Shock: #FakeNews CNN Misrepresents Claims in Google Diversity Memo

We have all three kinds of viewpoints -- the social, the justice, and the warring.

CNN.com's write-up likewise claimed that the author of the "anti-diversity manifesto" argued "women aren't suited for tech jobs for ‘biological' reasons."

The same narrative emerged in CNN's on-air reporting. Host Poppy Harlow complained that the "anti-diversity" memo said "women are less suited for tech jobs than men. Why? Because they're women! Biologically, they can't do it."

But the actual memo simply does not say what CNN claims it does. To begin with, the author of the Google memo is not opposed to "diversity" in the abstract, but is opposed to Google's methods for advancing it.

"I hope it's clear that I'm not saying that diversity is bad," the author says at one point. Elsewhere he notes, "I strongly believe in gender and racial diversity, and I think we should strive for more."

Instead, the author's complaint is that Google "has created several discriminatory practices" in its quest for diversity, including affirmative action programs and services available only to women. In one lengthy section, the author lays out alternative ways to increase women's representation in the company without resorting to "discrimination."

If you want to read the document, rather than hear CNN mischaracterize it, it's available in full here.

This guy on twitter -- an evolutionary biologist, he says -- says that he avoids discussing these sorts of issues because he knows damn well people will try to get you fired for speaking truths that #trigger.

48 Look, let's say you own a bar. And only men come to your bar. Why are there no women you wonder?

Well, you could have a misogynistic bouncer at the door, or misogynistic patrons.

But...there could be other reasons. Women don't like the décor, drinks served, or the music.
Or less women like to hang out in bars than men.

When it comes to Google, they are stuck on the idea that there is a bouncer at the door scaring off the ladies, or that the patrons don't like women. Both concepts are...insane. Literally...unimaginable in this day and age.

More likely, the women don't like the décor (the pressure, the need to perform, nights and weekends, etc.) and there are simply fewer women drinking (fewer female coders).

So stop harassing your patrons on the need to be nice to the ladies, and start making a career in coding more attractive to women. That is all the memo is saying.

77 The alarming thing is that it's not just Google succumbing to the bien-pensant cultural madness.

Mark Zuckerberg ordered scribble walls to be put up at Facebook's new HQ for people to write down their Deep Meaningful Profound Mindthoughts about the future of the company, for everyone to see and collectively ponder.

Zuck himself wrote "Black Lives Matter" on the lobby wall.

Someone else later anonymously came along and wrote "All Lives Matter" near Zuckerberg's note. In response to that, Zuck immediately called a mandatory all-hands-on-deck company meeting of everyone on that site, and said that if he ever found out who'd written that, they'd be fired forthwith.

Consider that Zuckerberg is visibly wanting to run for President in 2020. He's hiring pollsters and visiting Iowa.

118 The stupid thing is that nobody will get away with slagging them for only paying lip-service to what they claim is one of their "core values".

You want "Diversity" coders? Well, since the vast majority of people from the "But there's no coders!!!" classes (let's just say women and blacks) CAN'T CODE.

These companies would have to train people who claim to be interested from scratch. And there's no way in HELL they're going to make the kind of financial and time investment in somebody to teach someone who's never written a line of code in their life how to write functional programs.

Especially since a lot of them either A) aren't ever going to "get" it, or B) are going to get bored with it and bail.

They can talk about "commitment to diversity" all they want, but it doesn't make any financial sense at all to follow through.

Japan is a fascinating example....

After America forced Japan to open its markets it sent people to all the major first world countries to learn what they were doing better then Japan.

They took that feedback and largely adopted it...and became a first world country in a couple of generations.

Essentially they embraced a diversity of opinions grounded strictly in how successful those opinions were in practice. And they did something that almost no other group has been able to do, turning a country stuck in the middle ages into one on par with Europe in a couple of generations.

He pioneered the concept of continuous quality improvement at the worker level. QC can only do so much, catch so much. It has to be built in.

A good example would be the Lunar Module ascent engine during Apollo. Due to the corrosive nature of the chemicals used in the engine - it could never be tested. It simply had to work the first, and only, time it would ever be used. On the Moon. If it did not work, the Astronauts were stuck. Forever.

