Carl Bernstein: The Country is in the Midst of a Civil War

Ed Driscoll makes the case that Bernstein is late to the party on this, as the claim has persuasively been made before that the US has in fact entered a period of "Cold Civil War."

A sci-fi writer called a book "The Cool War," referring to Cold War with occasional bits of hotness (like, say, a partisan gunning down Republican Congressmen).

We might be in a Cold Civil War with some hotness from time to time.

Driscoll quotes a blogger called "The Hyacinth Girl" who spoke of Cold Civil War back in the relatively mild 2007:

At some point last month, I put down William Gibson’s newest tome and picked up something written by Victor Davis Hanson. I am only now getting back to Spook Country, and though I’m afraid that I know exactly where Gibson is going with this, I found his idea of this country being in a “cold civil war” to be fascinating. What would that entail, exactly? A cold war is a war without conflict, defined in one of several online dictionaries as “[a] state of rivalry and tension between two factions, groups, or individuals that stops short of open, violent confrontation.” In that respect, is the current political climate one of “cold civil war”? I think arguments could be made to that effect. My mother, not much of a political enthusiast, has made similar assessments since the 2000 election, concerned that the political climate (which has become increasingly acrimonious in the last 7 years) would indeed lead to some sort of lukewarm civil war–not hot, not cold, just divisive and destructive. Seven years ago, I laughed off her fears, secure in my naivete. Now, I’m not so sure.

I've previously said it and I believe it: 90% of your political stances right now flow directly from whether you think we're at a point of crisis, or you think, as some NeverTrumpers are currently giving to claiming, that everything's pretty much okay and it's all just business as usual.

As to the "pretty much okay" component - no, we're pretty fookin' far from OK. And, yes, we are having cold civil wars both peer to peer in culture and subject to tyrant WRT government. There's considerable overlap, but if you're woke, you see the battles all over the country.

I'm super-late to the party on this, but I never really got the hate for National Review until Trump won and they just flat-out refused to acknowledge that it was at the very least better than Hillary at least 3/4ths of the time. (I was surprised to see one of the few Trump defenders there is Victor Davis Hanson, who is as eloquent and insightful as ever in his support for Trump).

There's all kinds of things about Trump I can't stand, and he was absolutely not my guy in the primaries, but I got the hell over it, held my nose, and pulled the lever. And we got a fantastic SCOTUS Justice out of it instead of whatever nightmare Hillary had planned, a severe drop in the border invasion from Mexico, and a stirring defense of Western Civilization in a country Obama made a habit of shitting on.

I can't take Jay Nordlinger's twee little farts of Americana mingled with sad headshaking or David French's opportunistic scumbaggery anymore. I've been redpilled on it, morons. Mea culpa.

If I had done so, it could very have turned into a version of this left-right war we're in at the moment, with the affluent "comparatively conservative" areas duking it out with the liberal inner cities.

Now I kind of wish I had followed through with the project.

123 The Sunday book thread lists two books out of African and the wars for national liberation. The salient point was the rebels (communists) didn't actually win on the battlefield, but the elections (imposed by the international community) resulted in the communists taking power anyway.

A second point made, starting with the British in Malaya was the insurrection was the result of a war between two incompatible political ideologies, and the ruling colonials could only win by isolating the rebel sympathizers in controlled communities and 'deprogramming' the cult followers of Mao, Che, and Marx.

The progressives will put us (anti-communists) into re-education camps if they gain power again. So it only seems fair that we put them in camps first, and deprogram them.

If this be war, then let us act like it is a war that we don't want to lose.

160 The NeverTrumpers seem largely OK with the globalist/oligarch agenda. Some neocons may pretend to also be "conservative", but they want open borders and a largely globalist agenda. America First and sovereignty gets in the way of their real "Deep State" invasive ideals.

