Press Conference Thread

Breaking.

Update: The official statement said that Trump wanted to give his new Chief of Staff a "clean state," but CNN is claiming that John Kelly wanted Scaramucci out. Who knows, maybe he insisted on that as a price of taking the job.

So, the rumors I hear, which are just rumors and I have no idea if any of this is true, is that Jared and Ivanka wanted Scaramucci in. Their plan was that Scaramucci would be part of some palace jockeying to get Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon out.

They got the first half of that, but Bannon stayed. Now their pick for Comms Director is also fired.

It's a strange thing that Reince and Steve Bannon were (per this rumors) allies, but I guess maybe they were tactical allies just against the Jared/Ivanka wing.

At any rate, while I wasn't a fan of Priebus, I'm even less of a fan of the Jared/Ivanka liberal wing.

Press Conference: Livestream here. So far, McMasters and Mnuchin have each taken a turn to denounce the auto-gulpe in Venezuela and announce personal sanctions on the dictator Maduro, freezing his personal assets in the US, and threatening to impose similar sanctions on anyone assisting in the coup against democracy.

They did not (unless I missed it) announce the US would embargo all Venezuela oil.

Update: No, I didn't miss it; they did not announce any embargo of our oil to Venezuela (do we have to refine it for them?) or any of Venezuela's to the US. They did allow they would "monitor" the situation and left the Oil Card on the table, but it sounds like they don't want to do it.

106 Reince isn't gone because it's personal. He was a lifeline to Congress, and they've spectacularly proven themselves useless. Trump probably still likes the guy, and in turn Reince is not going to slag everyone. I can't remember the last time I saw a disgruntled Trump man.

As for Scaramuci, it is probably the same thing. Yes he was a new hire, but if Kelly is the new chief then he gets to pick the staff he works with every day. I would have liked him to work with Scaramuci, but I can't say I care either way...

He probably should have spent a little more time talking with her before he knocked her up the first time. He would have recognized that she wasn't his intellectual equal before it cost him an arm and a leg, and probably a good relationship with his two youngest sons.

Wrong question I think. Those guys are all politically savvy, so they wouldn't simply come out and oppose Trump. Instead, they simply failed to use all of the tools of persuasion at their disposal to get the desired results (I'm thinking blackjacks), all while pretending to be allies. You are correct that if they're really good at it, it's tough to tell they're doing it. However, I don't think anyone thinks those guys are Trump's friends.

But he hasn't actually done anything to stop the agenda. Ryan is a midwest nice gosh golly gee kinda guy and always has been. I'm not surprised Trump who is just a tad different isn't exactly his cup of tea.

But they seem to work pretty well together. Go back to the Rose Garden celebration when the House passed the repeal bill and watch the interaction between the two. If there is any real hostility, Trump sure as hell isn't showing it and he does tend to show hostility from time to time.

He hires people. Some of his hires have worked out well - Mattis, Haley - and some have not - Scaramucci. I don't get into the jumping up and down aspect that so many do with either the intense despite or the intense apologist.

Yea, I gotta disagree. Ryan actually did get the Repeal bill through the House. And he has had a repeal Obamacare and tax cut agenda long before Trump came along.

Trump hasn't exactly been perfect in this process. I don't remember a single Obamacare repeal only speech since he's been in office. Obama gave over 40 of them when they were passing Obamacare. And he tends to be somewhat mercurial on what he wants, often changing positions in the course of a day.

If I see Ryan working to actively thwart Trump I'll agree but I haven't seen it at all.

I have no idea what backroom deals were offered to win her support. I do know that Zinke called from the administration and made some threats about from his position running the Interior department which just got her to cancel some hearings to bring some of his team onboard.

I think some of you overestimate the power to bribe some of these Senators. I don't think there is a person on the planet that can get McCain to do something he doesn't want to do. They don't call him Maverick for nothing.

Eh, I think you're stretching. Nothing happens in DC that doesn't eventually leak out. And more, what exactly would be his motive? His agenda pretty much is Trump's agenda. He even had $1.6 billion in last weeks spending bill for the wall.

Again, if I see Ryan do something or even hear a well placed rumor of him doing something I will start to believe it. Until then it just sounds like more of the RINO screaming without a lot of evidence.

Mooch is a great self-promoter, but he's more of an auto-fellater. He's been working on joining the administration ever since Trump won, but, in his words, got clock-blocked by Priebus and Bannon back in January. He started strong last week and I wanted to like him.

The he went unhinged. That's because this little prick saw himself as a Trump mini-me. It all went to hell, and fast.

What wasn't widely known is that he had a son earlier last week by the wife who served divorce papers on him later last week. Which explains his rant to The New Yorker mid-week. And some of you believed this was scripted. If he wasn't drunk or coked up, he should have been. He embarrassed himself and Trump. He even leaked that Priebus would get fired.

The Mooch's bigger issue was that a Chinese outfit with mysterious government connections, which Big US Banks won't deal with, wants to overpay for his business. The Mooch still needs the same kind of approval that Hillary got for that uranium sale -- which is why the Mooch hadn't yet officially joined the WH. And he wants favorable tax treatment that he's no longer entitled to. This was a scandal waiting to happen, and the Mooch didn't do himself (or Trump) by making himself so hot so early.

So Trump realized he made a mistake, and Kelly is cover.

When McCain was campaigning here in 2016, he was promising that he would "lead the effort to repeal Obamacare." At town halls, he would rail about how O-care was causing our premiums in AZ to skyrocket (I can personally vouch for that), and how 14 of 15 AZ counties only had one O-Care provider.

But when it came time to follow through on his promises, McCain betrayed AZ, as always. He has pulled this same shit on border security for decades.

Why Republicans here keep voting for the sleazy liar is beyond me.

The only ray of hope I see is that Kentucky elected Bevin who ran on a very narrow platform which specifically included the repeal of the Medicare/Medicaid expansion in the State and he won big time and then kept his promise and shut it down.

So there may be some hope.

That would be the one area they don't seem to line up all that well. But Trump used to be pro-amnesty to. After the 2012 election he was calling Romney dumb and said deportation was "mean". People can and do change.

Maybe they'll have a big break. Doesn't sound like it will be on taxes which Sanders just said they are working closely with the leaders of the House and Senate and it doesn't sound like it will be over the House budget which Mulvaney, a guy who used to work on the House budget, just endorsed over the weekend, but there could be something. We'll see.

596 Venezuela crude is very high in sulfur. The only refineries within reasonable distance to them that can refine for profit are in the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Literally no other country have the facility to process this stuff for profit.

598 1. 'heavy' means the crude oil is thick, viscous, dense; it takes more energy to raise its temperature to the 'cracking' point where it can be separated into gasoline/kerosene/other types of fuel/and filter out the harmful residue. 'Light' is the opposite.

2. 'Sour' means the crude oil has a lot of sulfur and other things - that means that you have a lot of eco-trash to sequester and deal with once you're done and since that costs money to do that cuts down on your bottom line - to say nothing of it taking up valuable space in the concoction.

Libya, for example, has 'light, sweet' crude and is very highly prized thus the desire to destabilize the place so some European functionary could take it over.
