22 Horde:

I really need your prayer warrior help.

This isn't about Joyce (Baruch HaShem), but a co-worker's daughter, Rachel.

This is a 23 year old that I've known since she was an adorable little girl, and is now hooked on heroin and meth.

T came to me today asking for prayers for her daughter. We spent the next hour and a half talking it through, and I am so grateful to be able to help in other ways, too.

But: I told her about The Horde, and how I *know* that your prayers have helped to lift up Joyce, and asked if it would be okay if I asked for your help. She immediately said "yes!"

So: please pray that Rachel find some inner peace, and the strength to beat this terrible addiction.

Thank you.

You get to see all the horrible things happening in the world...and sadly our country...constantly.

Social media keeps you connected...in a fashion...with people who aren't really your friends...while the internet overall distances you from real people.

And for those of us in blue states you have to constantly keep yourself in the closet.

Private property, owned actually by the Daughters of the Confederate Veterans in S Cal. Removed due to threats. Comments in LA Times appear to be from Leftists that want a second civil war. The real problem is that we did nothing to acknowledge the horrors of communism after the Cold War ended.

I mean the whole idea of a violent group calling itself "anti-fascist" should send chills down your spine if you know anything about history. While Stalin didn't invent the term it was his agit-prop that popularized it.

Social media keeps you connected...in a fashion...with people who aren't really your friends...while the internet overall distances you from real people.

Shouldn't and don't are two different things. I'd argue it's an almost primal instinct. And the problem is that it's projected almost 24/7 nowadays, so it's hard to get away from it unless you completely isolate yourself, which sucks because most people aren't introverts. It looks as though America is caught in a pincer movement. Two different age brackets being taken out by opioids simultaneously.

You can force a reset by disconnecting your battery. You have to drive the vehicle like 50 miles before you take it in for the smog test.

Of course, if your light immediately goes back on, that's no solution, but for an intermittent problem, it can work. Probably just a glitchy sensor anyway.

Or an old gas cap with cracking seals. That's one way to throw a code and turn on the Check Engine light, but it won't throw the specific cat converter code.

I've opined before that this is the little electric preheater coil for the cat having lost continuity. Which will throw a cat code.

Which is a ridiculous "failure" indication, because it means <= 5 minutes of slightly increased smog on startup before the cat gets up to optimal operating temperature, and normal results thereafter. But, EPA bureaucrats.

Imodium is an opioid, but it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier much and hit the opioid receptors in the brain.

You get the constipating effects without the euphoria. One way to overcome this is to take massive doses, which is what that idiot was doing.

Over at the Art of Manliness site they have a thing on "manly smells", stuff us guys like*. Like an old wooden garage with a dirt floor. My grampa had one of those, it smelled like old cars too. He grew roses, so whatever that rose dust is in those sprayer things permeated the garage too. He smoked a pipe, that was another great aroma. Hoppes #9 is pretty decent. Railroad ties and creosote... Horses and leather and coffee and campfires.. Oh, and US currency used to have a distinct odor. What say you? Best smells?

*One thing when I was younger and dating there was something I couldn't figure out. T-shirts would go missing. Later on I found out that girls like guys T-shirts. Not super stinky.. but a little bit... WTF is that all about? I never asked what they did with them, but I wanna watch.

One of the few parts of state inspections that is important - headlight aiming - doesn't seem to even be checked anymore. Headlights are blinding. Absolutely blinding.

In the nineteenth century, it was not uncommon for medical students (aka "resurrectionists") in the UK as well as the United States to burgle graves in order to obtain cadavers for dissection. There was a two-day riot in New Haven in 1824 when the townspeople discovered that the students of what was then called Yale Medical College had disinterred a 17-year-old girl in order to dissect her corpse. The state militia had to be called in to disperse the angry mob and prevent it from burning down the medical school.

A full account of the 1824 riot (as well as the historical background of body snatching by med students) can be read here: http://tinyurl.com/y78yvm82

I've been retired for a few years now and still hold a valid State inspector's license.

