Nineteen Republican lawmakers are trying to eliminate subsidies that help poor people purchase cell phone service and broadband. The legislation filed on Friday targets Lifeline, which is a Universal Service Fund program paid for by surcharges on phone bills. If the bill passes, low-income Americans would no longer be able to use $9.25 monthly subsidies toward cellular phone service or mobile broadband. There is already a program to get internet into rural areas. I can't remember what it's called but it is used to put in fiber for the backhauls. Benefits don't go to the user but makes faster internet possible in the boonies.

Eh, I used to feel this way too, until I started working with the homeless. Where are they going to put landlines? And they really do need phones--they need to be reachable for when their housing applications come through, by their doctors, by family members. A lot of them really are trying to help themselves and without phones it's pretty much impossible.

You should try stepping into a tobacco barn where tobacco is being flue-cured. It's...overwhelming. One of my uncle's old barns is still standing, and every time I'm in the area, I stop in at the barn and walk in for a whiff. It's probably been 40 years or more since it was used, but the fragrance remains. Heady.

I don't know that I'd blame Kyl; whatever Bolton did, she was a Clinton nominee, right? A conservative senator might be willing to pur forward/endorse a number of folks he would not choose if the other side was not occupying the white house.
To draw a parallel, Scalia was openly enthusiastic about the possibility of Kagan being nominated. Not because he thought non-originalists belong on the Court, but because Kagan is at least smart and capable. The Court could do worse; say, for example, low-wattage Sotomayor.

First, from Jessica this morning:
"Joyce's ankles are no longer swollen, they look great. Hallelujah! Now off to the races!"
They then headed out to the park for some fun and games, with Joyce's favorite (new) sport: wall-ball.
Joyce has this big, bright green plastic ball (maybe 2" feet or so in diameter), which she placed in her wheelchair and then walked herself over to the side of the building, and commenced dribbling the ball, and then tossing it against the wall and catching on the rebound. Really amazing for someone that couldn't hold a fork to feed herself 6 months ago.

On the other hand, and to keep it real, Jessica confided that Joyce doesn't always know her (Jess's) name.

I cropped a fair amount of tobacco in my youth, but the smell of a cured barn full of it isn't exactly something I would seek out just for a whiff... XD
Although, I'm not sure the curing method, it may not have been flue-cured. It was a small metal "barn" (more like a trailer) and not a full-sized wooden one. That could change the smell.

I've heard that raw cow hides also have an odor that lingers.
Lamp black - Carbon - is another cargo that gets on everything. The trailer has to be steam cleaned. It doesn't have an odor, just a fine oily powder that gets on everything, and tracks everywhere.

I would have no problem with giving the "poor" some cheap flip phones enabled only to call 9-1-1, or to apply for a job. (to do the latter, you would dial J-O-B, and once connected, then dial the number of the prospective employer; all calls being monitored, and violators do jail time)

Technically that statement is correct, because the actual number in the U.S. these days is 98, which does fall between 90 and 110.

Naturally I thought it would be interesting to see what Oregon's black population's average IQ was because it's fun to watch the usual suspects make pretzels when you get an opportunity to point out things like this, but the data isn't easily found. I only saw that blacks, on average, are in the low to mid eighties.

That's where it got amusing. They apparently have been testing at an entire standard deviation below other populations for decades. The fun part? Go to Wikipedia and look at the "race and intelligence" page. Scroll down to "united states test scores" and read how it is presented.

I have gotten a whiff or two of phosgene, from getting chlorinated solvents too hot, and there is no "smell of new-mown grass". It's just a nasty burning sensation. Which is a good thing, I guess, in that one instinctively recoils from the source.

That '(band)' did/do some real nice stuff. I think them eclectic and more studio than live, so, I think they tended toward, smaller venues. That's how the arena groups, reaped. They brung it live, wish I'd been somewhere to see someone
do the drum pardon off of Steve Gadd on Aja, if not Steve, himself.

