More on Fusion GPS: Veteran Washington Reporter Says Media Won't Report on Fusion GPS' Activities as a Major "Source" of "News," Because If You Dug Down Into It and Saw Fusion GPS' Emails With the Media, "It will look like an apocalypse"

A startling Q&A from Grassley and Browder, who testified today about the Magnitsky Act, Putin's efforts to overturn it, and Fusion GPS' role in helping Putin overturn it:

Lindsey Graham notes that Fusion GPS was both behind the anti-Trump Pee Pee Party Dossier as well as being on the same team as whoever set up the Don Jr. meeting.

Mollie Hemingway digests Browyard's testimony.

The full testimony is here, and I strongly advise you to read it. It's gripping as hell.

It's also alarming -- not just about the incredible brutality, venality, and corruption of the Russian government, but the even more frightening Shadow Media in the US which takes money from corrupt governments to get stories friendly to them planted in US media accounts, or to kill stories they don't like.

This tweet also has some of the highlights.

Lee Smith also checks in and digests the accusations flying about Fusion GPS. This is amazing stuff.

I'm not going to get into the details -- you'll have to click for those; this all seems very scary to me, scary enough I don't even want to mention this stuff -- but here's Lee Smith's conclusion:

It’s one of the peculiar paradoxes of the media today that the firm that sparked the anti-Trump resistance, and fueled the patriotism of those newly awakened to the dangers of Russian interference in American political institutions is working with companies intimately linked with Moscow. Fusion GPS is working to undo the U.S. sanctions on Russia implemented by the Magnitzky Act, and has been networked into Gazprom’s investment in Venezuela’s energy sector alongside Derwick Associates. And yet the U.S. media is focused on the Great Kremlin Conspiracy, the fruit of what appears to be only one in a series of smear campaigns waged by Fusion GPS. Sure, the reasons are partly ideological—Trump is not the press’ preferred candidate. And financial—the daily campaign against Trump is driving traffic that print and broadcast haven’t seen in a long time.

The press has its hands tied. “If they report that the Russia dossier is probably nonsense,” said Halvorssen, “and Fusion GPS is running information operations across the media, then that calls into question all the other stories that Fusion GPS has fed journalists in the past. Why are so few journalists willing to look into Fusion GPS?”

In order to report honestly on the Trump scandals, a weakened press would have to report honestly on Fusion GPS—which would mean lifting the lid on the incompetence and malfeasance of their own institutions and colleagues, which would reveal a scandal as threatening to democracy as anything Trump has said or done. “Imagine if they subpoena Fusion GPS’s emails,” said a veteran Washington reporter, “there are going to be lots of journalists in there who’ve taken stories from them. Big names, senior figures in the field. It will look like an apocalypse.”

There was a Mamet film about ten years ago called Spartan. It was okay. But what was great about it was its deadpan depiction of the US as a country in which government thugs and quasi-government thugs killed and assaulted people with impunity. Not just impunity -- they didn't even worry about it much. They acted as if this was all routine, not exceptional at all.

I'm starting to get that kind of vibe from all this.

Part of the reluctance to report on Fusion might be because it is owned/run by reporters.

23 This is actually comforting to me.

I can understand corruption, I could not understand mass delusion in the media. They are stupid, but a lot of what they print is destructive to the country, delusional, stupid, and not easily explained by partisanship or stupidity, or other normal means.

But this I understand - they were paid. By foreigners. They are treasonous whores, as we always suspected.

Posted by: It's me donna at July 27, 2017 06:10 PM (O2RFr)

31 Imo, so far, the strategic picture closely resembles the opening phase of WW2 in the Pacific.

The wikileaks emails put us inside the enemy's comms traffic.

The POTUS's actions in discrediting the msm and the growth of news streams outside the msm is on par with the Battle at Midway and gives us near parity on strategic maneuver capability.

What we're in now is the offensive phase much like Guadalcanal.

If the analogy is accurate and holds true (assuming the accuracy) we can expect a close analog to massive bonzi attacks by the enemy. These will test our resolve and endurance, but will also hasten the enemy's destruction if successfully resisted.

