The Railroad Bridge at Argenteuil
Claude Monet

The geometrically clean bridge is not what I expected to see when I saw the title.

6 Monet painted this bridge several times. It is a sensitive exploration of the modern paradigm: the trees are looking askance at the new structure, wondering if this is an inanimate behemoth, like a cliff, that must simply be tolerated, or is it rather a malignant, domineering presence? Their ambivalent postures reflect accurately the political stance f most large angiosperms of the era, and ambivalence that was to have shocking resolution in the fields of Northern France only decades later.

8 If you do a google search on the title, you'll see another version. Monet was known for his series-paintings. When you see them, they aren't really about the train (or whatever); they're about color, light, and textures.

Another well-known series is here:

15 This painting is also a very nice look at old and new. The wind-power of the sails contrasted with the steam-power of the train. I like how Manet keeps the human presence and technology minimal. Like a true landscapist, he focuses on nature, allowing humanity to dwell in it, rather than dominate it, like in traditional classicism.

Go download the free web browser called Waterfox. It is based on FireFox, but has a lot of the "phone home" telemetry that Firefox uses disabled. It uses the same plugins/addons.

Next, go to the firefox addons and go grab the free "Ad Block plus"

That should cure most of the problems.

Consider grabbing the "NoScript" addon as well - that will disable a lot of the javascript on a website -- but can break certain web pages unless you allow the content.

Oh oh oh crap I missed discussing gas taxes? I used to say about PA roads that PennDOT better be full of corruption because otherwise it was just plain old-fashioned incompetence.

This is where we discuss the omg everyone needs to buy more fuel efficient cars and drive less so people do and then it's omg we need to go to tax by mile driven because the gas taxes have fallen off!

In other news, for those so inclined in the Horde to pray, I can use prayers for Mommy (and me). My father's health is deteriorating very quickly and now his mind is going as well. When my brother and sil were here a few weeks ago, he looked at my brother and asked "so are your parents still living?" Last night Mommy called me concerned because she said Dad wasn't talking right and one of the things he asked her is why I wasn't there and she had to explain to him that I haven't lived with them for years now.

56 Mornin' Horde. Nice picture. It's interesting how subjects like this are treated in each period--here it's a positive image, clean and gleaming. These days you'd see some oppressive grey structure or a rusting dilapidated heap. (The dividing line in time for me seems the early 1900's. I saw something once specifically citing the sinking of the Titanic.)

Manet was attracted to trains as subject-matter. His Gare St.-Lazare series is also well-known. Impressionists painted the modern world and what it was like to live in it. They saw themselves as living in a changing world and wanted to document the experience, the essence of it. The "impression" of Modernism at a transitional time.

But, why isn't there some place that lists say, just the top 3-5 headlines at each of the major news sites?

I don't go to any of the majors because I'm not interested in their photos and blurbs I'd have to scroll past to read each headline.

I want just the headline--and if it's a topic I'm interested in reading more, right-click to open in a new tab and keep scrolling.

My order of surfing is:
1) Local NOAA weather
2) Ace
3) Insty
4) Drudge
5) GP

Then back to read the comments here.

That way, I know the major stories and, more importantly, who thinks which stories are important.

Seconded. I managed to get a lot of blanks filled in between my mom's passing in '04 and my dad's final years, but probably still missed a few things. (As proven by the scramble after his passing.)

The country at the time was reeling from the disastrous Franco-Prussian war. Monet volunteered for the job, so that the world would know that the people of the glorious French nation cared enough about beauty and culture to have even its railway bridges were painted by great artists, unlike the squareheads who just painted everything grey-blue. It is from this famous episode that the French became established as the world's leading nation of frivolous poofs and military failures.

Posted by: Kris at July 24, 2017 09:43 AM (nwqNw)

Skype, skype skype. That is a miracle that I wish I had had when hubby deployed in three other wars. You need a support base wherever you are-if the military has a deployed spouses' club, start going to it. If you have family nearby, talk to them at least once a week or so, so for both emotional support, and for help if something comes up that you cannot handle. If you don't have family nearby, let your friends/church/social group know, for the same reason.

if you aren't working, and don't have small children at home, consider volunteering, or getting a part time job. It will help use up empty hours.

Write love letters. Skype is awesome and great, but those letters are precious, and a tangible reminder to him that you love him. Dirty is good too. You both will appreciate it ; )

Love him. Love him when the faucet breaks, and water is spewing everywhere, and it's 11:00 pm on a Friday of a three day weekend. Love him when he can't tell you anything. Love him when he comes home, and has the thousand yard gaze. You will be his rock for the next 9-12 months. My prayers are with you as well.

Having seen both Option A and Option B,

B is the worst. Just awful because in the end, you are just facilitating the death of a loved one thru hospice. No help, no cure, just death. And death is messy and ugly. It just is.

Option A didn't go all the way. Tho Dad still recognized me. He died on the operating table, but they kept him "alive" long enough that I was able to go in and thank him for being my Father.
I would recommend that if possible. It closed the book for me on his life. And I have peace with that.

