"It's one of those things I used to do and try not to talk too much about, because it's not something you go to promote something at, or do anything for any self-gain at all," USO tour veteran Kid Rock recently told MTV News.

"But what I've learned is that maybe if I do talk about it, the more I can encourage some other people in my position to go, because they're really happy over there just to get a slice of America at any level..."

"I would encourage anybody that hasn't gone to really think about it," he continued. "It's really a rewarding, life-changing experience."

I wrote a looong essay about this back in 2011, pointing out (from personal family experience) that euthanasia-in-hospice basically already happens in the US on a daily basis -- when you get sent to "hospice care," they are in reality intentionally killing you -- they give you morphine and dilaudid purportedly to "manage pain" but in reality they are intentionally trying to suppress your breathing and heart rate so you die within a week, max. Almost no one in the US ever actually dies "from" the disease they have -- instead, they usually die from the "side"-effects of the "palliative care" they are given in hospice -- i.e. you die from a slow-motion opioid overdose, administered for that very reason by the doctors.

This is the most taboo subject in medicine.

Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3...

Look, if someone checks THEMSELVES into a hospice as a way of going down to the finish line easier, no problem. Everyone gets to check out however they want.

138 Sorry, I disagree with the broad brush of "hospice care is actually euthanasia"

If you wait to enter hospice when you are in intractable pain and within a few weeks of dying, hospice can ease that death.

But I have had family members with terminal illness contact hospice while still functioning and hospice was a wonderful gift for them. My cousin, who died last year from ovarian cancer, had been told at the cancer hospital she was admitted to that she had maybe a couple of weeks before death. She was depressed, overmedicated, etc.

Hospice was called, and within two days, the hospice physicians had reduced her meds, she was not just lucid but became mobile, went home, and fully lived her life, including visiting parks, taking art classes, etc. for almost two months until she became so advanced that she became bedridden, then died within a week.

Finally, he's FREE!!!

Free to piss all over the Middle Class and America, cuz they have committed the Most Terrible Sin of All - forcing John McCain to give credence to your wishes and dreams when he never wanted to.

I'm not saying that ALL hospice care is aggressive euthanasia. Your cousin got lucky and got into a good program. What I'm saying is that SOME hospice care (and the more extreme "palliative care") has as its goal to accelerate the death via intentional over-dosing of pain meds. Since that essay I;ve talked to a lot of doctors, and they confirm this. Yes, it's a "painless" death, which is the supposed point, but it's also a quicker death, which is what most hospitals don't want to admit (in those places where it happens).

196 168 In 2005 I briefly worked with a guy who was a very wealthy ex-executive of Amex. He knew McCain personally and always sung his praises. One day, after telling everyone that McCain would be running for and becoming President in the "next cycle", I was fed up and told him I wouldn't vote for him if my life depended on it because I'd rather have an actual conservative. He spent 5 minutes telling me off: McCain was a die hard constitutionalist and deep conservative and implied that he knew better than I because, well, he knew McCain, was rich and therefore smarter and better than me.
I often wonder what happened to that asshole.
Posted by: Hopped Up On Something at July 28, 2017 01:46 PM (B9t7n)

My first election was 2008. My gut told me Obama was horrendous, and John McCain would only be slightly better. I now feel totally vindicated in that decision, despite all the grief I received from my conservative family/friends (I'm in a deep blue state so I'm not sure why it matters, anyway). In 2012 I voted for Romney because I had been confirmed in my suspicion over the prior 4 years. However, it was much the same kind of vote- lesser of 2 evils.

I think 2016 is the last election I vote for the lesser of 2 evils. I actually like Trump, he obviously loves America and that was enough for me given the last 8 years. But in general, from now on even if I see an R next to their name and it's a guy like McCain or Ryan?

I'm throwing my vote to the Libertarians out of spite. My only exception will be if they have a history of being strong 2A advocates.

I didn't read Zombie's essay. Sorry for your loss and anyone else who has gone through this. I lost one rent already to cancer years back and the other is gradually declining but still battling to stay at home.

If Zombie's thesis would require me to believe that Plaintiff's lawyers do not exist or do exist and do not like to sue overdose cases in nursing homes then I can't do it.

In general overdoses do occur and the are typically accidental and or product of failing metabolism and the body's inability to breakdown the opiod and so the level actually goes up and subsequent doses are additive. Hospice doctors generally don't want anyone in hospice to have any pain if it can be avoided - because why? so they do tend to try and stop pain. Understanding that death is a foregone conclusion they will typically balance the scale more on alleviating pain and it can be some cases very difficult to control pain and maintain respiratory drive on someone who refuses intubation.

