Or, they didn't get the correct strains of influenza in the vaccine, and you were unlucky and exposed to a strain that wasn't in the vaccine.

Ha ha! I was in the midst of a discussion about the very same thing. A friend of ours has a few acres of 'garden', and has caught numerous raccoons and let them loose three or four miles away on the local golf course (lol). He was wondering of they returned.
We talked about spray painting their tails orange.
He said the woodchucks he catches 'don't make it'.

Was at dinner with a some clients and one guy was explaining that when he was in the artillery they had a live fire exercise. He and some guy in his unit took a mre can, cut the top and bottom off and put it where the fuse would go in the nose of the shell before they fired it off.

Yeah, I was also concerned about that, and sea level and temps and all that shebang. I figured it would be nearly impossible for me to make something properly.
Like I said, I am an excellent baker and cook, so I have pretty good instincts when cooking, but baking is much less forgiving. Add to that the condos not really coming equipped with KitchenAid mixers...I will have to come up with something else.

Couple of years ago I went into one of those CVS mini-clinics for something (bad splinter? can't recall). Nurse was older, smart, funny. She asked about my vaccination status. It was pretty good, but she recommended an early booster of the DT with a PDT, given "the situation".
She seemed OK, so I eschewed the standard discretion - asking whether the public health bulletins she surely reads actually identified the reason for the return of pertussis (illegal migration, esp. in this area). Can't recall her answer, but we had a good talk about the politicization of public health on that topic. She was furious about it, so was I, so we joked and wallowed in our impotent anger.

Vegetarian MREs - Humanitarian Daily Rations (HDRs), developed after 1991 (recall the MREs being dropped to displaced Kurds in northern Iraq). Basically, halal MREs, not really developed to be vegetarian but rather to avoid any religious/cultural dietary no-nos.

Just because you mentioned asteroids, i was reading the other day about an asteroid a while ago identified in a solar orbit that was wobbling around one of the closer Langrange points (L1 or L2, whatever), and they slapped on some temporary designation and said, you know, "Well, it's about yay big, and it's high in concentration of Titanium Dioxide based on spectroscopy, and it's in this sort of orbit..."
TiO2 being a major component in many white paints.

Yup. That was no asteroid. Just a chunk of the Apollo 12 mission (or whatever number it was) that didn't get flung far enough away when we were done with it.

I have a few months worth of MREs at the lake house. I take some out with me when I will be on the lake for the entire weekend, minus the spousal unit. They work for me, one meal a day for three days.
This helps me rotate the inventory.

I keep Mountain House, both cans and pouches, but it's expensive. Lasts much much longer than MREs. Also normal canned goods last far beyond the use-by date, as long as the can is intact.

Have mentioned before that when the hurricane was heading for NYC we had some spare time so I went across the street to check if there was anything I missed. One guy was buying 6 two liter bottles of diet pepsi. Some girl had a basket with a few containers of berries, which she was eating as she waited in the hour long line to get to the counter. Bunch of girls were in line talking to their friend on the phone telling her she should come over to their apartment because they had bought a wii so they could play during the hurricane.

I don't know if you need to worry too much about viruses in drinking water. Most viral transmission through fluid needs to be relatively quick I think. Let a virus swim around in fresh, pH neutral water for a few minutes, and it'll start to denature on its own. And if it doesn't, it's probably not pathogenic to humans anyway.
I think it goes something like that, at least.

I did not know that. I was reading some Father Brown mysteries and ended up reading "The Man Who Was Thursday"... and then I wanted to read everything I could find by him.
He lived through times when anarchists and progressives were trying to move the culture, so I think he'd recognize the antifa for what they are. The rule of thumb we used while I still was working was that it took an hour to prepare a 30 min presentation, but would take 4 hours to prepare a 10 min presentation. Maybe more, but, as Lewis might have said, "Brevity is the soul of wit."

That vaccine chart makes no sense. The number of annual deaths in the US is only 2.5 million now and was less than 1.5 million in 1935. Considering that the population was so much less before I have to imagine that the annual death number was that much lower.