Ahead lies many brutal and quite possibly non-metaphorically bloody battles.

I do quite enjoy how at the beginning on the movie he just throws the audience in there with people throwing around jargon and there's no new guy audience pov character to whom any of it is explained. Nope. Figure it out.

Question, can what Fusion GPS is doing really be considered news? It seems like it's nothing more than press releases and propaganda.

Annnnd yet more "sources say" in these stories (obviously other than the testimony of the guy who, you know testified). How the hell do we know that Fusion GPS itself or one of its competitors isn't the source of those leaks?

Interestingly, and unexpectedly, the new-ish (and pretty disappointing) film "Absolutely Fabulous: The Film" (which is exactly what the title says -- a film update to the '90s TV show) is all about Public Relations firms and disinformation. Yes, it's a ridiculous slapstick comedy film, but the lead character -- Edina -- runs her own PR firm and is trying to twist stories to her clients' benefit -- but then runs into her own PR disaster when she accidentally kill Kate Moss.

The film itself gets a C+ at best (and I'm speaking as an AbFab fan), but it surprisingly did have a theme relevant to modern times. I.e. The is no different between "public relations" and "disinformation."

Right, and I thought that too - thinking I was clever, until I saw Grassley was also noting the same. But I am talking about the media itself. There are allegations that there are those in the media taking money to push stories on behalf of foreign governments. It's like lobbying, only a slight bit removed from "lobbying."

102 Another element that closely fits with the WW2 Pacific analogy.

Many of those who should be safe guarding their own morale and aiding others around them in doing the same are fully convinced of the enemy's invincibility and are preaching eventual full defeat of our own.

I think its obvious from the "report" that Fusion used Russian sources -although much of it looks completely made up. But Russian sources doesn't mean Putin is behind it -sounds like Fusion is corrupt enough to handle the lies by itself.

Who is Fusion's client? Jeb? Clinton? the DNC? Maybe i've just missed it, but it seems important.

We offer a cross-disciplinary approach with expertise in media, politics, regulation, national security, and global markets.

Email: info@fusiongps.com"

However, there is nothing beyond that first page.

I would be willing to bet, though, that there are "hidden" pages -- i.e. subdirectories -- on their server, orphaned from the rest of the Internet. But would be are visitable., if you only knew the URL.

Question for the techheads:

Is there any any to fish around and methodically uncover orphaned subdirectories in any domain? Must be possible.

I know that I myself have hidden subdirectories on zombietime, to which there are NO links from my front page. So far, no one has discovered them, but I imagine they could if they really tried.

OK - straight up question here. Because I really wonder. Have I been the only one going around saying "What the Fuck" for quite some time ?

I mean - when I was in college - the FBI straight-up assassinated a dude's wife and son at Ruby Ridge. I watched 'em burn people to death on TV at WACO. Watched agents go in decked to the nines to send a kid back to Cuba. To Cuba.

After 9/11 - all the new rules and agencies were pointed internally. They weren't pointed overseas. I watched people worry about using certain words on the telephone - because "they" might be listening. Hell - decades later - I saw more of the same worries here.

I watched it proven that the IRS was investigating people purely for political motive. I watched it proven that the BATF was running guns to Mexico. I watched it proven that we let people die in Benghazi. Hell - I saw it proven that we lied about why they died, while the dude that made the video they lied about went to jail. I saw a dude that made movies critical of the government go to jail.

And I saw a million other things. We all saw it on TV and in the news. None of it was hidden, and nobody will dispute that any of it happened in the macro sense. The "Everything is Fine Brigade will only quibble about the details - to obfuscate the bigger picture.

So why now are people suddenly starting to get "a vibe" ? I've had a fucking vibe since the early 90s. I've had a vibe over four different Presidents in two different parties now.

Posted by: Don Q. at July

pretty sure you sought me out and started with the insults. take a peek back up the thread if you are confused.

The Russians and others have sought to influence this election and others forever. Are you not familiar with their involvement in the nuclear freeze movement? Complaining that they were influencing this election is a specious argument because they have tried to influence every election. Claiming it is a big deal in this election is essentially fake news because it is not new and was never covered in previous election cycles.