The hot spots are still largely orchestrated, but they are trying really hard to push their crazies in "murder mode" like the BLM guy that efficiently killed five cops in Dallas, or the Illinois Bernie Pal that plotted but failed to kill several at the softball practice soft target. If that had been the military trained BLM guy we may have had 25 dead congressmen.

But the Evergreen nuts are just wimpy crazies, and they don't have critical mass to win by inspiring more crazies (imo). The effort to round up the MS-13 gangs will send a strong message.

Europe may be lost but even they are mounting some "counter-offensive". Stasi police gal Merkel still wants open border immivasion, but even Bill Gates recently said they have to close those borders.

Deep State is in protective mode, even though their best weapon is their special counsel friend of Comey. But Kid Rock will win Michigan and America will be great again.

Yup.... most urban areas have only a couple days worth of food stores.... cutting supply would lead to mass chaos there...

But... once someone organized (probably the local gang) they would try to raid for food...

Now, cut electricity, and food stores go even faster, no refrigeration...

But you would need to contain the chaos.... ensure it does not become roving gangs of looters...

Thus... the defense...

Had Scrunkles won, there would be absolutely no further recourse available to, how shall I put it... "The Trump Faction". I don't want to use the "C"-word here.

Revolutions occur when there are no further acceptable options for one of the factions in a polity.

In contrast, the screaming garbage baby left (by which I mean the opposing American faction to the Trump Faction) knows full well they have all the options in the world available to them right now. As long as they don't get their foot-soldiers too whipped up in a twitter-tizzy, they can ride out at least a good solid decade of Trumpism. So they're not going to let things actually go to the barricades. Just enough scuffling to stay in the news and keep the campaign and "non-profit" donations rolling in, basically. A riot here, an assassination attempt there. "Local News Stories". I hate to sound so cynical, but that seems to be how it works now.

Hate crime charges dropped against Antifa vandals:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2017/07/17/ uc-berkeley-students-charged-vandalism-not-hate-crimes/

"Two UC Berkeley students arrested on felony warrants last week related to vandalism and extensive anarchist graffiti near the Cal campus were captured on surveillance footage spray painting, and found with paint stains on their hands, according to court papers.

Ismael Chamu and Peter Estrada, both 21, were charged Monday afternoon with felony vandalism, and possession of spray paint with the intent to commit vandalism and graffiti, a misdemeanor. The warrants from the Berkeley Police Department also included a hate crime allegation, because the graffiti included the phrase “Fuck White People,” but the Alameda County district attorney’s office declined to charge the case as such.

The graffiti — found June 28 and in the days that followed on people’s cars and fences in Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood — also included references to class warfare, “Kill Yuppies,” “Fuck the police,” “Fuck frat boys,” “Fuck gentrification” and “Black Lives Matter.” The messages also made reference to “Antifa,” and featured the anarchist “A” symbol. More than a dozen tires were also slashed, and police said Chamu was hiding a knife when officers approached him. He has not been charged in connection with the knife, however, according to court papers.

Police have said they initially stopped Estrada and Chamu at about 3 a.m. June 28 in connection with what turned out to be an unrelated burglary nearby. The pair tried to hide behind a parked car as officers approached, wrote Berkeley Police Sgt. Peter Hong in court papers, and they were detained.

“Estrada had pink, red, and black paint stains on his hands. Estrada had two black spray paint cans in his possession.… Chamu had the lid of a paint can in his pocket,” Hong wrote. Chamu’s hands had black and pink stains on them, too, he wrote."

As usual, the Antifa criminals are going to get off with a light (and probably suspended) sentence. Sigh.

I have chickens. Fresh eggs are harder to peel. I boil the water and then put the eggs in for about 10 minutes then drain and cool in ice water. To peel them I peel them under hot water. Cold eggs don't peel as well.

You can peel them inside the pot and throw away the shells.

But then came a wine glut and globalist trade brought in wine from every "slave/polluter" country in the world, who had currency collapses thanks to IMF and tyrants.