Getting vaccines for the major, most threatening diseases is good and important but many, these days, seem to have the notion that vaccines are totally careless, free tools that can be used willy-nilly for any little bug. Overvaccinating is likely dangerous to people and society. Everything has a cost and must be used judiciously but there are so many who think that this fact about everything in life just doesn't apply to vaccines.

No, drain backup from the roof. Flat roofs can be cheaper to build, but always to operate.
We had a hailstorm move through, and drop a bunch of ice on the roof, which clogged the drains and gutters. Then it rained and the water collected until it got over the top of a roof vent. You can figure out the rest.
Next day facilities was boring emergency drain holes around the building just above the the roofing surface.

What were the dehydrated ration thingies that showed up around late 60's 70's?? that were supposed to replace c-rations. I don't think they did and were pretty horrible. Plus they used too much of your valuable water. They were lighter than c-rats though. Dunno if they got a designation or went beyond trials, can't remember.

Some of the pilots I worked with used to fly Ranger candidates in one of their phases, it was only a short 2 minute flight. Tradition had it they were supposed to throw hamburgers in the back of the helicopters for them to eat. Remember they would only get one (1) MRE a day. About 1200 calories. After several weeks... they are pretty damn hungry.

Yeah, it was bland at best. Often weird tasting. The fat and whatnot would be lost? That might account for the dodgy taste. They were pushed as rations for awhile for going out for days and stuff on patrols as they were light. The nco's used to enforce (well, try to) a lightweight approach and make everyone ditch anything but the essentials... extra ammo, extra water instead of luxuries like food, shelter and stuff but whatever was light and you could stick in your pockets, like ciggies, coffee and those biscuit things were good to go. Some crat stuff could be carried to be shared by the squad, but not many. Trouble is those dehydrated rats really ate up your water, so there was little point.

Chess is believed to have Indian roots. It would have gotten to us through the Persians, and maybe not until after Muslim conquests, but they didn't invent it. The word origin for Chess though is either Persian or Arabic. Its been a while since I listened to that episode of the History of English Podcast.

Rode two AMA events. One motocross, as "Amateur" on a Yamaha 125 cc "Tin Can" framed, stripped down bike. Made two laps, then DNF'd due to bike's tank having not been having been duly secured by rubber strap.
Second, was riding "in stead" of "registered" rider, at Riverside, aboard a Yamaha RD-350, in a road race event. Yes, I had my AMA "amateur
card. No, it didn't give me a damn bit of good.
Didn't even finish the first lap, with a DNF due to throwing a chain from a worn front sprocket.
At least, I tried.

I raced motocross during my last 2 years of high school. Then I got my license and it was on to muscle cars. That was some fun shit. I do have a mid 70's Honda 250 elsinore kicking around I picked up a few years back. Its way more primitive than what I rode, but I thought it was cool from a historical point of view. That was the era where things started to take off in the dirt bike world. Motocross bikes started evolving fast after that.

I always thought they represented siege towers. Those were a somewhat less common piece of medieval warfare, but a good siegebreaker. You build an armored wooden tower on a rolling platform as high as the castle you're trying to take and roll it up to the wall. Your troops can then climb the tower onto the walls, and once they've secured the walls, get into the courtyard and open the gates for the rest of your army.

they were still bitching about it when i left them 4 years later.

They sucked. Every single meal I ever pulled was some variation on chicken and gravy.
I just put a satellite ground station in to Burma, got to eat some of their army rations - nice. Didn't get sick +1, spicy is nicey, and easy to prep. At the squad level (sort of) they have what I would call a Kelly kettle, but slightly different to boil water. The guys get two nested cups, sort of like the uk crusader cups. Tea goes in one cup, rice and curry bag in the other. Hot water in both. The curry bag heats in the cup while the rice rehydrates/cooks.
No TP though. They had some sweets in a separate pouch, no go for me.
