22 That is lovely. Caravaggio is simply amazing in his use of shadow and light. The fabric looks real.

Plus, the story is beautiful. Human fear and heart break, and the best part? Jesus utterly and completely forgave Peter, and allowed him to be a strong voice for the Church. So there is hope for a sinner like me.

"Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the
other disciples said the same

Unsurprisingly it was extremely short on substance and big on sliming.
One of his victims was Higgins, the fired Trump loyalist. He said Higgins memo was full of tin-foil conspiracies.
So I read the memo. Turns out Higgins is spot on which is clearly why he was fired. He has an excellent grasp of who is doing what and why. Either Dunnitz does not, or he's just a POS.

56 Caravaggio was the Michael Jackson of his day. Greatest artist, but a child molestor. He even includes naked kids in a sexual manner in some of his art which rich, modern child molestors collect (Smithsonian or some other major magazine did a whole piece on the subject). Caravaggio was always dramatic which made pieces like this interesting, but he was a child molestor all the same. Of course classical Greece before him was actually a full on child molestor culture (it was a preferred form of sexuality that involved all major figures from about the 7th century BC forward) so a lot of the art on which the Renaissance was based came from a longtime child molestor tradition which is seen in the art of Greece. All the Olympian gods but one had child molestor myths associated with them, 50 such myths in all, and the art and culture portrayed that and acted out on it. So a Renaissance child molestor like Caravaggio had the Greeks before him to learn from. Sick but true.

65 Peter and Judas. Both were called by Jesus to be His disciple. Both listened as He taught the Sermon on the Mount. Both watched as He gave sight to the blind man. Both watched as He made the lame man walk. Both watched as He fed over five thousand people with a boy's packed lunch. Both sat at the Passover meal with Him as He broke the bread and gave the cup.

Both denied Him. Both ran away as Jesus headed for the crucifixion. Both were wretchedly sorry afterwards. One went on to be the foremost of the apostles. The other killed Himself.

There are two roads. Two choices. One Jesus.

Look, I get it. You're making a point. It matters however, that this was part of the culture. It's not easier to accept and forgive, but you can stare down anybody in history, and throw labels at them. That's a big part of the problem we're having RIGHT NOW with this Confederate statute hysteria.

You can look back in history, and point out where they were wrong, but can we just knock it off already with the show trials?

87 Oh my! The power of this painting is incredible. The deep earthy colors setting a mood but the dawn light providing illumination of the figures and highlights on the folds of cloth and figured armor. Even the grouping of the three people, so close together, shows the tension and gravity of the situation. The scene is well known but Caravaggio makes us hear the words and see the action. There is nothing static about the painting.

I may be seeing things unintended, but it looks to me there is a crucifix in the white highlight on the Roman's armor. Also, the rough heavy timber in the background suggests the cross carried by Christ.

And, speaking of art, thugs splattered red paint on a monument in Piedmont Park in Atlanta, depicting an angel standing over a Confederate soldier as he lays down his weapon, preparing to embrace peace and come together as a nation.

Police were not able to identify anyone who did damage to the statue. The department welcomes any information or evidence that could lead to an arrest. That there is NO equal protection under the law. If you are a white conservative, or if you want to see something like, oh, people being fined/jailed for destroying public property, you are going to be laughed at in your face.

However, take one step to stop the removal or take action to erect a cross on the side of the road where you friend was killed in a car accident and see how quickly you land in jail.

Or decide to not sign marriage certificates for a gay wedding,

Or.....

183 Ge , I guess you guys missed it.

Once those statues came down, crime fell to 0% in black neighborhoods.

Literacy rates among black rose to 100%.

Every black person in America now has a job.

Every black child now comes from an intact family with a mother and father in the same household.

Substance abuse among blacks has been totally eradicated.

You see, none of those problems were their fault.

It was all the fault of some statues.

I think he's traditionally depicted that way. 223 An important thing for the "muh democracy" crowd to remember: the very essence of a monument or memorial is to comemmorate something across generations. Context or reception can change over time, but it is a way to preserve sentiment, emotion, as well as factual information. It is not a coincidence that "memorial" refers to memory, because it is a sharing of memory from those who went before.