CA suffered also but they also were allowed the illegal labor, thanks to rich mega-farm owners and their lobbyists. So the Illinois effort mostly failed, since two buck chuck is impossible to compete against. (a wine that sold for $2 in the glut and was OK)

I dream of them rebuilding the horticultural Midwest, and automation will help a million small enterprise growers profit and build rural American culture. All part of the MAGA plan ... I hope.

295 I thought I heard/read that Congress was taking a look at limiting or changing the asset forfeiture situation? Could have imagined that.

As to "crisis" and "cold civil war", I'm sorta with those who think those questions are enmeshed in all kinds of semantics and timeline/perspective issues.

And actually I don't think crisis/no-crisis necessarily has anything to do with political stances or "neverTrumpism". At least on core issues.

Mass illegal migration, mass immigration without assimilation, border lawlessness, collapse of rule of law in immigration - all huge problems that are a few decades old, but need urgent "radical" corrections.

Insane destructive regulation, lysenko-fascist suppression of energy production, huge rent-seeking/looting and authoritarian impoverishment festival of "climate change" - urgent "radical" action long needed.

And so on.

"neverTrump" types simply aren't, or were never, serious or sincere - or they're not too bright. Pretty clear examples off all those situations are evident. But having not paid much attention to pundits for many many years, not sure how important all of that is anyway.

California was (or did) going to pass laws regulating egg production in states outside of California if the eggs were going to be sold in California. I don't remember how that worked out.

I would assume that some producers would divert their production to other markets if California did attempt regulations like that.

Posted by: The Political Hat at July 17, 2017 08:37 PM (vBeA5)

This is where I think we are at right now, in fact.

For all the public dipshittery on display in the news and public media, the country at large is really just going about its business. I think "Trumpism" has only just begun. We haven't even seen an election cycle yet in Trump's "era", so it's far too soon to make assumptions about the country's political trajectory after such a shaking, jarring moment, but i'm going to be optimistic.

Put another way, we don't have to "Gramsci" or "Fabian" or anything like that anymore, because the Gramscis and Fabians are slowly becoming the object of ridicule all from their own overreach. All we have to do is keep sane and keep living. And try to dodge their thrashing appendages as they hurl their politically dying bodies about in despair.

I'm actually oddly optimistic.

Maybe it's the booze talking.

In other "Carl Bernstein is a fucktard" news.....check this out from the wiki for "All The President's Men"

Redford said he was not happy with Goldman's first draft. Woodward and Bernstein also read it and did not like it. Redford asked for their suggestions but Bernstein and then-girlfriend writer Nora Ephron wrote their own draft. Redford showed this draft to Goldman, suggesting there might be some material they could use; Goldman later called Redford's acceptance of the Bernstein-Ephron draft a "gutless betrayal". Redford later expressed dissatisfaction with the Ephron-Bernstein draft, saying, "a lot of it was sophomoric and way off the beat". According to Goldman, "in what they wrote, Bernstein was sure catnip to the ladies". He also says a scene of Bernstein and Ephron's made it to the final film, a bit where Bernstein outfakes a secretary in order to see someone - something which didn't happen in real life.

well, they use the H1B in abundance, as I understand it. Not sure where all the illegal labor fits in. VD Hanson writes about the illegals' own culture around his place, which supports the foreign worker concept. The H1Bs are largely good workers, not minimum wage per hour, but that they are used only seasonally which avoids high costs (and some "normal" labor laws?) I don't know details ... that was my impression long ago.

I was going to semi-retire doing a few grapes back around 2001 and became convinced the mechanical harvest and as much other mech' as possible was the way to go. But I have other plans now.

404 NGU, this collapse/reversal/whatever of the GOP on O-care is pretty stunning, and audacious, by recent American standards.

Of the several major issues that drove the GOP to its immense electoral gains, on both the state and federal levels, since 2009, O-care is probably the single most important. Which is why fund-raising appeals always prominently featured it, and why dozens of repeal votes were held or attempted.

