Copley Boyleston.jpg

Nicholas Boylston
John Singleton Copley

I would love to know what the hell is going on in this guy's head, and what Copley was thinking when he painted this portrait.

You Massholes might know his name....

88 This is a nice example of the grand manner portrait, which was becoming popular at the time, especially in the British world. Portraiture isn't about likeness, it's about personality. Portraying someone in the grand manner enhances their nobility and stature. In Britain, it was their literal nobility, but in the Colonies, it was about his nobility of spirit, humanity--the nobility of the common Man. Copley's painting of Paul Revere is another example of this.

Boylston is portrayed here as a man of style. He has wit and charm, and a great sense of humor. Those books say he is a man of education and intelligence. That is probably Boston harbor in the background. If so, then he is highlighting his origins as being one of the upper class citizens of an important city in the British Empire.

Boylston used to have his shop on King Street which was right on the old harbor before the city got reconfigured including filling in the northern part of the harbor to create the Back Bay.

King Street was also the location of the old State House and the Boston Massacre, one of the sparks that help set off the Revolution. The street was renamed State Street after the war, naming things after kings became a lot less popular then.

This was the major shipping and trade location in the city at the time and is right across the street from Faneuil Hall.

279 Burn on reading:

I survived another morning behind the wire, in Deepest of Blue NYC. That online test I recently took, saying I was best suited in the Military to be a Spy, is so true.

Taking the commuter rail I wound up on the local, which meant stops in The Bronx. Surely these exotic Bronx locals would look at my haggard aging Celtic face and say -- this old fuck looks like he's a cop -- and then look into my heart and see a despicable MAGA Trump voter -- and then all point at me in unison and issue a Body Snatchers shrill scream.

So I tucked my New York Post -- a sure giveaway -- inside a New York Daily News outside wrapper and avoided any and all eye contact.

I furtively made my way out of Grand Central Terminal, my morning gauntlet run. As I exited, I held the door for who turned out to be a black women, and made yet another payment on my debt for hundreds of years of oppression ....

308 Chile and lime are excellent on corn. Charring in the husks (soak them first) is good too.

Haven't followed the whole discussion, but if something a little more powerful is OK, get some canned chipotles (en adobo, a vinegar-y affair) and blend one or two up with some lime juice and melted butter, slather that on before grilling.

And FYI for corn on the cob in general, a good short-cut/cheat is to use the Mexican chile-lime powder Taijin, available in many areas in the produce section, depending on the richness and diversity of your lawless immigration situation (Trader Joe's sells a version under their label as well).

You're welcome. I grew up in the area and back then we used to school field trips all the time to the various sites. I also used to live right around the corner from Boylston Street and Copley Square and worked not to far from State Street.

The actual geography of the city has changed some over time, Boston used to be a peninsula, but through a lot of fill the land area grew pretty substantially.

I urge those who do like historical sites to take the Freedom Trail around Boston if you get the chance. It really is quite fascinating to see the old homes, business and government buildings, graveyards and churches where much of the Revolution was launched.

Here's a pretty good map of the location at the time.

370 Well as I noted yesterday, it's an outrage to have a WWII memorial on the Mall, given the war crimes committed by the Allies. Disgraceful.

How would you feel if you visited DC from Germany and saw a monument to the murderers who fire-bombed your sweet grandmother?

(note: it is evident that a basic logical exercise of reductio ad absurdum doesn't "work" any more - which just illustrates how idiotic and morally absurd the Taliban mob mentality is in the US at the moment - and the "reasoning" against a WWII memorial is no more ridiculous than the crap we're hearing/reading today)
