That seems to be Hopper's MO. A lot of his works have this cold loneliness about them. Even the ones that include people. This one is especially stark because of the bright light and colors he uses. Normally bright white, a cloudless blue sky, and a lush green field would signify a positive mood. But here, not. I think it might be the high contrasting highlights and shadows. There's no gradient, just a white side and a black side. It symbolically shows that there's a dark side to everything, even a peaceful field and sunlit sky.

Posted by: mustbequantum at August 10, 2017 09:34 AM (MIKMs)

55 Peaceful and comfortable. Hopper can capture quiet moments even in a big city setting and this is almost idyllic. There even appears to be a breezeway between the house and the light for stormy weather. (Of course, you still have to climb all those stairs.)

I usually associate lighthouses with the east coast, so this is showing the grounds as the sun sets on a quiet day. The blue of the sky against the various shades of green grass and the white structures is calming. The shadows of the swales gives a feel for the time of day. Just a lovely painting.

That reminds me of a joke: an old farmer from high up in the mountains comes to town one morning and walks into the local doctor's office. With him is a young man with a cane, moaning in pain as blood soaks his jeans.

"What happened?" the doctor asks.

"This here's mah son-in-law," the farmer answers. "I shot him in the leg. Can you fix him up?"

"Of course I can,"
the doctor responds, "but why did you shoot your own son-in-law?"

"Wall, to be fair, doc,"
said the farmer, "he warn't mah son-in-law when I shot him."

Oh and the 'United we Stand' flyer, announcing their rally in NYC in front of the NFL building for Colin, spelled Kaepernick's name as 'Kapernick'.

180 Indiana Gillespie swept the space in front of her with an arm, banishing the cobwebs obscuring her vision and progress while she shined a thousand lumen flashlight into the Stygian darkness. Her footsteps were muffled by the thick layer of dust on the floor that threatened to make her sneeze when it was disturbed.

The dust carried a scent that invaded her brain with hints of despair and sadness. Along with something else. That is when the probing beam of her flashlight finally alighted upon something.

"Just as I thought." She walks closer to verify and sighs sadly.

Scattered about are the sure signs that an MJ tribe has already been here and bogarted the treasure to feed their cravings. The empty and crinkled bags of Cheetos vie with the dessicated pizza bones that showed this tribe preferred not to eat the edges of the pizza for prominence. With a foot she sweeps away the detritus to reveal a sign hiding in the dust. In neat red letters undimmed with age she whispers what is written, "Restricted Area, Fort Knox."

He is. He's extremely bright, polite, and well-spoke. Even speaks perfect English (for Jim Acosta's information). He comes from what I presume is a middle class family, said his mother couldn't bear to say goodbye to him. He's never been away from his family before, so I'm being kind of a momma bear to him. He's already asked if he can go to church with us.

Last night I made dinner for my family, him, and our other student from three years ago who is continuing his education here. My son and the other student asked him what the currency of Zimbabwe is, and were shocked when he told them they have none. The government is just printing money. Obama would be right at home there.

Hopper was painting during the Interwar Period and scholars think he's depicting the sadness of WWI and the Depression. That was also a period of stripped-down art in Europe--geometric shape and basic color--which Hopper may be adapting into his style. A good number of Americans tried this mixed style, such as Charles Demuth. tinyurl.com/ork2p4b

That also became true of the late Modernist movements in general, even in Europe. As individual artists experiments, their vocabulary became individualized too. Movements became less about similar style as about similar themes, the Regionalists or the New Objectivity. Some artists were even so different that they became grouped together base solely on era, such as the Post-Impressionists. Contemporary art is even harder to categorize. Some scholars say there are no movements now.