But now - after the biggest political earthquake in modern history - Trump's election - the GOP (well, the bulk of it, and the leadership) are now just saying, in effect, "never mind".

If the GOP gets away with this, then you *can* basically write off electoral politics as having much sway over huge public policy issues. Remember, the total number of "beneficiaries" of O-care subsidized policies (not refugees from outlawed individual plans, but people who might have been financially involuntarily uninsured before 2014) is less than the population of Chicago.

And the entire economy, the entire medical/health care delivery industry, is being damaged (and millions directly and substantially damaged), to avert the laughable political "fallout" from that tiny segment losing their welfare. Of course it's worse than that - the corporatist drone entities formerly called insurance companies are bringing major pressure to preserve the already-dissolving system, that is to preserve the massive welfare of taxpayer $$$ to offset their entirely predictable losses under the insane system they happily welcomed over the trepidation or screaming antagonism of their customers.

407 well, they use the H1B in abundance, as I understand it.

Posted by: illiniwek at July 17, 2017 08:59 PM (haOrO)

Ag uses H1A labor. You have to pay their way here and back, house and feed them and pay them 12:57 per hour mandated by the state.

In Ag you have to follow all labor and wage laws. A low skill Ag worker starts at 11:15 an hour. Much more than minimum wage.

The left will take control with an already unleashed militant and violent left intact, and they WILL be looking for payback. emboldened will be an understatement.

If trump fails no fucking way the center holds, and don't think all the fucked up shit you see in banana republics won't happen here, because the left has waaaay more in common with those assholes than they do Americans. Its either win, or gunfire down the road.

482 447 I still think trump is the last ditch attempt before gunfire. If the left ever gets back in power the Obama years will be a fond memory. If trump fails to roll all the crap back, or at least work it somehow to where its held in check you can kiss life as you know it goodbye, because if the left ever gets back in power they will put a nail in the country's coffin.

In Ag you have to follow all labor and wage laws. A low skill Ag worker starts at 11:15 an hour. Much more than minimum wage.
I am a farmer.

Posted by: CaliGirl

yeah, but I mean "normal" labor laws would entail full year labor, and unemployment insurance for the rest of the time, and various diversity requirements. But maybe you guys are using them full year, idk.

I admire the way you produce so many crops, and some of those hard workers would perhaps make the best Americans, compared to those that came for other reasons.

But if they are not becoming part of the "American Enterprise" and their labor is mostly profiting Mexico, that becomes a problem (for my theory of not exporting the profits of what "we built" ... as pertains to the "you didn't build that" baloney.) We are essentially subsidizing Mexico by sending "our profits" down there. This is why Mexico pushes for US to open borders, while they close theirs on the south.

It's tricky America First, versus multi-national spread the wealth to the commie nations business. ... nothing against you or the good workers.

It was a booby-trap that goes off if we try to repeal Obamacare.

Why?

Because people don't want to lose their coverage or find themsleves without the ability to pay for medicine. They are afraid.

Sure, that may be unfounded, but people who want full repeal (and yes, I want full repeal), haven't even bothered to assuage those fears.

I, at least, have tried to offer a path forward that addresses those concerns while offering full repeal.

But if you ignore those concerns, you will lose and either be stuck with Obamacare, or get single-payer.

543 Yet the majority of people seem to want a solution where everything is covered for free for anyone who happens to be in the US at any point in time, and is really affordable, consists of state of the art care on demand, low prescription costs and low hospital costs.

Except that they really, REALLY don't understand just how much worldwide chaos and death that would cause. It's the height of folly for any of these nations to believe that a second US civil war wouldn't affect them in the worst way possible.

573 Obamacare has broken the system, irretrivably. My family of three pays nearly 19K for health insurance every year (through my husband's employer), with a $3K individual deductible and a $9K family, after which they pay 80%, except for any number of things they DON'T pay for at all, including mental health (my son can't get help with his ADHD, just meds). That means that for my husband's chronic asthma, my son's ADHD and my occassional visits to get my neck nerves burned off, we end up paying just about 35% of our income on healthcare and insurance.