Now, today a HS diploma obviously does not indicate much in terms of intelligence nor mastery of knowledge. But it DOES indicate a degree of persistence and emotional stability that the average drop-out of any IQ doesn't have.
And when you consider that the simplest academic tasks would be quite hard for these dummies, getting that diploma shows they can handle frustration. IMO.
I agree with MH that, if their names were Jamal and Shaniqua, no one would have taken the kids away ---not even if it were just Shaniqua, a HS drop-out with a string of live-in boyfriends.

I have a friend on anti-depressants, and they have decided they don't like being on meds anymore, so they are doing a controlled weaning off of the medications. It is going to be weeks before they are "normal." And...it's going to be rough in the meantime.
I want friend to be happy and healthy, so I am going to be as supportive as I can, but I can't help but feel a little like a Mother Hen and worry about it.
Anyone ever go through this before, either yourself or a loved one?

I saw a signature on another site of an Obama quote where he was speechifying about the awesome increase in the high school graduation rate thanks to his administration, and it was directly above a quote from the dot gov educational assessment that same year. It said, roughly, that high school kids have been constantly doing worse and worse academically since the 90s.
Pretty amusing to have them juxtaposed like that.

Yeah, the only comparable experience I have is another friend of mine who is an absolute nightmare when she is off her meds. She has tried going off them a number of times, and like I said, it's really really rough. And when she gets back on them, it's SO much better.
I am under the understanding it will get worse before it will get better, and first friend will be monitored for safety reasons. I am just terrified of self-harm or overdosing or something else that could turn out awful.

I never knew "Stay strong" was a marketed phrase. I think people hear it, perhaps without even thinking about it, and it sounds like something encouraging to say, without knowing how it entered or propagated through the lexicon.

My son and I built a great little model kit of a wooden catapult last week, and then, after we played with it for two days, I made him measure all the parts. We went and bought wood and scaled it up 5x, and I'm hoping we can do it one more time before summer ends.
Superballs to tennis balls to watermelons, hopefully. I'll admit that he's probably not going to be allowed near the big one except to help build.

That was my immediate first question as well actually. I don't actually know much, other than a physician has prescribed lower and lower doses until they're done, and will be monitoring friend periodically for reasons of health/safety.
Now, I don't believe a psychological evaluation has been done, nor do I think they've been cleared by a behavioral specialist or anything. I think a doctor is assisting with my friend going off their meds, but I don't know that said doctor is actually recommending or suggesting that happen either.

Back in '70 or '71, there was a solar eclipse visible in Norfolk. I remember the hysterical stories with headlines like "You'll go blind of you directly look at it. Here's how to 'watch' the event safely." Then they explain how to make a shadow box for viewing.
I will say, one of the neatest things about that eclipse was, as the sun peeked back out from behind the moon, seeing the shadows of the mountains on the moon scroll across the ground, until it became too bright to see them.

It's a bit personal, but do you know if they are on the anti-depressants for a chemical imbalance or for other reasons? If they were needed for a...for a lack of a better way to put it, but a rough period in their life, it would make more sense to be weaned off of them.
I'm not sure if that is how it would work with an imbalance corrected by medicine.
But it's good that this is under doctor's direction, I think.

Think of it as coming off a month long two quart daily coffee binge for example. At a minimum you would be cranky, tired and have headaches.
Weaning is the best way to do it because otherwise the patient can get really jerked around by the brain, and it is both important to follow the wean schedule and have some support . . . as well as some commitment to follow through and not be a prick to everyone.
Because sometimes when your brain chemistry hits the end of its leash, one of the ways it shows is by unleashing the inner - total prick. So tolerant support can help too.

the problem is that the symptoms folks are taking them for usually come right back.
worse, is when folks taper part way off, then old patterns take charge again, and they stop cold turkey, part way through the taper.
don't be surprised if your friend has to go right back on them. also, they need to be monitored quite closely during the taper, and afterward.

I owned one for 'bout a decade, and it was a superb gun at a reasonable price.
Every visible detail about that shotgun is absolutely identical to the one I'd owned, including the slightly proud wood to metal fit around the tang, the exact shape and function of the safety and barrel selector, the ejectors, trigger and guard, engraving and checkering.

"Nurturing" makes it passive. People of intelligence WANT to learn. To read, to do other stuff. If someone needs to be "nurtured" in this respect, he's by definition of modest intelligence.

