Oregon State to Offer Social Justice Warriors New Courses in "Fat Studies"

It's about time.

You're very silly people. You know that, don't you?

Oregon State University will offer a spring course on "fat studies" in order to teach students how "weight-based oppression" is a "social justice issue."

My Big Fat Justice.

According to a syllabus for the course obtained by Campus Reform, students will examine "body weight, shape, and size as an area of human difference subject to privilege and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression based on gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and ability."

The course will be taught by Professor Patti Lou-Watkins, who has written extensively on "body image disorders, particularly as they relate to weight bias and physical activity" in academic journals and books...

Indeed, students enrolled in her spring Fat Studies course will be presented with opportunities to explore "forms of activism used to counter weightism perpetuated throughout various societal institutions."

This isn't OSU's only offering in the field of Fat Studies, either:

[A]nother class [being offered is] called "Women, Weight, and Body Image" similarly examining "weightism as a system of oppression that interacts with other systems of oppression" such as "sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, and ageism."

In a paper, Mz. Watkins noted:

"The field of fat studies has undergone tremendous growth in recent years."

I was going to say, but I didn't want to be insulting.

Art is one of those fields that requires basically no math. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Itself all use lots and lots of math.

So, yeah, nice try.

That being said-- introducing art and design into STEM-type curricula isn't a bad idea in itself-- industrial design is a thing, but not how that seem to be planning it.

Oh, and music, especially electronic music. Yeah.

So does this mean that Michelle Obama was oppressing obese children by focusing her time in the White House on fighting childhood obesity through her piss poor school lunch program?

Actually, I think her school lunch program was oppression of *all* school children.

But, by liberal logic, if obesity is now something that is an SJW issue, Michelle Obama was the lead enemy the past 8 years.

By the way, is there some sort of chart which shows at what age "obesity" changes from an evil (childhood obesity) to a social justice issue?

Are liberals now saying that when one becomes a legal adult at age 18, their obesity changes from something to fight to something to promote?

166 Obesity kills more people every year and puts a far greater strain on our health care system than bullets. Why "Fatness" would be celebrated on college campuses is beyond me.

Posted by: Ernie McCracken at August 11, 2017 01:53 PM (6/BW5)

167 I want to say something.

This sentence:

"an area of human difference subject to privilege and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression"

contains the word "intersects."

Which means that Fat Studies is part of the new field called "Intersectionality."

All of academia has now been consumed by this new fad "Intersectionality."

Wikipedia describes it as "overlapping or intersecting social identities and related systems of oppression, domination, or discrimination."

But what it came from is this:

Marxism invented "identity politics" to fracture society into dissatisfied subgroups, to create social disintegration.

But then they discovered that this had an unintended side-effect: With all these different groups huddled in their chauvinistic tribes, they couldn't get along with each and were constantly in competition for the Victimhood Scepter. And this was messing up the Left's attempts to create a unified front against capitalism.

But how can they make blacks, women, gays, etc. etc. find common ground, now that they've been riven into warring factions?

The idea arose to find out those areas where the dissatisfaction of each group "intersected" with the dissatisfaction of another group.

So they women said, "Well, we hate white straight men. They oppress us because they're men!"

And the blacks said, "Well, we hate white straight men. They oppress us because they're white!"

And the gays said, "Well, we hate white straight men. They oppress us because they're straight!"

So the lightbulb went off overhead everyone's head and they said, "Hey, our complaints intersect! Although we're coming from different places on the social spectrum, we all hate the same thing!"

So someone came up with the idiotic and frankly bizarre notion to name the new movement after the fact that the complaints overlapped, rather than naming it after the specific thing they all were focused on.

So "identity politics" was rebranded as "Intersectionality," as a euphemism for what it really was, "Anti-Straight-White-Man-ism."

But then we were off to the races. Because once we got the term Intersectionality, every fringe subgroup could join the party and add their criteria to the mix.

So now, as we see here, we have fat people saying they hate normal-sized people, so the scapegoat evolves to Straight White THIN Men.

And the trannies jump in the fray, so now it's Straight White thin CISGENDER Men.

And on and on and on.