By comparison, we pay about $19K for rent for a three bedroom house on a big lot with a two car garage.

While this is Alaska, and things do cost considerably more than in the Lower 48, healthcare costs AND insurance costs are outrageous. It was not like this before Obama and all his "caring."

603 I don't see a hot civil war type scenario playing out anymore.

Neither faction has a leader who's willing to paint the streets red.

And neither faction has a following who's willing to do it for them.

At worst, Soros/Antifa goons will fuck about with their riots, but if they knew it was not mace and handcuffs waiting for them ("if only!" - my internal editor) but bullets and knives, they'd cut their shit out right quick.

No professionally violent organization (Police, Guards, Military, etc.) will have any part in violence against the citizenry, I don't think. Not here. Not yet, at any rate.

Things will change, and they will change rapidly, but it will happen while no one in particular is watching. A thousand little cuts against progressive totalitarianism. A thousand ridicules. A thousand votes lost. And then the professional left will go into remission and await their next moment to accumulate power from a sheepish, greedy, stupid, but ultimately good-hearted populace.

605 Ethan Bruce is a great name! My 16 year old is named Arthur, and you can bet we got some questions about that. It's a strong, masculine, historic name, and the boy is doing great. Also, he's not Arthur X because there are three other Arthur's in his class, ha.

Congratulations! Having a son may bring out the best in your grandson as long as no one intervenes so that he can rest easy - so Don't Intervene.

608 IC, 17%? Congratulations. That's actually about where things were pre-O-care as far annual premium increases.

Meanwhile, a large minority (individual plan holders), in many large states, saw their premiums rise ...... 400%, overnight, three years ago. Oh yes.

The number of people so affected is 2 to 3 times the small number of O-care welfare plan holders (who overwhelmingly dislike their plans, and little wonder, the number of participating docs and institutions, small from the outset, is shrinking even further).

But we are supposed to believe there is a political booby trap in repeal. Absurd.

O-care was crammed down the country's throat, against its will and without any demand for it, or enthusiasm (recall even the Dem caucus had to be bribed, and essentially committed political suicide, to pass it, barely). It has been a major factor driving the largest partisan re-alignment, at all levels, in our history. It was thus the centerpiece of GOP fund-raising, rhetoric, and (apparently kabuki) votes while in opposition to the previous WH.

It has not magically transformed into a popular program.

Pre-existing condition angst failed to make O-care or anything like it popular, or even acceptable, to the country, notwithstanding 3 decades of Dems flogging this and other minor issues. There are dozens of times as many people materially devastated by O-care as there are "afraid" of being uninsurable. (and see WeirdDave's post the other day for some details on how "pre-existing" issues were already addressed by several means before O-care, and how insurance stats indicate just how small the problem is)

(This all started, electorally, with Harris Wofford's special election victory in PA to replace a deceased senator, back in the very early 90s - I personally knew the people who for some reasone divined this "issue" as the key take-away from Wofford's victory, and made it a centerpiece of Dem strategy thereafter. But it never, never resonated with the electorate - as seen first in the disastrous fiasco of Hillarycare in '93).

The civic collapse we've suffered probably means that in fact, despite being an unpopular-to-wildly-hated-destructive law, that is materially damaging everyone via drag on economic growth, devastating to a large minority of independent/self-sufficient people, and which reinforces the pernicious dynamics of the existing system rather than reforms/improves them, it will not be repealed. Even though 3 of 4 consecutive political cycles were largely or partly driven by the desire for repeal.

613 A civil war in America?

Really?

How does it get off the ground? How do you organize? How do you prevent the security apparatus of the US Government from stopping you? The FBI, NSA, etc can find all your phone conversations, e-mail, etc.
Are you going to use carrier pigeons? Dead drops? And you're going to organize thousand ...NO Millions! of people around this?

