It's been a while since I read The Odyssey and maybe there are nuances lost in translation, but IIRC he was basically a prisoner of Calypso.
Don't try too hard to map modern morality onto the ancient Greeks. It's not one-to-one. (Judge them and the characters all you want, but be aware that their values were different.)

I don't love it, but do a search on his illustrations, there are some cool ones. Maybe it's that the painting's colors are better suited for an illustration in a book (where that yellow glow would jump off the page) vs. a painting on a wall. This guy did a lot - paintings, murals, book illustrations, magazine covers.

This painting, and others he did for The Odyssey, take a grander view (Olympian?) of the scenes with brighter, more solid and less blended colors. The resulting contrast really brings out each figure and parts of the background. Wyeth's paintings are usually dramatic but this takes it to another level and effectively so.
Now I have to keep an eye open for a copy of his illustrated version.

That reminds me of a thing. (I don't know what else to call it, sorry.) A lot of ancient names and terms have be repurposed and applies to newer discoveries or animals and what have you, making a literal reading of those stories strange.
Like "nymph." I see that word, I usually think of the "insect larva" definition, and it's weird. Others, like Echidna, are more interesting.
My favorite is the actual hydra, which is a lot smaller than the Hydra Hercules had to kill.

Could be that he was trying to evoke the feelings of a mythical land inhabited by nymphs by using unnatural colors and proportions. Homer was a story filled with giants and cyclops and gods, not exactly realistic.

I think Newell Convers Wyeth was trying to evoke Greek art on pottery etc, but it just doesn't work. He's my least favorite of the Wyeth painters but most of his stuff is better than this.

AOP will remember, some years ago the otherwise-award winning Studebaker club magazine had a small feature, and referred to the great career of their late creator. All very nice.
The next month there's a Letter to The Editor from Bill Frick that says, "Actually I'm not quite dead yet." Admittedly, some guys are harder to fact-check than others. So, there was another great article, and then when Bill finally did die, one hell of an obit.

It's a really neat story. It was discovered by a guy who was trying to find evidence for Biblical events. He ended up translating cuneiform. The first half is filled with quests against giants and monsters. The second half of the story is about the meaning of life and death.

I think it's not pottery, but bas relief. The image in the foreground, not so much the background. The profiles are there. It's more a hint at, rather than a straight up depiction of.

It's the kind of thing that Joseph Campbell got into-- not exactly the Hero's Journey, but related-- Bad Stuff has to happen, but not too bad (like Odysseus didn't lose his arms), and the hero has to triumph in some way. (See also Job, I guess.)
I wonder if there's also embellishment going on, with later "drafts" (remember, oral tradition!) getting more and more stuff thrown in. Or (and this is me spitballing) a modular approach. Like, there's 10 (or whatever) chapters, but aside from the first, the last, and maybe another one or two, the others are pretty optional, depending on the audience, time of day, etc., and one wouldn't expect to hear *all* of it.
Like some of the 1980's NES games, without passwords and saves. How often are you gonna play all of Super Mario Bros. 3, start to end, in one sitting? After a certain point, you're gonna use a Warp Whistle and go to Big Island, and then maybe another world, and then warp to the final world so you can fight Bowser.

Sure, storytellers wouldn't be able to tell the entire legend at once. Plus, they built on each other, borrowed previous stories and adapted them to their character, and so on.
Plus, you keep people listening by leaving them at the end of the day's storytelling with a cliffhanger: Odysseus is trapped on Calypso's Island longing for Penelope and home. How will he and his men escape the Cyclops? Will he make it past Scylla and Charybdis safely? Brings em back the next day. Each episode one a day.

I sort of assumed Raising Arizona was at least somewhat based on some early work, Greek or otherwise, but I'm not schooled enough in ancient literature to know how or where.
Otherworldly is a good description. Coen brothers films, and Wes Anderson films share this trait: They look an awful lot like this world, but there's something off, just a beat or two.

A few things. If the thing is totally invulnerable, then it can't be killed, and, well, then what? Herc gets eaten end of story. It must have a weakness that can be exploited.
As to the power of regeneration, I think you are reading too much into it. Only the heads regenerate, and then it is 2 for one.
Going back to look it up, the Hydra had 9 heads, one of which was immortal. Herc had to chop and burn 8, then take the 9th, immortal head, and cut it off and bury it.

I know the 60's was a big hey-day for sword-and-sandal pictures, and every so often there's a Hercules movie, and there's that Clash of Titans remake and so on-- but they could be the next Big Thing, maybe as a shift from superhero movies?

When you think you've got a "movement" going, you got to always keep something going on, to keep your followers jazzed and to keep them from walking away, since most of them are just there for the emotional high. So it doesn't really matter what it is that you do, as long as it's *something*, and it's got to be something that allows your followers to vent a lot of emotional energy, since that's what makes them feel good, that's all they're really in the game for.
When you look at it from this perspective, you can see that it's highly advantageous to pick some goal that can never really be reached, that your followers can bang their heads against and scream and scream and scream but never get anywhere. Because if they DID get everything they wanted, they would get bored and walk away and you would be out of a job.
Now what's been happening is that our society has been weak and stupid enough to let them keep winning on stupid things, so that their demands HAVE to keep getting more and more extreme, just so they can keep the outrage train rolling.

He noted that white supremacists are just as left wing as black ones. He says that they want socialism too, just with them in charge. Neither of them believe in small constitution, limited government freedom. They both want the government to be powerful and in charge and crushing their enemies.

Driver clearly intentionally rammed his car into a crowd of people. When he backed up and went forward again into the crowd after hitting people? Yeah, sorry, that was no accident or the result of fleeing or confusion.
Did this guy go there with the intention of doing this? I dunno. That is certainly too early to tell, he could have been driving and then his car hit with rocks or whatever and then he got mad and decided to run people down.
Regardless, you run with Nazis, it is really hard to make a "I am just an innocent" defense.

Just a quick point of order: The end game is strategic, by definition.
As others have pointed out, the tactical goal is to cause chaos and stir up as many people as possible. Either afraid or angry is acceptable, as either one will supposedly have the people demand a change in the status quo.
The strategic goal is to then ride that demand for change into power. And once there, cement their hold upon it.
