Today in the Social Justice Wars

Molly DeVos Promises to return the DOE's Office of Civil Rights to its historical mission as a neutral investigatory office, not an agenda-setting PreCrime division.

One of the most high profile of those cases was the “guidance” issued under Title IX concerning bathroom use by “transgender students.” It was never debated by Congress nor codified anywhere except in an executive memo, but it may as well have carried the force of law since Washington was threatening schools’ federal funding if they failed to comply.
But the more far reaching aspect of the way the Office of Civil Rights was operating concerned the repeated pattern of choosing to launch lengthy studies looking for “patterns of abuse” to affect overarching policy changes at schools rather than addressing the individual complaints of students or teachers under established law.

A couple of weeks back the College Fix headlined an article, As the DOE promises to end witch-hunts, the witch-hunters cry foul, which is worth reading.

More at Instapundit: A professor called DeVos a (deep breath) "powerful handmaiden to a hegemonic white supremacist capitalist patriarchy." All for wanting to put the neutral back in neutral tribunal.

A former college student accused of making a false rape claim in order to spare her reputation is claiming a new defense: not guilty due to "psychiatric disability."

I've done some googling and can find no details on this claimed affliction -- everyone just calls it an unspecified "psychiatric disability."

She's trying to avoid having to take a plea deal-- which includes two years of prison.

A new paper about "Feminist Geography" claims you're committing a Social Justice War Crime if you cite straight white men in your research papers.

Maybe if minority/female "geographers" wrote more papers about, you know, geography than Social Justice War Crimes, they'd find themselves cited more.

Pomona College knew about new LGBT outreach director's (or whatever bullshit make-it-up position) history of anti-white and anti-herterosexual tweets before hiring him, but that's okay -- racism is okay if you're racist against the One Evil Race, and sexual preference bias is fine if you hate those icky straights.

And on that, Trinity College has decided to not punish a black professor for his anti-white tweets -- including his sweet "Let them die" tweet about Steve Scalise and the other victims of a Social Justice Assassin -- because some people in the academy deserve absolute freedom of speech.

Others, not so much, obviously.

Columbia University has settled with the student accused by "Mattress Girl" of rape -- Columbia University helped make him look guilty by giving Mattress Girl class credit for parading around with the mattress she wasn't raped on. And they've agreed to some form of compensation for the unjustly accused.

A University of California student who contrived claims of racial harassment by police has now been arrested as a major racist.

Well they didn't arrest him for racism -- not really. Just for a lot of vandalism, much of it racially motivated.

Ismael Chamu was picked up by police on Thursday, and is sitting in Berkeley jail on $85,000 bail. Berkeleyside reports he faces charges of “felony vandalism causing $400 or more in damage, the commission of a hate crime, hate crime enhancements and conspiracy.”

The "hate crime enhancements" include the graffiti "F*** white people." Also -- I don't believe this is any kind of hate-crime trigger -- "FTP," which stands for "f*** the police."

The Chicago "Dyke March" (that's what they call themselves; not making this up, people, I'm too lazy) is doubling down on using the slur "Zio," a put-down of Jews which popularized by David Duke.

I hadn't heard of the slur before, but The Rule is that once someone brings a term's Concerning History to your attention, you have to stop using it, otherwise you're officially An Racist. (Pepe the Frog, anyone?)

The Dyke March is refusing to stop using it. Ergo....

Finally, from the It's Not Racism When We Say It Department -- which is better known simply as "Social Justice Warriorism" -- the precious tale of a librarian who suffered "racial exhaustion" from being surrounded by (ugh!) white people at a convention of librarians.

April Hathcock, a Scholarly Communications Librarian at NYU, recently attended the annual American Library Association [ALA] conference in Chicago, a trade conference for people in the library profession.
"It[']s been 5 straight days of being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to."
Right after the conference, Hathcock took to her personal blog to describe her “Post-ALA Race Fatigue,” lamenting that she was suffering from “serious race fatigue” after spending five days amongst her colleagues [emphasis in original].
“Race fatigue is a real physical, mental, and emotional condition that people of color experience after spending a considerable amount of time dealing with the micro- and macro-aggressions that inevitably occur when in the presence of white people,” Hathcock wrote. “The more white people, the longer the time period, the more intense the race fatigue.”
While Hathcock noted that she is normally exhausted after such conferences for reasons unrelated to racial issues, she said that this time she “hit her limit” after spending five days “being tone-policed and condescended to and ‘splained to.”

She also slammed the “nice white ladies” who told her to be “civil” and “professional” when she tried to “talk about the importance of acknowledging oppression and our profession’s role in it.”