But what's the metric for reloaders? I actually have a spreadsheet somewhere wherein I could input my quantities of primers and powder and it would generate number of rounds I could assemble (using my reference load in each case).
By that measure, I'm perhaps not in "stores" territory, but close.

My assumption would be if I planned to try to actually hit anything consistently, then that second mount point for the scope would be necessary. Even with the quite modest impulse of the 22 long in a rifle, things invariably shift around a bit during ordinary handling.
It should be a toddle for any good gunsmith.

I am inclined to agree. And certainly if two separate ring saddles are mounted, there would need to be two holes. I can jig it up in my drill press and drill the hole. Drilling right through to the bore would be bad juju, I expect.

Prices. Their pricing is very good, a cornerstone of their whole formula. Certain items (nuts, some cheeses come immediately to mind) are so much less expensive there - and the quality the same or equal to most other places - that's it's kind of weird. Haven't bought nuts anywhere else in decades.

That said, one isolated screw, with no adjacent dovetail or lug upon which to distribute the .22s modest, but not entirely absent recoil, would not to me, be enough.

I have a friend on anti-depressants, and they have decided they don't like being on meds anymore, so they are doing a controlled weaning off of the medications. It is going to be weeks before they are "normal." And...it's going to be rough in the meantime.
I want friend to be happy and healthy, so I am going to be as supportive as I can, but I can't help but feel a little like a Mother Hen and worry about it.
Anyone ever go through this before, either yourself or a loved one?

I wish your friend the best. He or she is fortunate to have you around. A person will do what he deems necessary. I have been on antidepressants for about 20 years, and gone off of them a few times. I have decided not to go off them again, though I will alter my pharmocopiea periodically. Nothing good has ever come of going off my meds. That is all I got. Best wishes.

You have to be able to communicate in order to give any sort of test. On a mass level that involves written communication. Literacy happens to be a very good measure of a certain aspect of general intelligence - but IQ tests are not even measuring literacy. They are merely using it ... because they must. And people who are illiterate have serious impediments to the functioning of their brains to solve problems or come up with new ideas (which is really what intelligence is) ... i.e. their intelligence is limited by their illiteracy.
I know ... I know, you imagine the illiterate genius who can solve all sorts of problems but just can't ever communicate his genius to anyone because he's illiterate and has a vocabulary of 450 words ... Yes ... it's a sad story. And so frequent in its occurrence that there should be a law ...

Actually discovered this once when we stopped, after the gym, to try a Sprouts and, specifically, to get - yes - bean sprouts. Asked the guy. He said "we don't have those". My smile triggered his smile and immediate comment (probably standard) - "yeah, I know ..... but we have alfalfa sprouts".

I knew people in high school who used to go crazy for the lowest gas price. They'd drive 30 miles extra to get gas a penny cheaper.
But it was worth it to them. It wasn't really the price or total cost. It was the thrill of the game. THey loved doing it. They loved talking about it. It was a great thrill to them - certainly worth the cost.

Single screw WILL work for a scope mount. But the rear of the mounting rail will have to bear hard against that bit of the front of the receiver ring.
"Female" contour of scope mount will have to be an exact match to outer diameter of barrel from screw to receiver.
E mail me, anyway. I'll find a way to send a sketch back to you. You'll also need a downward pressing leaf spring, anchored by an extra long screw going through the mount's front aspect, and running down through a groove in the mount, towards the rear aspect, near the receiver.
The screw will hold down both the front of the mount, *and* the front of the leaf spring....which will reach back and bear downwards on the rear aspect of the scope mount.
I can make a good many things in my wee shop, but this would exceed my tooling, not having a vertical mill with horizontal traverse screw table.