The placing of monuments is not done lightly, the removal should be undertaken with far more seriousness yet, because they *are* history. To place monuments at risk to transient follies of a single elected administration is the height of foolishness - because those who would like a monument to remain most then win *every* battle. To destroy, enemies would have to win only once. That is a rejection of republican principle in the guise of endorsement, because it grants the destructor a disproportionate power.

A history book can lie, a history book can lie about a monument, and even a monument can lie - but the lies of the first two can change. The last is a snapshot of another time and therefore not subject to what we would later choose to believe of ourselves - for good or ill.

In short, only an ignoramus would endorse the right of a town council to deface at will.

Interesting interview, completely ignored by all other media because the statue of a confederate general who died over 145 years ago is a major civil rights issue.
Never mind that said general fought for the US government in the Mexican American War, was considered one of the best graduates ever from West Point, had a barracks built and named for him at West Point in1962, and was a big supporter of Andrew Jackson's reconstruction and reintergration of the south and confederate soldiers back into the newly reunited USA.

He was an engineer who helped do engineering work such as mapping out harbors in St. Louis and delineating the state line between Ohio and Michigan.

After the war, he lost his plantation at Arlington and the right to vote. Despite this , he became president of Washington University in Charlottesville, now known (for at least a few more days) as Washington and Lee university, where he is buried(And I'm sure there is talk of disinterring him)

There is a quote in which he said he did not believe that blacks should be given "special rights and privileges" to make up for slavery because in his opinion, blacks and whites were friendly before the war and after and to elevate them would destroy that. He was working to unite all Americans.

And he is once again fighting racists, carpetbaggers , and divisionists from the north.

251 If anyone here is so inclined, please pray for the mother of our newly arrived African student. She is sick, and he's worried to death. The "health care" in his country is pretty lousy.

The next time my husband's spoiled 30-something niece shrieks about the U. S. having the "worst health care in the world!!!!eleventy!!!" I'd like to put her on a plane to Zimbabwe. One-way ticket.

And the next time she crows about wanting single payer, I'll suggest she get her care at the VA.

Poles-the Polish are unbelievably devout. Churches-Catholic, Orthodox, and the two Protestant ones in Warsaw- are full over the weekend, and during the week. Holy days are national holidays, and everything closes. At Christmas, the malls are full of young girls dressed as angels selling oplatki-the wafer Polish families share on Christmas eve to foreshadow the Eucharist, and all the money goes to orphanages. There was a convent and monastery near our home, and we saw the novitiates every day, and they were lovely.

I hope Italy is the same, because that gives me hope that the Faith will remain, and gain strength. When the world gets bad, we will need it.

I disagree there is no risk. Our current climate in this country points to a risk to everything not Marxist. Particularly since it's a college.

The vast majority of government officials have no honor nor morals. And that has begun to show up in the military. The commander of the Coast Guard and now the Navy have come out in defiance of the President's EO regarding transgenders.
With absolutely no fear of repercussions, such as a court martial.

So I wouldn't rest too easy on VMI being some kind of savior , as all of the institutions have been infiltrated by the Marxists.

I don't expect much administratively from his Presidency because the entire governmental structure currently in the U.S. is actively working against him. Jackson and Joel, no argument there. Take away 5 songs and they're forgettable.

Have a friend who hates Billy Joel with the heat of 1000 suns. Because as he puts it, Joel's songs are all about how he's better than the other characters in his songs, and incidentally, better than his own audience. I don't have the patience to weed through Joel's lyrics to see if it's true or not.

I love Kosciuszkco (but can't pronounce his name). He was almost appointed head of the Papal States army after the American Revolution. Imagine what might have happened if the best defensive mind of his era had been in charge of the defense of Italy from Napoleon.

But today they are on the front lines of the fight for freedom in this world, and I think that their traditional Jew-hate is easing significantly. When I see Poland in the news it is always positive (maybe not for the NY Times, but for me).

Well, that's definitely true of Piano Man. To the point of someone in the song asking him why he's there, because he's not a lonely loser like everybody else - and the answer is also in the song: he's there because he's just so great and spreading his Joelic Mercy in the form of his music.