167 You really can't go wrong with Monet. This is not what I would have expected either though.

I think it may have lost some of its wonder, as we look at it through modern eyes. At the time though, this modern marvel (sorry to borrow the phrase, but it's the right one) deserved its own painting. Just because it exists.

168 >>In a sense, my family was fortunate. Dad's heart went before a day came he didn't recognize those closest to him. Had a morning dawned he didn't recognize me, that would have killed me.

My dad suffered from a degenerative condition for over a decade that slowly robbed him of just about everything. To make it worse, it spawned multiple side medical conditions including congestive heart failure the required a quadruple bypass.

He had periods of lucidity but he also had periods where he was completely confused. He was in an out of hospitals and other facilities over the last 5 years and my mother didn't miss a single day visiting him, not even in the middle of blizzards. Those 2 am emergency calls became a real dread.

I'd rather get hit by a train for everyone's sake.

173 Someone upthread mentioned issues with Drudge advertising. I have my desktop browser configured to only load minimal page content, and Drudge has a very specific page "coding error" which reacts in such a way as to disallow connections from computers configured this way. It sure seems deliberate. However he's still not refusing Android connections, so I can still read his content advertisement-free, just from another device.

For many people, time does fold in on itself, and if we better understood the process (we don't, modern psychology is not at all up to the task), we could find ways to help those with memory loss (which may not be the right word for it) to have as pleasant an experience with it as we can.

Instead, we have teams of healthcare workers scrambling to try to keep these folks locked away, bedded down, and over-medicated, all in the name of "safety."

Follow Moki's advice, it is spot on!

My son was overseas for the better part of six years, and Skype was our lifeline. Our military guys are very resourceful, so I'm sure your guy will also be able to find a phone service that he can use as well. When in Kyrgyzstan, son got a "cell phone" that was the size of a brick, and together with an international phone card, we could talk fairly regularly even when the internet was too sketchy for Skype. There are also all sorts of phone apps that allow you to text and/or call---Kakao was one of them. The guys who are already there will fill him in.

Best of luck to both of you and I will keep you in my prayers. I think you'll find that being able to keep in touch will help make the time go a little faster.

_________________

That's why every man named as a father in a legal proceeding needs to challenge the woman and demand a paternity test if he has any doubts at all. The guy in TX apparently thought that he might be the father of the ex-girlfriend's kid, and when she filed a child support action years ago, he didn't bother to contest it and she got a default judgment against him. Years later she files an action to collect the back payments, he then gets a paternity test and finds out it's not his kid after all, but oops, he's still on the hook for all the back child support payments -- even though it's not his child.

Always, always, always demand a paternity test when a woman files a child support action against you. Don't ever just ignore the paperwork and fail to show up in court. As this poor TX sap found out the hard way, it will bite you in the ass later.

249 Via Insty, a guy from Montana with a passion for studying lichens over-turns 150 years of "settled science."

Everybody knows that lichen are a symbiosis between a fungi and an alga, right?

Not so fast.

It's actually two different fungi and an alga.

But, you know, global warming is settled science what with it's long pedigree of . . . 30 years.
To say nothing of the vast and deep well of accurate predictions they've produced.

Others have given you good advice, so follow that! I'd add that setting a time that works for BOTH of you helps a lot and if it's short, don't worry about it. He'll appreciate the contact, no matter how short. (The five-minute phone calls in BMT taught me a lot.) Also, if you need to remind him of, ahem, "home cooking," set up some sort of secure way to do it and warn him it's coming so that he can take measures.

Love him, no matter what. He'll come back different, but love him nevertheless. And if you don't want to know about the danger, tell him that up front and he'll find wacky things to tell you. "So we come around the corner and he's on his tiptoes, trying to get into the backside of the camel to start humping, and we were laughing so hard....."

Then my dive partner rubbed the bait on the front of my shoulder and a ray latched on there. I had a hickey that, well, took awhile to heal.

It is fun to watch this stuff when it's happening, isn't it?

At some point Sessions is going to turn on the President. Publicly, I mean. The blowup is going to be ugly and the fallout is going to cause all sorts of damage.

The fun part for me will be watching the sputtering that has to accompany the about-face some will have to do, when they are no longer able to pretend Sessions is NOT a cancer on this Administration.

If the fluid looks like chacolate milk than yes, a good flush should clean the system out. Power Steering Fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs water(same as brake fluid). Have him check the reservoir cap seal as well.

If the pump or the steering gear is failing, it may darken the fluid. In which case, replacing the fluid may delay the inevitable, but not stop it.

Buy a turkey baster. Suck dark fluid out of reservoir; fill with fresh. Drive car a dozen miles, rinse and repeat. Be happy.

Dunno about a "flush," but the fluid is probably very dirty by now. You could do what I've done on many cars: take a turkey baster, suck out as much of the dirty fluid as you can, replace with fresh. Repeat over a few days, so that you've gotten nearly all of it out. You'll be ahead of 90% of the cars on the road.

(If you drive a Mercedes, as I once did, and if you use the dealer's fluid, beware: the stuff smells like garlic pretzels marinated in cat urine. Don't get it on you.)
