Police say they'll catch the villains, but I doubt that. The Left has carte blanche to assault and vandalize and even detonate the occasional bomb. Pointing this out gets you labeled as being part of an "alternate reality" even by the alleged rightwing opinion media.

Note the cops stood down and permitted this to happen.

Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said investigators were working to identify and charge those involved in the toppling of a Confederate monument. Leftwing “protestors” toppled the monument on Monday while law enforcement stood down.
“We decided that restraint and public safety would be our priority,” Sheriff Andrews said in a statement. “As the Sheriff, I am not blind to the offensive conduct of some demonstrators nor will I ignore their criminal conduct.”
The crowd of a few dozen “vandalized” ...

that statue was for confederate soldiers. I think the North gave the south a surrender which should be honored. Their dead can be commemorated. Those soldiers came from families that wanted to honor their dead.

Actually, just how vile and anti-American this all is seems utterly lost on so many, esp. some even here.

In the rest of the world, and it's a thing that distinguishes the US in the most positive way (and, I think, uniquely) - losing sides of civil wars face extermination, and historical obliteration. Sort of goes with the overall menu in such places (Russia is a prominent example). Countries with horrid barbaric legacies and tendencies have no monuments to bypassed or defeated prior rulers or contenders.

There are some here who seem to lack almost any historic perspective, or worldly experience. They pooh-pooh this evil, stupid barbarism we're seeing. For those *with* perspective, this topic, while seemingly minor (taking away the related civil order aspects that have actually emerged just recently), is a stunning and sickening measure of our national degradation.

Just for historical perspective, can you tell me about all the places that split off from a country, started a war that nearly ripped the originally country apart and then were allowed to keep their territory and even erect monuments to the leaders of that break away movement?

For historical perspective and all.

Personally, I don't think 2% of the people ever notice these monuments or visit them with any regularity. I don't like to see them being removed, it's dumb and ahistorical, but if the citizenry of that area supports it that is their decision.

This is nothing like what happened in Charlottesville. This is just garden variety vandalism with zero public debate. They are not the same thing at all.

268 I watched a documentary over the weekend about the Spanish-American War. I especially found interesting that President McKinley specifically appointed former Confederate officers to leadership posts (they were already active Military or volunteered for service once war broke).

It was a move to show that past Civil War differences aside, that they were Americans, and that the nation was ready to move on - and that their skill and expertise could serve to show that it was needed and welcomed by their former foe, but now brothers-in-arms again.

The memorials are just that - to remember lives lost. It is up to the individual to interpret that remembrance as a good thing, bad thing or indifferent. But regardless, if we cannot remember where the past, we have no hope to use that experience to improve the future.

I think this crowd might get a different reception in Gettysburg...No real large cities in the area. They would have to come from Baltimore, Washington, etc. Most of the monuments are on National Park property. also. Hanover, Frederick, Maryland, etc shouldn't be a hotbed for the crowd who does this.

The website for months was a never ending "learn about the horrors of Jefferson's slaves, learn who they were, blah blah blah.

Today, the website has returned to one sections dealing with slavery on the plantation.

I notice it also has one page today asking for donations to help "protect " the plantation, which has been designated a World Heritage site.

By the way, I am wondering what kind of security the Trump Winery, located about 50 miles from Charlotte has now put in place. I can see the town vandals in Charlotte plotting.

When I was in northern France for the 60th anniversary of D Day I saw a lot of ugly political graffiti on buildings, railroad cars, concrete walls, etc.

I saw none on the war memorials.

My father was also there wearing his WWII veteran hat. He went into a hotel looking for a room and was told place was full. The hotel manager happened to be walking by, stopped and asked, "So, you are an American WWII veteran?"

Getting a yes, he said, "We have a room for you and your wife." He gave them the manager's suite.

So, some in France love America while some in America hate it. And we cuss France.
