"I'm smart! Not like everybody says... like dumb... I'm smart and I want respect!"

Jeff Dunetz over at The Lid has some fun with Joy Reid, but it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
Joy Reid Rant About Trump’s 'Russian' Wives Is Proof You Can't Fix Stupid

This is becoming par for the course. The incredible insularity, ignorance and stupid laziness of the chattering classes. I accept that some people are simply less capable of higher-order thought. And I accept that some people are lazy. But why is the Venn diagram of those two segments of the population perfectly representative of the media? And it is unfortunately not restricted to the leftists....just talk to any of the mainstream Republican pundits about guns or the minimum wage or basic economics (supply and demand) and you will discover a startling stupidity.

So what's your favorite idiotic pronouncement from the buffoons of the fourth estate?

90 But goatexchange, even right here at the HQ we have commenters who claim to believe that the GOP, after being dragged almost against its will into its greatest partisan advantage (nationally) in history, doesn't dare actually address the main issues that brung 'em.

So the do-little/do-nothing GOP has a deep moat to protect it - the trap of a two-party system when neither party will do the people's will, and the apparently inexhaustible readiness even by many who support desperately needed change to rationalize GOP inaction.

101 Look, there are plenty examples of laziness and a lack of simple constructive reasoning. But, absolute maliciousness and partisan shaping is, by far, more prevalent. A lot of the examples used to suggest stupidity is nothing more than purposeful misrepresentation on issues they can't possibly solidly defend with facts, so they shoehorn their point by applying unreasoned stupidity.

102 As usual I will focus on the dumbing down of the "elites", even those who in general seem least clueless.

McArdle, quote above, is a good example. Like almost all of them, their high-water mark is to observe things that are ...... pretty obvious. Duh. From there, they generally descend into clueless stupidity like the passage quoted.

But CBD, it's the low effective intelligence and information base of much of the electorate that's the real problem.

We have a country stuffed full of smart people - smart when it comes to making a buck, developing a widget - as we always have. But that same populace, and large parts of even that highly effective minority, are utterly clueless as citizens.

I recall picking up a Bill Gates book back in the 90s. "The Way Ahead" or some such. In a bookstore. Flipped open to a few random spots. Even I was shocked at how idiotic it was. The guy is a good software businessman - end of story. I don't think the wave of clueless, ignorant tycoons who can't wait to share their lack of wisdom is random, it's a very telling aspect of America's civic cretinization.

130 I think this is the natural and inevitable result of a focus on narrative and having the politically correct positions on all issues to the exclusion of truth, facts, and reason.

We have for decades been watching kids being taught nonsense and stupidity in schools, not being taught the basics of what they need to know, and wondering how this was going to turn out. Well now we know what being taught leftist morality in the place of math, grammar, science, art, and geography results in: Susan Rice, Joy Reid, Sally Kohn, Ta-Nahisi Coates, and all the rest.

Kids are taught to revere science and its trappings but not its philosophy and meaning. They are taught who to honor in the past (never white men) but not what these people believed in. The only philosophy allowed is the ideology of the hard left.

168 CBD - exactly my theory (referring to the civic idiocy of smart rich people).

Gates actually had to do some of the hard stuff, building a business, competing ruthlessly (and some would say shadily). But he didn't seem to pick up much about life - though recently he stunned the world by saying that, um, maybe Europe admitting a zillion unassimilable migrants might, um, not work out too well. And his philanthropy hasn't been *entirely* damaging and stupid, far as I can tell (don't make a hobby of following it, but have some idea).

Zuckerberg on the other hand is a perfect example. Dude is a zillionaire before, and without, having to be a citizen or an adult, without building a business over decades, and certainly nothing like Carnegie and Rockefeller went through. Very unworldly kid, who with one tiny tweak in timing or circumstance, would be unheard of.

The old tycoons actually built. They created ex nihilo, in many cases, in areas involving huge risk, effort, and time. Today's IT tycoons? Some exceptions, but in many cases all it takes is one double or triple, and you're on the All-Star team.

Not a complaint - it's the very base of wealth of the country that makes instant tycoons possible - the wealth created almost entirely the old-fashioned way, in industries very different from IT.

And note that most of the biggest old tycoons didn't even dabble in politics or public affairs. They endowed foundations ...... which, two generations later, were tirelessly working to destroy mindset and civic infrastructure and freedom that made the success of the eponymous founders possible! (Ford Foundation, Carnegie Endowment)

214 My takeaway on the media is just how they present things.

Healthcare, soft drinks widen political divide

WASHINGTON -- As the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate considers dismantling the health care system that has helped Americans gain access to medical services for nearly a decade, some GOP lawmakers betray their loyalties in their choice of beverage.

