Trump Fires Scaramucci/
Press Conference Thread

Breaking.

Update: The official statement said that Trump wanted to give his new Chief of Staff a "clean state," but CNN is claiming that John Kelly wanted Scaramucci out. Who knows, maybe he insisted on that as a price of taking the job.

So, the rumors I hear, which are just rumors and I have no idea if any of this is true, is that Jared and Ivanka wanted Scaramucci in. Their plan was that Scaramucci would be part of some palace jockeying to get Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon out.

They got the first half of that, but Bannon stayed. Now their pick for Comms Director is also fired.

It's a strange thing that Reince and Steve Bannon were (per this rumors) allies, but I guess maybe they were tactical allies just against the Jared/Ivanka wing.

At any rate, while I wasn't a fan of Priebus, I'm even less of a fan of the Jared/Ivanka liberal wing.

Press Conference: Livestream here. So far, McMasters and Mnuchin have each taken a turn to denounce the auto-gulpe in Venezuela and announce personal sanctions on the dictator Maduro, freezing his personal assets in the US, and threatening to impose similar sanctions on anyone assisting in the coup against democracy.

They did not (unless I missed it) announce the US would embargo all Venezuela oil.

Update: No, I didn't miss it; they did not announce any embargo of our oil to Venezuela (do we have to refine it for them?) or any of Venezuela's to the US. They did allow they would "monitor" the situation and left the Oil Card on the table, but it sounds like they don't want to do it.

so now we can easily disregard his liberal tendencies, and his mouth. He deflected the blame for removing Priebus ... moving on now.

116 When Kelly was named as CoS to replace Priebus, there was noisy rejoicing in many parts of the dextrosphere. To the effect that, well, *finally*, we're going to have a tough squared-away former Marine running things. Shipshape at last! Iron discipline! Booyah!

Let us recall that "Diamond" Don Regan was himself a former Marine officer. And yet his tenure as White House chief of staff under Ronald Reagan was a string of disasters.

The administration lost control and coordination of fiscal and interest rate policy to where the 1987 "Black Monday" crash occurred. The Iran-Contra fiasco was allowed to metastasize to where it actively imperiled all of the rest of Reagan's second-term presidency. And, per Regan's later memoirs, every single decision of any consequence in the West Wing was having to first be filtered via Joan Quigley, Nancy R's consulting astrologer, an absurd practice which Regan was unable to stop. A parade of horribles.

Wrong question I think. Those guys are all politically savvy, so they wouldn't simply come out and oppose Trump. Instead, they simply failed to use all of the tools of persuasion at their disposal to get the desired results (I'm thinking blackjacks), all while pretending to be allies. It was not clear whether Mr. Scaramucci, who is known informally as "The Mooch," will remain at the White House in another position or will leave altogether. It was neither Ryan nor McConnell that tried to stop the repeal effort. They seemed to work pretty damn hard to get it to happen.

And if you understand the process of reconciliation one of the down sides is that things have to proceed in a sequential fashion. That's why Obamacare repeal was first on Trump's agenda to be followed by tax reform which they are already working on.

I put the blame on the 3 Senators who sunk this, McCain, Collins and Murkowski. They are the ones working to derail the agenda.

258 Very hard to say whether the Hill GOPe has helped/hurt Trump's "agenda" on the first big item through the pipeline - O-care - because the WH has signaled from the outset that they'd sign just about anything. No must-haves, no red-lines. Very, very, very odd approach for a WH on gigantic politically central legislation. Trump only demanded "something", the Hill GOP tried to send him "something".

Yeah, yeah, could be the "phased" strategy the WH talks about - which is real, and does reflect process reality in terms of reconciliation and the rest - but I'm stunned that nobody at the WH realized the politics of this (zero GOPe credibility) required some confidence-building measures up front.

From years of collateral info on their behavior and preferences, it's reasonable to guess that both McConnell and Ryan will hamper more than help Trump on his bit items - because he was elected primarily *because* of these big items, and these are the issues on which the GOP has utterly failed, and on which the GOPe was most horrified by Trump's candidacy.

Everyone raise your hands, with cites from inside-the-Beltway actions and statements, who thinks the GOP leadership will enthusiastically work to restore rule of law in immigration, or a more aggressive less passive trade policy. Except that they, and lesser lights such as Grahamnesty and Cory ("Chauncey") Gardner were all known well in advance to be impediments. It's not like that suddenly came out of the blue.

Yet despite this knowledge, Majority Mitch failed to either work round them, cajole them, or threaten them to where they fell in line.

