Rembrandt Head of Old Man.jpg

Head of an Old Man in a Cap
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

I have a soft spot in my heart for Rembrandt, because he seems to be painting humanity. I look at his works and know that there is a soul inside his subjects, whereas most other artists simply can't do that.

That was the point of portraiture. If it could not do this, it failed and was "not high art". Portraiture is not about an external likeness. This is why this

I cut out anyone with the title recruiter from my LinkedIn. I have a special place of hate in my heart for that particular intrusion in my life.

103 Magnificent. Everything, the colors, placement in the frame and use of light, focuses the viewers attention on his face with no distractions. Besides the exquisite artistry in showing the features, I can't look at this without thinking of the model's youth and enthusiasms of his younger days. This isn't defeat, simply the toll of years. It would be easy to see him lift his head and show there is still life and fire inside, banked though the embers may be. That the man has a slight resemblance to me (not joking) might influence my impressions.

This reminds me of Rodin's "The Old Woman". The sculpture is more stark, and disturbing, but it evokes the same sense of past youth and ravages of time.

Look at history's 'counter-protestors' like Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot.

The Left is trying to start a Great Leap forward here in the US and erasing all those bad-thoughts and memories.

Those of us who persist in outdated thinking will have to be nudged (at first) by social ostracism, maybe losing our jobs, etc..

Eventually there will be civil punishment for expressing bad-thoughts. See NYC's penalties for not referring to trannies with their preferred pronouns.

When the rules of art were finally being codified during the Academic era (~15th-19th cent.), it wasn't enough to be technically skilled. You had to give life to your art. When subject matter was ranked, still-lifes were on the very bottom rung. They depicted soul-less things and were thought to be only about skill. They were heavily symbolic and didactic, but that's it. At the very top were depictions of heroes and saints. Portraiture was in the middle, above animals and landscapes. It was the lowest of the top ranks because it depicted a living human being. Someone who had the very breath of God in him and was created in His image. The sitter wasn't doing anything special, but he still had a soul, which was enough. The job of the painter then, was to depict that soul and make it alive.

172 The difference between art and mere illustration or design is that art has something greater that shows through it, a vision of the transcendent. Art is not merely what is portrayed, but something more significant peeking through like rays of glory and truth peeking out through the canvas or sculpture or music.

Its why Saint-Saen's Organ Concerto is so breathtaking, and Justin Beiber's latest autotuned product is so pedestrian. There's nothing wrong with pop or folk stuff, there's nothing wrong with illustration. Fun is fun, even if its not particularly good.

Its just not art.

It appeared that the person who was injured the most was the person who jumped on the car and started bashing the rear window. That person was thrown from the back of the car when it went into reverse and was crushed between the car and the pickup truck parked on the street. Was that her?

206 >>King was a lot of things, good and bad, like most flawed mortals. But he definitely had strong socialist influences around him. He spoke against capitalism and for socialism on more than a few occasions.

One of the most ironic things about all this Russia garbage from the left is that it conveniently ignores the massive influence that Russia has had in the minority communities in the US and around the world. It was a tactic they used during the cold war to infiltrate the West and try to damage free market economies.

It is not a coincidence that all of these socialist and communist groups are launched in the minority communities.

Nelson Madela's ANC is an openly communist group that was training by Soviet "advisors" and used to batter the apartheid state. Che Guevara wasn't dispatched to the Congo for a holiday. Same throughout Central and South America.

And antifa is a part of this movement. Dumb, mostly young people with zero understanding of history or what they are really advocating for. Useful idiots is the term that has been used to describe them for generations.

295 >>I remember when I was in the 9th grade we had two weeks in History class dedicated to the Civil War. Today they don't teach anything prior to 1900 until college. That's how you get generations of people who believe everyone owned slaves and all their leaders were evil.

Thing is, you don't even have to go back past 1900 in some cases.

Take the Workers World Party, the group that tore down he statue in Durham the other night. It was started by a guy named Sam Marcy in the late 1950's and was an openly pro-communist party. Still is.

Marcy emigrated with is parents from Russia when he was a kid. His family was Jewish and persecuted in Russia and protected by the communists. So he brought what he learned with him.

