it seems like the end of time period in life. FenelonSpoke, my "handle" used to be a cheap rum soaked cigar i used to smoke back in the nineties, it was a name i started using on the cigar message boards at jr cigars way back in the day.

122 Moki, yes, happy-go-lucky covers the Gordon Setter personality, although the word most often encountered is "goofy." He's eager to please, heart of gold and probably a lot smarter than we give him credit for. I think he appreciates the benefits of being misunderestimated.