Had it since 1969. You would be astonished at some of the things I found bad on vehicles.

Safety items--like steel belts showing on tires, inop lighting, frayed brake hoses, leaky wheel cylinders and calipers, BAD loose front end parts, rusted frames just to mention a few items.

I would prefer not to be on the road with cars like that.

276 I'm a Frequent Flyer on the Cruise Control contingent.

To me, it's a great safety feature, keeping my eyes up off of the panel and out on the road and in the mirrors. Instead of constantly having to check speed on the gauge.

Plus, it's a tremendous anti-fatigue tool. Pays dividends even on cross-town trips. As long as traffic isn't so heavy as to have you always tapping brakes and hitting "resume" to speed.

And finally, it's a great ticket-avoiding tool. Keeps the leadfoot from dialing up to "11" when those certain tunes get cranked up, also to "11".

Really loved the cruise on my Gold Wing. That thing would hold speed based on engine RPM, not just speedometer input. Accurate to 1/2 MPH at the worst, and usually better. It could detect the slowing engine revs resulting from a hill or incline, long before those revs translated into a lower MPH on the clock.

And I do have a device invention which would benefit every driver on the highway, and it involves Cruise Control & related systems.

AoP could help me with the electronic circuit, I'm sure. What I need, is a good Patents attorney.

291 My headlight story:

Around 15 years ago, I was visiting with family in West Virginia. My Mom was driving her car on a two-lane road and heading back to the 'family' motel, with another car following us back to the motel. I noticed my Mom, who was a very good driver, was veering in and out of the other lane. She said something like 'I can't drive, the headlights behind me are blinding', so I had her pull over so we could switch and I'd drive back to the motel. Once we got going again, I noticed the lights of the small 4-wheel drive behind me was blinding the mirror and somehow was now causing me to veer to the left into oncoming traffic. Weirdest sensation I've felt while driving, and I knew before I got behind the wheel the headlights behind were a problem. I was exhausted by the time we parked in the motel parking lot.

And now you guys are saying headlights are worse?

Yes, Loperamide is an opioid that only works on the receptors in the gut. All opioids are highly constipating because of this effect.

But, with Imodium, it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier very well, and there is another barrier that keeps it from hitting the euphoria receptors in the brain.

But in massive doses, enough gets through to do it. However, they are other bad side effects at these massively high doses, which killed the idiot in the story.

I see now there are calls to make Imodium like Sudafed. Put it behind the counter and make you sign for it.

All because of a few idiots. Just ruin it for everybody because of idiots.

Oh yeah, the "electricity guy" came by. So yesterday our maintenance guy came by. He is tha archetypal maintenance guy. If you were reviewing a police lineup for a maintenance guy you would pick him. Our electricity guy seems to have had lots of experience with electricity, however, it seems less like it was with wires and circuits and more likely on the wrong end of a lightning strike.

So they came up and I explained what happened before the first maintenance guy came up, what the maintenance guy did replacing breakers then the light and what happened subsequently. The lectricity guy immediately knew that the problem was not the first lamp that was replaced but the lamp that was not replaced. He splained how "those two lamps are hardwired together" and that the maintenance guy must have pulled on the wires in the first lamp when he was putting in the new lamp and caused a short or an arc in the second lamp." He went on to splain that the breaker was back on and I could use the lights and fan in the master bath and the fan in the hall bath, but do not touch the lights in the hall bath or you are going to get the "pop" and everything is going to go out one more time. He then told our other maintenance guy to get up here and replace that second lamp right away in the morning.

Would only have felt less sure of his explanation if he had liberally inserted "shazam" into his explanation.

So, when they left I went to the box and switched it off for good.

308 Marguerite Gardiner knows a thing or two. I've always been happy not bothering with credit, just living simply and paying in cash for everything I need.

But I had to move recently for the first time in, like, twelve years, and man, the rental market really, really sucks around here now! I decided to look into buying a little condo instead of renting an apartment, because I don't want to have to choose every year between paying $200 more per month to stay where I am and moving to a new place for "only" $150 more per month.

