Claremont McKenna College Gives a Few Disruptive SJWs Suspensions for Shutting Down a Heather MacDonald Speech

Some of these punishments are pretty decent and fit the crime -- a full year of suspension from college is a penalty that fits the crime, and is no joke.

But only three students got that penalty -- out of approximately 170 individuals who participated in the shut-down.

Four other students were penalized -- one barely. Three got a semester's suspension, which is barely a penalty. Another got probation -- which is not a penalty. It's a Formal Declaration of Getting a Strong Talking To.

The other 163 or so have walked with no penalty -- some because they couldn't be identified (and hey, I guess it's time to prohibit masks at demonstrations, huh, upon penalty of suspension or even expulsion...?).

There are two common suggestions for deterring crime:

1. Making the penalty so stiff no one thinks about breaking the law.

2. Increase detection/capture rates so that a much larger portion of law-breakers are sanctioned.

Studies prove that #2 works, and #1 barely works at all. A huge penalty is so huge that everyone assumes "That won't happen to me." Also, there are serious concerns of fairness -- a penalty should be based on the severity of the crime itself. You get into a dubious morality when you say you're going to penalize something much more harshly than the crime warrants, just to "send a message" to other law-breakers.

Penalties should be about individual justice, not "sending messages." It's not really fair if 99% of lawbreakers are not punished at all, and then 1% gets some outsized penalty to make up for all the non-penalties the ones you didn't catch got away with.

So a one year suspension for trying to shut down other students' right to hear a speaker -- sounds good.

But this isn't going to be any kind of deterrent if just 1.5% of the malefactors are punished. You need to catch, and suspend, 25% or more of them to restore order.

And I'm assuming the ones suspended did not commit actual crimes of violence. If they did, then a one year suspension is far too light -- they should be handed over to the police to get their criminal record colored up a bit, and maybe spend some time in the iron-bar college.

If they are suspended, do they still have to pay? Because if they don't have to pay, I can see where this won't work. No school will cut there throat and lose 25% of their revenues.

Even if every donor "boycotted" the school, they're pretty much set for decades.

So all we can do is watch from afar and hurl impotent words at them.

yes, but currently non-prosecution is about sending US the message that Hillary/Podesta/Comey CAN take bribes and sell out America, but any "drain the swamp" effort will be met with unwarranted deep state probes of the innocent. Selective prosecution of the patriots, FBI level protection of the crooks.

But yes, at least faced with donor resistance and absurd levels of intolerance to free speech ... a few have faced real penalties from the university. BUT they probably committed real criminal acts, and should face real civil lawsuits as well as criminal.

But still, at least the BigU fascists have bent a little, a slight admission of wrong. Their front line has buckled ... keep probing.

Anyone who knows the Claremont Colleges knew this was true the minute they heard about this. Scripps is a radical left wing feminist institution, and Pitzer is a wanna-be Berkeley. Pomona is basically in the Stanford model so it's "normal" campus radicals.

CMC is considered conservative by the other colleges, which is why they were chanting "How do you spell racist? C-M-C".

I don't buy the "we can't tell who they are" thing, everyone has cell phones and is taking pictures and videos. Everyone knows someone. You can find out. They just don't want to.

The faculty fears the students and their parents more than the alumni and the victims. Alumni are barely able to generate more than a single digit IQ when it comes to donations, they don't give a damn what happens on campus or what their alma mater is like. Victims are declared unpersons so they don't count.

The killings shouldn't be celebrated but the situation is greatly mischaracterized and many myths abound. Most don't know that this was the culmination of over a week's rioting that included damaging stores and cars in town, burning buildings, and shutting down the entire campus. 81 There is no video of the Kent State shooting incident, but an AUDIO recording exists, and was suppressed for 40 years. When it was finally released several years ago, it revealed, very distinctly, unequivocally, that some protester STARTED the shooting by firing a handgun from within the the crowd toward the National Guard. The troops began to return fire as an automatic reaction to being shot at.

Th sound of the shots, and the caliber of the weapons, is unmistakable.

None of this was known until recently. The false leftist narrative that the troops just started firing unprovoked turned out to be a total lie.

Yep. One of the unlucky dead was ROTC. Also nine wounded, one permanently paralyzed.

Kent State was one of many college riots which followed Nixon's expanding the war into Cambodia.

Nixon's tragedy was that the he had promised to end the War, but couldn't deliver, because he was concerned with too quick an exit leading to the fall of South Vietnam, bad optics in the midst of the quite serious Cold War.

88 Nearest dead victim was 85 yards away, furthest was 130. Nearest injured victim was 35 yards away.

Nearest person shot was about 70 feet, which is theoretically in throwing range, but there were earlier incidents when the guard came under attack from much closer, and smaller groups. A very large crowd was there this time, and young men on edge and outnumbered panicked. Someone shot a pistol (nobody knows who, it could have been an officer, but probably not) and they went off.