By the way, you should know that Social Justice Warriors feel that you're forcing them into uncompensated emotional labor when you make them berate you and scold you, and they want to be compensated for this "emotional labor" of beating up on you.

Scripps College, a prestigious women’s school outside Los Angeles, is promoting the idea that non-white students must be given monetary compensation for the “emotional labor” of having to deal with so-called microaggressions.
Campus resident assistants at the school are hanging up two sets of posters titled “Emotional Labor 101”: one for whites, and another for minorities, whom the posters dub as “victims of emotional labor.”
Per the Claremont Independent, both posters define “emotional labor” as having to exert energy “for the purpose of addressing people’s feelings, educating, making people comfortable, or living up to ‘social expectations.’”

Let me Mansplain to you why that's not gonna happen, Sally.

I would leave to see white male straight students start bringing grade discrimination claims against professors who say stuff like this. You may also be interested to know that this rampage happened the night before a major anti-gentrification arson in which a huge apartment building complex under construction was burned down, shortly after Antifa graffiti promising to burn down new construction was spraypained nearby -- with the same handwriting as the Berkeley anti-white graffiti. The video of the perps shows a guy in classic Antifa getup (black clothes, bandana over face, military-style backpack obviously stuffed with weapons, incendiaries, and paint cans), climbing into the construction site.

I would not be surprised in the slightest if the Berkely perp turned out to be the arsonist as well.

And this is just the latest in a string of Antifa arsons targeting "white" construction -- high-rent apartment complexes in dodgy parts of Oakland and Emeryville (adjacent to Berkeley).

I read an interesting science fiction book yesterday which proposed the "everything online" phenomen having nearly killed off print books, which then caused a drop-off in reading overall, so that there ended up being swaths of books that were never digitalized, and libraries taking on almost more of a museum-like quality - because the readers had taken on almost more of an art snob-like quality.

That "snob" quality and libraries wanting to offer a value-added experience meant that libraries had on hand clones of popular authors that had memory imprints from the original but had no rights of their own, and could be checked out from the library. Which happens for the protagonist when he's checked out to solve a murder.

I've heard this said about both parties so many times over the years, not buying it. I remember when Bubba Clinton took over and built the DLC to pull the Party bank from its leftward tilt which was causing them to bleed support. My guess is we will see this sort of thing happen again.

There are some sane people in the Democrat Party and they know that they will never win back support from middle America/blue collar America by continuing down the path of identity politics.

Losing has a way of focusing people and once they get over this spasm of Trump hate and realize that they are only making things worse for themselves they will head back to the center. Hopefully, this awakening takes years.

They are so infested with bums -- and their fleas, bedbugs and effluvia -- that almost no normal people dare go in them any more.

The San Francisco Main Branch Library at Civic Center is surreal -- an indoor homeless encampment. Stinks like hell. THe restrooms are a scene from Dante's Inferno.

A while back, homeless bums at the main Berkeley Public Library would regularly use the library computers to search for child-porn, which they would then jack off to under their stinky pants.

People complained to the SJW library staff, who said that as a matter of principle they would NEVER cooperate with the police, and responded by putting up notices on the computers that your privacy would be protected and that all browsing history was auto-deleted immediately and that the police would never be notified of your computer use, no matter what it was.

We have one or two generations now who have had everything given to them, whether it is their parents, grandparents, schools, charities, government, participation trophies, all while being told EVERY DAY at school, activities, and at home that everyone deserves and must be given equal treatment, equal money, equal lunches, equal time, equal etc. Add in a good dose of guilt and shaming about how little Johnny has been so lucky be cause he always had plenty and poor LeShia didn't because white people were racists and corporations take everything from people and animals and try to kill the earth because their evil.

Libraries out here in the burbs are doing OK. Though most of them are off the main highways by quite a bit.
They're actually in a several year renovation plan. I drove by one the other day and it looks like they've blown out all the exterior walls and are putting in huge glass expansions (not windows, so much as actually expanding square footage surrounded by glass.)

Not really sure what the game plan is, but since all the libraries were build in the utilitarian brown box 70s architecture style, it's not awful to see them change.

Yep, one year after Reagan trounced Mondale with the specific intent of moving the Party back to the middle. I can see the same thing happening again.

I'm getting the impression (and it's less and less of a mere impression) every day that it's not just libraries. It's pretty much every publicly owned and accessible asset has degenerated into filthy and dangerous toilets.

I traversed Market St. during a convention about twenty years ago. I couldn't escape the stench of human waste. Only reference point I had was the smell of historic New Orleans Mardi Gras in the very early mornings. Market Street was worse and in the middle of a regular weekday to boot.

Clearly that city is deteriorating at an accelerating rate.