An FHA-backed loan turned out not to be an option for two reasons. You need some credit, even if it's bad, for FHA assistance, and also, very few condos around here are actually FHA-approved. FHA approval on a condo is something an HOA has to jump through some hoops every year to maintain, and it's just not worth it to most HOAs. I understand completely; I mean, what's the payoff for maintaining that FHA eligibility every year? You get to have more people with bad credit move into your neighborhood, that's what. That's not exactly, you know, compelling.

Once I realized I would not be getting a standard, unassisted home loan on my zero credit, I instead asked my bank for a small secured credit card just to build some sort of a credit rating so I could try again in the relatively near future.

Now I'm just constantly getting offers for more credit cards. No, thank you; I'd rather not rack up $10k in credit card debt just to buy a bunch of little things I can live without. I want to play this credit game to the minimum extent necessary to buy myself a perhaps crappy but at least permanent little home. Also, screw you, credit card hippies; you wouldn't have given me the time of day six months ago.

I think I'll be content with my life if I can just buy a little condo and meet a nice woman who's happy to share it with me. That's not asking for a whole lot, is it?

334 Even older cars have a catch point where you push mirror down to dim lights at the rear while still seeing them.

Posted by: Meremortal at August 16, 2017 11:11 PM (3myMJ)

I tried that 'night' setting on the rear view mirror. Even that didn't help. It was something about the height of the lights from the road as well as the angle at which they shone. Like I said, it was the weirdest sensation, knowing you're veering to left while trying to not veer to the left. Only time I experienced that sensation while driving. Walking drunk? Sure, lots of times. But never while driving completely sober.

It's sounds plausible what he said. You've got a short or near to it in some fixture on that circuit.

How did you know?

Posted by: yankeefifth at August 16, 2017 11:22 PM (0wem/)

343 There are a lot of veins and nerves in your genitals so it is extremely dangerous to castrate yourself. You should talk to a therapist about how you feel. Cutting off you testicles is not going to change the person that you are, just part of your sexual organs. A lot of you distress will probably be left unresolved. Try to find a group of people that are similar to you to talk about how your feeling about your sexuality, and talk to a psychiatrist, they can put you on hormones that can chemically castrate you without leaving permanent effects.

347 I discovered once that long haul truckers in those desert areas where you can see 30 miles in one direction and 40 in the other are very helpful at night at letting you know about a misaimed headlight. They'll flash their brights a time or two from the next county over. Then, about twenty minutes later once you're about to pass each other by they hit you with the 5,000,000 CandlePower XS-Blinder combination Spotlight/LandingLight. I could almost see the bones in my hand when I covered my eyes. LOL

354 So I was wondering...

If, according to the left, we shouldn't honor the Confederates because they were fighting for an evil cause, and because they were losers (and "losers don't get trophies"). Then shouldn't we, according to the left, get rid of the Vietnam Memorial? After all, it's an article of faith on the left that a) Vietnam was US Imperialism propping up an evil government, and b) that we lost the Vietnam War.

What am I saying? Of course the left will eventually go after the Vietnam War memorial. They're just biding their time until a few more vets from that era are dead.

357 Long straight roads - there's a few in West Texas like that, especially once you get up on the Llano Estocado. I was headed to Albuquerque once, had a new Dodge Charger, and came over a little ridge and I could see at least 8 or 9 miles of perfectly straight road in front of me, no traffic at all. So I took it up to 115 and just cruised there, those white center dashes blurring into a solid line.

I surprised myself - the engine had more in it than that, but I actually started to get a bit nervous, I didn't think I would. But I couldn't talk my foot into going down any more, so I let that stand and just concentrated on enjoying it. Funny part was that there were 3 women in the car with me, and they were all talking to each other so much, and that car was so beautifully smooth, that none of them even noticed what I was doing.

385 I've hiked Canyonlands a fair bit. It's in three parts, tri-sected by the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers. I like the backcountry remote areas for 4WD. No bridges in that area. So one can be in a certain spot and see another spot across the river barely a mile away, and it might take almost 100 miles of driving to get there.