McTumor is an outlier. He is going to stubbornly spend whatever remains of his life doing whatever he can to monkeywrench Trump, who succeeded where he failed in winning the Oval Office. That can't be changed.

But no one can plausibly claim that a brazen pork queen like Lisa Morecokeski can't be bought off to get a big bill through the Senate. Weird Sister Susan similarly.

Yea, I gotta disagree. Ryan actually did get the Repeal bill through the House. And he has had a repeal Obamacare and tax cut agenda long before Trump came along.

Trump hasn't exactly been perfect in this process. I don't remember a single Obamacare repeal only speech since he's been in office. Obama gave over 40 of them when they were passing Obamacare. And he tends to be somewhat mercurial on what he wants, often changing positions in the course of a day.

If I see Ryan working to actively thwart Trump I'll agree but I haven't seen it at all.

Got to find them first. Now Trump may be screwing the pooch, but OTOH it's better to deal immediately with a personnel problem than to let it fester. Bad news early is good news; if you realize someone isn't working out, give 'em the boot right away, and keep doing that until you get someone who DOES work out.

Consider that Lincoln went through, what, half a dozen commanders of the Army of the Potomac, but didn't shitcan those commanders quickly enough, and the war continued, and a lot of men died, because he waited.

They got the first half of that, but Bannon stayed. Now their pick for Comms Director is also fired.

It's a strange thing that Reince and Steve Bannon were (per this rumors) allies, but I guess maybe they were tactical allies just against the Jared/Ivanka wing.

335 I don't mind the circular firing squad so much in the press room.

But there are hundreds of Obama leftovers who need to be flushed from other departments. If Trump wants to fire people he can do it en masse.

Too much attention is being paid to the wrong areas. Sessions is too busy reminding people why Republicans were voted out to go after Hillary and the rest of the criminal conspiracy that was the Obama administration. He can't even get the DOJ to stop its jihad against the Little Sisters of the Poor.

All while Trump floats fantastic ideas like cutting off ACA subsidies for Congress, but doesn't ever follow through.

OT: I saw where my insurance agent, Lamar Alexander, floated a proposal to let people in my county out of the ACA because there will be no plans available here on the exchange starting next year. I doubt that will happen for the same reason Charlie Gard had to die. You can't let a person escape tyranny, or before you know it everyone will want out. We will be sacrificed for the "greater good."

This is a shit show.

It has nothing to do with private sector vs public sector.

If you're a business hiring and firing people in lofty positions every 10 days you're not going to last long.

I still say constant purges of people Trump himself hired is eventually going to give voters the impression he's just passing the buck and refuses to take responsibility or even knows what to do.

How about instead purging all the Obama holdovers? There's plenty that Civil Service laws don't protect.

345 Ace wrote a good post back in the "bad ole days" talking about how all of the news stories about Obummer weren't about policy, rather they were a McGuffin in a plotline of the hero President.

I wonder if lately the same thing has been happening with discussions of Trump. With Trump as the hero or the villain depending on the plotline the writer wants.

It doesn't help that a lot of the motivations of the news stories DO seem to have a personal emotional motive against Trump.

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/345514.php

"This is a movie. And Barack Obama is the Hero. And the Republicans
are the Villains. And policy questions -- and Obama's myriad failures as
an executive -- are simply incidental. They are MacGuffins only, of no
importance whatsoever, except to the extent they provide opportunities
for Drama as the Hero fights in favor of them.

Watching Chris Matthews interview Obama, I was struck by just how
uninterested in policy questions Matthews (and his panel) were, and how
almost every question seemed to be, at heart, about Obama's emotional
response to difficulties-- not about policy itself, but about Obama's
Hero's Journey in navigating the plot of President Barack Obama: The Movie.

As with a MacGuffin in the movie, only the Hero's emotional response to the MacGuffin matters."

All of which, like everything else, just points back to what has always been the key point about '18: increasing a majority of serious/reliable GOP senators by going after vulnerable Dem incumbents.

The Washington DC Establishment don't want to do shit, just keep getting elected, getting richer, and keep those contributions coming in.

President Donald Trump and his desire to ACTUALLY KEEP Campaign Promises is an existential threat to the pretend Conservatives in the GOP Establishment.

443 I said late last week that Tony Mooch wouldn't last a week.

Mooch is a great self-promoter, but he's more of an auto-fellater. He's been working on joining the administration ever since Trump won, but, in his words, got clock-blocked by Priebus and Bannon back in January. He used his success against CNN to get Trump to see that he was just the guy to take care of the leakers.

