Can America Survive, Intact?
A correspondent asks this of Rod Dreher, asking if it would not be better for the country to divide into two or three smaller nations and each say goodbye forever to the others.
Dreher says the country can't survive, but it also can't split, because there are no easy lines of geographical division, so we're in for some violent, bad times ahead. I never get this objection that there are no "easy" ways to divide the country. Of course there are. Hold a county-by-county referendum about which of the American successor states the people would like to affiliate with. Add in some rules about "islands" -- whether they'll be permitted, or if the new states will have to be contiguous, or if land will be conceded to another state to connect the "island" to the state it wants to belong to. These things can be worked out. One of the weirdest things I hear people object to is the thought they'd have to move if the country divided. Oh? You'll have to move? You mean, like you have to do when you're offered a better job than the one you have now? You mean you'll have to move like Americans used to do all the time -- sometimes even braving the Donner Pass? If it's not important enough to move, then, like a job which is somewhat enticing but not so much better than your current one you decide not to move, then don't move. If you're like "Eh, I guess I'd rather live in the blue America but I guess it doesn't matter too much," then you don't really care either way, and you can just sit tight without kvetching about all the moving other people will have to do. My belief on this is that if it is worth it to move to another state for a $10-15,000 salary increase, then it's worth it to have your own political destiny placed more securely in your own hands. If you're wigged out by the idea that you'll have to house-hunt and pack up a U-haul, well, what can I say -- stay in Blue America, son. Seems about your speed. Another bizarre objection I've heard -- seriously -- is that no one will agree to this because people like "Blue America's" TV shows too much. Um, we see tv shows from the BBC and even Canada. Do you really think that Hollywood won't allow its tv shows and movies to be broadcast in the Read American States? They put their stuff anywhere on the globe where there's a demand. And, again, if the chance that your favorite Premium Cable TV Show won't be available on HBO Red, then what can I say? Stay in Blue America -- obviously, TV is most important to you, and you've found your true home. Same thing with trade. The US and England almost immediately began trading with each other after two major wars. I think Blue America will have need of Red America's food, and I guess Red America will need Blue America's... FaceBook and iPhones, I guess. So we'll -- get this -- just trade in services and goods, as we do now.Another objection people have is that a Red America, without the (ahem) moderating influence of the intolerant, totalitarian fascist Blue America SJWs, would become too "extreme" and they wouldn't like to live under such a regime. 1, fine, stay in the Blue America, and 2, from what I've seen of the GOP, they are pretty damn liberal and I imagine many of their supporters are actually pretty liberal. So yeah, I expect a more conservative Red America, but not an extreme one. As I've said before: I want out. I want done. I do not wish to live among these people any longer, and from their daily purges and witch-hunts, it's pretty clear to me they feel the same. Unless they can coerce me into bending the knee-- which will not happen. The idea that we can keep the country together just by forcing the Deplorables to be re-educated... well, that way lies tremendous bloodshed. I don't expect this country to survive the increasingly violent divisions, and I believe a good divorce is much better than bitter, violent marriage. I think it's time to start proposing this seriously.

I think we can stay a republic and increase sates right somehow. Some kind of referendum that does not allow unelected judges to impose Tranny Bathrooms on states that don't want to participate in cultural suicide. A one time opt out to create special Judicial Exception Zones for some states.

If your company moves to what the shareholders believe are greener pastures, but those pastures don't have the right to keep and bear arms, and you want to be armed, then what? Move, or hope you can find a new, equivalent paying job where you are?
How does the economics stuff sort-out? Three nations with different labor rates, taxes, and costs of living (NY compared to Arkansas, for example), and vastly different natural resources, are going to set-up and operate some sort of mutual free-trade arrangement? Can be done, but not without a lot of start-up pains and then many, many unexpected consequences to sort-out as they come about.
I wish your wish could happen, but I'm extremely pessimistic.

It's about 7 years since I came to the conclusion that this is the best possible solution for what we face as a people. My mind hasn't changed since and I'm glad to see it brought up again.

I don't think a referendum by county will be granular enough. It think we'll need to do it by township, precinct, or even HOA. Nor do I think the option can be limited by blue, purple, mauve, and red. I think 16 color divisions will be needed. Probably in combination with 8 religious categories just to be complete.

You are only as secure as your borders, and we'd have Russia annexing the Ukrainians in New York State and China building more islands off the coast of California inside a decade, with liberals loudly declaring their peaceful resistance to these measures. Another problem would be what to do when the Democrat People's Republic of Blue America fails, as it inevitably does, and a flood of blue people washes south and west. That's what happened to Virginia. Mine has always been a five or ten year plan where you divide the country geographically into two the best you can based on political leaning and then during that time businesses and people can relocate to the country they prefer if not already there. The relocation businesses that would pop up because of the need would take care of most of the problems. During this period the powers to be would negotiate the division of assets and treaties would be created. It gets me excited just thinking about it.

My belief on this is that if it is worth it to move to another state for a $10-15,000 salary increase, then it's worth it to have your own political destiny placed more securely in your own hands

Don't keep discounting Cali. There are reports of millions of fraudulent voter registrations in the big cities like LA, SF, SD etc. That blue majority may not be as big or even real as we think. Trump just needs to get some cleansing of the corrupt voting system in order. Yah, the leftists here will fight it all the way but it is not necessarily the slam dunk it seems. I'm thinking of geographic division as a problem. Consider the Clinton/Trump election map by counties. There is a sea of red with islands of blue. Denver/Boulder would be surrounded by sanity. If a Blue Meanie wanted to go to a gay orgy in San Francisco, he'd have to go through or over Homophobialand. There could be free and tariffs. Also, I there would be a nuke gap. This is stupid. No, the country can't be split up. Yes there are 50 states and sometimes it seems as though we're headed for a break-up anyway. Hell, sometimes it feels like we are already split-up. But we have bases and airfields and missile silos spread out all over and they are being manned by soldiers from all over the 50 states. There are "blue" voters in Red states and (plenty of) red voters living in Blue states and people have family living all over. Even large states like California ( lol) and Texas couldn't make it on their own and would have to form alliances with other individual states or what's left of the USA. And the military bases in those states don't belong to to those states.