103 When it was finally released several years ago, it revealed, very distinctly, unequivocally, that some protester STARTED the shooting by firing a handgun from within the the crowd toward the National Guard. The troops began to return fire as an automatic reaction to being shot at.

Th sound of the shots, and the caliber of the weapons, is unmistakable.

So the audio clearly reveals WHO fired the handgun? Audio.

Conventional wisdom is that the first shot was a .45 from a Guardsman.

Again, the average distance to the dead, unarmed, protesters was 100 yards.

If you know so much about the unmistakable sounds of calibers, what kind of aimed control fire with M-1s kills four people a football field away?

They certainly weren't in pistol range.

107 Without being there or seeing what happened, my guess is the guardsmen did not intend on shooting any students, but weren't particularly well trained or disciplined, were on edge, and fired too low, hitting people at a distance. But who knows, maybe they'd just had enough and decided some hippies were going to hit the floor. For firing over 60 rounds into a crowd, the casualties were remarkably light.

129 It was M-1s by all accounts I've seen.

And it's far from proven that the Guard were shot at first. As cited above, most accepted view is that someone in the Guard shot a pistol first.

Shooting into a crowd, many kids just walking to class, is not the right response under any circumstances.

Under-trained, panicky, and pissed-off fits.

Also over-armed with the M-1s. Needed stuff like rubber bullets.

When the audio was released, there was detailed analysis done of it. The person making the recording was in the center oft he crowd, and the analysts concurred that the audio of the initial four gunshots was definitely a pistol (not a rifle) and definitely originated near the microphone and then can heard heard whistling away -- whereas the subsequent shots sounded like rifle-fire and could be heard incoming toward the microphone. THAT's how they determined that the initial shots originated from within the crowd of protesters.

169 Historical curiosity of the day: Daniel Patrick Moynihan was working as an aide in the Nixon White House at the time of Kent State.

He laughed in disbelief when he heard fellow Democrats later talking about how Tricky Dick had cynically orchestrated the shootings to put the fear of God into the longhaired hippie peace demonstrators.

What was going on at 1600 Pennsylvania on that afternoon, Moynihan went on to explain, was total confusion and frustration.

They didn't know anything more about what happened than did Joe Sixpack watching the television news. There had been a complete breakdown of communications between the White House and the Ohio Guard command structure.

180 I bet the administration is probably happy enough to cautiously hand out a few penalties and see if that scares people straight (it won't).

If they came hard out of the gate and really tracked down who all the protesters were, they'd be suspending a large number of people. Hurts their bottom line and they'd almost certainly have a backlash on their hands.

Cornell did this with a protest on campus--black students took over the student union and then subsequently armed themselves. The admin threw them out, and it led to a huge student protest--so they relented. And when they relented, a lot of professors quit. The argument is made that the government department has never recovered. Alan Bloom most notable among the departures. Thomas Sowell had departed not long before for similar reasons.

Posted by: CPT11A at July 19, 2017 05:33 PM (hxUdS)

..

the trick to cover it up was for two soldiers to work as a pair.

It held 8 rounds, so Germans learned to count 8 shots and listen for the ring--that was one soldier who was now reloading, so it was safe to come out of cover and fire.

Two soldiers would fire in a 3-2-3 pattern (i think the first soldier had to only load 6 rounds) so that the first soldier's rifle would make the ping.

Hearing 8 rounds the germans would the presumably pop up and soldier #2 has six shots left while his buddy is reloading.

I may have the precise details off a bit but that was the idea.

Posted by: TexasDan at July 19, 2017 05:44 PM (yL25O)

199 Ooh, gun thread!

Actually the M1 en bloc clip feeds downward into the internal magazine.

No risk to thumb if bolt is fully locked back - bolt releases when downward pressure on the follower (under the en bloc of ammo just inserted) is decreased, not when clip is fully inserted.

And very very very skeptical about the idea that the en bloc ejecting after 8 rounds, usually with a distinctive "ping" (from the spring steel the en bloc is made of) was something heard on the battlefield. Or that it could be used, or spoofed by throwing down empties, to time/deter attacks on a position where M1s were being fired. Any actual credible reports of this? Haven't seen any.

They make a nice "ping", but it's hardly audible in a noise environment, and I'm confident most WWII and Korean War environments qualified as "noisy".

I always wondered about that as well but the soldiers used to talk about it back then. I suspect the high tone was different enough than the gunfire and explosions and screams of the dying to stand out, but probably not at any significant ranges. I know from personal experience that some sounds can get through the roar of noise that others may not.

203 @rhomboid

It's more of a training and familiarity issue. I had the bolt slam home on my thumb more than once. I was a slow learner at some things.

The 'ping' danger was more of a problem/tactic at shorter range, intermittent firefights. Not all fights are constant shooting, ammo supplies are usually limited.

You shove them down into the internal magazine (fixed) from on top.

The bolt releases automatically when you do this, and if you have your thumb in the way, from holding the stripper clip wrong, the bolt tries to help you understand the error of your ways by removing your thumb for you.