He started strong last week and I wanted to like him.

The he went unhinged. That's because this little prick saw himself as a Trump mini-me. It all went to hell, and fast.

What wasn't widely known is that he had a son earlier last week by the wife who served divorce papers on him later last week. Which explains his rant to The New Yorker mid-week. And some of you believed this was scripted. If he wasn't drunk or coked up, he should have been. He embarrassed himself and Trump. He even leaked that Priebus would get fired.

The Mooch's bigger issue was that a Chinese outfit with mysterious government connections, which Big US Banks won't deal with, wants to overpay for his business. The Mooch still needs the same kind of approval that Hillary got for that uranium sale -- which is why the Mooch hadn't yet officially joined the WH. And he wants favorable tax treatment that he's no longer entitled to. This was a scandal waiting to happen, and the Mooch didn't do himself (or Trump) by making himself so hot so early.

So Trump realized he made a mistake, and Kelly is cover.

"hey old buddy Trump, can you give me a very public job temporarily to push my harpy wife over the edge so I can save some millions in getting shed of her, I know she hates the fact of you being prez so me taking a job in your admin would probably tip her over the edge"

I'm not FNM journolist and I don't doubt that there was real turmoil in the West Wing the past month or so, but my quirky sense of humor just thinks it would be funny if Trump wanted some "squirrel" for the FNM to chase and Scaramucci wanted to cut ties to a lefty wife with minimum cost.

McCain also betrayed his own voters in AZ with that vote. Not for the first time, of course, but it still pisses me off.

When McCain was campaigning here in 2016, he was promising that he would "lead the effort to repeal Obamacare." At town halls, he would rail about how O-care was causing our premiums in AZ to skyrocket (I can personally vouch for that), and how 14 of 15 AZ counties only had one O-Care provider.

But when it came time to follow through on his promises, McCain betrayed AZ, as always. He has pulled this same shit on border security for decades.

The only ray of hope I see is that Kentucky elected Bevin who ran on a very narrow platform which specifically included the repeal of the Medicare/Medicaid expansion in the State and he won big time and then kept his promise and shut it down.

So there may be some hope.

508 No, no Trump "antics" cost us anything on O-care, or anything else.

The fainting and pearl-clutching and lack of understanding of Beltway realities will get no rest during the Trump years.

There are real problems, real disastrous problems, created by real clueless irresponsible cowardly unintelligent people, and a real disconnect between the electorate and what happens in the Beltway. And as the O-care thing illustrates (not the "failed" vote, the whole thing - the lack of any GOP seriousness on the issue, their desire to bail-out insurers, and keep the expanded welfare river flowing, the complete lack of any specific agenda of reform that will actually help), the GOP's failures are not in any way a by-product of Trump's histrionics.

Trump's existence partially illustrates the breadth of this disconnect. But ephemeral personnel issues or "tweets" are no part of the problem.

550 No, no Trump "antics" cost us anything on O-care, or anything else.

80 yrs old, at 1:30am, cackling like a banty rooster in the hen house, two weeks post near frontal lobotomy... wanders around Congress voting on various things like repealing healthcare. An issue he ran on when it did not matter, as Obathouse was in orifice. But when it counted, nope! He wanted the spotlight on his swansong. And he got it.

He preened like a cockatoo, accepting calls from Ole Joe Biden, backslapping Schumer, earning the adoration of libs and N. Vietnamese. All while multi-tasking and crapping his Depends with the foul-traitorous odor of failure. Failure to be elected President and jealous as hell over President Trump. It was rumored that after the vote he said "Let's see you make America great again after that, Donald!" to the laughter of Dims. This only makes me fonder for the traitor.

As I said a few days ago, the only thing that would have made his vote ok would be if he crapped his Depends during his aisle-crossing (that he is so proud of, the wet start), dipped his hand into his nethers, and smeared rancid feces on Schumer and the others as they sold the country some more of their brand of torture.

598 1. 'heavy' means the crude oil is thick, viscous, dense; it takes more energy to raise its temperature to the 'cracking' point where it can be separated into gasoline/kerosene/other types of fuel/and filter out the harmful residue. 'Light' is the opposite.

2. 'Sour' means the crude oil has a lot of sulfur and other things - that means that you have a lot of eco-trash to sequester and deal with once you're done and since that costs money to do that cuts down on your bottom line - to say nothing of it taking up valuable space in the concoction.

Libya, for example, has 'light, sweet' crude and is very highly prized thus the desire to destabilize the place so some European functionary could take it over.