Sen. John Smith (R-W.Car.) opted for only a Coca-Cola during a lunchtime recess on Friday, despite needing more nutritious food to think clearly during recent proceedings. Smith attempted to defend his midday meal, despite numerous advisories from the U.S. Department of Health and former First Lady Michelle Obama to consume healthy meals.

"I wasn't hungry," Smith admitted.

"Besides, I like Coke," he went on to say, referring to the beverage produced by one of the few Western corporations that did not divest from South Africa during that nation's apartheid reign.

Smith offered no comment as to whether he supported apartheid.

Smith did not elaborate as to the whether he bought his carbonated beverage, the bubbles of which release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which hasten the destruction of the polar ice caps, or acquired his drink at taxpayer expense.

Meanwhile, Democratic colleague Sen. Jane Doe of Pennsyltucky was also in Washington for the debate, despite a schedule summer recess for the Senate.

"We have work to do," Doe proclaimed.

"Sometimes, I grab a Pepsi for lunch and get right back to work," she continued.

Doe went on to say that she is a member of the "Pepsi generation," alluding to a decades-old advertising slogan by Pepsi Cola, the underdog challenger to its corporate behemoth rival, Coca-Cola. "The Pepsi generation brings fresh ideas to the table," she continued.

Smith did not comment on the link between his beverage's fizziness and the recent iceberg that broke off from the Antarctic ice shelf earlier in the week.

The pack of jackals referred to as the press corps regularly and snootily remind those of us in the serf class that journalism is a profession. A PROFESSION. Not something that can be done by scruffy bloggers in pajamas. Heavens no! It is a refined and demanding profession, they will go on to say, with corresponding high professional requirements and standards.

Standards which must have been imported at a professional SCHOOL of journalism. Where prospective journalists will be put through the mill, for years, and subjected to severe intellectual rigors, and carefully taught what's what. So that they will provide valuable service to the general public later on, as PRACTICING PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS thankyouverymuch. The guardians of the gate. The defenders of truth.

Except... when you look at it, as a practical matter, the snooze media turns out to be chock full of people like Joy Ann Reid who never themselves went to J-school.

And who are thus essentially down in the muck with those "unprofessional, untrained, undisciplined" scruffy pajama-clad bloggers whom the professional press corps so vocally and acidly disdain.

I believed Trump would lose, but in retrospect, there were signs that Clinton was worried. I've always wondered why they were so insistent on Trump abiding by the results of the election. Why didn't they just laugh and move on to something else when he said "We'll see." It was bugging them. Also Hillary and Kaine were already on full Tourette's on "Russia!" during the debates.

"White hispanic" is a weasel word creation of the left, borne out of the ignorant contempt they have for conservatives. It's like the "Russia" bullshit. They think conservatives have a Pavlovian type negative reaction to Russia, so if they associate Trump with Russia, conservatives will hate him.

Likewise, they think conservatives are racist, and if they label illegals from Central America as "white hispanics", then conservatives will all of a sudden love them and desire more.

Diaz's ancestry is European. She's not from Central America.

There's Wayne Allyn Root, who had been at Columbia at the same time that Obama purported to be a student there, who was in classes which Obama would have *had* to have taken for his course of study at that time, who says he never saw Obama even once.

I've personally spoken to university professors who tell me off the record that they've been outright ordered by their administrations to give passing grades to certain protected-class students no matter how dismal the performance or attendance record.

It was probably just like that for Obama. A guaranteed "C" for the act of enrolling in the course.

Oh yes. In John's gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that he will send the Comforter (Paraclete) ie. the Holy Spirit. Muslims discovered that by changing one greek letter, Comforter becomes Prophet. So he was obviously talking about sending a prophet in the future. And who else? The prophet Mohammed of course (pbuh).

The only problem is, despite there being millions of variant spellings in thousands of New Testament manuscripts, that variant never occurs. This whole theory rests on a *hypothetical* error that even then would be kind of vague.

I've seen liberals do this tactic before. It is maddening. There was one commentator on a conservative Anglican blog, an ordained minister, and he tried to argue several times that the Church was historically pro-gay from its inception, and that only in recent decades, people calling themselves Anglican conservatives had invented homophobia and were trying to persecute the traditionally pro-gay Anglican Church. He wasn't even gay, as far as I could tell. A self hating heterosexual.