There are some spooky places out there. Tons of movies filmed out there too of course.

I have a theory about that. His job was to provide the gasoline by organizing a rally for the looniest "right wingers" possible knowing that Antifa would supply the match.

The Left has been trying to antagonize the Right into a violent reaction, but we are too normal and decent and prudent to be provoked that way. So they went for the fringiest people they could pretend were representative of the Right, people that just might be "off" enough to give them the response they were looking for so they could "prove" that we are dangerous and need to be curtailed.

What happens if you're in a bad part of town and it's nothing but a few pieces of cardboard the local denizen put in the road to stop cars that had automatic braking or autonomous driving?

Self-driving cars are going to bring carjacking back into big fashion. Anyone remember how it was for those few summers when carjacking was all the rage? Self-driving cars are going to make carjacking the easiest business in the world, once the geniuses there figure it all out.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 16, 2017 11:41 PM (rZ+mb)

408 Yeah, Original Jake, but I figured, it's gonna take several months anyway just to get that pre-approval so I can start looking at places and making offers, so I might as well just spend that time building a credit rating instead. Then I have more options than just going with that one lender.

413 So I just looked at the newest post at Slate Star Codex, because he's one of the few liberals I can read without immediately wishing for a baseball bat, and wow.

Just wow.

I have a hard time even putting into words the exact level of crazy some of the odder splinter groups of the left are reaching.

He first talks about a group dedicated to the welfare of wild animals. I don't mean environmentalists. I mean they want to extend welfare to wild animals.

As he notes, these are not the weirdest group he ran into at the meetup he attended. In fact, the guys who want to give handouts to random squirrels look positively sane compared to the people who want to blow up the universe (Dave Barry Caption: I Am Not Making This Up). I mean, little old ladies feed squirrels all the time, extending that to actual policy feels like run of the mill idiocy compared to the other stuff running wild in San Fransisco.

(And *of course* this happened in San Fransisco)

...

I suppose one way to look at it is that SMOD now has a PAC?

I did it, it was not terribly hard. I was disappointed that my bank would only use a FICA score and I had to use another lender.
One of the ratings company knew me as a zero, and the other didn't know I existed.

Do try the Dave Ramsey preferred providers though. They can also get you in touch with a realtor who can help, too. They tend to have a good idea of which lenders do the loans the old fashioned way, looking at your actual ability to pay.

419 I do not need help backing up. I do not need help parallel parking. And I absolutely do not want my car deciding when to brake.

Fuck that.

Posted by: Pug Mahon, Gentleman Drunkard at August 16, 2017 11:34 PM (v3I5m)

There was a parallel-parking aid patented in the 1950's. Four little hard-rubber wheels, mounted on hydraulic struts, were lowered when a button was pushed. The rear set of wheels had a beveled surface on one face, and made such they would wedge in under the rear drive wheels, and lift them off the ground, while allowing the rear wheel to drive them. And the front "parking wheels" were linked by an axle to the rears, so they all turned at the same rate.

Pull up next to the space you wanted to park in, lower the parking wheels, and the car would shuttle sideways into the spot, with no need to steer at all.

I expect the Achilles heel of such a system would be irregularities in the pavement.

421 I don't mind all the gee-whiz technology. It's just they can't be selected, because we're still waiting for ON/OFF switches to be invented, I guess. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, etc all have their uses. But let me decide when, in certain situations, to turn them off.

AIR BAGS. Years ago, there was a rash of people/kids/babies killed in parking lots when the bags went off. Some cars had a switch, sort of like an ignition key, to turn the passenger side air bag off when needed. No more. They can't be disabled.

Turns out, the latest Takata jugular slicers, one of my trucks is affected, has the recall for the passenger side only. No on off switch. No letter from the manufacturer. So I call the dealer, hey can I switch this thing off? "Oh no, that would be unsafe". ?!

