EMT 07/22/17

EMT amongst yourselves. Try not to spill coffee in the hut, and mind your head around the Storm trooper wind chimes. Did anyone else notice those cute fuzzy ewoks were about to eat Han, and did eat some troopers?

But they're the good guys. Mmhmm.

Flying cheapest of the cheap on Spirit. At least they got me on next flight no extra charges. Just have to wait 4 hours.

At least its not the apple store where you can't just walk in, you need to make an appointment. I stopped bothering going to the Verizon store after they annoyed me, and now handle it all on their website. You can probably find out if it comes in blue there too.

33 I've found it best to avoid the nightwalkers altogether. I do not understand what goes on there at all.

These people bitch and fight and scream and call each other names all night long, and then one of 'em called for me to be banned one night just because they didn't like a limerick I posted. There were no banned words or personal attacks or anything of the sort in said limerick. The person just didn't like it. And called for me to be banned. For a limerick. While they all bitch and fight and scream and call each other names all night.

I don't get it. So I just hang with the daywalkers.

I saw that. That's disappointing.

Powered Dragon landings are optional for Earth, but they're necessary for Mars.

But on the other hand, the original plan for recovery of Falcon 9 first stages was to parachute them into the ocean. They tried that two or three times, and didn't come close to succeeding.

So Plan B was powered landings, which have been spectacularly successful.

SpaceX is nothing if not innovative and resourceful. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

67 Latest update on the repairs to stately VIA Manor.

Found a source for about 500 square foot of salvaged flooring that matches our perfectly.

And unlike most cases where you find salvaged hardwood flooring, this has never been resanded, or resurfaced in its life. So it is of a uniform and original thickness of 3/4 inch, with no dips or wear valleys in it.

So, instead of simply replacing the stained section of the Dining Room floor, I think I am gonna replace the entire room worth in one single shot.

Damn, this is some good looking flooring.

96 "Not sure I was real wood tho. The bedrooms all have real wood floors."

Yes, the entire house, except for the kitchen and bathroom is red oak tongue and groove 2 1/4x 3/4 flooring. Interestingly, the deck, or floor of the bay window was originally floored in the same material, as the builder simply used the cut off sections from flooring the house to cover the bay window deck. As all the homes were built between the late thirties, and the fifties, most of the bay window decks in the community have been damaged by overfilled window plants, sixty years of exposure to harsh sunlight, and other things which have ruined the wood. And in most cases, the deck is torn out and replaced with various other coverings which happen to be in vogue during the time that the owner decided to take corrective action.

I think that stately VIA Manor is probably the only one which has a completely rebuilt deck using original red oak. Out of everything which I have done around here, that is my pride and joy.

There are a lot of energy efficiency advances that took place in the last thirty years or so, that make a newer home more attractive.

But some of the new construction technics leave me a little bit unimpressed.

And the older homes, if taken care of, can hold their own on comfort.

Baltimore just went through two days of hot and humid weather, with temps in the high nineties, and heat indexes in the mid 100's.

So in order to capture a reduction in the electric bill, I turned the a/c off at 11:00am both days.

Last night, at 7:30pm, I turned the a/c back on when the house reached 76 degrees inside..

I don't think I am gonna find new construction that has the same solid feel as the old homes do.

Here's how I handle the situation...

I put every job on a separate 3 X 5 card like
Wash car
Cut grass
Fix something
on and on until I have a pile of cards.

Then I make two piles, stuff I definitely don't feel like doing and stuff maybe I feel like doing. Then I search through those cards until I find 'something' I feel like doing.

Just having a list of to-do items on a sheet of paper doesn't cut it. They all look equally full of suck.

There is a certain love of my life who tends to overlook the storage and use capacity of a 600 SF finished basement, and a 600 SF attic, which is completely floored, with pull down stairs for access.

172 I think Sessions is going to get changed out.

The WaPo story is probably made up. It is anonymous people saying anonymous things but having your boss get surprised is bad.

So do I. While I think AG Sessions shouldn't have recused himself with regard to the Russian BS, Trump keep tweeting and yapping which made an impossible situation worse.

Now that is the truth. I have a 1200 sq ft shop, 800 sq ft storage building,1500 sq ft office, and it's all jammed packed with stuff. I'm convinced I could fill a 10k sqft warehouse within 6 months. No I'm not a hoarder in just have a lot of important stuff, like bits of metal and wood that I will need someday.

179 "The more space you have the more stuff you seem to accumulate"

"Stuff" has a lot of the same physical properties as a gas does.

Put it in a container...it fills it.

Move it to a larger container, it expands to fill the new container

Move it to a smaller container, and it fills it.
And the pressure goes up.

No matter what size your home is...your "Stuff" will expand to fill it.

182 Colin, I just upgraded from exactly that, flip phone at $30 a month to fancy smarty phone that doesn't come in blue.

It's too late for me, but there is still hope for you.

Despair, but do not take my path.

It's not a phone. It's a computer with a phone app. As a former Marine who appreciates the value of clear comms, it sucks. Example:

My friend is messed up, car dead on side of road, about to freeze to death. I'm racing in my car towards his last known pos, trying to get him to identify key landmarks before his cellphone dies. Driving and texting him but every time I try some other stupid button on phone takes me to another screen. Like trying to juggle geese without wrecking into a telephone pole.

The kicker? I finally get back to him, and right between me dodging a semi and middle of text trying to get what last street he saw, a pop up as - "would you like to update to the newest version of chrome?"

Also, the phone tattles on you.

And that pic of the redhead you thought you deleted? Guess again.

So be happy. Soon as my data is used I'm smashing this phone with a hammer and going back to the no frills flip phone.

Comms is your most effective weapon. They MUST be reliable. I don't care if it can 3D hologram that Black Widow hottie, if it can't be depended on for clear comms it's trash.

Tru dat! When we moved from Texas to CO we packed everything we wanted in a POD container or the two cars. We told the kids they could rummage what was left, then whatever was left over went to goodwill or the dump. 1 800 got junk filled a dump truck.

185 Thought about the Vegas momee. Since I'm making half of what I have for the past 12 years, may not be feasible. Anyone know what hotel? I can get a flight for 80 but with an additional 60 for taxes and fees. And that is before paying for luggage. 35 each way. Fuck, I hate being broke. A tax break would really be nice.

Did you ever see that video of a monkey f**king a frog to death? That's every internet argument. Bystanders can't look away. Everyone loses.

I was at dinner with my wife years ago listening to a guy at a nearby table go on and on about his $60 disagreement with Comcast - exactly what everyone wants to hear over dinner - and I had an idea for an advice column: Am I The Asshole?

Maybe that guy was in the right. Maybe he was in the wrong. Pretty sure nobody who could hear him cared at all. That's also every internet argument ever. Get some sleep. Have a great day. Cheers.

213 Back in 2012, I reluctantly decided to join the 21st century and bought my first cell phone. It's a cheapo no-frills TracFone I got at WalMart for $12. It costs me about $44 every time I buy time, which I do 2-3 times a year.

I can talk on it, and text, and it has a calendar and an alarm clock and a calculator. A year later, I bought one for my Mom -- got one step up from the cheapest thing available, and it has a camera and some other features. She hardly ever uses it, but when she needs a cell phone, it's in her purse.

FWIW, I recommend TracFone to anyone looking to downgrade but still wants basic, reliable service.