The WWP was a sponsor of the very first anti-war protest agains the Vietnam War and that helped swell the ranks of the WWP and splinter organizations that had a similar ideology.

These groups never really go away. They flare up in times of turmoil and then get beaten back into the shadows but they never go away completely.

It amazes me how few people, particularly our so called leaders, don't know this and continue to give these clowns a pass. They are anti-American to their core and the ridiculous assertion that they are just fighting racists is just that, ridiculous. They are not just open border they are no borders and advocates of every fringe group that seeks destruction of the West.

Stop being so berry pedantic.

Posted by: Strawberry Shortcake at August 17, 2017 10:32 AM (/qEW2)

314 CBD, I agree wholeheartedly.

One day at age 20 I went to Denver Art Museum to view Armand Hammer's collection of oil paintings. His collection is vast.

In the Dutch section, my all time favorite. I stood in awe in front of a small portrait. Mesmerized by the circular collar of stacked starched lace. I marveled at how the collar was painted with nothing but hasty random flicks of a brush while it looked so real, so three dimensional that I felt I could reach into it and stick my fingers in between layers. I was captivated how many shades of white went into making the shape appear round and how actual lace was shown by brush flicks.

I looked down at the museum information placard. It said: Rembrant. I was not familiar with this painting and I just now wasted 20 minutes looking for it by various means. It's similar to several shown, but it isn't any that come up in searches. It looked mostly like this, but this is not it. This lace is too careful. And there is no stone arch.

http://tinyurl.com/y9a3jjjw

The placard continued, Man Walking Through a Doorway.

Rembrant catches the man as he is walking away from the viewer from the room we're viewing from into another more mysterious. The light source is the new room. Like a snapshot taken right as he passes under the stone doorway arch, the man is interrupted, by us, and you can see in the man's face his resigning to our interruption.

All that in a painting.

And I was still stuck studying how the collar was executed. I did now want to pull myself away from this fascinating painting, but the whole exhibit was ahead of me.

I think, but I don't know, you had to be very rich to be wearing those circular lace collars. They really did display wealth, as Ancient Egyptian's extremely thin linen. The collars were pressed and starched between two heavy blocks of wood with zig zag design radiating and fitting as teeth to set their zig zag form like smashing a lace doughnut. The collars were made of twice as much material as it takes to sew a tire shape, same as Egyptians elite's dresses were impressed withi very fine even pleats in their exceedingly thin and light linen, by washerwomen who took the whole day, or by slaves. this is shown in their ancient paintings as see through fabric, the transparent diluted water color type pigments that allow the naked body underneath them to be seen, are doubled in even vertical strokes, still transparent, to show them pleated precisely. It would have take a slave or another worker all day to do that for a dress worn for just a few hours.

Then here's Rembrandt capturing that same kind of merchant's wealth by flick, flick, flickity, flickity, flickity, flick flick, darkening his white as he goes around and shows in the face a man who is busy but stops for a moment. For us.

Just extraordinary.

While everyone else paints people as rigid frozen statues with makeup.

Or you could say the political spectrum is no a linear spectrum, rather a circular continuum. Much like a wagon wheel being captured on film. The events in Charlottesville could be envisioned as occurring at that point when the rotation rate of the wheel matches the sampling rate of the film, resulting in the appearance that the wheel stands still, then looks like it begins to spin backwards.

There's this mental masturbation with the Left, where they continue to fight battles long past won in order to feel good about themselves, attributing the labor of ancestors to their own bad selves. Would any of these turds fought for years in the Civil War? Would any of these brave souls have been there in the South, back when you could very well be killed, during the civil rights era?

You're not some brave warrior when you take down a bronze statue based on an era that passed 150 years ago. This is no different that Hollywood coming out with a new McCarthy-themed movie every year or so, so proud of themselves for standing up against a dead Senator, completely ignoring today's battles, today's civil rights/speech rights/religious rights battles, because that would take real courage, real insight...real risks.

The left is the man. They control politics, economics, news, entertainment, music, culture, art, history, literature, pretty much everything. So they write the books and leave out the stuff that is uncomfortable or problematic for their narrative.

422 Not all history will be erased. Just the bad history. This is in line with why it's okay to have a black history month but racist to have a white history month. No one ever accused liberals of being critical thinkers.