There's a fricking federal recall, because if it deploys, it might kill someone, but let's leave the goddamn thing pointed at yer face, just in case.

There's been all kinds of "sex smells" experiments. One was having gals smell dude's shirts as mentioned above. They found that women seem to reject certain dude's smells and it has to do with some complicated immune system crap, histocompatiblity complexes or something.

It turns out that there can be incompatibilities in these -- and that's what the smell seemed to correlate with.

Also, you will find a woman more attractive during peak fertility of the menstrual cycle. The least during the nadir. The pill just evens that oscillation out.

heh. yes, they're hiring. it's really harder than it looks, but the hourly pay is high, so I was willing to try. I would not want to do it in Oakland. my gott en himmel.

rural carriers start part time, once a week or every two weeks. then we get more hours as we learn more routes and can step in if someone can do his route.

worst part is the thing about having to work part-time somewhere else to make ends meet, but having to tell them you have to put the PO first.

best part, you're eligible for good health insurance as a part-timer, for 30 some a pay period.

To say otherwise would be like saying there were better baseball and basketball players than Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan. An opinion I guess but one totally divorced from reality.

Got them! That is a 1951 Champion Starlight Coupe. Very solid-looking car, and it appears to have had a lot of restoration work done already. Seems like a fairly high trim level, too. Looks like it a standard with overdrive, and being a Champion, it will have a 170 cu. in. flathead six.

The dash instruments tell me it's a Champion; the V8 car, the Commander, would have had 3 round pods for instruments. And if it had been a 1950, it would have had 4-lug wheels if it were a Champion, and 5-lug on a larger circle if it were a Commander with the 245 six. And the front fenders would have been longer.

That is a very desirable car.

Being a late teen/early twenty something in the 60s, I've seen them done before, and been pulled into their black-hole gravitation too. There's some very nasty business being done. Yes, some high level double-reverse backwards mind-fuckery been goin' on a long, longntime. Bit if you tried to explain it to someone who wasn't familiar with all of it - they thought you were a nut. They will destroy people who expose the scam. And that was in the old days. Lots of people have the attention span of a goldfish these days. Also, people often (somehow) want to blame the messenger. 494 I don't really understand anti-credit card people.

I guess there are people that if they have their credit card with them they will buy unnecessary stuff.

But having good credit helps in so many ways in life. Some employers even check your credit history.

So why not get a credit card and just put on of your monthly subscriptions, such as cell phone, Netflix, etc. on it then stash the card away in a drawer?

You're already spending that money anyway, now you're just charging it to the card. You're not putting anything else on it so you'll pay it off every month.

You'll create a credit history, show that you pay on time, etc.

And if you're like me, credit card rewards are kind of like a mini-hobby. I get hundreds of dollars in rewards per year. I've never been in credit card debt my entire life.

So when I hit a button meaning to see if the payment had been automatically made I discovered that I was actually paying it manually so I ended up loaning MASTER VISA EXPRESS the $75 (or whatever) because I actually paid twice with my first paper billing from the company reporting that I had a $75 credit!!

So why not get a credit card and just put on of your monthly

--

I'll take a swing. For the record, I have a high credit, and several cards. I don't have a problem with excessive spending.

I realize this is crazy, however, I value my privacy. I don't want the credit cards knowing what I eat and what medications I take. I don't want them to know how much gas I buy, and where I purchase it. I don't want them to know how many times a month I go out to eat, where that is and what I eat.

As for rewards, I know someone who almost bankrupt herself trying to get rewards for air miles. She wanted the miles, so every single thing she purchased was on her card. That went on for quite a while, until she realized how much her free miles were actually costing her in interest payments.

Finally... do the credit card companies share your purchase information? Who the hell knows? But if I use my credit card to pay my health insurance bill, that's leaving the door open, isn't it? Can you even do that? I have no idea.

It's not I don't use my credit cards. I do occasionally, mostly for travel or online things.

I simply expect that every purchase you make is in a database; my purchases are not. Big Credit does not know what I do, where I shop, what I buy or anything else about me.

