Ace of Spades Pet Thread

petthread abvove fold.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Sneak a beverage past that vicious guard dog above and enjoy!

*****

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Ever wonder how the dogs on Cops know how to get the bad guy?

Green with envy? No just a green puppy.

Breaking and entering, Goat style.

A bird with rhythm.

A cat with ambition.

Here's a link from our pal J&B K, about Dog Flu.

I'll be honest with you. Your humble Cob doesn't let his dogs interact with strange dogs. Going on 2 years ago, we had to kennel our dogs. They have all their vaccinations plus they had the kennel cough vaccination. Guess what? Yes, 2 of the 3 came down with it and then unbeknownst to us they gave it to Mid-Kid's dog.

The kennel had no idea they had taken in an infected dog.

Now a new flu for dogs? Great. Will I give my dogs the vaccine? Probably not. I don't get flu shots either.

It looks like you may be running short of contributors, so I will come out of lurking just this once. I have been reading Ace of Spades for years.....

Anyway, I am sending you pictures of our old kitty and less old kitty .

(Photo 1) This is Natasha. And no, this isn't allowed, but a camera was handy so I took this before the usual screaming and flailing about.

(Photo 2)Nikki, the hated interloper at 3 months old. We tried Feliway, to no avail. Engaged a kitty shrink who prescribed kitty Prozac for the crank, which has kept the fisticuffs to an acceptable level. And it helps that she now dwarfs Natasha.

I don't know how you use these, so I am sending them as attachments, too.

Pets are a nice break from politics!

Thanks Jane!!!!

Chekov_AoSHQ.jpg

Moron Wolfus Aurelius here. These are my two furry roommates, aka thugs in fur coats. The big black fellow is Wolf, aka Wolfus Aurelius (whence my screen name); the white-and-black miniature panda is Chekov, a Siberian. I'd had Chekov for a year when I rescued Wolf, a year-old cat who'd been abandoned. Normally there are scuffles and difficulties when introducing two unrelated cats, especially males. Not in this case. They walked around each other warily, but didn't hiss or growl. In an hour, I found them sitting in the window together, watching birds. Now they sleep together and groom each other. (One of these days I'm going to come home and find them braiding each other's tails and watching "Glee"!)

Sounds like they have found quite the home!

Love the pet feature every Saturday. I am mostly a lurker, but occasionally post as "Jen Westin". Prefer to keep my real name private, should you post this.

Here are our two youngest cats, Cici (white) and Liberty (black), who are turning 3 years old this weekend. On the Fourth of July in 2014, my neighbor found Cici and Liberty, along with their three siblings, sealed in a bucket next to a bike bath. They were just a couple of days old, as they still had their umbilical cords attached. We took care of them for the first couple of days while our neighbor went out of town, and miraculously, all five kittens survived. My neighbor raised them after that, and found homes for all of them. We decided originally to adopt only Cici, but she and Liberty did everything together, and we did not want to separate them. My husband and I are convinced that the two of them believe I am their mother, as they follow me everywhere I go. Both cats are full of personality and very affectionate, and have been a wonderful addition to our home.

Hi, I've been lurking for years but never commented. I always love the pet thread. I was startled today to see Tessa, a Devon Rex with the Tetralogy of Fallot.

My ferret Molly, pictured above, has the same condition. She has made it (somehow) to the advanced age of six years, nine months. As Brandon said of Tessa, the prognosis is dismal, but Molly's experiencing better living through chemistry. Most days she gets around and has a pretty comfortable ferret life. I hope Brandon's Tessa has as good a life as Molly. -Lee

So, you're asking why so many cats today? We post the photos as they come in. Seems there was an avalanche of cat photos. Mix and match? Perhaps. Maybe. You never know.

A great looking group of PetMorons. Thanks for stopping by this Summer afternoon. If you have photos, tips, stories or something else pet related. Please submit to us here at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Here's hoping you have a great week!!

5 Hi, pet threadies!

My doggie would most definitely like to be where that doggie is, in the ice.

Finding the cats and dog in odd places these 100° days - obviously seeking out where shade and cool concrete bring some relief.

10 Mentioned earlier this week that our 2 year old beagle was being treated for an environmental allergen or an infection after a stay at the kennel.
Eventually found out that at least 3 other dogs also had the same symptoms. The next 2 dogs that the vet saw had bloodwork done. Ours couldn't be tested because she was already in the midst of treatment.
Found out Thursday that it was indeed a bacterial infection. Mycoplasma.
After 7 days on antibiotics she no longer has the symptoms but should be kept away from other animals for 10 more days.
I was very worried that it was the Korean flu.

11 That last pic of the boy and his dog...

We lived in a Chicago apartment until our kids were 12, 9, and 9. Never had a pet in all that time. They asked for a dog and I replied, who will walk the dog when it's sub-zero temperatures and three feet of snow outside? (I knew the answer: me!)

After we moved to rural Oklahoma we had lots of cats and several dogs, but that just reinforces my regret we didn't have pets for the kids when they were little. Could've at least had a cat, although it would have had to be an inside-always cat.

And I've often said, if I'd only known when the kids were little what our dog taught me about "parenting," I would've been a better dad.

Twice, I've seen passersby go over to her, checking to see if she's dead. She moves when they get close enough. This is the cat that also likes to hide and ambush the other animals as they walk by.

Many years ago we had friends who kennelled their dog, a dachshund IIRC. It dug its way out from under the fence at the kennel.
They had a few hours of anxiety until they found it. I can't imagine a dog like that would run very far.

Certainly not very fast.

When I was living in Boston, I used to take my Golden to the Boston Common some Saturdays. There used to be a dachshund group that would meet there every Saturday and let them play together.

You want to see something funny, watch 30-40 dachshunds playing together.

