North Korea Threatens to Fire Nuclear-Capable Missile at Guam
Well, it did not take them long to defy Trump's threat that they had better not make any further threats.
This would be a threat.North Korea says its seriously considering a plan to fire nuclear-capable missiles at Guam, according to state-run media. A spokesman for North Korea's military told KCNA that it would carry out a pre-emptive operation if there were signs of US provocation.
Time to start sinking North Korean ships. All nine of them. By the way, the public now expresses majority support for military action against North Korea.

Pyongyang has apparently been trying to take that next engineering step for a while. Simple in theory ("technically sweet" in Oppenheimer's words). Difficult to reduce to practice.
If they have gotten to a working thermonuclear design, that's not good in and of itself. But it's also not good because the Norks are proliferators for pay. And they'll be busily providing stuff like hydrocodes and fabrication methods to other regimes with whom they cooperate on weapons development.

The NORK army charging through the DMZ might be a rough for the local US and SK forces, but probably isn't a big deal. The general belief is that the NORK army is so starved for resources, and so behind on technology, that it wouldn't be a serious challenge for the local troops to deal with. There'd be no threat of getting pushed back to Pusan again. The vulnerability of Seoul is the real problem.

.Why not? We have a history of doing just that in this Country. I have a bunch of audios from Congress during the War appropriations hearings from late in 1941. Up until 0800 December 7 more than half of the Country was for complete isolationism and were all over Roosevelt and his stealth attempts to get this Country involved in the War in Europe.

I was at an American Air Base in Korea from Jan 90-Jul 91. At that time we had B-61's and exercised with them often. While there, my sister squadron had the chemical commitment but Bush 41 decided that any attack on us with chemicals was the same as a nuclear attack and we would respond with them. Not long after I left the peninsula, he also pulled the nukes. Theoretically they are on a carrier that is offshore most of the time. Since we neither confirm or deny, who knows if they are still on carriers. I know they were no longer at the air base because when I went back in Nov 94, the security posture was just different enough to be able to discern and understand why. I have been gone from there since 1999 so cannot say with good authority if they ever came back but I seriously doubt it. I keep tabs on the two air bases well enough to know if they were ever brought back, I think.
I'd bet we have more than a few on Guam though since it is set up for B-52's. I think Little Kim better back off before Trump gets too angry and decides to do something about it. I don't think he realizes that we did not elect a politician.

Having said that, though, it doesn't take away the threat that is North Korea. Even if they can't deliver a nuke to the US now, they will eventually get there. I want to see the Kim regime removed from power and the missiles gone. China can install a puppet regime without unification and no US ground troops.

I doubt it, actually.
1.) North Koreans tend to be horribly malnourished. Apparently it's not hard to spot someone who was born in the North. So they'd have problems blending in with the Southern population.
2.) While Japan does have a large Korean population, it's still only a notable minority in the country. A group of under-sized Koreans would probably be noted by the Japanese fairly quickly.
Also, you're not going to get any chances to practice with weapons in Japan, which has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the world (pretty much registered hunting rifles *only*, and the cops can come into your house to inspect your rifles annually).
3.) US? Maybe. We're cosmopolitan and diverse enough that some under-sized Asians wouldn't cause as big of a stir.

When I went to first grade we literally had guys with CD helmets up on the school roof looking through binoculars for Soviet Planes. How the heck they were supposed to fly all the way to Akron Ohio without being spotted before then was somewhat of a mystery to me, but the guys were there and took their job seriously.

There's also a shit load of tunnels under the DMZ. The Norks have plans, when the balloon goes up, to send troops through those tunnels. The mission is to come out and kill as many people as possible.

They do - mostly. I could be wrong, but I don't think they get as well fed as, say, your typical US soldier.

It warned of an acute threat posed by North Korea's weapons programs as Pyongyang's continues a series of missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions.
Japan released its annual Defence White Paper after North Korea fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) last month on lofted trajectories to land off Japan's west coast.

I've read the Pentagon's war gaming the Nork scenario also end up going nuclear. That is, we have to use nukes in order to put a stop to it, and it goes nuclear fairly quickly.

An Aegis surface platform with appropriate updates is perfectly well capable of sitting well away from Nork naval threats, and potshotting at Pyongyang's boosters.
The problem is: can such intercepts be done to a high enough degree of reliability that we are willing to bet a city and its inhabitants' lives on it? Because while that capability has been tested, it hasn't been extensively tested under high realism conditions.

That said, more GIs died there than any other campaign. And if you also include the Hurtgen Forest which preceded this by a few weeks, the fall and winter of '44 and '45 was hell on earth for the US Army.

Levin had a fellow on the other day who was, if memory serves, in musical circles in Portland OR, so he's around some serious moonbattery from the people he works with.
This guy said that the prevailing opinion among those he talks to is, well, if an American city gets nuked, that's too bad, it's just the breaks. Explicitly likening it to the Barack Obama policy position on terrorism that the nation can "absorb" a certain level of terrorist attacks without coming apart at the seams.
They're casually proposing to "absorb" a city's incineration.

Thing is, they used that same road network to blow a hole in the French lines in 1940. Hitler thought he could do the same thing in 1944.
The difference, though, is that the Anglo-American forces actually bothered to put enough troops in place to stop anyone reckless enough to try it, whereas the French in 1940 left only a very light screen in place that was under orders to fall back (and then be ignored) if they came under attack.

One nuke scenario is the Norks puts one of the nuke devices on an ox cart in one of those tunnels, a tunnel they've dug that goes the farthest South. Perhaps as close as they can get to US troops.
Boom.
Their response to anything we do is going to be to unleash artillery hell on Seoul, Banzai charge across the DMZ and out of the tunnels. Again, kill as many SKs and US troops as possible in the shortest time they can.
Any "preemptive strike" plans have to deal with the this shit. And it doesn't look good.
Basically, I think the only good preemptive strike option is itself nuclear. Tactial nuking the fuck out of the artillery locations and troops on the DMZ. Big ass strategic nukes everywhere else.
And that ain't something I'd be exactly itching to pull the trigger on.

Ironically, the French Army was larger and better equipped than the Wehrmacht. They had better tanks but fought them in "penny-packets" whereas the Germans under Guderian massed their formations and knew how to maneuver. Plus the French commanders were miles away behind the lines and not right at the front to command.

I do know there are tons of people in DC that want Trump to fail and yes some of them would think a war with NK would be enough to get him thrown out of office and they would encourage that.

The S35 and Char 2b were solid tanks. But the rest sucked. The S35 was probably the only tank in the entire French army that was good in tank vs tank combat, and it was still highly limited by its one-man turret (which put too much of a strain on the tank commander). Plus there were only enough of them to equip one and a half divisions (the S35 was used in three divisions, with H35/H39 tanks making up the other division and a half's worth of tanks).
The Char 2b was heavy enough to be all but invulnerable to German tanks, but extremely slow and mechanically unreliable. The Matilda was similar. The Germans should have taken this as a wake-up call, but didn't. And then they got a rather nasty shock when they ran into the T-34 for the first time (which was faster than their tanks, better armed than their tanks, and almost invulnerable to anything in use aside from an 8

French doctrine was largely built around the idea that tanks would be operating in support of infantry. That obviously wasn't the way things worked out, but very few French officers realized that until it was too late (DeGaulle was one of the ones who did, incidentally).

Those tunnels are very deep and in solid granite. About 9'x 9'. Don't think that would have the desired effect. Have a piece of granite from one of them that we found on a bookshelf. Back in the low tech days we would use some geophysics to get approximate locations then core drill and drop sensors in to detect the blasting to get a more accurate location.
