Louise Mensch is a Strange Bird

Charles C. W. Cooke on the left's favorite conspiracy theorist, who doesn't get nearly the (negative) coverage that Alex Jones does.

Because the left likes its own conspiracy theories.

Mensch reads like a woman who speaks civics as a third or fourth language that she lost touch with long ago. She has a pidgin grasp on the American [systems of government and criminal justice], and an ersatz, bastardized relationship with reality.

One part novella-fantasy, one part hallway-hearsay, Mensch's world is one in which an ethereal "they" are omnipresent and omnipotent. "They," she tells us, are considering executing Steve Bannon, though he hasn’t been charged with so much as speeding in a school zone.

Executing? Did I read that right?

"They" have already "sentenced" Rudy Giuliani -- to what fate we will presumably find out when someone next mentions his name on television. "They" will soon overturn the election results, and are on the verge of making Orrin hosta president.

Donald Trump, in turn, is perennially but a few steps from the gallows. On the 13th of April, Mensch promised that the "first arrests may be as soon as next week." Yesterday, she related that the president faced imminent "federal execution."

I'm not fantasizing this, right? She just said that two high ranking officials are facing "federal execution," right?

Presumably, "they" just needed some more time.

Usurpation abounds, at home and abroad, and seems never to be walled in by anything as prosaic as the law. Mensch’s Supreme Court has proactive police powers and a Bruce Willis–esque "marshal" who chases down helicopters and colludes heroically with the rogue justices. Her Congress acts primarily in camera [secretly, without the public being informed], and may already have informed Trump that he is no longer permitted to use his legal powers....

The America of Mensch’s imagination is a place in which the entire Republican party is imminently going to jail -- on RICO charges, no less -- because Paul Ryan is a partisan. What the Da Vinci Code was to Christian theology, Louise Mensch is to James Madison's handiwork. See how the symbols line up in the moonlight?

It is on the subject of Russia, however, that Mensch has really hit her stride.

I'll direct you to NRO to read Mensch's extensive research into Russia (KOMPROMAT!!!), and her suggestions as to how to deal with the Red Menace. (Hint: It involves bombs and lots of them.)

Will Megyn Kelly be interviewing Louise, or is NBC not terribly interested in putting their own fruitbats on display?

Cooke mentions that upon first seeing this teenage-girl fiction writer (no that was her previous gig, really) on a British news program, his father remarked that she was the "dullest" woman he'd ever seen (in the British sense -- dumb).

So now we see the sorts of fantasies the dull spin out: Not interesting fantasies, not compelling conspiracy theories which you may not quite believe but still think, "Man, that's kind of interesting, even if it is bonkers."

No, the dull spin out exceedingly stupid conspiracy theories that can't even be appreciated on a detached aesthetic level.

BTW: I wondered where the word "bonkers" derived from and was disappointed to see that there is no known etymology. Apparently it appeared in 1945 or so, and one of the first definitions claimed it came from British sailor slang meaning, at first, "slightly drunk," and speculates it might derive from the idea of being unsteady on one's feet from a bonk on the head.

That sounds like bullshit to me. It's too easy. Sounds like the guy asked his seven year old kid to come up with a guess and that's what the kid came up with after one second's thought.

My guess would be that it's derived from some pidgin language and has something to do with tropical insanity, like the Australian's "troppo."

My more specific guess, that it is related to "bonzo" (crazy, nuts), turns out to be wrong, as bonzo came later than bonkers, and might just be a mash-up of bonkers and gonzo.

18 Does this even qualify as conspiracy theorizing?

When I think conspiracy theories, I think public information spun and twisted into knots so that it fits whatever shape the theorist wants.

There's no public information here. Reading John Podesta's emails and saying "this is some weird language, it's probably code for x" is conspiracy theories. Noticing that people die suddenly in ways that are convenient to the Clintons and inferring causation is conspiracy theories.

This isn't even that.