For which, people actually seem to be nearly worshipping him.

Inasmuch as people identify with the "9 o'clock on a Saturday(?)" crowd in the song, they are in that "worship me and I shall grant thee my blessings" category by default.

It's not about destroying it, it's about blurring it around the edges. To remove any idea of nobility in those who were defeated, to smudge away nuance, and to claim the right to control that history entirely at will and without challenge. To change it from a complex and knotty problem that our country overcame to a one-sentence partly-redressed grievance.

As to throwing in one's lot with Nazis, you have the cart before the horse. Most resistance to defacement has good guys involved, and this protest had Nazis stapled onto it to drive away the legitimate, not vice versa. It worked, other orgs left. The media (and bought and paid for Nazis?) wish to tar monument defense with nazism, and shying away from legitimate argument plays into their hands.

Friday nights were the big days at the bar downtown I used to hang out at. Saturdays were dead except during fall football games. But normally the entire town emptied out on Saturday and went down to the beach.

387 >>>I am with BSG - panties are way too bunched. No one is attempting to erase the Civil War - even all the Leftist progtards who just want to destroy everything.

Thank you!

This is all a bunch of let's spin up outrage about something something. Lee and Jackson are at no risk where they actually lived and served. W&L is safe, VMI is safe, Fort Lee is safe, West Point is safe, etc etc The Army War College is not going to stop its Gettysburg Staff Rides.

All that is happening is some cities which had virtually no connection to Confederate figures are looking at statues erected in the 20s and going "wait, why?" - and I think that's perfectly fine for them to ask. Baltimore, Charlottesville - these aren't areas strongly linked to Lee or Jackson. This ain't the end of the world (or cultural Marxism as someone claimed earlier). And it ain't erasing history.

for each song, 3 producers , 16 engineers. That's how all of pop music
is today. it's like a laboratory.

Insty linked to an article about how almost all pop songs today are written by 5 or 6 people. This is why they all sound the same (OK, some of that may be me getting older, too!). Someone like Beyonce may get songwriting credit for simply changing a few words of someone else's song.

It was reported that prior to the run-up of OCare the WH talked with AARP, insurance giants and pharma about using their funds to promote the program in return for the "guaranteed" profits. The reporting I read said that the main Pharma companies were told their profits would be "guaranteed" by sales, enrollment and subsidies but capped at 5 Billion per annum if they played ball. I remember AARP went all out with 20-25 million in advertisements and some pharmas did the same.

If I recall correctly, when they divorced her perspective on it, in legal proceedings, and in the court of public opinion was essentially:

"I'm Christie Brinkley. I mean, look at me, then look at him. He's a troll. And you have no idea how much uglier he is on the inside than he is on the outside. No. Idea."

398 Slavery was endemic in most of the world - it has existed for thousands of years. My ancestors - on my mother's side - were Roman slaves, J.J's were Egyptian slaves. What is unique about slavery in the United States is that as a result of the outcome of our Civil War slavery was banned and outlawed here.

In other words America stands as shining light and example to the rest of the world. It is because of our example that very little of the world endures slavery today.

Now that is the truth and it needs to be shoved down the throat of every lying Progressive until they gag on it. Do not let the left get away with their lies - they were the slave owners - which is why they are trying to erase their history. They can FOAD.

It was standard practice in many eras, in fact until quite recently, to re-imagine the past in the clothing and accessories of the present. The soldier looks more like a Spanish conquistador, which was current (or very recent) at the time this was painted.

This is something that demands nuance. I'd agree with you that at the moment, there's no cause to leave. We won in November, and we are opposed by a smaller number of a**holes who unfortunately occupy influential positions. I haven't given up hope yet.

But remember that scene in Being John Malkovich in which he entered his own head and everyone looked like John Malkovich? What if everyone was Barack Obama? I'd want to leave then, and history has no bearing on that.

To use an illustration from the NT (since that is the art today), remember how the disciples obsessed on the Temple, on their history - they wanted a temporal king to restore their glory. Jesus said, "no - it's all going to be destroyed". If I see that happening here, I'm not going to deny it just because of our past.