Whether or not the US Mil is on your side or not, the security police types will be on your ass from the get go.
What happens when a few people actually go renegade, like the Bundys, or that nut Koresh? The DEA, FBI, US Marshals, whatever come down on them individually like a ton of bricks.
Unless you have literally thousands of people willing to be dead martyrs and getting smacked down piecemeal to get many thousands more motivated, you aren't going to have a hot Civil War.
UNLESS, significant units of the Army were willing to mutiny and do something. In terms of organization and firepower, they are the only ones that could smack down the Federal Security apparatchniks.

They have the same work ethic that my depression era grandparents had.
My guy friends in high school used to work in construction cleaning up around the site for 10 an hour, now they'll hire a Mexican guy that'll show up to work and work ten times as hard as the kids I went to school with.
It's the work ethic.

yeah you get it. The "free trade" globalists seem to believe trade deficits from commies that use slaves and build armies to kill us is going to magically work out fine. It was always a globalist scam.

Mexico is more corrupt narco-state, and some workers have the heritage to work hard, but not the heritage to fight for liberty, or believe down deep it is attainable. Heritage matters, and in the end they are still Mexican at heart (or Honduran, whatever).

But our own heritage has been demonized ... and kids learn to hate the founders. I just don't get what country they think is more free. But that is this "cold civil war" ... I think we can win ... the heartland still has heart.

probably a complicated question, but a simple point is the poor in Mexico know they have no free lunch there, and never have. It is a narco state of beheaders and drug dealers. But they know they can make good money in America if they work hard (and $12/hr here is worth maybe $50/hour when spent in Mexico).

Blacks are told to go out and demand the white oppressor give them more free stuff, and they vote 90+% for those that make those fake promises. Blacks are trained tools for the commie/Dem party.

625 It really comes down to this: Do you believe that George Soros & Co. are a greater threat to our liberty than Vlad Putin?

I certainly do...

Putin is a external disease that can be controlled with the U.S. military and our massive nuclear arsenal.

Soros & Co. on the other hand is like cancer, eating away at the internals of our nation and most of Western Europe. You cannot nuke yourself and using the military means we are already in a hot civil war. They are also fanatics, religiously so, which means compromise and debate are out of the question. It is hard to debate constitutional questions with people who would rather ditch the constitution for global governance.

Note: When I say Soros & Co. I mean most of the progressive left and even some Republicans who agree with Soros on foreign policy and free movement of labor, aka cheap labor. He is just the wealthiest and most fanatical of the bunch.

629 Interesting point about "cold civil war" is that the Red States are essentially the Confederacy. The Confederacy already lost once, and judging by Trump's 36% approval and 58% disapproval the "new Confederacy" should get ready for another loss.
Another data point about the "cold civil war" is that Republicans have basically no non-white votes (to a first approximation). So demographic doom is still the ultimate for Republican xenophobia and immigrant-bashing. It worked for one election, but future failure for white-only politics is assured by simple mathematics.

632 Page 274 of the Deborah Davis book Katherine the Great published in 1979:

"Woodward and
Bradlee learned of Bernstein's relationship with [Buster] Riggins [a
notorious DC pimp connected to the mafia] in 1978, when a District of
Columbia police detective told Post reporter Timothy Robinson that
Bernstein was was getting free material from Riggin's pornographic
bookstore in exchange for tips on police vice investigations (The detective told the author he also received complaints about Bernstein writing bad checks to prostitutes in the early 1970s, during his Watergate reporting, but did not press charges because he thought Bradlee and Mrs. Graham would accuse him of being politically motivated.)."

This was written 5 years before Jim Hougan's brilliant work Secret Agenda explored the possibility of a CIA-sponsored call-girl ring being the at the heart of the Watergate break-in. Hougan's book led to other books like Silent Coup and The Strong Man.
