Stanford University Researchers Find That Cops Who Are Polite To Black Drivers Are Actually Being Disrespectful...Or Something

Heather MacDonald eviscerates the study in her article in the current "City Journal." Conjuring Disrespect: A much-touted study of Oakland police shows researchers' determination to find racism, not cops' bias. I Like MacDonald, even though she is a bit gung-ho in her defense of policing in America. But her criticisms are right on target.

The attempt to find systemic police bias has come to this: the difference between an officer saying “uh” and saying “that, that’s.” According to Stanford University researchers, police officers in Oakland, California, use one of those verbal tics more often with white drivers and the other more often with black drivers. If you can guess which tic conveys “respect” and which “disrespect,” you may have a career ahead of you in the exploding field of bias psychology.

I'm no fan of the current trend in America, which is to allow the militarization of police, and turn a blind eye to the obvious issues of unbridled use of force and tolerance of aggressive and sometimes illegal behavior. But that doesn't mean that cops are racists...it means that some of them are jerks. And the rest of them -- the ones who tolerate the lawlessness of the few -- are also culpable. But it is pretty clear that the cops in Oakland who were tarred as racist were actually behaving in a rational, controlled and intelligent manner. Tailoring how they speak to people based on the crazy notion that everyone is a bit different seems to me to be the smart way to do it.

But the study's conclusion was no doubt written before the data were analyzed. The authors knew what they were going to find, so really, it was just going through the motions.

I recall a study published last year that discovered some interesting facts: On the most extreme use of force – officer-involved shootings – we find no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account.

But that's based on numbers and objective data that can't really be massaged too much. Feelings are much easier to manipulate, and Stanford's researchers certainly did a bang-up job of that!

38 The police office racial bias variant of the Althouse Rule that any study that finds differences between men and women must be written so as to find that women are superior is that the police are always racist, no matter what.

Look, I'm pretty far down the cops are militarized thugs path but this idea that cops are totes racist all the time is, hmm, what's the technical term, bugfuck nuts.

In any large population, some percentage will be racist assholes because that's how humanity works because people are the worst. Going looking for it like this serves no purpose but to make people unwilling to ignore actual awfulness because something something wolf something.

Do I believe there are cops who are racists? Sure, just like I believe there are cops who think Elvis will be brought back by the aliens at any time now. It's a large population and some percentage of it will believe something bugfuck.

Do I believe all cops are racist all the time? Um. No. No, I do not.

47 Every now and then it is possible to find evidence, in limited settings, in limited quantities, that reflect racist attitudes/behaviors in police departments.

It's usually very obvious when it's found. However, most macro studies bear out that racism just does not seem to be a factor most of the time. It's accepted wisdom at this point however, so there's not much that can be done about that.

Back in 2006, at my college graduation, my stepdad was rear ended by a couple of twenty-somethings. As he was driving a rental cal with a bunch of us in it, we called for a cop. The officer was a smoking redhead. She and I started chatting and flirting, and I was literally seconds from asking for her phone number, when my mom pushes her way into the conversation and starts talking about how her nephew is interested in being a cop, blah blah blah. The officer's face changed immediately and she got very professional and went back to her car. We get back into ours and mom doesn't understand why I'm suddenly pissed, until my aunt blurts out, "Rhonda, you just cockblocked your own son!"

97 I've never had any real trouble with cops, even in 70's in Texas with long hair and a beard, when they were famous for shaving hippies' heads.

Before that, they used to stop me for street-racing and let me go with a lecture and no ticket.

Now I'm old and my last two stops have resulted in warnings only. Maybe respect works better

I don't get the whole problem with cops thing.

127 See also: Ann Coulter's meticulous autopsy of the New Jersey study purporting to conclude that blacks are pulled over more often for traffic offenses in the Garden State.

Executive summary: if you dig down into the fine print, it turns out that blacks ARE pulled over more often, but, blacks also incur the preconditions for a traffic stop far more often.

