Thread before the Gardening Thread: Feeling Good with Other People's Money (State Edition) [KT]

gg-bridge-12-2006.jpg

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Great. It looks like the State of California is bailing out Tesla. "Tesla will soon hit the limit of the federal tax rebates . . . . "

It's not like things are going well enough in California that the government can afford to bail out billionaires. Could this be a case of escapism, as suggesting by VDH? State government distracting itself from its real problems?

Was it here that I first read that Elon Musk is today's P.T. Barnum? Great showman. Great at suckering folks into giving him money, too. But in the case of Barnum, it was generally their own money.

And how about those politicians in Illinois? I don't think their state finances are in the best shape. But they evidently have a lot of faith in the finances of their citizens:

Part of the reason the United States has the highest health costs of any nation is because of the added costs of onerous government regulation. Illinois, for example, lists 18 pages of required benefits for private insurance plans that covers everything from alcoholism to infertility, all at government-mandated levels, with high compliance costs added in. Ironically, in contrast, the Canadian single-payer system offers at most limited coverage for mental care, dental care, eye care, prescription drugs, and a whole lot more.

What are your state officials doing to feel good at your expense?

Are you doing something to feel good at your own expense this weekend?

8 I like the title "Thread Before the Gardening Thread". "Thread Beneath the Gardening Thread" always seemed so othering, like some insensitive bigot was gardensplaining that we people of non-garden are lesser human beings. It was really triggering to me, and led to panic attacks and overconsumption of pancakes. So glad I don't have to sue.

State and federal guaranteed(?) loans back in '09-'10 to the former GM plant in Newport, DE to convert it to an electric car manufacturing facility run by Fiskars. Did not come to pass, of course, and yet no accounting of who, what, where, when and why has never been forthcoming.

19 Good morning fellow morons!!

I hope you are all having a great weekend!!!

Living in Virginia, there is plenty that is done with tax money for other people's benefit, but I think my favorite poor spending is the recently incarcerated mayor of City of Fairfax's removal of low income housing to build luxury townhomes and condos to increase tax revenues in order to pay for an influx of illegals and Syrian refugees.

Oh, and he was incarcerated for selling meth for sex at a gay orgy.

But he's a Democrat, so it's totally okay.

ugh. I don't think they're doing it to "feel good". I'm suspicious and think that kickbacks may be involved.

We make police officers wear body cams. I think we need to force politicians to wear body cams and mikes 24/7. We could abolish maybe 10 federal agencies and use the savings to start an ethics compliance agency, whose job it would be to monitor financial transactions of all politicians, and post them on a website where anyone could see them.

30 The asshats in Seattle rammed through Regional Transit III which taxes car owners in 4 counties to pay for a rail system expansion that, you guessed it, helps Seattle. The current transit plan supports about 1% of all commuters.
And Seattle socialists just love their own version of The Dig, already years behind and billions over cost.

A recent recommendation from a "blue ribbon panel" has been implemented whereby anybody receiving prescription opiates can no longer have them prescribed by their PCP, but must instead go through a "pain management clinic". I'll bet there is a niche market out there for programmers who can construct phony modelling software for people like Elon Musk or Michael E. And they're so byzantine, like Andrew Fastow's accounting books, that no one bothers to find out what is actually going on.

Nice! I'm a few hundred miles away from the path of totality but have no plans to travel. If I was going to go, I should have made plans and booked reservations about a year ago.

It's a crapshoot, though, because it could turn out to be cloudy on eclipse day. Still, I'm sure it's worth making the effort.

I remember the 1994 annular eclipse that went across the US. Where I am, it was about 90% partial, so the sun was a thin crescent. The temperature dropped noticeably around the time of maximum eclipse.

Meanwhile, the subways, which are under his control are in desperate need of repair and improvements which he and other feckless Dems have put off.
On top of that, he's renaming the new TapanZee bridge after Cuomo the elder. Who said that if they wanted anything named after him, he'd only want it to be a small stickball field off an alley in Queens somewhere.

With all the "cultural enrichment" nowadays, I won't be surprised at all if I see news stories about animal or human sacrifices.

I still can't get over how the MSM calls lunar eclipses "blood moons". That has only happened in the last few years, and sounds like something out of the Middle Ages.