Also... I pay my bills off when they come in, so they are not making any money off me either.

Yes, it is really out of the box and insane. I realize that.

525 I just use credit cards for things I would buy anyway, then cash out the rewards when I can. It's basically free money as long as you pay on time and pay in full.

Rewards cards are the worst to carry a balance with, they usually have the highest interest rates. If you need to carry a balance and you already have good credit, you can probably get a 0% interest for X amount of months card.

I tend to use my cards for cash back, but there's a few sites on the internet that discuss maximizing travel cards for miles. Some people really know how to do it. It's really interesting. But carrying a balance defeats the whole purpose.

Posted by: Buster at August 17, 2017 12:18 AM (i+yqt)

I remember that article. It was claimed that one such turbine could power your entire house. That set off the BS detector. Vertical-axis wind-turbines have issues. If they are downwind turbines, like the Savonius rotor, they will self-starting, but not very efficient. If they use airfoils, they will be more efficient, but are not self-starting. The vertical shaft bear all the wind thrust, so it has to be stiff and strong. You probably wouldn't want it on your roof.

Having said that, if I were going to try to go off-grid here in windy Alberta, I would build a whole fleet of small, dumb S-rotors out of cut-up oil barrels, stacked 3 high, each one turning a low-RPM alternator made from the motor out of a discarded "energy-saving" front-load washer.

You'll want aircraft type Exhaust Gas Temperature and Cylinder Head Temperature gauges to accompany such tweaks.

You can go to Max Lean, until the temps spike. Then, you have to re-install the next size richer jets and drill out your power valve channels, to suit.

Running too lean, will lead to burn exhaust valves, seats and ruined heads.

Can make your airplane fall out of the sky, too.

this is something i've thought about. when he was a columnist, and newspapers meant something, being funny was a profession. there were professional comedians and writers (often not very funny) and th audience including everyone else. now, anyone can be a comedian and there are a lot of funny and smart people out there. this blog and its sharp commenters is an example. a new (according to steve martin) short form of humor has developed.

555 Evening all.

Well I made it, but it sure wasn't much fun after a while. Took 18 hours, 45 minutes total. Had a few issues:

1) my first coffee sprung a leak and I had to pull over, clean it up and get another before I was even out of the Dallas suburbs;

2) I have another leaky tire that needed attention on occasion;

3) pulled over to rest my eyes for half an hour. Got back on the freeway, and within a minute took a pebble to the windshield and cracked it. A 1/4 inch to the left and it would have missed. Dammit.

4) Them dang truckers. Not all, but some.

5) My ass hurts. I'm too old for this.

6) Sorry about the rage commentary earlier. Most of the radio stations I listened to had ABC News at the top of the hour, and NOT A FUCKING THING about Antifa. Just white nationalist this and Trump unacceptable comments that. I really, truly hate Lefty cocksuckers.

Probably call it a night soon.

559 Buckaroo Banzai was made at that time in the 80's where there were a lot of light hearted, or goofy Sci-fi movies being made. Night of the comet, the last star fighter, my science project, etc etc. There were a lot of those "fun" type sci-fi movies. Buckaroo was no less goofy.

New Shimmer! It's a dessert topping AND a floor wax!

Residential wind ain't ever gonna be a thing. Too low. Too slow. Too intermittent. Unless you live on top of Mt. Washington in New Hamster.

"...if I were going to try to go off-grid here in
windy Alberta, I would build a whole fleet of small, dumb S-rotors out
of cut-up oil barrels"

An underappreciated approach to things.

For years and years, there was a circular house on a hilltop in Marin County, next to US 101, which had its own rooftop wind turbine (about the size of a merry-go-round) made of half-barrels. I assume this went back to the 1960s/70s.

I vaguely recall that it had been taken down.

565 Jim, it's just an old truck. I don't want to get too spooled up about it. 18-20 mpg is about the limit for a vehicle of its size and weight, gearing, and aerodynamics of a brick. Too lean is definitely Not Good, but the damage is done when under acceleration, when lightly loaded (the engine, not the driver!) as under level steady cruise very lean mixtures are tolerable. EFI engines of course take this strategy even farther.