/rant off

Everyone can do everything that everyone else can do, and even though they can't actually prove that they can do everything, and we accept that with all of our heart because Mother Gaia created each one of us to be exactly the same, and there are no differences at all between any human anywhere. Here's one I just tried last weekend and it was terrific. From the Meathead grilling cookbook:

Meatheads Memphis Dust

Makes about 3 cups
Takes 15 minutes

Mix up and crumble sugar if lumpy, the following:

3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup paprika (I used Smoked Sweet Paprika)
1/4 cup garlic powder
2 T freshly ground black pepper
2 T ground ginger
2 T onion powder

I taught Satellite Communications in the Navy, AND Microsoft Certified Network Engineer Courses as a civilian...

When you have an unqualified person in your class... you have to spend MUCH more time with them to try to get them up to speed.... you spend so much time dumbing stuff down, that your qualified students get short changed...

You are soon spending 90% of your time, with those 10% of students who shouldn't be there in the first place.

292 "Oh, there's no logic - or consistency!"

Yes there is. Two courses were mentioned. That means you need instructors. And a secretary. You will need office space and a couple of lecture rooms. Office supplies and equipment.

That means you will need a budget. And someone to administer the budget. Someone to direct and coordinate all of this. The department will have to offer more course offerings, to the point an assistant dean and support staff will be needed.

It may even balloon into its own department of studies, with doctoral courses, a branch library, its own building and plenty of administrators to make sure that all of the proper forms are followed so that the grants and funding will be guaranteed.

There's lots of empire-building and money to be had so yes, it is very logical and consistent.

302 I looked it up on the internet and learned that Gaga and her doctor
claim she suffers from PTSD from touring too hard and now she is a
champion of the mentally ill, or some such.
--

As some know, I have a part time job locally doing concerts.

Touring is difficult on certain tours. Start work at 8am, work all day, do a how and then take it down. Get done at 2am. Drive to a city less than six hours away. Do it again.

That's taxing.

BTW, this is a pretty common schedule. Some are slightly better, some are worse.

Now... here's how the performers live:

Get on private plane. Fly to city. Limo to hotel. Hang at hotel for a few hours. Limo to venue at 6m. Hnang at venue for few hours in a dressing room that has everything you want. Perform on stage for two hours. Get into limo. Go to private plane.

If you're doing five shows a week (some do less) a performer is working 10 hours a week.

TEN.

The crew are working 90 hours.

90

>>>Posted by: zombie at August 11, 2017 01:53 PM

Spot-on, zombie.

What I still just can't comprehend is how --- with all their identity politics victim groups regarding women, LGBTs, victims of rape --- Leftists can accept intersectionality between those victim groups and Islam/Muslims?

There must be some sort of hierarchy of acceptability or some such? Consider the following:

1 - A misogynist, anti-LGBT, rapist who is a rich, white guy.
2 - A misogynist, anti-LGBT, rapist who is a Black man.
3 - A misogynist, anti-LGBT, rapist who is a Muslim.

Person 1 is definitely an enemy... maybe.
Person 2 is definitely an enemy... maybe.
Person 3 is never an enemy.

I say maybe for 1 and 2, because the Left will ignore any of that from fellow Leftists (i.e. Bill Clinton, Roman Polanski, Alec Baldwin, etc.).

Is there some kind of liberal playbook that has all the intersectionality and exceptions listed out somewhere?

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 11, 2017 02:24 PM (7A4qQ)

I think you're wrong in this analysis. The point isn't to set up an actual workable hierarchy. The point is to create a framework in which anyone can be accused of doing wrong at any point of time for any reason (cue C. S. Lewis quote about it not being possible to rule lawful people). If your structure is such that anyone can be declared a public enemy whenever they become inconvenient, then you have control over that person.

The reason that the people you mentioned are not chastised is not because they are exceptions to the rule, but simply because it's more useful for the advancement of the overall structure that they not be chastised at this point in time.

Correct. Also unless you have a floating body fat percentage test, they have no fucking idea. When my son was 17 and 4th in the state wrestling, he had a floating body fat test which had him at 8.2%. It's illegal to wrestle under 8% without a doctor's letter. However, because of muscle, his BMI, calculated by the height/weight formula (which never looks at muscle) had him, yes overweight with a BMI of 22%.

455 If your structure is such that anyone can be declared a public enemy whenever they become inconvenient, then you have control over that person.

The reason that the people you mentioned are not chastised is not because they are exceptions to the rule, but simply because it's more useful for the advancement of the overall structure that they not be chastised at this point in time.

>>>Posted by: joe, living dangerously at August 11, 2017 02:29 PM

Okay, I can understand that.

I just still don't get the Left's collaborative acceptance of Islam. Is it really that they feel the protection of Islam "is more useful for the advancement of the overall structure that [it] not be chastised at this point in time"? Which follows that, at some point in time, the Left will finally chastise Islam?

