You might want to make sure 'Emergency Alerts' is enabled on your smartphone.

I'll never forget during the Cuban Missile Crisis my Dad was in local civil defense and told me the warning siren for war was the same as for calling firemen -- but three minutes long -- not one minute which was standard alert for fire.

Some knuckle head tested the three minute alarm and I totally shit myself after the second minute went by.

On February 3, 1959, Richardson ( the Big Bopper) died in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa, along with music stars Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and pilot Roger Peterson. The accident was famously referred to as "The Day the Music Died" in Don McLean's 1971 song "American Pie"

I figure there's about a 90 percent chance that Kim's nukes are duds. The Norks aren't famous for quality control. Plus nobody knows how good their missiles are. It would be pretty funny if they fired off a nuke, it fell into the sea, and the USN or the JSDFN recovered it and displayed it.

The media is like Marco Rubio when he was stuck in the debate glitch, just repeating rehearsed lines.

One pundit says "The problem the President has is his approval rating. Polls show...."

Really? The Norks are going to test fire on Guam and the problem is DJTs approval polls? Not thousands of nuked citizens. Not national security. Not nuclear proliferation.
No, the problem is approval ratings.

A part of me thinks when the nukes are in the air, a reporter somewhere will be huddled up with their house cat awaiting death mumbling "This is gonna hurt Trump's reelection chances."

When do these people wake up and taste reality?

Kinkade gets no love in the art community, or at least in my experience, for this reason. His work is formulaic and "cute", but not a lot of substance. He's not "down with the struggle", either. Oh, and he had no problem giving the public what it wanted so he could make money on his work. Very similar arguments to Rockwell, actually. But where I mostly agree about Kinkade, I do not about Rockwell.

86 I usually enjoy Kinkaid's paintings and this is no exception. They are at worst pleasant to look at. His use of earth tones contrasting with points of brighter, or lighter, colors is effective. I regard them as a form of Romanticism, even fantasy. This one is more dynamic than most and evokes the delicious, serene feeling of protection and comfort in the face of nature's fury. The gentle golden light in the windows versus the cold colors and motion of the elements is very speaks to that. It would have been interesting if he had done some paintings of the Shire and Hobbiton.

I've heard that Kinkade was an SOB in real life. (No details.) Whatever. His scenes are lovely.

88 Stages of Kim acceptance:

Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance.

We're finally past denial, Anger doesn't do any good (never really does) and we're into Bargaining. "Oh if some way could be found to just take him out...."

Next stage - nope, no such way exists. Too bad. Depression.

Things will happen when we get to acceptance - acceptance of the fact that removing Kim is going to require total deaths in the 20 million to 25 million range, a lot of American troop casualties, and a lot of bad consequences for as long as our children are alive. (most of the population of Seoul and most of the population of NK will be lost)

There's no way around that, but we still aren't quite ready to admit that to ourselves. We pretty much need Kim to launch something at Guam to get us over the line. And that's why he has power, because he perversely knows that he can stand there, right on the line of what we will put up with, and taunt us endlessly.

@155

The game plan, since the left has effective control, requires a crisis so they can purge the traitors. Like whatshisman in Turkey, Erdogan did; fake coup attempt and then a purge. Like Maduro is doing in Venezuela, fake coup, and purge.

If they can provoke Trump into doing something beyond what most people will accept, war with North Korea and China would work, then they have a reason to impeach, and then the purge begins.

It's a game plan as old as Marx. Probably goes back to the Romans.

About a year ago, my local gallery exhibited a video art presentation about Pharos. The artist filmed her dive among its ruins and looped it in a dark room. Projected on the adjacent wall were slides of various descriptions of Pharos from the Past. The over a speaker you could here her scuba gear and other underwater sounds. It was very gripping. The idea was to link Past and Present, and to discuss the passage of time and what it does to memory--personal, cultural and historical. There were other themes too but I don't remember them. I was more interested in the history.

184 On Drudge, FBI did a predawn raid on Paul Manafort's house the day after he testified before Congress.

The search warrant was wide-ranging and FBI agents working with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III departed the home with various records.

The raid came as Manafort has been voluntarily producing documents to congressional committees investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. The search warrant indicates investigators may have argued to a federal judge they had reason to believe Manafort could not be trusted to turn over all records in response to a grand jury subpoena.

It could also have been intended to send a message to President Trump's former campaign chairman that he should not expect gentle treatment or legal courtesies from Mueller's team.

So - aside from the fact this is from WaPo and could be anywhere from completely false to completely true - I think anyone who thinks the Mueller thing was set up as a stalking horse to exonerate Trump....

A male member of my writing group, who is old enough to know better than to be a BernieBro, stated the other evening that "Trump is demented, and a fool."

I pointed out, reasonably, that Trump could hardly be a fool. "After all, unlike many trust-fund babies, he took his inheritance and made it bigger. Even before becoming President, he was one of the most successful people in the world.

"As for demented," I went on, "clearly he's in touch with reality-reality (not the warped version of it in DC, which he's going to have to learn about). He dealt with the reality of 16 competitors for the R nomination and trounced them all; he trounced the media's favorite, Cankles, quite handily; and he's continuing to handle the media the same way. Hardly demented."

My buddy changed the subject.

250 USA Today (McNews) has an opinion piece about the Google Memo. They manage to defend the firing and claim it is not unusual, even normal, for companies to fire people with unpopular opinions. OK, lets see somebody fired for openly supporting communism and see what happens. They also manage to claim the central theme of the memo writer was " Your erroneous opinions are making my work environment hostile" WTF. He was the one that got fired and now will have a slew of SJW's (who actually missed a day of work with that BS excuse) trying to destroy his career.

mixed football allegiances. Pastor would hold Bears fans under just a
little longer, to get all the sin off 'em.

Someone at my sister's parish must have a sense of humor. They have a large baptismal font (kind of a bathtub-sized thing) for adult baptisms. On the wall right above this is a large icon of Jonah and the whale. Kind of makes me wonder about what's in that font...

"The IC [intelligence community]"