Vincent Bugliosi believed that George W. Bush should have been charged with the murders of more than 4,000 American soldiers who have died in Iraq since the American-led invasion of that country, because of his belief that Bush launched the invasion under false pretenses. In his book, The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder, he laid out his view of evidence and outlined what questions he would ask Bush at a potential murder trial. Bugliosi testified at a House Judiciary Committee meeting on July 25, 2008, at which he urged impeachment proceedings for Bush. The book formed the basis of a 2012 documentary film, The Prosecution of an American President.

I mean.. conspiracy theories have evidence. The evidence is usually incomplete, or non-conclusive, and you need to make jumps of logic to get to where they want you to go, but they do have some.

She's got literally zero sources here. There's no grainy photographs, or a guy on the grassy knoll or anything. You need a starting point for it to be a conspiracy theory. This is just fiction.

Berkeley Antifa leader arrested for inciting a riot

http://tinyurl.com/ydy6632x
Posted by: The Political Hat

The person arrested was Yvette Felarca -- not really an "Antifa leader," but instead the main leader of BAMN, who are Antifa's allies, but a totally different group. BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) is overtly communist, and advocates violence to advance communist revolution. Antifa, in contrast, is anarchist, and practices violence mostly to just incite chaos and get their jollies. Yes, Antifa is in the process of being hijacked leftward by clever co-opting commies, but that[s a slightly different story. For now, Felarca is in BAMN, not Antifa.

What's remarkable about Yvette Felarca is that she is a seventh grade teacher and unapologetically spend her class time teaching her 13-year-old public school students that it is their moral duty to "punch Nazis" (i.e. physically assault conservatives), and she BRINGS THEM TO VIOLENT PROTESTS as class field trips.

When, last year, she was removed from her teaching position due to pending charges from this assault case, parents in Berkeley protested in her favor before the school board and demanded her return (!!!), and the board caved and restored her to teaching duties.

The parents of Berkeley WANT their children to be indoctrinated into the most extreme violent left-wing ideology, and complain when the brainwashing isn't extreme enough.

Opposite-land.

You only say that because,

A) You didn't spend years on the late shift listening to Coast to Coast,

and

B) You don't waste a lot of time watching creepypasta on YouTube.

Seriously, *most* conspiracy droolings don't have any potential. The fact that people believe something has *literally* no bearing on whether it's real.

Usually people believe something like fake moon landings or that a quarter million children go missing in the US every year and are never found (and/or are inducted into an alien super-soldier program I AM NOT KIDDING) because they just don't have any knowledge of the subject, and don't *try* to get any knowledge of the subject.

They just want to be titillated, and don't have an adequate grasp of the difference between entertainment and reality.

Something I've noted, though, is that modern Bay Area leftist parents seem to think of it as something of a badge of honor for their teenagers to get arrested during street protests...

... if and only if the "arrest" is one of those showy scams involving protesters being briefly detained and then released without charges being filed. Bragging rights. Sticking it to The Man while skating away casually. With nothing more lasting and damaging than some quickly fading flex-cuff marks on their wrists.

Something that might involve genuine risk of prosecution on criminal charges? They're much less down with the struggle if it might pose a problem for their kid in a professional context later on in life.

164 My guess would be that it's derived from some pidgin language and has something to do with tropical insanity, like the Australian's "troppo."

My more specific guess, that it is related to "bonzo" (crazy, nuts), turns out to be wrong, as bonzo came later than bonkers, and might just be a mash-up of bonkers and gonzo.

Brits like their rhyming slang. Was there a German, US, or UK advertisement or product that rhymed with bonker or bonkers? Maybe it's related to the slang "honkers" as in her honkers are bonkers?

Posted by: zombie at July 20, 2017 02:18 PM (DQ4Fv)

Okay, I don't know how, given your history here, that you got this so wrong.

Antifa is the descendant of a long string of socialist and communist groups going back as far as the 1920s, and is a continuation of the far left confrontation between nationalists and internationalists that led to WWII.