When I was a kid, they were called "lunar eclipses". I never ever heard the phrase "blood moon".

83 Yes of course simple repeal of O-care will not "fix" the pre-existing conditions (heh) that afflicted it prior to 2010.

However, it could potentially relieve a very large minority (individual market) that has been devastated, instantly, by the idiocy. It is pretty clear almost everyone here is in the group market, where costs have pretty much continued to rise at the previous rate. Everyone whose premiums increased 400%, overnight, raise their hands. Thought so.

So it's almost easy to consider it all an abstract political exercise. But it isn't, for 15% of the market.

Speaking of political exercise, it would of course also be a great political step forward to repeal O-care. Not just as a repudiation/humiliation of Obama and most Dems, but to de-mystify it all. Nothing magic about "entitlements" that nobody likes, only a small number receive, and which are connected to massive injury to a larger number.

But repeal requires more than the reconciliation bill - though that would be a great start.

One troubling thing is the administration's passivity. Why HHS didn't immediately issue waivers under the secretary's sweeping authority - broader than those already in place, basically waive as much of the law as he can - I don't understand.

Things like Gender roles... Gay Men's Affectations... wanting property... wanting your progeny to succeed... these things cross all cultural boundaries...

Now, you CAN overcome this base programming through intellect, but will then be unhappy... and not even know WHY (ever met a happy Feminist?)... because deep down, you feel something is wrong... something is missing... 147 First step might be to fire Rosenstein (dep. AG). His disastrous judgment created the Mueller idiocy - and it does not appear he is exercising any supervision.

Look at the one-page letter creating the Mueller abomination. One sentence of substance - connections between Trump campaign and Russian govt., and things arising "directly" from such an investigation.

That's a very, very narrow mandate. When Mueller strays from it, as it appears he already has, there is no reason that vicious jaw-boning from the WH, and yanks on the reins from Rosenstein, can not happen.

I think Andy McCarthy (real expert, poor judge of character with his law enforcement associates, based on history) has been all over this. Mueller is probably already technically in violation of the federal law that authorizes his sort of activity.

Of course having a sentient GOP in Congress would help - they could/should be loudly eviscerating this absurd "Russia" nonsense non-stop, and humiliating all who beclown themselves with it.

Good reason to do it. While they are undergoing another hyperbolic fit he can revoke another 60 stupid regulations.

It would also be a good lesson for the media - you hyperventilated up to 11 already so there is nowhere "more" outrageous to go. Should have thought that through.

I think with the moon it's the angle in the sky that allows certain surface area to reflect greater or lesser amounts.

172 OH, I agree 100%. We are programmed at a genetic level with certain fundamental things (whether by God or evolution does not matter, programming is there).

...

Now, you CAN overcome this base programming through intellect, but will then be unhappy... and not even know WHY (ever met a happy Feminist?)... because deep down, you feel something is wrong... something is missing... (thus, all the older Feminists who complain they can't find a REAL Man /facepalm)...

I personally go with evolution, but to be fair to Judeo-Christianity, I think they'd say people are programmed by the devil by default, not God.

I would only try to overcome the programming if I thought it was violating a moral boundary. Sometimes I'm so angry I put empty beer bottles in a plastic bag and smash them with a wrench - I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But I'd never assault a liberal with a bikelock unless they were physically attacking me first.

No, the Earth does not block sunlight to create the darkened areas on the moon during routine phases of the moon. See this article and animations therein.

Moon phases are because we can see part of the moon's "dayside" and part of the "night side". Full moon is we see only the day side. New moon is only the night side.

Lunar eclipses are during a full moon phase, but the moon is in the earth's shadow. Sun, earth and moon are in a straight line only once in a while.

176 "Yesterday on Tucker the guest said the opposite-- that it was a very wide manadate the could potentially go anywhere. "

I argued over this here back at the time of Mueller's appointment. Statute used, and Rosenstein's wording, says narrow. Someone else said Mueller would nonetheless read it broadly and who was going to stop him.

The core of Mueller's mandate is Russian Hacking. If he just accepts the conclusions of 17 agencies, and doesn't bother to ask questions like who gave the order to destroy the DNC server, it'll be clear that Mueller is an anti-American scumbag like Comey and Rhodes and should be treated as such. These people are playing with fire.