So no statues of Lenin will be destroyed because he's approved liberal good history.

But someone has to figure all this out. I think we need a ministry. What should we call it? Ministry of Truth?

Posted by: AlaBAMA at August 17, 2017 10:39 AM (pUDQf)

But history isn't just being erased it's being rewritten. Lenin isn't a mass murderer he's a community organizer helping the downtrodden. Everything was invented in Africa and it was stolen from them by whitey (and them Greek homos). Or that movie that black women were responsible for the space program. No basis in reality just fit the agenda

Like I've said before, when he was just starting out, I worked on (I think) his second and third campaigns. I really don't doubt that he meant what he said in regards to his positions. He and I had a good discussion on religious liberty as it relates to the First Amendment. He got it.

I also had some questions about something once, and he called me back within 5 minutes, while en route to his mother's bedside in the hospital. He also pulled some very appreciated strings for my son when he was over in Baghdad. So I value those things.

He's a smart man, and I think a decent human being. But he is not doing the job he was elected to do - and promised he WOULD do.

I believe he became infected with whatever plaque descends on people who are in Washington too long. Power. Control. The smug feeling of "I know better." He may be smart (and he is) but he does not know better than I do how government should work for the people. I am not stupid, and he thinks he can go about business as usual and get a pass. That's why we got Trump. It's the air of I know better than you do and oh I can just say whatever during campaigns because you are a golden retriever who just wants his treat.

The American people are not the stupid lemmings Our Betters think they are. And Our Betters? Are not better at anything.

What have Our Betters done over the past, say, 40 years, that have actually improved matters? I'm sure there are accomplishments that I'm too bitter to allow myself to remember. But from my view down here, I don't see much, if anything at all.

A golden retriever is smart enough to know that lending money to buy a house to people with marginal credit and while requiring no down payment and backing the notes by the US government would lead to people defaulting. It's cargo cult thinking that giving a person a house will lead to the habits that allow one to buy a house.

Then there are the lies. And now there's the utter refusal to stand up and say how dare you, how DARE YOU claim that someone is a Nazi because they are not on the Left.

Look. If I'm going to stay with someone who demands I support them even though they really hate me, that person better damn well have a hurricane tongue.

561 I know Anne Rice is batcrap crazy, but in the Vampire Chronicles she has a bit where it is supposed that Rembrandt sold his soul to the devil in order to paint the way he did. It is an incredibly beautiful passage and brings up ideas worthy of CS Lewis' Screwtape.

"...But Rembrandt had been changed by his encounter with the Devil. Having seen such undeniable evidence of evil, he found himself obsessed with the question What is good? He searched the faces of his subjects for their inner divinity; and to his amazement he was able to see the spark of it in the most unworthy of men.

His skill was such--and please understand, he had got no skill from the devil; the skill was his to begin with--that not only could he see that goodness, he could paint it; he could allow his knowledge of it, and his faith in it, to suffuse the whole.

With each portrait he understood the grace and goodness of mankind ever more deeply. He understood the capacity for compassion and for goodness that resides in every soul...

At last the faces Rembrandt painted were not flesh-and-blood faces at all. They were spiritual countenances, portraits of what lay within the body...they were visions of what that person was at his or her finest hour, of what that person stood to become...

Finally he lay on his deathbed. The devil pranced about, gleefully, ready to snatch Rembrandt's soul and pinch it between evil little fingers. But the angels and saints cried to God to intervene

"In all the world, who knows more about goodness?"...

And so God broke the pact between Rembrandt and the Devil. He took to himself the soul of Rembrandt, and the Devil, so recently cheated of Faust for the very same reason, went mad with rage."

577 The Interior Department wont be removing monuments to Confederate soldiers at national battlefields that are an important part of our countrys history, according to a spokesman.

The National Park Service is committed to safeguarding these memorials while simultaneously educating visitors holistically and objectively about the actions, motivations and causes of the soldiers and states they commemorate, spokesman Jeremy Barnum told E&E News.

I think at one time they employed 7000 people

They also politicized the Rosa Rarks funeral. The very people who had aallowed her to be mugged and homeless years before cashed in on her funeral/political rally. Fittingly the main person to use her funeral ended up in jail ( after getting reelectrd) so there is that!