I thought the problem with CFCs was that the Chlorine gets up there and starts scavenging the ozone endlessly. Course the CFCs were heavier than air, sink to the ground and quickly react with water to release the chlorine which then rises... but nobody ever had a problem with chlorine bleach and water disinfection.

My conjecture: a shadowy leftist cabal, playing the long game, probably had a whole farm system of potential future candidates for all sorts of offices, grooming them, getting them impressive credentials, getting book contracts for them (!), promoting them, eliminating their opponents, etc., and then selecting which one went to which office.

She's Cuban and, like my green-eyed, red-haired Cuban mother, her racial ancestry is indeed Euro-white. Cuba is, of course, a Hispanic nation. Hence, white Hispanic.

Big Papi Ortiz (Dom Rep) and Yasiel Puig (Cuba) and a good chunk of MLB are black Hispanics.

Then there are the immigrants from Meso-America. They, especially the illegals, are overwhelmingly Amerindian or mestizo.

The Left constantly uses the word "Hispanic" as if it designated a race. It does not. People like La Raza (most of whose leaders are FAR more white than Indian or black) use the term so they can play a race card for themselves.

I disagree with your explanation of the use of "white Hispanic." The only time the Left uses that term is when they want to Uncle-Tom Hispanics who are conservative ---or, as in the case of George Zimmerman, when their narrative demands a white villain. You can bet that, if Zimmerman had been killed by a redneck, they would have portrayed him as a Person of Color.

I saw a crime documentary a while back in which a woman had shot her husband six times in the back. She contended she mistook him in the dark for a burglar and emptied the revolver into him in self defense. It was a single action revolver and it was pointed out to her that while she was cocking the hammer for each shot she had time to recognize who she was shooting. She said no, she fanned the hammer and hit every time. She had no prior firearm experience but beginner's luck saw her through.

The jury didn't believe her.

Wear two pairs of socks. Inner set are cotton, outer are wool (or some other thick padding). Sweat is wicked from skin, through inner sock, and skin is less subject to friction and blisters.

Never tried duct tape, but it could work if used like moleskin. The trick with moleskin is to cut a small hole in it, so that when appliedthat hole is just over the problem area of skin.

I tend to figure that if footwear consistently induces blisters, there's an underlying problem. Bad design of the boot, poor fabrication thereof, incorrect sizing, or a last that isn't a good match to the shape of the foot. Mass production sometimes doesn't work for individual humans.

There have been times when I've had to pass on buying boots (or shoes) even though I liked them, because the signs were there that they wouldn't be comfortable in the long haul.

A trick I know about but haven't ever used is choosing slightly loose oversize and then stacking socks to fill them out.

On an existing pair that couldn't be returned, I would be echoing the suggestion of moleskin at the painful spot.

376 According to the LIV I spoke to last night, here's why Trump is going to get impeached:

He sold a hotel for $91mm to someone connected to Russia and the sale wasn't at market value.
See, there was no reason for Trump to run but, the Russians had bailed him out of his bankruptcies ("No one comes back from several bankruptcies like he did.") and so, they laundered money to Trump.

And, since the Russians bailed him out of those bankruptcies, he owes them money.

He watches CNN.

No, he did not know who said, "I'll have more flexibility after the election."
No, he did not know about the uranium sale to Russia under Obama.
Or the canceling of the missile defense shield for Poland (because Russia opposed it).
Nor that Russia stands to be the only nation with the capability to build the nuclear reactors allowed to Iran under Obama's deal.
Nor that Russia's main export is petroleum--which sales were helped by Obama denying LNG exports, the pipelines and trying to ban fracking.

He also didn't want to put $100 down that Trump will NOT be impeached.

But, he was sure he was well informed.

It's worse than that, actually. Gorbachev when he was still running the Soviet Union was a key mover and shaker in the global warming scam. It is largely a communist/socialist scam to get the west to destroy its own industrial base. And Al Gore was right there with him at the very beginning.

It certainly looks to me like the Republicans threw the '08 and '12 elections.

First we had McCain, who seems like a D in R clothing. He suspended his campaign during the financial crisis to vote for a massively unpopular bank bailout. He also said, "You have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency." Who in the entire history of politics has ever said anything like that about their opponent?

Then there was Romney, who most of the base couldn't stand, and was almost a caricature of an Eeevil Capitalist against Obama's class warfare rhetoric. The Republicans may as well have run Scrooge McDuck or the Monopoly Man.

Obama won in '08 because of six states with a total of around 200,000 votes. 10,000 here, 25,000 there, etc.

If McCain could have flipped that tiny amount he would have won an Electoral College victory - which is the one that matters -- not popular votes. This stuff isn't rocket science... it's political science.