I'm not an astronomer, but from what I remember learning in school, one half of the moon is always lit by the sun, just like the Earth is. The moon also gradually shifts position in relation to the Earth due to its orbit. So when it's nighttime on Earth, we gradually see more or less of the light side of the moon.

The normal phases of the moon happen because of the angle to our line of sight. Only part of the moon is illuminated by the sun.

Lunar eclipses happen during full moon when it is partially or totally covered by the Earth's shadow. Most full moons don't cross the Earth's shadow.

Mueller can be fired?

I believe Trump would be (at least) his boss's boss's boss.
Trump could summon Mueller and explain in front of a number of key persons he is under executive privilege in the meeting, and all topics discussed are TS NOFORN, and will be transcribed.
Down to the meat - discuss one narrow small alleged "Russia hacked the election" act and that, if true, may be a covert act of war... hence the TS NOFORN... tell Mueller to report his progress on investigating this one narrow issue... of which he will have nothing. Send Mueller forth to investigate and report back in one week.

Point that other attendees are federal counter intel who have been assigned to ensure no leaks, rinse and repeat every week.... until their is a leak or Mueller quits (first time he fails to report actual progress).

182 >>Why are the phases of the moon (new, crescent, half whatever) not called partial eclipses? It's the earth blocking the sunlight yes? Or am I way off in left field somewhere?

I think it has to do with the angle of the moon in relation to the earth. The moon is rarely in complete alignment with the earth, its a few degrees off. If it were in alignment all the time we would have an eclipse every month.

It is only when it does line up perfectly between the earth and the sun that we get an actual eclipse.

________

It's the angle of sun, moon and earth.

Best way to truly experience what's going on is to set up a model with a flashlight (sun) and something round (moon). You, as the observer, are on earth.

In a dark room, shine the flashlight at the grapefruit at various angles, and take note of what part of the grapefruit you see. These are pretty much the phases of the moon.

189 Go look up the Rosenstein memo creating Mueller's operation. That is *not* a broad mandate - if read, you know, in English, in its plain common sense meaning.

Something selectively not done in judicial circles these days (thus undermining our entire system of laws) - but it's very clear.

Teh Donald's twatter feed is amusing today.

But it mostly reminds me (not that I need to be reminded) of how desperately inadequate the *offense* part of WH comms strategy is. You need more than just the president with his novel outlet - you need coordinated yakking from the entire administration.

What's this about the NYT compromising operations aimed at the ISIS chief? If true, a very yuuuuge deal (though the NYT has long been comfortable with aiding murderous, genocidal, insane terrorists - including those who attack NYC - if they think they can damage a president they don't like).

Of course, again, the near-total silence of the GOP on so many of these outrages is a major problem.

194 @150 "Let's work backwards"

Good point. It's something someone somewhere needs to work out.

The GOP majority has not embraced the anti-establishment revolution. I'm not sure if they think they can simply wait out Trump's 4 years, but they are woefully ignorant if they think Trump is the revolution. He is just the first wave. A wave that includes blue collar dems in the rust belt that we need to cultivate.

Where do we go from here? Do we ride GOPe coat rails in an uneasy alliance, do we take over and reform the Party, do we start our own?

I think it may be better to maintain a "movement" rather than get bogged down with Ds and Rs. And is there *anything* we agree with Bernie supports on other than hating the Establishment Party (E)?

I don't know enough to have a strong opinion on any of this, but I think we need to start brainstorming SOON and start organizing for what comes after Trump.

We have a lot of momentum, this may be the last grasp for us. And you can be certain that if we don't redouble, McConnell Pelosi et al will reverse all of our gains.

218 Apparently, according to Hindu custom, some dude named Rahu, a demonic sort, snuck into Vishnu's liquor cabinet and drank the nectar of the gods. Vishnu cut off Rahu's head and tossed it into the sky where it obliterated the sun.

I don't even want to think about what would have happened if Rahu had stayed out past curfew.

231 Does this help. The Moon needs to be lit by the Sun, it has no light itself. The Moon orbits Earth. When the Moon is behind Earth- so it's Sun--Earth--Moon, the Moon is fully lit from our perspective. When the Moon is in front of Earth, so it's Sun--Moon--Earth, the Moon isn't lit at all.

