Rothko Seagrams.jpg

Seagram Mural
Mark Rothko

I posted a Rothko about three months ago, and I sort of liked it. it wasn't great, but it was mildly interesting and sort of pleasant.

So I figured it was time to revisit him and find another one of his works that was interesting and, dare I say, innocuous.

And I couldn't. As far as I can tell, three months ago I stumbled upon the only Mark Rothko work I could stomach. But damn it, I decided on a Rothko, and you are getting a Rothko!

24 One thing that I'm not up to speed on - the latest diatribes against Thomas Jefferson, it needs to be pointed out they were the liberals of the day, and I mean that in a good way.

"He owned Slaves!" Yes, and they were probably inherited. How is that his fault? What was he supposed to do?

Keep in mind in those days, inheritance laws were different. Heirs were responsible for debts, not just assets. Were his slaves "paid for"? I don't know. Of course none of this will enter a modern discussion.

36 CBD, do you have a link to this picture, or the date? I googled the title provided and, as is normal for Modern art, got many pictures but none are this. Apparently he did a series called "Seagram's Murals". I'm curious because this is very unlike the Rothko's I know, but I'm no expert either. Without the heading, I would have put this as a Clifford Still.

"He owned Slaves!" Yes, and they were probably inherited. How is that his fault? What was he supposed to do? "

Also, some of the Founders opposed freeing the slaves because they thought it would be cruel to turn people who had never been free out into the world to fend for themselves in a hostile environment. Yeah, that's self-serving, but it's also a valid concern.

They thought slavery would eventually become unprofitable and wither away. Ironically, it was the invention of the cotton gin by a Yankee, Eli Whitney, that gave slavery a whole new lease on life.

106 We saw the Rothkos at the Philips Collection, and yes, the original canvas is breathtaking. They purposefully put them in a small room off the main exhibit hall, so that only a few people could go in at a time, and that makes a difference in viewing them.

For those in the DC area, Phillips has an exhibit on Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party that will begin in October. It should be good.

188 Weather calls for one long cloud to cover US from Oregon to S.C. today.

Posted by: Corona at August 21, 2017 10:34 AM (iHfWH)

189 Is WhatWhatWhat still around? I had an answer for him regarding moving:

I also moved to Colorado from New York. There are two things it has going for it: scenery and weather. I love the drier climate and even when it snows hard it evaporates very quickly. I can't state enough how pleasant it is to live in a climate where the humidity doesnt suck the fucking life out of you.

The people though I don't much care for. There's a distinct sea change in personality and culture coming from New York, although in your case there might be less of one since you live in more rural upstate NY.

The older population here can be very friendly. The younger ones are a bunch of pissfuck twatheads. Avoid any interaction with young people if you can. But even with the older generation, the oftentimes laidback, rambling demeanor really grates on my GET TO THE FUCKING POINT NOW New York based attitude. I just called up a Coloradan the other day and what should have been a 5 minute conversation turned into a 2 hour rambling discussion. Jeebus can these people talk.

I can't emphasize this enough, the cultural divide being surrounded by people whose demeanor and personalities are so alien to your own can be a major dealbreaker. While there are a lot of people out here that support Trump, many thought he was a basketcase when really it's the New York personality they couldn't really understand. I talk the same, gruff way that Trump does and it can really turn people off here. Scott Adams even mentioned this same experience, just talking about the weather. Someone would comment that it might rain today, and a New York response would be: "Rain... shit. I need rain like I need a goddamned fucking bullet to the head." Coloradans would consider this deranged behavior. We New Yorkers call it talking.

I also feel Coloradans are... slow. This is just a stereotypical view though, I think we Yankees have a disposition to assume anyone who talks slow is automatically a fucking idiot, although in my case I have decided a lot a Coloradans really are fucking idiots.

Then there's the rapidly increasing cost of living and the inflow of asshole transplants from other states who are also equally fucking idiots. It;s something you need to consider. The scenery is great yes, but compared to upstate NY, you are likely going to lose money in terms of cost of living, and you will definitely feel alone. It can be much harder to make friends here because of cultural differences.

Overall I would say stay where you are. In my case, I had no roots so it was easy for me to move, and I don't regret it, because it helped me learn more about myself and what I want in life, and I decided family, and being able to connect to the people around you without overcoming cultural barriers is more important than scenery/climate. To add to that, the mountains DO get boring after a while. I miss the variety of the landscape that only the northeast seems to offer, from oceans and lighthouses to colonial towns to the Adirondacks, especially in the fall.

If you're older I think its better to remain where you have a community of friends and family, even if that means giving up a possible promotional career track.

My two cents.

