Claim: DNC Hack Was Not a Foreign Hack, But Done In-Person By Someone With Access to the System

Via Instapundit, Just One Minute links an article in The Nation claiming a report of intelligence experts says the "hack" wasn't really a remote hack at all, but an internal leak by a DNC official with close physical access to the system.

The Nation isn't at all clear about who it is publishing this report, but it could be a group called Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, who have disputed these claims before. They previously tried to debunk the case for the Iraq War when Bush was President. So they seem left-wing. (RUSSIA!!!)

This seems to be the most easily provable or disprovable -- and most dispositive on the subject -- claim being made:

There was no hack of the Democratic National Committee’s system on July 5 last year—not by the Russians, not by anyone else. Hard science now demonstrates it was a leak—a download executed locally with a memory key or a similarly portable data-storage device. In short, it was an inside job by someone with access to the DNC’s system. This casts serious doubt on the initial “hack,” as alleged, that led to the very consequential publication of a large store of documents on WikiLeaks last summer.

The VIPS group also made this claim on July 24th -- that the speed of the download was not possible over the internet, but could only be accomplished through the computer downloading to a physically-attached external storage device. Their report claimed:

The Key Event

July 5, 2016: In the early evening, Eastern Daylight Time, someone working in the EDT time zone with a computer directly connected to the DNC server or DNC Local Area Network, copied ,1,976 MegaBytes of data in 87 seconds onto an external storage device. That speed is much faster than what is physically possible with a hack.

It thus appears that the purported "hack" of the DNC by Guccifer 2.0 (the self-proclaimed WikiLeaks source) was not a hack by Russia or anyone else, but was rather a copy of DNC data onto an external storage device.

I don't know if that's true -- but it seems easily checkable, and we deserve answers about that.

Given The Nation's long, long history of flacking on behalf of Mother Russia, I am suspicious of their interest in disproving a Russia Hack narrative.

But, as I said, the case seems to be made upon two checkable facts: How much/how fast information was downloaded, and whether such download speeds are capable via remote hacking, or can only be done through a computer's physical ports.

I'd like this either rebutted or admitted by the "intelligence" community.

12 It's difficult to check because DWS refused to turn over the DNC servers to either DHS or the FBI. Both Comey and Jeh Johnson testified before Congress that they requested the servers so they could try and trace the source of the "hack" but she refused.

She also came out a couple weeks ago and claimed that both Johnson and Comey lied and they never asked for the servers.

I've believed for a long time this is what the Imran Awan thing is all about.

55 "1,976 MegaBytes of data in 87 seconds"

Day-ummmm.

That would take either a direct machine-to-machine connection, or a really fast Ethernet connection on a Local Area Network.

The only way to do that "remotely" is if the target machine had a really powerful "trunk connection" (or whatever they're called) like a T-1 line -- which almost no one does outside of big servers.

But, admittedly, I am no expert. Takes me three minutes down to download one tailpipe fetish porn clip!

60 There's a lot of talk in the comment section about high-speed internet being capable of this transfer, but remember that if you're transferring something from one computer to another over the net, that the speed limit will be set by the target computer's maximum upload speed, not the recipient computer's maximum download speed.

In most networks, the latter is considerably faster than the former.

92 Transfer would have been 22 Mega BYTES per second...

Normal internet speeds are calculated in Bits...

8 bits to a Byte... so... would need a consistent 176 Mega BIT connection to reach that speed...

Getting that speed from another country? I don't see it...

Now.... even the backbone of most Networks, work at 100 Megabit per sec.... so even the NETWORK itself would not support that transfer rate...

So.... now... based on the size of the file... it was not a thumb drive...

If this information about speed of transfer is correct... it had to be an external USB backup drive...

On the other hand, no Washington staffers have been murdered in...15 years(Chandra Levy)? And we have a case of one being murdered 6 days after he leaked information that could have lost Hillary the election.

We have no mugger arrested.

I think the most obvious scenario is to look at the very small group of people who had direct access to these servers, not just physical access but administrative access. Just because you can touch the servers doesn't mean you have the request authority to access all the data.

We know Awan had access to both the Congressional networks and thanks to DWS the DNC networks. And we know he is being investigated for stealing data from the Congressional network already.

"The death of a federal prosecutor whose body was found on the beach in Hollywood has been ruled a suicide, Hollywood police said Thursday."

"Beranton J. Whisenant Jr. 38, was found dead by a beachgoer in Hollywood near Magnolia Terrace shortly before 6:30 a.m. on May 24."

