During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books, 25 of them for Scribner Classics, which is the work for which he is best known. The first of these, Treasure Island, was one of his masterpieces and the proceeds paid for his studio.

A robust, powerfully built young man with strangely delicate hands, he ate a lot less than his size implied.

Ha, funny. The thing is, there's constant interference by the gods in these myths. There weren't any atheists or unbelievers back then because Zeus and Co. were running around seducing people and shape-changing and just meddling in general all the time.

And the mortals couldn't do a thing about it.

I don't love it, but do a search on his illustrations, there are some cool ones. Maybe it's that the painting's colors are better suited for an illustration in a book (where that yellow glow would jump off the page) vs. a painting on a wall. This guy did a lot - paintings, murals, book illustrations, magazine covers.

Posted by: Lizzy at August 14, 2017 09:41 AM (NOIQH)

103 I had no idea Wyeth had done illustrations for The Odyssey. I really like this although it is quite different from the Treasure Island, Robin Hood and similar books. I notice this was done around 1929, later than the ones I mentioned. I wonder if this showed an evolving style or if it was simply how he saw The Odyssey.

This painting, and others he did for The Odyssey, take a grander view (Olympian?) of the scenes with brighter, more solid and less blended colors. The resulting contrast really brings out each figure and parts of the background. Wyeth's paintings are usually dramatic but this takes it to another level and effectively so.

Now I have to keep an eye open for a copy of his illustrated version.

Thanks, CBD, for showing me another side to a favorite painter.

I have to think the "prisoner" part would wear on me after a while, but who knows.

That reminds me of a thing. (I don't know what else to call it, sorry.) A lot of ancient names and terms have be repurposed and applies to newer discoveries or animals and what have you, making a literal reading of those stories strange.

Like "nymph." I see that word, I usually think of the "insect larva" definition, and it's weird. Others, like Echidna, are more interesting.

My favorite is the actual hydra, which is a lot smaller than the Hydra Hercules had to kill.

243 Its kind of unfair to blame him for what happened to his men, for the most part he tried to protect them and keep them save, but his ship was assaulted by every nasty thing in mythic Mediterranean.

It's the kind of thing that Joseph Campbell got into-- not exactly the Hero's Journey, but related-- Bad Stuff has to happen, but not too bad (like Odysseus didn't lose his arms), and the hero has to triumph in some way. (See also Job, I guess.)

I wonder if there's also embellishment going on, with later "drafts" (remember, oral tradition!) getting more and more stuff thrown in. Or (and this is me spitballing) a modular approach. Like, there's 10 (or whatever) chapters, but aside from the first, the last, and maybe another one or two, the others are pretty optional, depending on the audience, time of day, etc., and one wouldn't expect to hear *all* of it.

Like some of the 1980's NES games, without passwords and saves. How often are you gonna play all of Super Mario Bros. 3, start to end, in one sitting? After a certain point, you're gonna use a Warp Whistle and go to Big Island, and then maybe another world, and then warp to the final world so you can fight Bowser.

*Exactly* like that. Exactly.

Sure, storytellers wouldn't be able to tell the entire legend at once. Plus, they built on each other, borrowed previous stories and adapted them to their character, and so on.

Plus, you keep people listening by leaving them at the end of the day's storytelling with a cliffhanger: Odysseus is trapped on Calypso's Island longing for Penelope and home. How will he and his men escape the Cyclops? Will he make it past Scylla and Charybdis safely? Brings em back the next day. Each episode one a day.

I sort of assumed Raising Arizona was at least somewhat based on some early work, Greek or otherwise, but I'm not schooled enough in ancient literature to know how or where.

Otherworldly is a good description. Coen brothers films, and Wes Anderson films share this trait: They look an awful lot like this world, but there's something off, just a beat or two.

274 The old-timers didn't understand the notion of odds and chance, and weren't willing to think of their world as mere chaos, and therefore their gods were willful and of changing mood and mind. Not the most inspiring faiths, but then "we" expect something different from a god.

We've hit a lot of the other literary (Bruce and Brown) allusions, so I'll just note so others may recall, the statue that honors Scott of the Antarctic quotes the last lines of Tennyson's Ulysses, which is about what happens when the hero gets old, sort of.

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Nazi salutes. Not waving, not high fiving, it had to be nazi salutes. And this was so terrible she had to hide her children's eyes. I'm reminded of Christian parents hustling children away so they don't see a boob on an old sculpture. This isn't even rational, its a new ten commandments.

281 Odysseus would never work now. Just one book, pffft, you need at the very least a trilogy. Hopefully a ten books series or recycled plot lines.

You could never hold a door open with the Odyssey!

All you have to do is do a "recap" at the beginning of each book, which gets longer each book of course.