I guess they hold something or another (court records?) that requires they allow public access. Every so often we'd get reports of the homeless getting caught literally with their pants down in various parts of it. (It wasn't pooping, dunno if that makes it better or worse.)

I ran the student center and we got a new boss (actually the old boss returning) and he wanted to give grocery gift cards to the homeless who we would often kick out and I shouted at him for a good 5 minutes about why that was a horrible idea. I finally said "the university runs a parish, send them there and let them take care of it, at least they have a plan."

And that's what the GOP would be smart to key in on. If they become the anti-SJW, common sense party, they can do really well and the other policy stuff they do will be largely ignored. Even if polling shows opposition to dumping the ACA (which it might, depending on how creatively the pollers weave it), that won't matter if the GOP is the face of the opposition to this petty ante crap.

This is what really pisses people off, not big policy concepts. Its the Guiliani "broken glass theory" level of national politics. Address this stuff and the other can follow.

I've been reading a paper back for a while (wife had a copy of the book and I never checked to see if it was available on ereader) The Kindle's battery is pretty long. One mitigating factor is that I decided to get the ad version to save $10 or $20.
The ads themselves don't bother me, but it changes them every so often (hours/days? Never checked at least hours.)
So this means if I leave it unplugged for a few weeks (which has been) it'll usually be dead when I come back for it.

Now, like I said I've been reading a paper back for a while, so it's been unplugged for at least a month. I'd say I can get 2-3 weeks out of it with heavy reading, maybe more. It charges with a standard micro-USB too, so a couple hours on the phone charger and it's topped off.

Actually, yes to the former, no to the rest.

Walked a good bit around Chinatown, the Embarcadero, and around the Moscone Center. Avoided Folsom but to be honest, this was quite a while ago and I wasn't nearly as tuned in to the Progressive Radical scene. But, yeah, Harrison/I-80 was a bit unnerving. We high-tailed it back north after a few blocks.

True and if the rules are written that you cannot hire your own grads to puff up your employment stats, schools could get into the racket of hiring each other's grads to the same effect. The total amount of loans given to any grad should be so small - to cover maybe 25% of the cost of a degree not including housing/living expenses - so that those snowflakes need to work 20 hours or so a week to pay the bills. Idle hands have plenty of time to build paper mache puppets and cause trouble on campus. People who have to work don't have time for that nonsense.

Zombie, first off love your work. But you might be mixed up on a couple details here. First off, Chamu was arrested on the night of June 27-28, the night of the vandalism rampage. The big fire in Oakland happened the following week, early the morning of July 7th. And they haven't announced that it was arson yet; it's very suspicious, but they were still investigating last time it was reported on. No surveillance video of the latest fire has been publicly disclosed yet. BUT:

There have been at least five fires, including the latest one, involving big residential buildings under construction in recent years. The previous four were determined to be arson -- two of them were at the same site in West Oakland/Emeryville, which was burned, reconstructed, then burned again. The second fire at that location was the one where they caught a guy in Black Bloc clothing pulling up on a bike, climbing into the site, and then leaving right before the fire erupted.

Interestingly, that spot is about three blocks from the Antifa flophouse where bike-lock attacker Eric Clanton was arrested (1173 32nd Street), and the second fire took place about 10 days before the cops picked up Clanton. There are several other anarchist/radical flophouses and squats in that same area in West Oakland; it could have been a guy from any one of those. But I do think that the cops should talk to Clanton and his roommates, and keep an eye on the various other anarchist/radical/Antifa flops and gathering spots in that area.

Besides the two fires at the Oakland/Emeryville site, the other recent arson fires were in West Oakland, next to the BART station, and just east of Lake Merritt. The most recent fire was north of Lake Merritt.

He was trying to use examples such as demanding the govt. own Netflix, etc.

As much as I like many of his monologues, his discussion and explanation of events, IMO, he is totally missing the mark with these ideas.

Young people and the FSA believe that socialism is great because their entire lives have benefited personally from socialistic programs and in turn, they have not been on the other side of socialism that takes from them.

They do not empathize nor understand that in order to GIVE something to someone who doesn't have it, you have to TAKE from someone else.

We have one or two generations now who have had everything given to them, whether it is their parents, grandparents, schools, charities, government, participation trophies, all while being told EVERY DAY at school, activities, and at home that everyone deserves and must be given equal treatment, equal money, equal lunches, equal time, equal etc. Add in a good dose of guilt and shaming about how little Johnny has been so lucky be cause he always had plenty and poor LeShia didn't because white people were racists and corporations take everything from people and animals and try to kill the earth because their evil.
40 years of this crap and he thinks he can turn a light bulb on in one of these drone's eyes because the govt(which is the best way to distribute fairly , remember) would own Netflix?