No offense intended to anyone.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo

Ah, but now you're getting down to the core issue.

Here is the dilemma:

If a person has an extreme ailment causing extreme pain. if you give them powerful opioids, they have two inescapable effects:

1. Relieve pain
2. Suppress vital signs and life functions, which suppress any possible recovery and accelerate death.

Neither one of these are "side"-effects -- they are both well-d=known and well-documented primary effects.

So when a palliative-care doctor give a sick patient dilaudid to "ease the pain," the doctor KNOWS that the drug is also going to kill the patient. He can'r feign faux-ignorance, or say disingenuously that he's only giving the drug to ease the pain. He knows that the drug is also going to kill the person.

As you said, if the patient has pre-requested this form of treatment ahead of time in a Medical Directive, then it might be OK to do; but in many many cases there IS no directive, and the person is placed into palliative care anyway, because there's "nothing more that can be done" for them medically.

This is not a debate about the morality of euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide; all I';m trying to say is that this ALREADY HAPPENS in the US constantly, but no one wants to publicly admit it.

If you're in favor of euthanasia, fine, we can have that debate. I just want it to be out in the open, and not a sub rosa de facto practice hidden from public view.

257 I long ago reached the point of absolute outrage fatigue.

I am incapable of being any more angry, any more outraged.

I can be no sadder for the innocents than I already am.

All I can do is find a way to seek some form of justice, in this world or the next.

...And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who live on the earth” and avenge our blood? Then each of them was given a white robe and told to rest a little while longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, were killed, just as they had been killed.… --Rev. 6:9-11

There are a couple versions of 'hospice' care in this country. One is obviously end of life. The other is predominately for the elderly who have recently had an injury or operation and need more thorough round the clock nursing care available. They don't need to be in a hospital, and perhaps families can't devote time to care-giving at that level. Medications are dutifully administered, meals are provided, resident assistants provide assistance with daily activities and nursing care is available.

Many senior and 'assisted living' facilities regularly provide hospice care for weeks and months. The patient eventually gets better and goes home in the end.

Animals are unaware of their state, they have no self awareness. HUGE difference between a person or an animal, or there used to be. Now that we have lost the concept of a soul or the difference between a "dumb beast" ie one without the ability to reason and a human we get lost in relativism.

Once you decide that human life is expendable depending on relative circumstance, then any human life is relative.

The left loves this because all that matters is the collective. The great grey mass can lose people on the fringes, because it makes the collective stronger--all is relative to the leviathan.

This right here is the crux of the issue. Thanks for bringing it up.

Because it is, in most states, illegal for doctors to intentionally kill a patient, they CAN'T necessarily be honest about their intent. because of this, despite what the hospital or doctor says, we don't really know their real intent.

I have had a lot of conversation with doctors about this very subject over the years, and a majority of them were pretty frank about it -- "getting it over with" is usually cited by them as a desirable effect of extreme pain med dosage. They see "prolonging suffering" as a form of unnecessary torture. So, yeah, accelerate the end of life by suppressing breathing, immune system and heart rate.

But they can never admit it openly, to the patient's family, or to a medical board.

Eh, I like those guys, and their fancy, massaged, beer-drinking cows.

Japan is saying that this is an automatic increase that kicks in when beef imports increase by more than a certain amount year-on-year. And the tariff before that automatic increase was 38.5%, so it's not really as drastic as it sounds.

I guess the big issue is that Australia (the other main exporter in that market) gets the tariff reduced to 27% as part of the TPP, which we've left.

But then presumably we'll be making a separate deal with Japan soon.

So... I'm guessing this is an Expensive Wagyu Nothingburger

338 As a note, when Germany went the National Socialist route, they started with euthanizing people with "a low quality of life".

They greatly expanded the program until they got too much push back from German Christians and then it went more under the radar, but they never really stopped.

And then eventually they moved on to Jews and other political undesirables. The medical establishment, unlike the religious one, never really objected much.

348 I am by no means any way shape or form possessing any moral authority on this subject. I respect all differing views by the horde.

As a mother who stood next to her ex-husband and daughter watching our 21 year old son fighting for his life in a coma with multiple severe body injuries from a hiking fall of 60' in February, we made the excruciating decision to let him go. He had massive brain injury which the neurosurgeons said more like than not he would end up in a vegetative state. He had a broken neck, back, pelvis, legs, feet, on top of having 3 cardiac arrests while in Life Flight to the trauma center.

Even in a coma, he grabbed my hand and squeezed as hard as he could. He knew. We were never pressured to end his life. We just knew that our beautiful and loving son would not want to live this way even if he could have survived the night. After our decision, they unhooked the vent and other equipment, gave him comfort care which is morphine and something else and we held him to the end.