317 I'm going to throw my .02 about Charlottesville in particular and identity politics in general here.

Every group out there has picked Whitey, specifically men, as the enemy to be hated and defeated. BLM, NBPP, Antifa, LaRaza, NOW, the whole cabal. They do it to gain power at the expense of some other out-group. In the past decades, they've been rather successful with this strategy.
obama's years have emboldened them to the point of overt hatred instead of faux victimhood, and whites in general, men in particular, are the targets.
We've noticed, and the alt-right is at least partially made up of folks who just want to say "Hey, we're not so bad. We've done some good things, and by the way, what happened to all that "equality" bs you've been spouting for decades?"

tl;dr

If skin color is to be your uniform, tribing-up is to be expected.

Like the Hydra. Okay, it's a monster (usually depicted as a multi-headed dragon) who grows two new heads if you cut its head off, so you can't kill it by cutting off its head.

Now, what I would do, is keep cutting off heads until it has several dozen tiny ones, or get its feet, or something.

But not Herc! He gets an assistant (his brother, I want to say, but it wouldn't *have* to be his brother, it could be anyone, really) to hold a torch over the neck-wound and seal it, so nothing grows back.

I don't see how that would work on such a beast, but maybe there's a time limit after the first decapitation, and it would grow back if you don't keep at it?

Sessions was set-up, positioned, in his confirmation, by the accusations of racism. That will push him to refute them by actions as we are seeing. The Russian recusal was another set-up that fired early on.

349 LeBron could sit down when the anthem is played. And Mark Cuban could also. I think that would clear the air.

Or maybe publish lists of who could speak and who couldn't in a public forum. Clear the air so that the people who provide their wealth would know how they feel.

And the NBA would fine them. The NBA has a rule in place that athletes must stand for the National Anthem. But Cuban despite being an owner, doesn't know that.

Just remember, being a billionaire doesn't mean someone is actually smart. They can be a lemming ideologue such as Cuban or they can actually mature and grow by independent thought such as Trump.

The Dodge Challenger now represents white supremacy and violence against the oppressed masses. I mean, like, I am literally having an emotional reaction right now as I type this.

I mean, the very word "Challenger" sounds like white supremacy and an affront to social justice.

That's why I am demanding that the governors of every state prohibit Dodge Challengers from being on the road.

Like Confederate statutes, they represent white supremacy and black oppression.

If these cars are not removed from the road, and if Dodge doesn't stop making them, then we in the antifa will be forced to take action against the owners, the governors who fail to act and Dodge Motors.

381 I'm going to throw my .02 about Charlottesville in particular and identity politics in general here.

We've done some good things, and by the way, what happened to all that "equality" bs you've been spouting for decades?"

tl;dr

Posted by: OneEyedJack at August 14, 2017 10:39 AM (z79tQ)

All I noticed is that the blacks can riot, and beat up on whitey, and nobody says shit. Their supporters and the media say oh it righteous anger.

A group has a protest concerned over the ISIS style of systematically wiping out our history, they bus in another racist group, the BLM as a counter protest, then THIS particular group of whitey says oh fuck you, and now its pearl clutching time.

I realize J.P. Sartre was a commie f*ck. But he had a valuable insight in his philosophy. Consciousness becomes something else at every instant. You cannot rest on your laurels. Anguish is the realization that "I am what I will be, in the mode of non-being". Thus the soldier who did a courageous act has anguish, because the next time the occasion arises, he may act like a coward.

Liberals need to be schooled in this observation (by an arch liberal) that the present is how you evaluate things.

I guess I would think that the lion's neck would be tough enough to not be strangled, at least not before the lion claws your eyes out. Or something.

So growing 2 heads in place of one on a 12 headed beast is TOTES okay with you, but cauterization, man, that's weird?

Heh, not really, but yeah, it's crazy. My brain is weird in that it'll accept some supernatural or insane thing as ok in-universe, but then some application of logic makes something else unravel.

Let me try again. This is a supernatural creature with incredible powers of regeneration. Why shouldn't it heal a burn?

And do the heads each have their own brain, do they operate independently? Could it eat or otherwise survive if it has too many heads? What if you stab it in the heart, or cut off its limbs? Or roast it?

Also, the image of Herc cutting off a head, the other guy cauterizing the wound, Herc cutting off another head, etc. just seems weird, if not comical. Is the beast drugged, or pinned? How dangerous is this thing, actually?

422 I realize J.P. Sartre was a commie f*ck. But he had a
valuable insight in his philosophy. Consciousness becomes something
else at every instant. You cannot rest on your laurels. Anguish is the
realization that "I am what I will be, in the mode of non-being". Thus
the soldier who did a courageous act has anguish, because the next time
the occasion arises, he may act like a coward.

A few things. If the thing is totally invulnerable, then it can't be killed, and, well, then what? Herc gets eaten end of story. It must have a weakness that can be exploited.

As to the power of regeneration, I think you are reading too much into it. Only the heads regenerate, and then it is 2 for one.

Going back to look it up, the Hydra had 9 heads, one of which was immortal. Herc had to chop and burn 8, then take the 9th, immortal head, and cut it off and bury it.

O.0 in the webcomic, the heroes kill a hydra by continually lopping heads off (which then grow back double) until the monster passes out from a lack of blood due to having too damn many heads.