Listen, I'm no expert on the love thingThere are people I've hated (I've gotten over it mostly because I figured "They know not what they do" and years have gone by) and that is due to the Holy Spirit, not to anything within my self. But Hillary hasn't harmed me personally and neither has Al Gore. It's actually easier than you think. Remember that the Left gifted us with a takeover of public schools. We get federal standards for schools. Why not use it? Demand civics classes and American History (without Zinn). Impose standards on school textbooks, that lean Right not Left. Whip universities back in line, like cutting off student aid until they use their endowments. We could make major changes for the future of this country, if we had the will to use the tools in the way the Left does.

Biggest problem is the exit fee. Who is going to be stuck with the bill? There is $60,000 of national debt per person, and about ten or twenty times that in unfunded mandates. Seventy five years is not a long time in the lifetime of a country--ours, yes, as we're young, but I mean with the future ahead and leftists just having finally achieved (in this scenario) a chunk of what they want. OK they want more, so they continue patiently dividing in the now-smaller country they seek to take over. Do we then face losing a big chunk of THAT smaller country in less than a century?
Within less time in the future than our nation has already existed, they will have stolen the entire thing for themselves, and the last portion might not even be that difficult for them because we'll have shrunk so much in population and defense capabilities it'll be a cakewalk for them.
And, Ace, that "GOP is really liberal" angle you mention--you're right, as we here in Alaska saw (and have seen before) with Lisa Murkowski (and other states have seen it). I'm not convinced that will help us in the way you think it will, but rather just enable a speedier capitulation.
I joke a lot about California getting TFO, but in reality I say f*** them, let them feel the squeeze. Enact laws that dictate filming movies in the US (so they have to pay higher taxes), continue on the path of keeping money from sanctuary cities, make them and other states pay their own BS marketplace costs even though it will lead them down the tubes to construct their own idiotic one-payer systems, punish states that try to dictate to others what they can and cannot do.

Within less time in the future than our nation has already existed, they will have stolen the entire thing for themselves, and the last portion might not even be that difficult for them because we'll have shrunk so much in population and defense capabilities it'll be a cakewalk for them.
And, Ace, that "GOP is really liberal" angle you mention--you're right, as we here in Alaska saw (and have seen before) with Lisa Murkowski (and other states have seen it). I'm not convinced that will help us in the way you think it will, but rather just enable a speedier capitulation.
I joke a lot about California getting TFO, but in reality I say f*** them, let them feel the squeeze. Enact laws that dictate filming movies in the US (so they have to pay higher taxes), continue on the path of keeping money from sanctuary cities, make them and other states pay their own BS marketplace costs even though it will lead them down the tubes to construct their own idiotic one-payer systems, punish states that try to dictate to others what they can and cannot do.
Alaska fought to be a state against that very same BS, forced to dodge roadblocks because our existence as a state got in the way of Washington State's smooth operations and pocket-lining. I actually wasn't alive when this was being fought out, but today I'll be damed if I'll give up one red inch of Alaskan land.

I propose the following:a ballot with all 50 states listed on it. "Choose one state to throw out of the Union. You may vote for the last state you claimed residency in." Whoever gets the most votes gets voted out. CA would get the boot, i guarantee it and that's 70% of the problems gone. Blue CA, who voted to leave, would then turn into Mad Max. Red CA, who also voted to leave for totally different reasons, would hold their ground until the fires went out. Cut Jerry Brown's carcass down from the tree where the residents of Compton hanged him, re write CA's constitution, then apply to rejoin the Union.

We have major military installations on both coasts that we can't cede to the Left. If the entire west coast separates, plus Hawaii, we'd be hard pressed to support any military obligations in the Pacific (assuming there would be any after the split. Maybe we'd be too internally-focused to care.).

If you really want to return power to the states vice the federal government, repeal the 17th Amendment and let the states determine how to select their senators. The senate was supposed to represent the states, while the House represents the people.
The popular election of senators now allows their allegiance to parties at the national level. Repeal of the 17 Amendment breaks that.
If a senator goes against state sentiment (e.g., McCain), the governor can reel him in, or even replace him.
And if we now have 33 states in Republican hands, that would translate to 66 Republican senators. Who says we couldn't get sh*t done now?

Those counties that voted for Trump would stay in the United States of America, USA.
Those counties that voted for Hillary would become part of the new Soviet States of America, SSA.
This is a natural solution because

2. it would satisfy the Marxist/communists/socialists who want to live in a communist utopia, much like Chicago or NYC.
So, for instance, California would be split in two: the coastal areas would be in the SSA, while the inland areas, including the food growing Central Valley, would remain in the USA.
Similar situations would evolve in Illinois, Michigan, and New York.
The end result would be that all the people that work growing food, for instance, would be in the USA.
Religious folks could freely practice their religions, live in harmony with their families, and be productive.
Many urban manufacturing areas would be in the SSA.
Liberals could finally adopt big government as the basic social unit and get rid of families, much like they already have done in most big cities.