The reason I asked about some sort of hierarchy/exceptions is specifically because of their seeming protection of Islam over all else. The Left's top issues seem to be misogyny, rape and LGBT. Yet, Islam trumps all of those. It honestly completely baffles me how this is so.

If Christians or Jews or Mormons had perpetrated a terrorist attack against a gay nightclub, the chastisement of the 'guilty' religion would have been swift and never-ending.

Is it that the Left's main top, top issue is anti-America/Capitalism/Christianity, and the Left sees Islam as the best enemy to that issue, so it always gets a pass?

Now, I know that runs counter to current fashion wisdom which says women of size shouldn't have to cover ANYTHING up -- and I'm not saying they should all wear potato sacks or burkas either -- but sheesh, there are some (ahem) assets one should not display beyond a certain age or a certain degree of adiposity. I know I personally would not be caught dead in some of the fashions women older and larger than me wear on a daily basis.

Even here in Oklahoma we have enclaves of SJWs. It's good to stay informed of their MO in order to recognize when they're trying to force their lifestyles on everyone else.

We've managed to keep them fairly well sequestered in known areas only because a good portion of the populace has stayed informed of who they are.

Plus there's a lot more religious and spiritual involvement of the population here, and that helps muchly.

I've been running a bunch of 'what-if' scenarios with the pathetic little bombs the Norks ( 40 kt ) have at http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/. The odds of them having the serious telemetry to score a direct hit are slim to none. That takes practice - trial and error. Which might be behind the Guam test.

The most efficient, damaging blast to knock a city down requires an airburst at just the *perfect* altitude. Directly at the exact location. A ground burst just makes a radioactive mess in a relatively small area the size of a couple of Rhode Islands.

Most likely scenario is they blow up a pot growing operation not far from Seattle, Washington. Stoners hardest hit.

493 The Left is a purely destructive movement. If that were not so, radical gays and Muslims would oppose one another as they superficially have different positive goals.

But they share the paramount goal of wanting to destroy the Western tradition and especially its Judeo-Christian foundations. They intersect in their hatred.

>>>Posted by: Margarita DeVille at August 11, 2017 02:36 PM

This is pretty much what I suspected. It's really the only thing that makes logical sense about the Left's alliance with Islam. I guess it's the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" sort of thing.

I still don't know how in the world they get away with it all the time though. Well, actually, now I remember how they get away with it: they just lie about Islam. Muslims oppress women or participate in rape culture or throw gays off buildings... Leftists just retort with "That's not real Islam" and the discussion is over and they don't have to deal with their illogic.

How the hell did this happen? Is the natural state of any culture to eventually destroy itself from within from a large group of self-culture-hating people gaining all positions of influence in all areas of society?

My take is that leftists see history as a line, and they're extrapolating "progress" out into the future. I don't think it occurs to them that when they beat the cultural/political right here in the west by allying with Islam that the resulting power they gave to their new ally will or could ever be used against them in a way that is worse than how they're being "oppressed" by Christians now.

The end justifies the means, and they think that by letting the barbarians in the gates that they'll be left to rule the wreckage. I don't think it occurs to them that they're going to be part of the wreckage.

Look at how the language they use with Trump and his decisions with things like Gorsuch. It's "going backwards" and "and rolling back the clock." When you've been conditioned to think that the past of this country was the Worst Thing Evar! there are a lot of people in the US and western europe today that don't realize how good they have it and how much they really have to lose.

My family and I are excited about the eclipse. I ordered my viewers. My dad made a funny that he'd skip this one and wait on the next one (he almost died this past year, so he's more optimistic about his future now and it shows).

Here's more info:

The Aug. 21 total solar eclipse is a big deal for a good reason - the celestial scene is not something you will see every day.

The last time a total solar eclipse was visible from the contiguous United States was on Feb. 26, 1979, when the path of totality stretched through the northwestern states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, according to NASA.

The last five solar eclipses visible in the U.S. occurred on:

July 11, 1991
Feb. 26, 1979
July 10, 1972
March 7, 1970
July 20, 1963

The Aug. 21 eclipse - dubbed "The Great American Eclipse" - will stretch from Oregon at its start to South Carolina in the east. The states along the path of totality will experience the darkness that comes from the moon passing in front of the sun for a little more than 2-and-a-half minutes; other sites will only experience darkness for a few seconds. The mid-time of the eclipse will be around 10:15 a.m. in Corvallis, Albany and Lebanon, Oregon, ending around 2:45 p.m. in Columbia, South Carolina.