We never had to face a hospital board, judges, administrators or others. His nurses, doctors and surgeons fought so hard for him and would have continued to do so had we asked them too.

God bless you little Charlie and your very brave parents.

They see "prolonging suffering" as a form of unnecessary torture. So, yeah, accelerate the end of life by suppressing breathing, immune system and heart rate.

But they can never admit it openly, to the patient's family, or to a medical board.

One thing I have learned is that it is very important for one's own personal health and sanity to be transparent about intents. Back before the progressive era whoever won the election didn't matter too much as Americans generally shared a pro-freedom, pro-Christian outlook.

As the left has moved farther and farther away from that it has created a structure where some votes are matters of life and death - many more people then Seth Rich would have died had Hillary won . This causes the volatility of politics to go way up.

I also don't wish violence on people, but the only way it stops, and it will keep getting worse, is when the left gives up its desire to dominate everyone else...

Why wouldn't ending the suffering of a person also be love?

380 yeah hospice can be a good choice, and even palliative I suppose. The point is CHOICE, and avoiding constant serious pain. Some "rough" treatments for moderate chance of slightly longer life are avoided, and a slightly shorter life can have more clarity. I was told some stay on hospice for a year, though usually shorter.

The main thing is have the right people do it for the right reasons. Government should not be making the choice ... though it probably should also not have to fund expensive/futile end of life operations.

The hospital here offered hospice pretty quickly, including four years before necessary when they (wrongly I think) tried to convince me (for my Mom). Her doctor had also once suggested to me to consider when to "take the opportunity" to let her go. She had lewy body dementia, but was content and no real pains, moments of relative clarity.

The hospitals here now have "hospital doctors" that are assigned, instead of a person's regular doctor coming in and doing rounds. Two young gun doctors (guy from Russia, woman from Africa) tried to convince me she wouldn't make it, let her go ( That seemed a lot like offering "euthanasia") ... a day later she was better and we went home where we could have had hospice, but she recovered fine.

most of the workers at the hospital were more on my side. More home care subsidies would be useful perhaps, but not all have family willing or able to play that role. let the "buyer" beware. No death panels.

They're only on about "accepting death" if it's someone else's. These people are worse than just leeches on society, they're narcissistic, sociopath leeches.

Generation Snowflake (not just Millennials; there are still plenty of Boomers and Xers who are special snowflakes) just needs to be banished to the middle of Nevada, along with the Establishment fucks, and sealed off behind a wall for the betterment of humankind.

402 Oh, and I remember once seeing a cutesy bumper sticker "Rebublicans only care about you until you're born."

Considering the leftists are showing their true colors about not actually caring about The Children(TM) and conservatives have just proved that they actually DO, this bon mot has not aged well.

406 We are living in evil times. To hell with socialized medicine.

407 81 This is the most taboo subject in medicine.

My father died last year from cancer (likely caused from exposure to agent orange during Vietnam). We found out he had cancer on a Wednesday. The next Friday, he was admitted to the hospital where they discovered exactly how bad his cancer was.

There was no chance of surviving it. It was a very large, solid, and fast cancer. There was only a painful death awaiting him even with treatment. He, Mom, and I chose to stop treatment and he went to a hospice on Saturday morning where he was given pain killers.

We were informed that the morphine would stop the pain, but it would also speed up his death. He agreed to it; we agreed with him; and none of us wanted him to linger. He died on Sunday. We are very thankful that his death was fast enough that he didn't suffer.

I think there is a place for hospices. In my dad's position, it was a Godsend.

But every decision was ours. The government had no place in the discusions. The government had no say in the decisions.

I can't imagine being forced into that same position without a say in my loved one's care. But that's what Socialized single-payer medicine is: your loved one's life is nothing but an expense to be managed and minimized by middle managers with spreadsheets.

408 "That's crap.

Good physicians administered enough pain medication to their terminally ill patients to take away their pain. So what if it killed them a day earlier than their metastatic lung cancer?

It's not a taboo subject except in front of administrators and government hacks."

It is government interference that has changed that dynamic."

I agree! As a Catholic, whose church has clear rules about what is and isn't euthanasia, I have been told that all pain relief is legitimate as long as it is necessary for such relief. If it shortens life as a result, but is not intended for that purpose, it is morally good.

Unless you personally have watched a loved one wailing in the last stages of cancer or suffocating from being unable to breathe well, you probably cannot understand the necessary tradeoff of providing medicine to put the person into a stage of semi-oblivion so that they die peacefully. I pray that I am granted that mercy when my time comes. Being allowed to be in agony for an extra day or week is not a kindness.