If you control for the disproportionately high rate at which black motorists break traffic laws or have a visibly illegal condition of their vehicle, it turns out they are less likely to be pulled over in NJ than would be a corresponding white motorist.

n.b., this ridiculous study's flawed conclusions were praised to the high heavens by the Joisey establishment Republicans when it first came. The likes of Christine Todd Whitman and Thomas Kean couldn't self-flagellate and auto-denounce vigorously enough. "We must do better," and similar such rhetoric.

It's very much of a regional and generational thing in my experience. Cops 30+ years ago had a much better rapport with people than they do now.

I come from a family of cops, and I'm always respectful, I'm not stupid enough to start mouthing off to a cop, but I have enough dumb exchanges with them that I can completely understand why groups of people may think racism is playing a role because a small situation has been blown up by them.

161 I got pulled over by the NY State Police on RT17 near Hancock NY for speeding taking my daughter back to school. My Military ID is on top of my license and when the trooper said to me " Commander do you know how fast you were going" I knew I was in like flint. I sheepishly said yes and he just told me to slow it down wished me well. LOL

162 If a policeman says "show me your papers", what does that mean?

My dear departed father once told the story of being pulled over for speeding. The smart alec cop asked to see my father's pilots license. (Flying low, get it?)

So my father handed over his pilot's license leaving the cop with nothing to say. Apparently asking for, and being shown the requested document, and said document being current and in order, the cop had to let him go. That was a long time ago.

My mother exclaimed at one point, "This isn't a country, it's a country CLUB!

WWII memorials are everywhere and there's no doubt about their gratitude. Of course they were occupied for four years and it was kind of rough. One lady who was a child during the War, told me she had one thing to wear near the end.

A potato sack.

172 As a "Late Eighties Longhair", I have been face-down in a puddle because "someone fitting the description" vandalized a construction site.

I was fewer than one-hundred yards from my house, but I respect the "red-and-blues".

There were five people in the car, so the officer had to mollify the situation.

He waited for backup and told me to "get down like an airplane", so I did.

I thought he was a dick, but he only wanted to go home to his Wife and Kids.

It took me years to "get over" that little incident.

When people tell me about being "offended", I want to shit on them. I want to spackle their eyes shut with my own feces. I want to open a wound, defecate in it and close said wound around the previous defecation.

You'd have to call my Beloved Mother a whore and make her cry before my eyes before I decide to be "offended".

At that point, the Collar-Grabbing Rectification is about to begin.

Other than that?

For all the other shortcomings of living in Ohio, the OSHP is notoriously polite and professional. I have never seen a State Trooper lose their cool, or get angry with anyone.
Now watch someone here contradict me.

I have had a few encounters with county Sheriffs that were different, though. A lot of those guys are assholes.

My cousin was a city cop in Dayton for a very long time. He used to tell me about some of the ridiculous things cops have to put up with.
I know several of the cops in my town personally, and some of them are Ok, one is an asshole, and one has the funniest sense of humor you can imagine. One is a distant cousin, which is weird, too.

I make deliberate eye contact with cops during the first spoken words of a traffic stop. If I'm wearing sunglasses I'll have removed them prior to the officer approaching.

They should see, and many such cops want to see, eyes that aren't darty and nervous, nor red, nor with dilated pupils. It's part of their situational assessment.

And I've never had any problems with cops, really. Only one obviously illegit ticket, but the cop was basically a good guy, because he effed up and hinted as much when my protestations and disbelief set him back on his heels.

Once he saw I was normal, and why I made the wide turn (to turn into the gas station) and saw I was sober, we started talking about NCAA basketball, and he was off.

He looked at it carefully and asked if I had forged it. I shook my head adamantly and told him, "No sir!"

He decided it wasn't forged and let me on my way. Gave me a real scare though!

363 As can be seen by my nic, I was a police officer. I've been out for almost 9 years and glad of it. By the time I retired, there was a discernible difference in how the younger cops thought about their jobs (executive summary: I thought most of them were lazy as fvk and had bad attitudes). I tried to teach them that you got better results with kind words and a gun than with a gun alone, but most didn't want to listen to the old-timers.

However, to proclaim that cops are all racist all the time is simply an effort to find a problem where none exists.