Members of the communist groups AFA and No Platform founded Antifa, and its association with "anarchism" is through groups like the British Anarchist Federation, which is *literally* communist.

Most "anarchist" groups are communists who are basically liars. There is a "non-state communism" pseudo-philosophical school of thought, but it always comes down to attacking the enemies of communism.

When academics now talk about "traditional anarchism," they're not talking about Lysander Spooner, they're talking about anarcho-syndicalists and anarcho-communists.

I know this is a pet peeve of mine, but I just hate that so many words' meanings have been so utterly destroyed, and I believe this one is particularly misleading.

Antifa has been socialist/communist from the beginning, but yes they have growing ties, particularly in the US, with other communist groups.

Because of that, everyone is scared of it - scared to watch it, scared to talk about it, scared to admit that a lot of scenes in that movie are some of the damn funniest they have ever put on film, while at the same time being extremely insightful.

The Name of Jehovah - The Peoples Party of Judea - the Individualists - Biggus Dickus - every one of those scenes can still make me laugh uncrontrollably!

260 OK, I think I'm onto something with the rhyming slang.

Conk as a slang word for break, fall, slow down, go to sleep, die out dates to 1915-20 in the US. Of course a lot of US and UK crossover happens because of WWII.

Conk out leads to zonk out (again, rhyming slang), as in put to sleep or later be high on drugs. So maybe a zonker is drugs that are effective at causing one to zonk out. Zonkers would then be the logical form of more than one zonker.

That's zonkers!

261 "Most 'anarchist' groups are communists who are basically liars."

My all-time favorite: black-clad Greek "anarchists" violently rioting in the streets of Athens.

Rioting against what? Well, against cuts to the cushy pension and benefit packages of Greece's bloated civil service sector.

Anarchists For Big Government. You couldn't make it up.

263 Antifa is the descendant of a long string of socialist and communist
groups going back as far as the 1920s, and is a continuation of the far
left confrontation between nationalists and internationalists that led
to WWII.

Haymarket?

My own opinion is that the organizational roots go back a little earlier -- the anarchist bombings prior to WWI, for example. Of course, the mother of them all was the French Revolution.

265 BTW: I wondered where the word "bonkers" derived from and was disappointed to see that there is no known etymology. Apparently it appeared in 1945 or so, and one of the first definitions claimed it came from British sailor slang meaning, at first, "slightly drunk,"

That's possible. I would note that I was surprised when I ran into Brits and South Africans years ago and found out that they mean "drunk" when they say "pissed" whereas we all know that it means "angry". There was a lot of miscommunication between the Americans and them for a little while.

You can never know with British slang. They really like to make a mess of English.

and speculates it might derive from the idea of being unsteady on one's feet from a bonk on the head.

So, it really came from Star Trek - "Bonk, bonk on the head!" That kid looked British ... judging by his teeth. But, in this case one would assume that it would be "bonked".

AFAIK the term "anti-fascist" dates to the 20s.

Obviously the larger problem is older.

267 This whole thing reminds of the Sarah Palin "Trig Truthers" who were convinced that Palin had faked her pregnancy. That one was very persistent and featured Andrew Sullivan in the role of Louise Mensch.

268 135 "The parents of Berkeley WANT their children to be indoctrinated into the most extreme violent left-wing ideology"

BAN THE BOX!!!

You know that it is unlikely that someone in HR will do a criminal background check on that nice middle class white boy from the Bay Area. That black kid from Oakland? SOP.

273 Re: Bonkers political commentators:
This really ain't new. The internet just makes it easier for them to broadcast. Back when the Federal Building in Oklahoma was bombed, there were apparently guys broadcasting what amounted to radio shows on amateur radio bands. I remember this because one guy called himself "Mark from Michigan". Since I live in Michigan it made the local news. One such self-proclaimed "news reporter" was broadcasting that several "black UN helicopters" were circling the bombing site, indicating this was a conspiracy of the New World Order being run by the Bush family under the direction of Pres. GHW Bush... or some such nonsense.

Moonbattery is eternal.