The event is expected to bring millions of sky-watchers to the path of totality.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

If you miss the Aug. 21 eclipse, you will have to wait a while to see another one in the U.S. The next annular solar eclipse that can be seen in the continental United States will be on Oct. 14, 2023, which will be visible from Northern California to Florida. The next solar eclipse will take place April 8, 2024, which will track northeast from Texas to Maine and cross the path of the 2017 eclipse near Carbondale, Illinois.

Since 1503, there have been 15 total solar eclipse paths that have crossed the path of the August 2017 eclipse, NASA noted. Calculations show that it will take about 1000 years for every geographic location in the Lower-48 to be able to view a total solar eclipse.

513 How the hell did this happen? Is the natural state of any culture to eventually destroy itself from within from a large group of self-culture-hating people gaining all positions of influence in all areas of society?

515 I question whether there even is any kind of social impediment stemming from being a big 'ol moo cow.

The image of the highly successful person in a position of power is often that of the proverbial "fat cat". If anything, the health obsessed, skinny jean vegan is an invention of the left.

Throughout most of history largesse has been a symbol of success.

516 Ugh....my co-worker was just fired.

I knew something was up yesterday when my boss told me that I might want to work out of another site today. I immediately thought something wasn't quite right, and I actually suspected this outcome.

It's a shitty situation all the way around. She was in the wrong, but so are those above her.

AND GUESS WHO GETS TO DO MORE FUCKING WORK?????!!!

Pam was HAWT when she was on teh cocaine.

I've always dug Krieger. For some reason the name "Algernop" makes me laugh.

520 "it's more useful for the advancement of the overall structure that they not be chastised at this point in time"

I can picture that situation changing, particularly if single payer health care gets established... next thing you know, it will be illegal for anyone under 21 to buy soda pop or sweets, junk food will be sold only on the black market or in really seedy parts of town (like pot, porn, etc. used to be), and organized crime cartels will start dealing in burgers, fries, pizza, BBQ, etc.

Well, I hope you enjoy it, but why would hospitals need extra rattlesnake venom? Seems to me that the biggest danger is likely to be from people not using the proper eyewear or not being able to get medical care because the roads are clogged. The commentators on Oregon Live were rather cynical. They say the wildfire smoke will probably hurt the viewing

525 I've resigned from my job but I've committed to staying until Tuesday. It's really weird and hard to, umm, you know, care when you'll be done in just a few more days.
It's also hard not to waste time AOSHQing all day.

Oddly enough people seem genuinely sad that I'm leaving.

526 Speaking of fat people Pam is my favorite character on Archer.

Pam is socially fearless, sexually confident, has a sense of humor, and can hold her own in a street fight. And a good wingman.

She's more woman or man than any nitwit who would ever even consider a "fat studies" course.

This is a good point. And your comments about Trump made me think of one of the biggest character flaws of the Left: arrogance / condescension / underestimation. Okay, well, I guess that's more than one flaw.

But, think about the past 2 years of the Presidential election process. Everywhere you turned, from 'celebrities' to media members to Democrats/Hillary, no one took Donald Trump seriously. And... they lost.

The Left does the same with... well, pretty much anyone not a Leftist. They claim to care about the poor and Blacks and illegal aliens and Muslims, but really, they look down upon all these groups of people and see them only as pawns to use for the advancement of the Leftist cause.

But, I think you mentioned something about the Left controlling people / groups. That's probably their other major flaw: thinking they have all these groups they look down on under their control. When, in fact, there is only an alliance of convenience. Especially with Islam. And I think this alliance with all these groups only lasts until the Left gets their 'utopia'.

Ironically, when that happens, the Left will find out that none of these groups are actually under their control at all and the Left can underestimate them at their own peril.

533 I am an Oregon State graduate. Shortly after I graduated, I was on campus for something or other and saw a sign strung between the windows at the top of a dorm.

At the time, the free range people that have always dominated the University of Oregon were rioting over something or other.

The sign at Oregon State read "If we wanted hippies on our campus, we'd have gone to UofO."

That day I was proud to be an Oregon State Beaver alum. Now, not so much and they will never get another dime of my money.

This too. A lot of what goes on in academia can be explained by "jobs program for liberal arts faculty." There's no shortage of hairy little commies with master's degrees in Frankfurt School-poisoned disciplines who need jobs at the public trough.