When it's Sun--Earth--Moon in perfect alignment, it's a Lunar eclipse because Earth blocks out all the Sun's light which would otherwise light up the Moon.

I think that's exactly correct.

Those who consider themselves "born to rule" have always hated the United States. This was the first country in history that didn't allow a hereditary nobility, and free-market capitalism gave low-born people the opportunity to rise to the limits of their intelligence, ability, and work ethic. This created the middle class, which is independent, relatively prosperous, and has no need or desire to be "ruled".

That made the nobility look bad, and they have sought to destroy America for the last 200 years or so, and return to the proper order of nobility and peasantry. "Marxism" and "Progressivism" are their tools for doing so.

I've seen this in the corporate world. Management company comes in to assist ailing company. They manipulate/re-interpret/adulterate numbers until losses look like profits.

They flood the work force with lower paid less qualified personnel creating an unhappy work environment while producing a lesser product/service than before they arrived.

It happens before original cos very eyes and they believe in it until the day they go bankrupt.

239 Yeah, watched last night's ONT feud unfold in horrified disbelief. Not gonna take sides. However, the situation itself really kind of took sides.

Apparently one cannot ignore or delete emails one doesn't like or have use for (funny, I ignore/delete 90% of all emails, as do many, cuz spam/scams/etc).

And this means that one must go on an investigatory jihad against various other commenters, and not read their comments/answers properly, and then engage in junior high snark and verbal wrasslin' with everyone who are targets of your inquisition.

First time I've ever commented on comment section drama. I ordinarily just skip it, so couldn't really comment anyway. But last night was car-wreck-can't-look-away sort of stuff.

Thus concludes my first and only comment on the topic. Historic and unprecedented, in its own humble way.

Not 'woke' to twatter and only see what is quoted, but the inconsistency and passivity is from the top. NY libs cannot truly imagine not using government, so unless they can overcome the everyone will die publicity, they are at a disadvantage unless they (he) can change the focus. Price is an MD and good in a lot of ways, but he has become part of the basic flaw in reasoning -- that the great and good government can 'fix' anything. Posted by: rhomboid at July 22, 2017 12:35 PM (iynDC)

_______________

Back in circa 2003-2004, the GOP went silent as the Left/Dem/Media purposefully sabotaged the Iraq war effort. I was genuinely perplexed over the next 4 years as to why there was no pushback from "my" party against the steady stream of enemy-coddling narratives. In time, the talking points emanating out of the DNC - and dutifully reported and reinforced ad naseum by the MSM - nearly overlapped perfectly with the propaganda being pushed by al-Qaeda in Iraq. The GOP said nothing. I couldn't understand it.

Until I did: The GOP doesn't mean what they tell their constituents. They are lying to us. It's all one big criminal conspiracy that is hurtling our great country into the grips of socialism and tyranny. I went from being perplexed and angry to being utterly depressed. And angry. And then came along Donald Trump. And as strange as it was, it was he, and his full-throated supporters, that gave me back some hope.

And while Trump has been a stunningly unexpected (if partial/temporary?) change of course, in many respects, the electorate's pathetic and sheepish behavior paralleling that of the pathetic GOP has permanently changed my assessment of the country.

And note that almost the entire false framework created by the MSM, and the Dems and the whole global "elite" info-complex, about the issue in question has been internalized by Americans, including "conservatives". You can find it here every day. There was a thread not long ago that was as stunning in the dumbassery of the comments as anything you'd find at DailyKos.

Few years back I had a debate with some metrosexual punk about Obamacare. Positions were backed by a $100 bet. He lost and, like a bitch, donated my winnings in my name to a charity that handles mental health issues for vets. What a sore loser.

Caught up with him 6 months later at a DC bar. Called up 3 of my Marines built like linebackers. Challenged him to "take this outside". There's another thing in play here as well, thanks to personality theory.

There are a lot of people who do not want to make decisions. Any decisions. In the MBTI, they're called Perceivers. They want others to do it for them. If the other is Uncle Sam, that's OK. That makes their life better. So really, serfdom suits them, as long as they have their iphone, cable and xbox.

Then add in those who simply do not want to work, and you have a society that's ripe for takeover.