213 Mark, yep, it's possible to have the bolt slam on your thumb, but only if the bolt is not fully locked back as you load (in a normally functioning rifle).

Only had a partial slam event once, incredible moment of dumbassery, my own rifle, sitting on the bench, closing down the range for the day - bolt was hung up on the bullet guide, as many of the M1s do generally when you load a clip (and as they'll all do if you carefully set it up deliberately).

Always visually confirm bolt is fully locked back (easy to do). Do that, chances of "M1 thumb" recede to negligible.

244 Male brains retain all sorts of stupid mundane stuff, never been one of my trains of thought but work with one of those guys who can rattle off baseball stats like his life depended on it.

245 There have been extended taffy-yanks on the CMP forum about the en bloc thing in combat, have not really followed them closely, impression was that it was unlikely that the enemy could/would be able to use the sound in any useful way (pretty risky move to assume there's only one weapon in the area you're charging, and that it's empty).

A comparable thing is the need to change barrels on the German MG42 in intense firefights, where they'd get heated up. Did American/British/Canadian/Soviet troops really attempt to "time" MG42 barrel changes?

And moving up to larger things that go boom, interested to read that like the US at the outset of WWII, the Germans had problems with their torpedoes. And some uncanny exact parallels. Problems with both proximity and contact exploders, ordnance guys dismissing the mounting pleas of sub commanders with field experience of the problems. Never knew that.

So ..... torpedo thread?

(and CaliGirl, I loved your comment the other day about checking out a Chula Vista ER and maternity ward to assess the state of US immigration and assimilation practices)

246 Ace: "Penalties should be about individual justice, not 'sending messages.' It's not really fair if 99% of lawbreakers are not punished at all, and then 1% gets some outsized penalty to make up for all the non-penalties the ones you didn't catch got away with."

So amend this slightly. You get the full brunt of punishment unless you squeal on others of your cohort to dilute gross punishment. And drive the same bargain to the next guy who gets turned. Don't want to tattle? Congratulations. Meet your new cell mate, Bubba, in Upstate Pound Me In The Ass Correctional Prison. Oh, you'll cooperate, great. Here's a cell with a window and you get library privileges in Downstate Rehabilitation Facility. So lone wolves get gross punishment; groups get netted punishment. Give them a fair choice.

247 I don't really know very much about guns other than that they are loud, scary and very neat engineering. I've fired some, studied others, and particularly some eras I know some about from reading. But I am not a particularly good shot and have not used them very much. I got pretty proficient with a 1911 (as in how to load, shoot, clear, etc) but never comfortable. They scare the crap out of me, just a boiling gut level nervousness. I am kind of unlucky and clumsy with mechanical stuff, break things a lot. Last thing I need is to have a gun go off that way.

249 My brain is full of stupid, useless crap like what kind of dice you roll for hit points for a thief in AD&D and the best trail to get to Jefferson Park in the Mt Jefferson Wilderness area, what my ex fiance's favorite song was and how there's graffiti all over the walls at Geno's East in Chicago. Not a lot of useful stuff, really.

My brain is 95% useless trivia. Brimming with it.

And most of one's life is spent trying to insist that one's trivia knowledge is MORE IMPORTANT than some other person's trivia knowledge, to justify one's pathetic mental database of irrelevant minutiae. This explains most disagreements and social discord in modern society.

255 I think male brains hang on to odd trivia because its part of how we were designed: to be able to pick up and remember disparate, minor clues we put together to be able to do things like hunt, defend, build, and protect. This wolf has this kind of back paw, that plant makes that sound, those caves will cover this much area. It makes us good at survival and the stuff we're supposed to be doing. Doesn't make us very good at civilization, though.

279 They make a nice "ping", but it's hardly audible in a noise environment, and I'm confident most WWII and Korean War environments qualified as "noisy".

I was watching a Documentary on the Korean War and some of the vets said they moved in pairs so that when the Enemy heard the Ping they would pop up and the other shooter had a nice target. I think they were talking about Patrols.

It's my understanding that new-ish brain studies show a clear link between having an emotional experience while learning and the ability to recall the info later.

Ergo a link between emotion and memory.

My theory is now that men and women, to the extent that different kinds of information impact them differently on an emotional level, remember different sorts of things.

289 I think the Department of Education should start selecting rape culture afflicted colleges with sexual assault rates that exceed that of war torn hellholes and shut them down for the sake of public safety. Starting with the school from the original "1 in 4" study and continuing on to any school that had to settle a lawsuit over the Dear Colleague letter kangaroo courts. If they claim their campus is unsafe, you must take them at their word and lock the doors. For the children. And to show the Republican Party cares about women.

290 I just want to add that there are actually three legs on the stool of effective deterrence:

1 - Harsh punishment

2 - Strong likelihood at perpetrators will be caught, and therefore subject to the aforementioned harsh punishment

and 3 - The punishment needs to come relatively swiftly after the infraction

Just wanted to add this bit of info. Solid post otherwise. I subscribe to your newsletter and appreciate the cut of your jib.