---------------------

They did the same thing in military technology toward the end of the Sengoku era. Their tactics and techniques regarding musketry were as good as anything that the Europeans were doing at the time, and a lot of it was actually developed locally on the islands.

And then the Tokugawa Shogunate took over and banned foreigners and their influences as a way of solidifying the hold on power. On the one hand, I can't really blame Tokugawa for doing that (the country had just come out of a couple hundred years of civil war, and he'd just seized power from the Toyotomi government). On the other hand, it probably hurt Japan's development a lot in the long run.

Powerful interview tests, such as Google employs, pretty quickly separate the computer science coasters from the real seers. They hire seers, not degrees. Sure, degrees open the doors, and give people a chance to bullshit longer, but solving some NSA puzzles will land you in the big-time much faster than 4-6 years of boring bullshit and drones talking.

Their argument was if you let people work on whatever you want they will produce all sorts of awesome stuff .

I pointed out that *they* might go ahead and write software even if they didn't have to but they weren't going to do it for 40-60 hours per week as they normally do...they were going to get drunk and play video games with all the extra time...which is what they mostly do with their current free time.

They sort of agreed with that, but then argued most other people would actually go out and do great stuff if no one was making them have to work..

Someone made the gratuitous assertion that of course it's always best if we have participants from all cultural and lifestyle groups because otherwise creative outside the box thinking would be impossible.

When I later asked if that meant straight white males could not think outside "their" box, whatever that is defined to be, the room got quiet and uncomfortable.
It became clear that was something that was NOT to be discussed.

351 So, Wu "May Contain Nuts" too?

A cow is a biological machine invented by humans to turn grass into steak.

That would be a steer, dummy*. Steers were actually "invented" by humans, and are manufactured by them to this day. Cows, when they shuffle off this mortal coil, tend to become hamburger.

*meaning NDT, of course!

353 What did Wu do when he found out Brianna was a guy?

Posted by: rickb223 at August 08, 2017 04:16 PM (U76Nz)

I think he learned that going in.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 08, 2017 04:37 PM (uBoz0)

354 Kinda like "May Contain Nuts" warnings?

Posted by: IP at August 08, 2017 04:22 PM (UmSfZ)

Found printed on Brianna Wu's panties?

355 A real journalist would quote the Damore letter, not "characterize" it.

Also today, Tapper got his #FakePanties in a wad over 'Trump TV' (Note to CNN--What I'm about to do is called "quoting"):

"Empirically, there's nothing journalistic about a political organization that exists to support a politician cheering on that politician. It's not real, and it's not news, and it's definitely not real news."

And empiically, there is nothing journalistic about a political organization like CNN which exists to support Democrat politicians cheering on those politicians. It's not real either. It's not news either but it is what CNN does 24/7.

We know Trump TV is his opinion.

And CNN is Hillary's.

356 You people think facts matter? Did you learn nothing from me?

357 From the link on custom phone ROMs without Google:

"The least invasive option is to root your phone, which will let you delete software you can't otherwise remove. The second is to replace your phone's default operating system with a custom ROM like CyanogenMod."

CyanogenMod is no more. Fell prey to infighting.

LineageOS continues the previous code base.

358 I'm sure some VP of Diversity check a box on some document when someone named "Poppy" was hired.....

359 Echoing some other sentiments, but thee is a way you can hurt Google - stop using their products. No email, no maps, no search, no browser. When you uninstall the Chrome browser, it asks you for feedback. Tell them.

Use Opera, Mapquest, Bing... They won't learn, of course, but you CAN hurt their pocket book...

360 And this story isn't over by a long shot. I expect him to sue Google for discrimination and wrongful termination AND potentially sue CNN and other media outlets for defamation.I can even see him crowdsourcing the litigation.

We live in interesting times.

361 That Twitter thread is alternately enlightening, depressing and maddening.

362 Can I ask an honest question?

If men and women are the same, what is the point of diversity? having both would generate zero diversity, since men and woman are the same.

If Google is misogynistic, and not hiring qualified women when they apply, why isn't there some company out there scooping up all these highly talented women and making a killing in the marketplace? Seems to me like some easy money...

363 All they had to do was hire Carley Fiorina and let the magic happen.