They are also insanely expensive and owned by some of the richest people in the world. To give you an idea, here is the "mother ship" for one of the boats. 299 248 Byzantine history is very interesting. I once read an article that theorized that the development of Islamic ban on images was actually the result of a propaganda war with Byzantium.

I've wondered if iconoclasm came from Byzantine defeats at the hands of the Muslims who rejected all representations of people, holy or not. "God favors them, smash the icons so He'll return His favor to us!"
Posted by: Rob Crawford at August 21, 2017 10:47 AM (6wNeY)

Believe it or not, I'm reading a history of the middle centuries of the Byzantine empire now (By Romilly Jenkins. Odd writing style.). His theory is that the iconoclast campaign started as an expression of the controversy over the nature of Christ (monothelitism -- one person or three?) and moved on to a thesis about whether you could encompass a divine being in an icon. The iconoclasts said no, and acted accordingly. Jenkins holds that the Muslims pitched in as a means of fomenting dissent within the empire.

Actually, yes. The Byzantines has suffered a series of defeats and downturns at the same time as Islam's rise and spread. Many blamed it on the cult of icons that was very popular at the time and finally convinced an emperor of their cause. Iconoclasm was mostly prevalent in Constantinople and didn't really take off in the frontiers, but the world lost some incredible works of art because of it. Although Western Europe benefit as many artists migrated west and helped European culture grow out of the Dark Ages.

This illuminated page from a Bible blasts iconoclasm as sacrilege, and compares an Iconclast to those who killed Christ.

True. So much of Byzantine history can be read, with a modern perspective, and not understood; I am referring to modern readers who view history only through secular eyes.
Religion and in some sense, spiritual matters, permeated the whole culture of Byzantium ( and also their Nemesis, Islam).
To gloss over this fact is to misunderstand the time.

I believe what is transpiring in America right now, with the Civil War going on, has not risen to the level of Holy War. Yet.
God help us if that occurs... ( oddly, there can be Secular " Holy Wars"..)

Was in a similar school board meeting years ago. One of the things we did is to have somebody setup a video camera in the back. It is a public meeting, they can't stop you. We didn't even have a tape in the machine, but the school board didn't know that. It was there solely for the intimidation factor, and it worked. Amazing how people change behavior when they think they are on camera.

ah

somewhere I saw this morning that a lady had made more protective eclipse viewers for kids. Was kind of cute. She only used paper plates, the really cheap ones, and she spliced the viewer threw it so that their eyes couldn't wander to far from the eclipse viewer screen. It was a cheap and easy solution for the little ones, who, you know will try to look at the sun without the filter. Have to watch the kids.

Very sad story about a very small child who choked on a grape in the store. Mother was right there, just picking out cheese and the kid grabbed a grape from the cart she was in, and the sad thing was, no one knew how to save the kid with the heimlich maneuver. The child died.

So, why lie?

The Iconoclasts believed that Icons had becomemore than images. They were idols, and the success of the aniconic Muslims just provided evidence that God was punishing them. The idolatry had to be cleansed. Their arguments won over the emperors for about 80 years.

We just didn't want to risk the traffic. We can go outside for a few minutes in the afternoon to burn our eyes out of our sockets.

520 The point is that a religious question had the power to get people up in arms so much that there was actual violence in the streets. (Also, I agree with the Catholics and the Orthodox that icons act as a mediating device between the believer and God, but that's neither here nor there.)

It used to bother me that religious people could get so worked up over hairsplitting points of doctrine. But the secular antifa is getting worked up over the existence of statues. And they don't even have a world view that allows them to believe in morality anyway.

524 >>>NYT sent out a Tweet basically saying that if we can predict a solar eclipse, then we were right about climate change.<<<

Predicting an eclipse is like predicting night and day.

Being right about climate change is like teleporting to the nearest sentient alien civilization for pizza takeout, hold the anchovies.

531 Making predictions isn't science.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 21, 2017 11:23 AM (39g3+)

Well, it is, in a manner of speaking. It's called hypothesis testing. For instance, one of the consequences of relativity theory was that the Sun's gravity would bend rays of light from a distant star, and that star would appear to be displaced from its known position as it was occulted by the Sun. Now, normally, you cannot observe a star anywhere near the Sun. But some astronomers went and observed such an event during a solar eclipse, and the prediction was confirmed. Had it not been confirmed, it would have falsified Relativity theory.

But Gerbil Worming is deliberately set up to be un-falsifiable; it's religion, not Science.

534 Johannes Keppler, the guy who calculated the orbit of Mars based on Tycho Brahe's observations, wrote a story about visiting the Moon traveling with lunar demons who could only travel between the Moon and the Earth and back again during eclipses, and he hitched a ride with them.

Book was called Somnium

And everyone stole from him after that.