Yeah, it would have to be a big battle, not just the condensed description/summation I'm been invoking.

Those ancient myths are just begging to be done by Hollywood again. I know the 60's was a big hey-day for sword-and-sandal pictures, and every so often there's a Hercules movie, and there's that Clash of Titans remake and so on-- but they could be the next Big Thing, maybe as a shift from superhero movies?

I mean, they're almost tailor-made for expensive CGI, so they'd be a perfect fit.

448 "No, I get the strategic goal, my question is about the tactical goal. What is advanced by these protests? Is the idea to foment race war? To attack Trump? To act as a recruiting tool?"

When you think you've got a "movement" going, you got to always keep something going on, to keep your followers jazzed and to keep them from walking away, since most of them are just there for the emotional high. So it doesn't really matter what it is that you do, as long as it's *something*, and it's got to be something that allows your followers to vent a lot of emotional energy, since that's what makes them feel good, that's all they're really in the game for.

When you look at it from this perspective, you can see that it's highly advantageous to pick some goal that can never really be reached, that your followers can bang their heads against and scream and scream and scream but never get anywhere. Because if they DID get everything they wanted, they would get bored and walk away and you would be out of a job.

Now what's been happening is that our society has been weak and stupid enough to let them keep winning on stupid things, so that their demands HAVE to keep getting more and more extreme, just so they can keep the outrage train rolling.

For me, the statues and historical signs throughout the South help understand the sentiments of other Americans who fought against the Union.

I always joke that the Confederacy is the proudest Army to ever come in second place in a war.

Those Confederates have us their sons, who died on the battlefields of Europe in two world wars. They laid down their arms and Abraham Lincoln welcomed them back into the fold.

I think there is enough of the country that sees this for what it is now and have completely muted all of the wailing and whining...

This shit doesn't stir up if it wasn't for the left whipping up racial politics again because they have NOTHING else left in the deck.

People are pissed off and not because of white supremecy they're pissed off because they just want to be left the fuck alone and not have a oppressive nanny state and its abusive true believers push them towards something that is not in the soul and genetics of the American person.

The American person is not defined by someone who is born here. The American person is a believer in the American idea of freedom. Trump is a symptom, not cause.

This has been just below boiling temp for about a generation....

You cannot spend a generation calling a group of Americans Evil, for things they personally never did... and then enforce collective punishment... and expect things to go well.

America was founded on the primacy of the individual.... on the Sovereign Citizen... yet now we are categorized BY OUR OWN GOVERNMENT, by RACE, and Sex, into winners and losers.

They have corrupted the American dream....

483 This has been just below boiling temp for about a generation....

You cannot spend a generation calling a group of Americans Evil, for things they personally never did... and then enforce collective punishment... and expect things to go well.

You can only kick a dog for so long before he bites your ass.

484 Jeff Sessions: "It does meet the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute."

If that kid ran over people for their politics, it is domestic terrorism.

And when mobs started smashing his car with baseball bats before the ramming occurred because of politics, that is domestic terrorism also.

And if Democrat officials conspired to enable a riot because of politics, that is domestic terrorism, too.

485 I fear this will all end in blood and fire, and nothing good will rise from the ashes. And the left is pushing and pushing more for it every day.

They mistake restraint and patience with weakness. A fatal error many times through history.

486 People are not allowed to feel pride of their European decent, culture, and history. They are only allowed to feel shame and hate it. They will be made to destroy it.

This is what we are up against and its been going on for a very very long time.

488 The local authorities too. Even if they didn't order a stand down, they allowed two groups of protesters to come into contact with one another and allowed a car to enter the area of the protests. They fucked up.
Posted by: JoeF. at August 14, 2017 11:25 AM (7uYFy)

Worse, the Police were DIRECTING people on where to go... and made the White folks walk a Gauntlet of AntiFa types to get to their 'protest' site....

So their attempt to shame them, of course led to violence.

There were at least two cars in front of him who weren't attacked and managed to not run anyone over. Maybe more comes out, but right now I think he's in a bad position.

Yeah, no.

Driver clearly intentionally rammed his car into a crowd of people. When he backed up and went forward again into the crowd after hitting people? Yeah, sorry, that was no accident or the result of fleeing or confusion.

Did this guy go there with the intention of doing this? I dunno. That is certainly too early to tell, he could have been driving and then his car hit with rocks or whatever and then he got mad and decided to run people down.

Regardless, you run with Nazis, it is really hard to make a "I am just an innocent" defense.

[snip]

No, I get the strategic goal, my question is about the tactical goal. What is advanced by these protests? Is the idea to foment race war? To attack Trump? To act as a recruiting tool?
Posted by: joncelli, Ray of Freakin' Sunshine at August 14, 2017 11:04 AM (RD7QR)

Just a quick point of order: The end game is strategic, by definition.

As others have pointed out, the tactical goal is to cause chaos and stir up as many people as possible. Either afraid or angry is acceptable, as either one will supposedly have the people demand a change in the status quo.

The strategic goal is to then ride that demand for change into power. And once there, cement their hold upon it.