Aetius - you're thinking of Saddam's relative and one-time intelligence (ha!) chief, Barzan al-Tikriti. The executioner was good (British-trained, I think?), did his homework - but someone forgot to tell him (probably his own side, our side was very professional on all this) that Barzan had degenerative disease that likely had weakened/decalcified his bone system. So I believe the formula was followed (body weight, drop height), but ..... oops, didn't figure in the bone weakness. So, headless Barzan.
During the first (Dujail) trial, Barzan was comic relief. Hilarious to see Saddam glaring at him with the obvious "shut up, you idiot!" look. One time the prisoners "resisted" by refusing to dress for trial. So they showed up in their pjs - well, some casual/home dress for Arabs looks like pjs anyway, so no huge difference. Well, this "protest" lasted all of a day or two, without any effect. So they went back to dressing normally (Saddam, as always, dapper with the good graying beard and the pin-stripe suit without a tie)
Barzan comes out ..... still in his pjs. Saddam's look was priceless.

I have a bit of experience with a bipolar former spouse. I so hope they are doing it with the approval and guidance of a doctor who is totally informed and has helped them with their medications. W tried this on her own and it went really badly. If you are on a relatively even keel, not good to mess with it. You can crash and burn and getting back to a good zone can be really difficult. Best advice I can give is to PLEASE try to get her to not self medicate and to bring her doc on board.
That said,
If the friend starts to get depressed, I found the best thing was just to be there as much as possible, to not be judgmental, and to be encouraging and a good listener. I would defer to advice of others who actually have dealt with depression personally as to what a good friend can do. Because that seems the most likely outcome of going off ant depressants.
If the friend bounces the other way, and becomes elevated, that is a whole other ballgame.
Again, try your best to get her to keep her doc in the mix. Self medicating or quitting is playing with fire. This I do know.

My equipment is hung on a home-made rack built from scrap wood, sprayed with one of those anti-odor sprays, in the garage, which is generally warm to hot and very dry, year-round. So, no problem there.
However, I do recall some guys, in the past, who apparently would just toss their bags in the car, then take them out again at the next game/practice. Yowza, ya gotta be kidding me. In one case it got so bad the guy got "the talk" from the team - he mended his ways.
Then there was the guy who enjoyed his beverages *before* the games on Friday nights. He reeked. Even in the cold dry air of the rink, when you'd skate by him ...... wow. Somehow he never got hurt. His team put up with him for a while, then got rid of him.

Last year on a blog, I was in a discussion about IQ scores and academic achievement in Europe. Essentially the conversation was based on a commonly cited listing of IQ by Euro country and comparing to PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) test scores from another study. Some comparisons had been made in an article which led to the blog discussion.
Some things with some countries' IQ seemed a bit off based on scores from a decade before (but they do change) so I started looking at info on the original published IQ study. There were some adjustments to the raw IQ data for this or that reason which I assume were legitimate. But for a major country I came across the fact that actual IQ scores were not available. So how did they get the reported IQ score? They used PISA scores as a proxy for IQ since past studies showed
a correlation. That is reasonable for the IQ study perhaps but not helpful when in turn correlating those results to current PISA scores.

IIRC, if you are driving, Federal law allows one to transport a gun through other states. Doubt you'd have any problem in Arizona, or even in New Mexico.
Also, you can use a Federally licenced gun dealer to have them properly transported for pick-up in another state. Nevada does not have a registration or reporting requirement anymore, and if your gun is legal in Texas, it's legal in Nevada.

I've been back to Pahrump and watched it grow, that little lot is still a piece of desert with street signs and everything....But I do like the area, they even have a Wally world now...and several large casino's. And of course Miss Kitty's resort for the tired traveler (male) Not actual name, but you get the idea.

In the "olden days" you went to the movies or the mall. I grew up in the mountains, and just never got that hot. Played in the local creek, and the water was always cool. Captured crayfish, and mostly just rode my bike fast to keep cool...

Money is not wealth. When workers start storing items of value or barter skills the politicians call that hoarding and try to stop it.
The IRS just looks for wealth and finds a way to bring it under government agency control. The IRS is the equivalent of a White Elephant given as a gift-you-must-accept to an up-and-comer by the emperor.
People think IRAs are wealth.
IRAs are just an attempt to partial privatize Social Security. The Federal Government controls IRAs through various agencies. You will know the Federal Reserve, Banks and other investment firms have lost all influence if IRAs are ever nationalized.
You could balance the federal budget, pay off the national debt, and destroy every dollar in existence and it wouldn't increase or decrease the wealth that exists at that moment. A map is not a territory.