My secondary theory is that the majority of the alpha males came to the US before wwI. The alpha males that stayed had their gene pool eliminated in the two world wars. That's why we're in better shape than western europe.

Do they do it purposely so they can have a loss on their books? Is that why they destroy a decent company? Or is it something like "money laundering?"

Internalized to an almost unbelievable degree. Attempting to have a fact-based conversation with nearly anyone, about what happened less than 15 years ago, seems impossible. Frustrating to the point that it simply is not worth it. Which, of course, was one of the main motivations behind the entire information/dis-information campaign to begin with.

The entire situation truly shone a light for me on the power of the corporate media and their anti-American/anti-Western motivations.

One of the reasons I initially resisted the very idea of PDT being the GOP nominee was because of his quick dismissals of the Iraq war goals. In time, and perhaps I was only seeing what I wanted to see, I came to accept that this was his brilliant way of escaping the Dem/MSM traps that had worked so successfully while paying only a small price with the GOP constituency who had had the false narratives drummed into their heads so often that they simply wanted to move on.

.I disagree. Europe and the United Kingdom specifically used foreign lands to dump their undesirables. The Americas and Australia were considered by Europe to be worthless pieces of land filled with savages and aborigines.

They detested the "Colonies" and thought that Africa was where the future would be concentrated. Most of Europe poured vast sums into expeditions and colonies, carving up Africa between themselves starting in the mid 1800's and they continued it through WWII in hopes of cashing in big time at some point.

Heck even hitler thought it would be a good idea to kick the British out of North Africa to help out his buddy and gain some good oil fields without having to go through Russia.

Speaking of: I'm of the opinion that National Review has been co-opted by the Left. It was a natural target. I'm further of the opinion that the good people of Powerline (Heyward and Johnson minus Mirgenoff - get rid of that guy!), rather than being co-opted, are often simply too far in the weeds to see the bigger picture. I used to spend a whole lot of time reading and worrying about wonkish subjects such as Continuing Resolutions until I realized that it truly was all Kabuki - and that the subjects that really mattered were outside of what was allowed to be discussed on "conservative" sites.

342 My Dad, Chuck Missler, Carl Sagan and Alfred Einstein could spend six hours explaining to me, personally, the how's and why's of one surface moon visibility world wide. I'd still not get it. My Dad, who was among the Best of the Best, explained time travel theory to me FFS. A lot. And never said, "This again? You still don't get it?" I loved those physics seminars and with Dad. The beauty of it is that I kind of understood it, kind of felt it, while it was being spoken and explained. You know? And it is a mystery now. All of it. It became a mystery within ten minutes of the end of his explanations/seminars. The only way I could approach that level of knowledge was when it was actively spoken about. It drove a deep admiration and respect for my Dad into me. At times, I realized that I wanted so bad to be able to explain things like that to my children. I simply can't. It makes me cry. And I rarely cry.

All that being said, I can't grasp the how's and why's of only being able to see the man in the moon from earth, and never the other side. From anywhere on earth ever. And I never asked my Dad about it.

I miss my Dad. I wish I'd have asked him about this simple one, too.

Hell, I can't tell my kids why the sky is blue! Asked and answered hundreds of times. But I do know that 2+2=4.

Wait, maybe not. Hey Dad? How did that one go?

Basically the
stereotypical shape of a Northern European's head was thought to be

418 FTR, we don't consider jarhead to be a slur. We call them squids, although I don't know if that offends them.

There really isn't as much acrimony or envy between Navy and Marines. One, we are a department of the Navy, 2) combined arms - there is no sweeter sound to Marine Infantry than Naval CAS arriving on station.

But most relevant 3) Navy Corpsemen. We have them attached to every Company. They don't go through our training but still manage to hang in there with us. And when shit hits the fan, there they are out on the front lines skylining themselves with an IV bag. That takes balls.

So Marines have a great deal of love and respect for Navy, despite how much we tease them.

You wonder why I want to move to Pensacola? Housing there is 66, based on 100 as the national average. Outside of DC (I'm 25 miles from the WH as the crow flies), that number is 244.

Yep, I'm a soon-to-be economic refugee, and glad I have the freedom to relocate. Just gotta figure out how to do it.

426 We have a friend who is an AD (they got tossed off
campus). He has no children, and is quite successful. He was going to
leave the college a large chunk of his estate, but they ignored his
polite questions for years.