The movie was a compilation of all the good parts of other elements in other movies that were overall so-so.

As such, it transcended the norm and became a beacon for the awesomeness in other things which, in and of themselves were overall not so great, still had elements that drew us to them.

It is a movie that could only exist because of what came before it, and could never be made in any other time.

Also, it had the best ending credits scene ever:

586 Back for a bit. Yesterday, I spent several hours cleaning up an aluminum wheel for a Chevy pickup. Thought I'd put the set on my '88 3/4 ton. Today I spent an hour mounting a tire on it. Put it in the front of the truck, and it would not turn. Doh! It was a wheel for a later year 4X4, and has a strong negative offset, and the inside of the rim was rubbing the upper control arm on the '88 2-wheel drive pickup, which uses rims with a more neutral offset like prior year trucks.

So now I am cleaning up the steel rims the truck came with, and mounting some '54 Studebaker "dog-dish" hub caps, because I can. Got two done on the driver's side, and they do look sharp. Going to mount fender flares, too, because I have a set.

587 oh yeah...

the location for the BB closing credits is the front face and spillway of the Sepulveda Flood Control dam, located at the NW corner of the 101/405 freeways here in The Valley, like totally.

you can see it clearly from all sides except the 405 south, and you usually have plenty of time to look at it, since traffic comes to a near standstill in that area, except wayyyyy late at night.

neither the 4 or 5 Hour nor the 1-oh-Worst freeways are known for their high speeds or ease of transit.

That's how you defeat the Leftists. They depend upon being taken as a serious, erudite, educated elite that truly knows better, etc, etc. They want to be respected and lavished with honors and made to feel important.

They can't stand being made fun of, because that brings them back down to the human level, and reminds people that they're imperfect, and more than a little absurd. That maybe they're not as perfect, infallible, or wise as they pretend to be.

We're all at least a little absurd, whether we admit it or not.

Anyone that can't admit it doesn't just have issues, they've got subscriptions.

US government report reveals his ruthless regime is persecuting thousands who dare to practise 'other religions'

Reality trumps fiction. I don't think George Orwell could envision a totalitarian state as insanely, horrifically oppressive as real-world North Korea. North Koreans would view Airstrip One as a vacation spot. They would rent Room 101 as a luxury suite.

I don't mean to make light of the awfulness of it but that's how I cope with the reality of a whole nation of people being twisted and warped and tortured every single day for decades. At some point--even without outside intervention--that pathetic travesty of a country will go nova from the sheer misery of its collective existence.

The screw holding the rear sight came out one day at the range. I didn't realize until it started sliding to the side, and the screw was buried somewhere in the dirt at that point. It's an easy thing to fix, I just haven't had the time to go shooting, so it wasn't a high priority.

Even the NYT debunked it, in 2006.

Anyone bother to ask him why he was trying to obscure his face?

He just happened to have picked up a black face mask lying on the ground and was engaged in a personal anti-littering campaign?

Lying liar deserves a charge of reckless endangerment, at minimum.

Have there been ANY reports of gunfire? That's exactly the thing that would be breathlessly reported, so if not he's a f*cking liar.

The moment he picked up the can it became his. Same with a gun, bat, or half drunk bottle of Mad Dog.

He admitted he actively used a weapon offensively to defend someone else. What happens when you fire a gun even in defense of someone and with no injuries?

See also: f*cking liar.

Why not. They were engaged in an illegal act that resulted in the death of a person. If they were robbing a store and someone had died during robbery - because a bystander shot at them and hit someone else - they would still be charged with murder.

And furthermore, the sick embrace of Communism after the deaths of millions in the 20th century is just a disgusting as the Nazi sympathizers.

Antifa has committed more recent violence in recent history than any white racist group.

They're AVOWEDLY violent.

But they wrap themselves up in the flag of 'anti-racism' and we're supposed to accept it and consider it purifying to anything they then care to do.