If the Russians view American strength as an impediment to their efforts to gain greater influence or regain their lost empire then anything that weakens America is likely to their benefit.

Undermining American's faith in their institutions and the press strikes at the foundation of American power. Anything that does that accrues to their benefit. Use your imagination.

So to be clear, I never said they influenced the election, I said they are in our OODA loop. Meaningful difference.

It is entirely possible that the interests of the Russians were aligned for the short term of the election.

Pick up a vintage Rolls Razor on fleabay for about $10-20. Combines the safety of the classic safety razor with the seriously sharp edge of a straight razor (renewable with the stone and leather strop included in the kit).

261 124 "What's worrisome is if Russia's aim truly is to simply collapse the US, all they would have to do is have a few of their key people say Trump collude with them."

A very short and simple "long game" would be to commit a dozen or so operatives to create on-line identities as "conservatives" or "tea party supporters or Trump supporters by posting as such in social media (but tainting themselves as racist islamaphophic homophobes with those types of comments mixed in) for a few years, then have them blow up gay bars, mosques and black churches.

The same people who set it up and funded it all would be the same ones saying "We told you so" because they own and operate damn near all of the megaphones and soap boxes.

Not sure what they'd dream of accomplishing, but it would certainly create nearly instantaneous major civil unrest.
Whatever it is that comes after that, I suppose.

There won't nothing safe about them face-hatchets. I quit them when I got out of the Navy in 1970. I use the cheapest razor available and one lasts 6 months because I only shave 2 or 3 times a week.

I watched some clips from one of the debates a week or so ago and it was the one where Donny Two Scoops said he'd have her investigated and in the split screen there's Hillary and she just flashes this big old smile. Very creepy.

It just underscored that at some point during the campaign, Trump HAD to win it. He would have been utterly destroyed if he'd lost.

Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at July 27, 2017 07:16 PM (4ErVI)

266 @ 162

$5+ per blade means about $1.50 per shave. I'm ready to go all Ted Koczinski and live in a shack.

I soak my whiskers and coat them with a little Barbasol right after I shower. I let that sit while I brush my teeth. Then I get dressed (except for my shirt). That gives the already wet whiskers a good 4-5 minutes of soak before I shave.

I use the same blade for at least a month. But I don't shave on weekends.

Try something similar. You'll stretch the life of whatever razor you use.

Posted by: The Frugal Shaver at July 27, 2017 07:26 PM (4bjXi)

267 @#259:

I disagree but only mildly so.

Imo, the outing of the msm in such a blatant manner that it's obvious to anyone who's paying any attention at all, along with the growth of alternative means of mass comms and legit news spreading, brought us to a strategic parity with the enemy.

The msm is no longer has any real ability to filter what those of us in the fight are able to learn in real time. The allied forces have outfits that can mobilize on any topic of their choosing and bring the rain down at will.

The carriers CNN and MSNBC are, for all intents and purposes, out of action for the remainder of this war. Fox is badly damaged and struggling to stay in the fight but has as many enemy on board as friendlies.

The allied side has had the benefit of self motivated actions against the enemy by the likes of /pol and has outfits such as The_Donald subreddit as a comms channel.

One America News Network is building itself up to fighting trim.

And of course, there are the old fleet standards such as this place and its like too.

276 Honorable people are handicapped when it comes to fathoming the motives of the diabolical and dishonorable: we simply cannot conceive of anyone doing certain things unless they were driven to by desperate circumstances, so anyone luxuriantly and heedlessly choosing Evil is all but opaque to our understanding.

This is also why Americans as a whole have been so good-natured and easy to fleece: it's not our way, so we don't expect other people to behave like that either.

Human nature is to judge others by yourself: "I would never do so and so," so "Other people surely wouldn't either."

On the other hand, as the Immortal Willy said, "Filths savour but themselves." Which is why the Leftists always impute rotten motives to anyone they oppose: they're seeing themselves in the mirror, not us.