So some charity in Northern NJ is going to get a big chunk of money when he dies, and Dartmouth will be the loser.

That is the only way to get their attention.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 22, 2017 02:50 PM (wYseH)

Dartmouth is already a big loser IMHO. But good for him.
AD shouldn't have been thrown off.
And when I referred to the alums up there, I meant the old-school.
I ordered hubby Indian head Dartmouth t-shirts online, since they won't sell them in Hanover. I'm using the last one to clean my gun.

I think the danger in that plan is that the generation of SJWs that they are pumping out of Hanover are not going to be the movers and shakers that the previous 200+ years of grads were.

They won't be making seven and eight figure salaries, and won't be donating to the school, because it will not have captured their hearts the way it did before.

Problem is they have such large endowments they are almost beyond caring. Princeton has an endowment of over $20 billion, thats billion with a "b". Harvard is almost $40 billion.

The Ivies have so much money that they are offering almost free tuition to many of their students now. Between the endowments and the government money they all get they don't even need alumni donations anymore.

I joined the military in large part to honor the man and family and friends of the man who saved my Dad's life in combat circa 1966 Vietnam. Hearing about it was an inexsplicable moment in our relationship. Our Mom didn't even know that story. For some reason, he shared it with me one night. He even told me the man's name. Sadly, I've failed to remember it. Gotta make a pilgrimage to the wall some day. I owe them all. Especially one of them. I owe him everything. I wouldn't have been born.

LOL. Why not just come out and say that dress makes you look like an ewok?

We had a group around the campfire at an SCA event (Pennsic). Hours of drinking and fun. When we finally got back to the tent, my wife gave me the lowdown on a spat between women that went right over the conversation. Like a frequency of tone and nuance that went undetected to all make ears.

453 "Not sure why I'm making that public"

No don't be embarrassed or shy about it . My reasons were sillier and more idealistic than most. Don't tell anyone but:

1) to defend Arthur's Dream that Might can be channelled for Right. I majored in Englsh Lit, with a double in Dramatic Sentimentalism. That recruiting commercial with the Knights on the chessboard? Not fair. Like offering Scarlett Johansson to a 16 year old male.

2 ) I was head over heels in love with a soulmate who "loved me like a brother". I want through school a year and half behind my peers, so very socially retarded (and wimpy). I knew I had no chance of winning her unless I became a Real Man. Did I mention that double major in Dramatic Sentimentalism?

But wait, there is MOAR! The all-time stupid reason for joining the United States Marines.....

I mumble muble thought there would be mumble lots of fellow mumble mumble D&D players to run campaigns with.

And there were. And it was a blast. And other than choosing my wife, joining the Marines was the best move I ever made in my life.

But yah, when I ever get too full of myself on these boards, feel free to remind me "Dude, you became a Marine Infantryman to level up your Psionic Mage. Sit the F down"

457 VD Hanson has a solid take on all this, as he saw it from his front porch. The migrant workers wanted escape from their narco-state, and that was "commoditized" into a cheap labor base with health care costs subsidized by government.

Even if the workers are "legit" thanks to the HI-A (and B) legal accommodations, the community they live in seems to escape most of our laws, sucks up welfare, and sends much of the profit to build community back to their (gov' abused) relatives in other countries. (even as our own workers were told they deserve free stuff without work ... so yeah of course it is hard to find good American labor).

And the easy money game lets the tech bubble grow and grow as America invests and gets zero interest if they don't play the stock game. So Amazon was enabled by terrible monetary policy, that let them drive brick and mortar business out of business. Amazon lost money on every sale for like 20 years (and still have minimal profit) but were propped up by they gov policy driven market bubbles. (zero interest rate policy for 8 years, $4T in QE ... skyrocketed trade deficits ... amazing it has not collapsed)

Now we will send middle America to die fighting, and/or give in to enemies to maintain the globalist market bubbles. And all these new dotcom oligarchs were propped up by the billionaires that made their money off the easy money market manipulation. Pay to play writ large. All the new billionaires seems to be in the Soros pocket, all far left fascists with a smiley face. Individual liberty is "white supremacy" to these sellouts.

they need an intervention ... preferably the Divine kind.