36 A little flycatcher bird took up nesting under our patio umbrella a few weeks ago. I consider her my pet for a few weeks as she raises her brood. she is clean and fastidious, but we can't use the patio right now, a small inconvenience.

This morning we woke up, and she, or perhaps her mate, was in our bedroom, setting on the drapery rod.

We opened all the doors and windows, she left quickly.

She's still tending her nest so no harm no fowl. Oops, foul. Heh.

She likes us. But I can't figure out how she got in.

Strange morning, as when we opened the front door, there was a giant fish head on the threashhold.

Birds. Very odd day.

Our dog was vaccinated for H3N2 last April

He caught H3N8 at the kennel over July 4th

The hospital bill was $6,600

Cremation another $100

Posted by: Northernlurker, Phillips screwdriver of the gods at July 22, 2017 03:34

We had a dog that was an escape artist, Bozo. He was part blue heeler/coon hound and part ? (garbage eater passing thru).

Boarded him once at a new kennel that had the dogs in pegs w/ 8 ft high chain link fence w/ open space between the fence and ceiling. One morn they came to open up and Bozo was at the front door barking and not wanting to let them in. Door to his cage was still locked, he'd climbed that dang fence!

Needless to say we didn't think he was welcome to return and never used them again.

73 Another fine phalanx of furry friends!

For some odd reason I've noticed over the last few years a large number of strays/ferals with characteristics of Maine Coons. Obviously I can't be sure but I wonder if someone was breeding and either the stock got loose or they got abandoned for reasons. Either way it's making the kitteh gene pool in the MTG a little more interesting.

She was 13 and was the sweetest, best-natured, most low key dog ever. An Olympic caliber swimmer, lover of just about all other dogs but especially people, was happiest being fawned over my strangers, which happened all the time. This dog has always drawn crowds. People would cross the street or chase me down the block to pet her.
Will miss my girl forever, the world was better for her having been in it, even though it wasn't long enough.

100 Wild animal story

Sitting in a town's small central park, I observed a squirrel. He carried a walnut to a USPS mail box. The nut was placed under the hinge point of the cover that is pulled down to deposit mail. He then scurried down to hide under a park bench. He sat there, peaking up at the mailbox. Eventually, a man came to the mailbox to place a letter. As he opened the cover, the hinge crushed the nut - opening it completely. As the man walked away the squirrel ran from cover, and up the box. He quickly ate the nut meat, then went off searching for another nut.

True story.

How does a squirrel think out a plan this complex?

Man, I sure don't want to hijack it either, but apropos of canine influenza, I thought I'd better post a link to the American Veterinary Medical Association's backgrounder on it:

http://tinyurl.com/k3adenr

It's written in doc-speak rather than English, but it does contain the relevant stats, info about kenneling, vaccines, symptoms, treatment, prognosis, all that good stuff-- as well as the info that canine influenza can infect kittehs, too.

I'm not necessarily urging anyone to get themselves or their puppeh vaccinated (canine influenza vaccines can't be used in kittehs)-- but the thing to know about any animal influenza is that its genetic material can mix with the genetic material of human influenza viruses and create a new human flu virus that is much nastier than the usual seasonal flu bugs.

Full disclosure-- I work as a medical writer and learned more about influenza viruses in the course of my work than I really wanted to know. It's enough to say that the last major worldwide flu pandemic, in 2009, took off when a seasonal human flu virus mixed and matched its RNA with a bird flu virus and a swine flu virus-- and the result was a flu virus that couldn't be prevented by the annual flu shots then available. The problem here is that no one can tell when human flu viruses are going to undergo another major shift because of contact with an animal influenza virus, and how severe the new bug might be. Some pandemic viruses are a lot worse than others (think 1918-1919, a killer flu that again resulted from human, bird, and swine viruses mingling their genetic materials).

I didn't mean to scare anyone by doing a CNN journalist bit-- that OMG my dog/cat can get KILLER FLU and we're ALL DOOMED!! Just to say that there is a reason why vets as well as docs who treat humans keep an eye out for any new flu virus, no matter which species of animal it infects. We not only love our pets, but we're all in this together.

My condolences to ThunderB-- I haven't lost any of my kittehs to flu, but I have lost three of them suddenly, and I know how much sudden loss hurts.

111 Goldendoodle is not a breed. It's a cross-breed. It's going to take many generations of breeding before the characteristics breed true, meaning right now a goldendoodle may get the best of a lab and the best of a poodle, or the worst of a lab and the worst of a poodle, or somewhere in between.

Having said that, if you find a goldendoodle that suits you, get it and enjoy. But it's not a breed.

The much anticipated and controversial Dog Park opened across the river (SHV) from me last week.

Less than a week after opening, there was a terrible tragedy.

Against park rules, Mom let her 8 and 11 year olds take their little dog into the the park unchaperoned (she stayed in the car to eat her lunch).

Kids took the little dog into the big dog side inadvertently.

Sad, sad story... 4 big dogs grabbed the little one and treated it like a squeeky toy!

Mom accepts total responsibility, but where the f**k were the big dog owners?!?

My three pups have their own 10 acre 'dog park' and allow no non-introduced visitors...

Yes, there must be something in the genes of the ferals, and not just in the last few years. My late red tabby-with-white, Arizona, was a found kitten who grew up to look like a Maine Coon -- and that was in the Eighties. Plus there are more than a few real ferals in my apartment complex with bushy fur. (Perhaps Wolf, above, was sowing his oats before I took him in and had him altered.)

Wolf is my second. The previous medium-hair black, Marie Antoinette, was one of the sweetest-natured, and probably the smartest, cat I've ever known well. She loved to walk on a lead and harness, believe it or not. I suspect the black cats are generally more easygoing and adaptable anyway.