It took them three months to come up with suicide. Very strange. Just promoted at work, married, three kids, and a wife who is a doctor.

Other tidbits from other places.

Hollywood, Florida, Whisenant's body was recovered within the parameters of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz's district.

The 37-year-old had just joined the Miami U.S. Attorney's Office in January, and was assigned to investigate cases of visa and passport fraud.

To the claim that it would be impossible to hack that quickly, I disagree. I work with graphics files mostly and some of those files are very large indeed, yet I manage to move those mountains of data around fairly quickly. The technology has come a long way.

Aside from Podesta's chld porn, most of those emails would've consisted almost entirely of text. Seems to me if the hacker compressed the files prior to download, he or she could halve the amount of data and cut download time accordingly. Any number of ways that could be accomplished.

My point is these supposed experts are making definitive claims here. I'm always leery of definitive claims.

200 The primary problem I have with this claim of "local access" to DNC servers is that I have not seen this claim supported by anything other than file timestamp data analysis.

That is, looking at a collection of files, you can see when they were copied, and then you can derive a file transfer speed, which would imply that THAT set of files (COPY1) was copied at that speed.

It says nothing about being connected to DNC server or the DNC local network, because THAT set of files (COPY1) could have been copied over the Internet to a repository (COPY0), and then locally copied, generating all the timestamp data of interest.

This could be based on a misunderstanding or an incomplete understanding of their analysis.

File A had a creation timestamp of x, file B had a timestamp of y, file C has timestamp z, etc. They they figured out the difference of the timestamps and along with the file sizes, they figured the speeds.

But, the timestamps are editable. If a nation, like Russia (or anyone else), wanted to make it look like it couldn't have been done remotely, this is something they might do to throw others off.

It's not even a difficult hack. Freeware tools have been around forever that let you edit the timestamps on files. All's you need to do is calculate the very simple math to figure out what speed you are trying to mimic.

Sorry, that does not pass the smell test. If this was a simple hack it would then be simple to determine who did the hack and this all could have been cleared up months ago.

Exactly, and let's be honest, Trump would not be savvy enough to somehow cut a deal like that anyway.

Considering how many people were being monitored by the Obama Deep State, all they've found were things like improper paperwork being filed by someone who Trump fired almost immediately when it came to light he had some clients who were questionable.

* Hillary Clinton will never go to jail no matter what she does or has done. It's apparently a rule.

In these times of grave national uncertainty, we need to be strong, but at the same time consider that strength in the face of opposition can only lead to conflict, and conflict, as we know, can lead to combat, and to many bad things.

As Americans, instead of forcing change in a foreign country most of us can't find on a map, even sober, we have to let North Korea grow the capacity to institute real change, and we will work WITH Kim Jong Un, to do this, while opposing any aggression. We will stand strong to protect American lives, here and abroad.

When I was growing up, I used to hear my mother say "You Asshole Bill. I HATE you, you FUCKING LIAR." She taught me to stand strong, to be proud of who I am, and to try and ride any connections I had to wealth and security because I could, and I deserved that. That's what I want to say to you today, America. And that's what we need to say to the people of North Korea, and their leader, Mr Un.

280 The math is pretty simple and adds up:
Internet connections are usually measured in Mega"bits" per second.
Converting Mega"bytes" of data size takes a little conversion.
1976 Mega"bytes" of data (email files) transferred in 87 seconds.
1976/87=22.712 Mega"bytes" of data moving every second.

Using an online conversion calculator (www.convert-me.com)
22.71 Mega"bytes" per second would use 181.7 Mega"bits" of your internet connection.

Most home cable users get 25megs down and 5 up speeds. Maybe 50 down and 10 up. It is common for large businesses to have 100 or 200 meg connections.

This data transfer would an "upload" from the server. So the DNC would need to have a very large "upload" pipe.

Even if an organization like the DNC had 200 Megabit synchronous connection (same upload and download speed... it is highly unlikely any one device or data transaction would be allowed to use 90% of all available bandwidth...even for a short time.

Most internal networks have 1 gigabit switches which can transfer data at 1000 megabits per second.
Older systems were 100 megabit until a few years ago.

A 181 megabit data transfer on an internal network would cause no disruption to any other users.

More likely an inside job, if the numbers are correct.

