You have to hand it to the artist though. It is an astonishingly lifelike portrait. A lot of historical paintings, they give a slightly unreal quality to the subject. This guy looks like a guy you would see at your local deli or coffee shop or getting in line to watch the Force Awakens in boat shorts.
His name would be Murray. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at July 21, 2017 09:48 AM (0mskG) This was around the time when a naturalism was in vogue--in portraiture, and even then there were strict rules. The Colonies were more relaxed, though. For history paintings, realism took a back-seat to idealism. The heroes had to be glorified and beautified to symbolically represent their heroic status. Benjamin West got in a lot of trouble for trying to make history painting more realistic. Posted by: Kris at July 21, 2017 09:53 AM (nwqNw) 132

For 4 adults, 4 kids, all rides and attractions, staying at DisneyWorld and full amenities with all bells and whistles, $25,000 total including airfare and a rental is within the realm of possibility. Stay at a hotel offsite, only go to the Magic Kingdom, take the shuttle bus or rent cheap, and drive down instead of flying and it becomes far more reasonable. Still, Disney is hella expensive even with compromises like that.

Or at least arrange to visit a different park each day (separate tix might be cheaper than park-hopper, but you'll have less flexibility). Oliver Cromwell has a few character flaws, like wanting to kill a lot of Irish people, but vanity wasn't one of them. the phrase "warts and all" comes from a request to his portrait artist not to make him look better than he was
Posted by: Boulder terlit hobo at July 21, 2017 09:57 AM (wd1mg) I heard on the radio recently that 25% of college students believe the United States is the only country in the history of the world to have legalized slavery, slavery as an institution. As part of his punitive measures against Catholic Ireland, Oliver Cromwell ordered 5,000 Irish men and boys to be sold into slavery. Most were sent to the West Indies, where the majority died within a few years, worked to death or killed by disease. Cromwell is a difficult historical figure to understand, full of contradictions. They got 'em for $79 per person per day, so you're looking at $2500 there. You'll drop an easy $250 a day in the park. You can get adjoining condo rooms for $250 each per day - nice rooms, nothing shitty. No way you should spend 25K chief. But you are going to spend over 10K. It was said to have been built by Abraham and Ishmael, but the design of the building itself is way too late for that. It has a Greco-Persian feel to it. During the early Islamic years, there was debate as to the importance of the Kaaba. For a while, some Muslims prayed to Jerusalem, but that could have been the result of the conflict between caliphs and sects. The stone itself has been destroyed numerous times by warring factions of Muslims. Interesting. Posted by: Kris at July 21, 2017 10:25 AM (nwqNw) 262

Go buy a couple sheets of acid. Rent a couple costumes from the costume supply store. They don't even really have to be Disney, just animals and stuff. Buy a bunch of old Disney DVDs. Turn off all the lights in the basement, put the DVDs on, drop acid, and have some friends come through every now and then in costume and freak you out. "Cromwell is a difficult historical figure to understand, full of contradictions."
It's funny, I feel like he's very understandable. He started off as a man who was very noble, very religious. Add to that him being a very driven, type "A" personality who did not abide losing in any way, shape, or form, and also the fact that he had extremely good, innate, organizing and military capabilities. He starts off in the wars as a lower ranking officer, several ranks down, but he makes his unit a crack unit, and people start noticing that he always wins, because he's better at this kind of thing than anybody else. (btw, his 'New Model Army" was revolutionary then, but was the organizational model which even the US Army today is descended from) Then, he wasn't going to lose when the people over him were corrupt, lazy, or stupid, so when they failed, he got rid of them and took over their duties himself. Not that hard to do when you've got an entire army that is fanatically devoted to you, personally. (The key to why everyone, even in Parliament, stayed so scared of him) Then he kept trying to settle things, but people kept opposing him, trying to mess things up, and he was not a man of infinite patience. Charles 1 screwed around and screwed around with him, had plenty of chances to make a settlement, and finally Cromwell said "i'm sick of this shit, I'm chopping your stupid head off, and let that be a lesson to the rest of you." Remember at this point there was no one left to tell him "no", since he had already executed some of his former friends when they had opposed him and he took it as a personal betrayal. Ireland looks like the case where the man and his army had just fought for too long - meaning that they had gotten very good at it, but they were sick of it and sick of the other side still fighting, and they were all pissed off, all the time. Which means no one much batted an eye when they went to Ireland and said "fuck it, lets just kill every man, woman, and child as soon as we see them, and when everyone on this bloody Island is dead we can toss some of those Scots over here and go home." He tried to be good and enlightened at the beginning, but when his enemies pushed him and pushed him he fell back into "DO IT OR DIE!!" mode for everything, and never got out of it. Most likely. If the guy has glioblastoma like the press says, and considering the press, who really knows??... if he does, he's going to die soon, and die really hard. I have known 3 people in my life who had glioblastoma, and none of them made it past 8 or 9 months. Instead of being a jerk from a hospital bed, he might consider getting all his affairs in order, and making peace with God, and people around him. Posted by: kraken at July 21, 2017 10:08 AM (zSVEm) The "press" includes McCains' Senate Office, his family including Meghan, and the Mayo Clinic itself which sent out a press release with McCain's permission. Yes, he had a glioblastoma removed along with the "blood clot" last week during a four hour craniotomy in the AZ hospital. He is not in a hospital bed, he is recuperating at home and will be deciding on what type of treatment he will have going forward. So, no , it's not fake news. Rand Paul said yesterday that although this is a sad diagnosis, he personally has known people to live five years with a glioblastoma. So who knows. I took a family of four to Disney a year or so ago at Christmas. for 10-11K with flights costs included. Stayed at Animal Kingdom. Best vacation ever. Not cheap though. Do your homework if you have never been there before. Read about how to see the parks efficiently. There is a skill to it. I have done D twice, once with a gold plated meal plan, once paying cash on the fly for food. Gold plated meal plan is a waste of $$ unless you like to eat like a pig AT EVERY MEAL. Two days in we were throwing food out and left many meal credits on the card. The high end resorts are nice. Lots of room and relaxed atmosphere. Worth the money. Compared to the lower end hotels. If I could do it over, I would not stay at Animal Kingdom (no Monorail) and stay at a high end hotel with a monorail stop. The Floridian or the other weird looking one. I just read that someone polled Americans and that 62 percent say it is the Fed's responsibility to see everyone has "health care."
So that is where we are, and that number will go up and never down. It is pointless to ask "is it your responsibility to pay for that unemployed guy and his family right over there in the next checkout lane, should you have to pay for their hospital and doctor and drugs" because well, we just don't poll that way. And since almost a majority of Americans don't pay the Fed any income taxes anyhow, hell, they just might say, yes, but just pay it Fed, don't ask me to contribute. With as any as we have not paying taxes beyond just the clip for SS and unemployment, it is impossible to ever cut welfare, and welfare is what Obamacare is. 453 The Pope was right to force the DH rule onto English cricketers. No one wants to see a bowler pretend that he's a batsman too. The Stuarts were right to support this. And screw King Billy -- he was a "pitcher"!

Cromwell was necessary. Sorry about the Irish. Posted by: troyriser at July 21, 2017 11:22 AM (Fw5cQ) Yeah a 'representative republic' where he was the God Emperor. If we are talking about great men who have the choice to be either good or evil, there is no more stark contrast than say between Cromwell and Washington.