318 RE: 238 But, the timestamps are editable.

You obviously don't know about data forensics. None of the tools that allow you to edit timestamps allow you to edit nanoseconds, but the actual timestamp of an NTFS file stored in binary measures time to a 100 nanosecond precision. So when you look at the actual 8-byte timestamp block of an NTFS file, an altered timestamp will have a block of zeroes where the nanosecond precision should be. It's also possible to determine from a timestamp if it was transferred via a flash drive, as flash drives are usually formatted as FAT, and this will result in a timestamp with a partially truncated nanosecond precision, since FAT timestamps weren't as precise.

349 318 RE: 238 But, the timestamps are editable.

Posted by: pete at August 10, 2017 03:11 PM (WPYlw)

++++

I'll admit that I don't have any expertise in data forensics if you will admit that you don't know what tools the NSA (or its equivalent in Russia) have.

Or are you saying that it would be impossible for the NSA or its like to fabricate this so called evidence? If the NSA was able to remotely hack a network, do you really believe that they don't have the tools and expertise to make it look like the files were copied to a device onsite?

We are talking about a bunch of 1s and 0s. They can be rewritten after the fact. All it takes is the expertise to know what the end product should look like.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at August 10, 2017 03:20 PM (FUu/Z)

350 From the start, it was always my professional opinion that, based if on nothing else Occam's Razor, that this is in fact what happened. That is, the most likely explanation for what happened was that someone with direct access to the machines in question downloaded the emails onto a storage device (thumb drive or the like) and walked out with it.

I'd be curious to know how "they" knew the size of the data file and how long it took to download. But if that is correct, then they are certainly correct that the download did NOT take place across any wide area network, such as the Internet. With a file that big, even using a high speed broadband Internet connection, it would have taken a few minutes to download such a file, not 80-90 seconds.

366 I'm a network guy, I'm seeing some different math in here, so here's mine:
"1,976 MegaBytes of data in 87 seconds"
1,976 MB is equal to:
1,976,000,000 bytes
Multipy by 8 to get into bits:
15,808,000,000 bits
Now divide by 87 seconds:
181,701,149 bps (bits per second)

Or approx: 182 mbps (megabits per second)

That is very fast. Not impossible speeds, but unlikely speeds, given that it would have to have gone overseas to the Kremlin or wherever.

370 Assuming the quantity of data and duration of the transfer are correct, then it would require ~200 Mhz bandwidth, so IN THEORY, it could be done over a 25 MB Internet connection. IN THEORY.

In reality, the transfer speed is going to be determined by a lot of things. I've got a 45 MB pipe from At&T and usually manage 4 MB/sec or so, max. That's determined by load on the source server, internal routings at the source, and routing between source and me. The size of the pipe you buy from your ISP doesn't usually make that much difference.

On the other hand, if I download a movie from Amazon, then store it on a WD Cloud Drive, I see 25 - 30 MB/sec over my home WiFi (5.0 GHz band).

So the story seems rock solid to me.

That is very fast. Not impossible speeds, but unlikely speeds, given that it would have to have gone overseas to the Kremlin or wherever.
Posted by: other joe_mama at August 10, 2017 03:28 PM (C7VXP)

Whole thing would be very easy to prove... with physical access to the network.... and server.

Server, wiring, Switch, Firewall, Router, external wideband link... and the entire path to another country, would have to support more than that speed... with no slowdowns...

Heck, if sent TCP vice UDP, just the handshaking itself would kill the transfer speed...

410 1976MB in 87secs ...

1976/87 = 22.7 MB/sec (round up to 23)

23 MB/s = 184Mbps

My closest big city (Chattanooga) offers 1gigabps service for around $70. My ISP (in Dade Co,GA) also offers 1gigabps but I'm on the poor end at 100Mbps (and I routinely get 90Mbps). 1gigabps would easily handle that much data in 87 sec.

I also wouldn't expect a national political organization to be pinching pennies with their internet connectivity.

That's 1 Gig max download speed, you upload speed would be significantly slower...

AND, your computer, house wiring, switch, router, and firewall... would all have to support those speeds...

Plus, the path to the other country where this supposedly was done from, would have to support that speed, AS WELL AS ALL THEIR EQUIPMENT...

Now, if done as a hack, it was NOT done as a direct attack, it was done through a Proxy server to mask that attack... so THEIR equipment would also have to support those speeds...

All links in the chain of communication would have to support that speed AT A MINIMUM...

Posted by: Don Q..,.. Philosophizer at August 10, 2017 03:57 PM (NgKpN)

413 You can test their claim yourself. Try a simple experiment, time the download speed onto a stick, versus just sending the same data via email

It was inside. Not a hack
And that makes for a whole host of interesting questions

414 1976 MB = 15808 Mb (8 bits in a byte )
15808 Mb / 87 sec = 181.7 Mb/s (commonly written as Mbps)

These rates are high but not unobtainable. However, they are dependent upon the DNC having at least a 200 Mbps ISP connection. That's certainly not crazy talk - many mid-sized organizations have several hundred Mbps connections, and well into Gbps range.

The point about the transoceanic issue is quite valid ... if it applied, but the truth is a hacker wouldn't necessarily steal data to his personal system (in fact, this is a terrible idea as it points the finger right at you). It'd be much better to first compromise a system in Alexandria, especially a system owned by an org that does business with the DNC. Then you transfer the file to the Alexandrian server and then from there to some other location. Preferably with multiple bounces, including some through countries that won't give US authority access to their systems.

TL;DR ... they're flat wrong when they say these speeds are impossible over the Internet UNLESS the DNC was super-cheap with their ISP.

421 392 Was Seth Rich related to Marc Rich?

You're thinking of Rich Little--you know, Little Richard's brother.

There is a connection of sorts.

Marc Rich was selling technology to the Ayatollah (before that became Official Policy). The Clinton/Rodham Gang sold him a pardon. The US Atty. who gave the Clintons a pass--Jim Comey. If you count the non-investigation of the Clinton Foundation, that is the third "pardon'" Comey has given the Clintons.

He was rewarded with the FBI job.

BTW, after Ashcroft recused, Dep. Atty. Gen. Comey sicced Fitzgerald on Scooter Libby for the non-crime of Richard Armitage using Plame's name. The goal was to get Cheney removed.

Rot. From Top to Bottom.

424 Transfer would have been 22 Mega BYTES per second...

Posted by: Don Q..,.. Philosophizer at August 10, 2017 02:20 PM (NgKpN)

Not quite. Most network backbones run at FAR higher speeds than 100 Mbit/sec. That's only Fast Ethernet speed, which is fast becoming obsolete. Your router in your house probably has Gigabit Ethernet ports. Most cellular companies (The one I work for anyway) has a IP backbone with individual circuits that run at 100 Gigabits per second each.

But the main bottleneck is the DNC server's upload speed. I get 300 Mbit/sec download speed from Spectrum easily, but my upload speed is limited to 25MBit/s. If they bought a service that goes higher than that (Which is entirely possible), then it's not unfeasible to get 187Mb/s upload speeds.

Posted by: Cymbaline at August 10, 2017 07:42 PM (f/uEA)

425 Can we look at it from the other angle? Download speed from server to USB drive? Does the rate seem too fast or too slow? Just want to be able to rule that out (or in, I guess... I'm outta coffee so brain sluggish).

Posted by: Fen at August 10, 2017 08:07 PM (65BNR)

426 Mbps = Megabits per second. A bit is one 8th of a byte.

So to convert the quoted speed to your equivalent, divide by 8. If your quoted transfer speed is 80 mbps, that is equivalent to 10 megabytes per second. The speed calculated for these files is about 176 mbps. There are internet services available that fast for which one pays a premium. However multiple users sharing usage would slow it down, so it is only possible if the DNC had paid for a special "fast" connection, and no one else was using it. It is unlikely, I'll say that.

File attributes can be futzed if you know how to do it, but I don't see why these would be futzed in that particular way.

Also, there is a bit of time for opening and closing, and the connection would have to be fast on both ends. FIOS does offer a 300/300 service. In some places a 500/500 is available. I don't know. I think it is possible but very unlikely.

On a Verizon FIOS connection at this time of night as the sole user, I get a pretty consistent 17-19 mbps download rate, and about a 10 mbps upload rate. Needless to say, the theoretical rate is a lot higher. In megabytes per second, that would be 2.4/1.25. So this is not a normal internet connection, if it was one.

There are numerous free speedtest sites on the intertubes for you to try. Just search for "test upload download speed". Remember to divide the result by 8 to get the megabyte equivalent.

427 The problem with Anon Y Mous's protests that a competent person could concoct the time-stamp evidence, even at the nanosecond level, because after all, its all 1s and 0s, is that it presumes a competence and technical awareness nowhere present in anything else the DNC has done in this case.

Its like the old saw has it, when you hear hoofbeats in the night, it could be zebras or horses, but its probably horses.

Posted by: Old Toby at August 11, 2017 07:04 AM (W+I/H)

428 The speed is not proof, but it is a heavy helping of stink.

We're talking about a hack that is so close to the target, it's indistinguishable from a leak.
